Earnestly yours …
A V Manivannan
Dear readers !
Hope you are doing well !
We could sense there is an increasing realization on skill set needs by many organizations
and also from many individuals. It’s a good sign !
However, for enhancing skills, one must have patience and lot of efforts. There is no
short cuts at all !
Also I realise that there is a tendency among the working professionals to know
everything ( of course faster ! ). Knowing many things may be good but, MASTERING
the essentials is most important. ‘Essentials’ shall be defined based on their field of
working and future plans too !
Keeping this as a very idea, we floated “Skill 360” initiative. 360 degrees done not mean
to skill up everything, but skilling up the essentials ! So far the progress is quite
encouraging to us !
Thanks from the bottom of my heart to every one of you !

The Six sigma approach
Considering the Key Principles of Lean Six Sigma
Lean Six Sigma takes the features of Lean and of Six Sigma and integrates them to form a magnificent seven set of principles. The principles of each
approach aren’t dissimilar (check out Chapter 1 to read more about the individual components), and the merged set produces no surprises.
The seven principles of Lean Six Sigma are:
✓ Focus on the customer.
The customer’s CTQs describe elements of your service or offering they consider Critical To Written in a way that ensures they’re measurable, the CTQs
provide the basis for determining the process measures you need to help you understand how well you perform against these critical requirements.
Focusing on the customer and the concept of value-add is important because typically only 10–15 per cent of process steps add value and often represent
only 1 per cent of the total process time.
These figures may be surprising, but they should grab your attention and help you realize the potential waste that’s happening in your own organization.
As you improve your performance in meeting the CTQs, you’re also likely to win and retain further business and increase your market share.

✓ Identify and understand how the work gets done.
The value stream describes all of the steps in your process – for example, from a customer order to the issue of a product or the delivery of a service, through
to payment. By drawing a map of the value stream, you can highlight the non-value-added steps and areas of waste and ensure the process focuses on meeting the
CTQs and adding value.
To undertake this process properly, you must ‘go to the Gemba’. The Japanese word Gemba means the place where the work gets done – where the action is – which
is where management begins. Process stapling (which we introduce in Chapter 5) involves you spending time in the workplace to see how the work really gets done,
not how you think it gets done or how you’d like it to be done.
You see the real process being carried out and collect data on what’s happening. Process stapling helps you analyze the problems that you want to tackle and
determines a more effective solution for your day-to-day activities.
The value stream reveals all of the actions, both value-creating and non-value-creating, that take your product or service concept to launch and your customer
order through the supply chain to delivery. These value-creating and non-value-creating actions include those to process information from the customer and those
to transform the product on its way to the customer.

Is it advisable to change the APQP timing plan, once created ?
An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! +91 99621 17222
Mr. Anbalagan I
M/s. Hubbell, Chennai
During APQP & PPAP virtual workshop
AVM’sResponse
No harm in doing so, with a clear justification but !
Let us understand one important point carefully. APQPtiming plan ( generally a Gantt chart, right ? ) is more ofa Document than a Record, during the APQP journey.
Once the NPD is approved through PPAP run and theteam finishes the Phase 5 also, the same Timing planbecomes a RECORD.
From now, no changes are permitted and the documentitself may become a lesson or reference for the future( similar ) project !
APQP manual also permits the timing plan gettingamended during the course of APQP
We have a test rig on Leakage testing. How to perform SPC
studies on this ? Our customer requirement is to compute the
Cpk on this facility.
Please suggest !

AVM’sResponse
In my opinion, there is no need for a Cpk study, since it isonly a testing activity.
Where as MSA is applicable ! Following studies may beconducted, using an established product sample ( asreference master ), provided, the reading will not bechanging over usage of the sample.
1. Bias study – Independent sample method2. GRR study – Provided, if there is a human factor
involved in the testing
Please ensure the product clamping facility is having aconsistency, fairly !
