Benchmarking is a popular method for developing countries requirements and setting goals.
In more conventional terms, benchmarking can be defined as measuring your performance against that of
best-in class companies, determining how the best-in-class achieve those performance levels, and using
the information as the basis for your own company’s targets, strategies, and implementation.
Camp (1989) lists the following steps for the benchmarking process:
1. Planning
1.1. Identify what is to be benchmarked
1.2. Identify comparative companies
1.3. Determine data collection method and collect data
2. Analysis
2.1. Determine current performance “gap”
2.2. Project future performance levels

❖ Training must be accomplished while maintaining the production line pace.
❖ How can so many companies get away with minimal training?
❖ The answer is that the “disconnected” nature of processes (separated by inventory buffers)
allows varying levels of capability within the system.
❖ New hires or trainees do not need to be assimilated carefully, because there are only limited
repercussions—if they cannot perform at the required pace, the next operation keeps working
using the inventory buffer.
❖ This is simply not possible within the Toyota system !!
❖ The new hire at Toyota must also be developed while maintaining the highest level of quality and
safety.

❖ If a trainee were to attempt to paint a car body, for example, and she applied the paint thinly, the
ensuing defect would not only be difficult to repair, but it might also affect the levelling of the
production and could possibly result in an empty slot on the production line.
❖ This is really the key point of TPS—the system forces everyone to be in top form in all aspects,
including training.
❖ The nature of TPS requires highly capable and competent people—thus the importance of the
development of people !!
