Bridging the gap between physical and psychological health, starting with emotional first aid. Thud.An excruciating pain crawls up your knee and you can see blood oozing from the fresh graze, a line of red slowly descend-

ing down your leg. Almost mechanically, you promptly seek clean towels and a few bandages.

We all know how to maintain our physical health and practice basic hygiene, for instance, washing hands

or brushing our teeth. Earlier, when you cleaned the wound and covered it in band-ages, you prevented infection. Such prac-tices have been embedded into us from an early age; taught and spoken about with profound significance.

But what do we all know about maintain-ing psychological health? Nothing. Is it taught to children? No. Commonly discussed in society? It is not.

So why is it that we favour physical health over psychological health? How is it any more important?

Contrary to common belief, more often do we sustain psychological injuries than we do with physical injuries. With time,

our physical injuries eventually heal and improve but with mental illnesses, it does not; ignorance worsens it, the pain slowly takes over and ultimately, it dramatically impacts our lives. You’re thinking: ‘but doesn’t treatment exist? There are resources and support around.’The reality is that it does not occur to us that we should be seeking help. It only does when we are too deep in or at times too late. With physical injuries, we seek immediate assistance and aid.

With psychological injuries, we try to ‘shake it off and tell ourselves ‘it’s noth-ing’.

It is time to bridge the gap between physi-cal and psychological health. It is time for them to come in a pair, as equals. In say-ing so, emotional first aid should be learntand practiced as often as physical first aid.It is imperative for everyone to learn it: all ages, genders, nationalities, etc. There should be no lines drawn or bars estab-lished.

So how can we practice emotional firstaid? Here are a few ways to do so that are worth spreading:- Recognition, acceptance, action

When we sense physical pain, we auto-matically know something is wrong and we address it - we have evolved to do so. It is simply the same with emotional pain. If you are experiencing an emotional pain that remains for an extended period

of time, you have sustained an emotional wound. Seek treatment and take action. Reach out.- Altering your responses to failureFailure often leaves us feeling down and depressed about why we couldn’t achieve something. These thoughts prevent us from performing at our best because we end up focusing on our failures. Emotion-al first aid ends up tackling this problemthrough changing our negative perception of failure into something motivational. Instead of saying “Oh I’m so bad at this, I can’t do it” say something like “I’ll do it better next time with hard work!”. These thought changes reduce the feeling of helplessness and makes us more motivat-ed to do better the next time. In the long term, these kind of thoughts help develop resilience against setbacks in life. This is definitely one of the more effective wayto practise emotional first ai- Defend your self-esteem. Regularly monitor it, from both others and yourself.Acting like an emotional immune system, self-esteem protects you from emotional pain while strengthening your resilience. As of such, it is imperative to monitor it from others and yourself as we easily tend to dig our own wounds. - Altering the thoughts with a positive distraction

Page 6: E M O T I O N A L F I R S T A I D - Tempe High School · can’t do it” say something like “I’ll do it better next time with hard work!”. These thought changes reduce the

protecting your self-esteem and by alter-ing your responses to failure or rejection, not only are you healing your emotional wounds and building essential emotional resilience, you will be in control; you will flourish. In only a few decades, the life e -pectancy rose by 50 percent a hundred years ago, all as a result of practicing personal hygiene. Think about all the possibilities that would come from simply practicing emotional hygiene. Think about all the lives we could make even a little better.

Can you imagine a world where we are all psychologically healthier? Where we are all empowered, fulfilled and happy? I’m surewe can all agree that we want to live there. Well, by taking in these words and altering a few habits, I’m certain that our current world can head in that direction.

MORE THAN JUST A TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE

On the 31st of January 2018, Sydney was in for a treat. A super blue blood moon was to grace our skies at about 11:30pm but unfortunately the night sky had other plans. I wasn’t quite sure what a super blue blood moon was, all I understood was that there would be a total lunar eclipse. There was so much hype surrounding this event that I decided to do some research of my own to find out what the fuss was all about.

TTo begin with, I discovered that this phenomenon last occurred in Sydney more than 30 years ago on December 30th 1983 and the reason there was so much interest in this event was that three events came together on the one night which made it a rare event.

FiFirstly, it was going to be a supermoon. A supermoon is when the moon appears very large, and this occurs when it is closest to earth on its orbital journey whilst it is a full moon. The second event was that it was a blue moon. The blue moon as I found out had nothing to do with the moon appearing blue, but rather it is the second full moon to occur in a calendar month. Lastly, the blood moon refers to the total lunar eclipse, as the moon takes on a red colour as it slides entirely into the earth’s shadow and is a result of light being bent or refracted onto its surface by the earth’s atmosphere.

So,So, there I was, as I’m sure many others were, staring at the night sky that was blanketed with clouds. Although I was unable to witness this event, the NASA website was streaming the event live which I guess was some sort of consolation. As the event was over online, I began to look through the NASA website, where I discovered dates of future celestial events.

TheThere is some good news and bad news. Firstly, this same event will be occurring again, the bad news, you will have to wait 19 years. However, in the meantime, there will be another amazing celestial event occurring on the 22nd July 2028, that of a total solar eclipse that will be visible from Sydney.

Life and Education

Hawking was born on the 8th of January,1942 in Oxford, United Kingdom. He attended St Albans School. Hawking's family placed high value on education and so his father wanted him to attend the well regarded Westminster School, but the 13 year old Hawking was ill on the day of scholarship examinations, which was needed since the family couldn't afford the school fees without the financial assistance of a scholarship. Although he was considered "Einstein" by his classmates, Hawking was not successful academically. Instead it was later that he developed an interest in math and science, inspired by his teacher at the time. At the age of 17 he went on to start his university education at the University College of Oxford. After Hawking's diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease which causes the gradual deterioration of the motor neurons, he questioned his studies since he was expected to die within the next 2 years. However the disease stabilized with the aid of medication, which allowed Hawking to marry and receive his PhD. Now he is known as one of the most important scientific figures in Human History.

Right: Stephen Hawking with his wife

Contributions Hawking had a lot of theories and articles in the field of cosmology and physics during his

teenage and also adult years. In his early years as a scientist and physicist, he contributed to

some of the most extraordinary discoveries of our time in the fields of:

● The Origins of the Universe

● Time

● The Big Bang Theory

● Gravitational and Space-time Singularities

● Black Hole Radiation

● A Universe Without Space-time Boundaries

● The High Likelihood of the Existence of Extraterrestrial Life

Black Hole Radiation

A black hole is a collapsed star that has zero volume and practically infinite mass. Black

holes are so dense that it was believed nothing could escape from them once it passed the

"event horizon," or the proximity to a black hole where its gravity becomes irresistible.

Stephen Hawking postulated the existence of radiation that is emitted through a black hole

and comes out the other side. This is now accepted science, and the concept is known as

Hawking Radiation.

A Universe Without Space-Time Boundaries

Stephen Hawking hypothesized, and more or less proved with mathematical and physics

models, the idea that the universe has no space-time boundaries. His idea is that you can't

have either space or time before the big bang. Therefore, the universe has no space-time

boundary. Space-time boundaries are a completely human and artificially constructed

concepts that do not really exist. He explained it like this:

"The Big Bang Theory says that the universe of matter and energy began at a single point,

which reached a critical mass, then exploded outward. The universe continues to expand. In

a closed universe theory, at some point, the universe is going to 'hit the wall,' when enough

energy has been expended from the original big bang, then begin to shrink again. In an open

universe theory, the universe will just continue to expand indefinitely as the force of gravity

becomes weaker and weaker as objects in space spread further apart."

The Truth: False News

Khang Mai

False news has been one of the largest concerns about any platform of media - including both print and digital. The widespread use of technology in this day and age means that information spreads on the internet much faster than it could 50 years ago. This means that everyone can stay updated on the latest events happening around the world, but at a cost. With the current rate at which information and misinformation spreads in this day and age, any form of false news on social media be been shared to hundreds of thousands of people before it was corrected or being taken down.

One such example is when Hurricane Irma was about to hit the Americas, fake rumours about the scale and path of the hurricane popped up all over Facebook. One news article, which has been shared more than 2 million times on Facebook, stated that “conditions are nearly ideal for a “super storm” to develop”, and that Hurricane Irma could the the first category 6 storm ever. This, of course, was false.

Photoshopped images of the “predicted path” of Hurricane Irma circulated Facebook prior to the event, and it was shared almost 40,000 times. Even the White House fell for the Facebook prank. The National Weather Service account had to make a public announcement not to believe shady-looking forecasts that aren’t from the official sources. The damage, of course, has already been done, with hundreds of people evacuating from what was effectively a false alarm.

Another example of false news in recent media is the attack of “Muslim Migrants” on a French Catholic Church. On March 20th, 2018, a Facebook page called “News World” shared a video in which pro-migrant protesters are being removed from the church, with the accompanying headline “Saint-Dennis (France) Muslim immigrants attack a Catholic church during the mass. The

Page 13: E M O T I O N A L F I R S T A I D - Tempe High School · can’t do it” say something like “I’ll do it better next time with hard work!”. These thought changes reduce the

police try to stop them”. This is, of course, false. What the footage actually showed was a protest on March 18th, 2018 at the Basilica of Saint-Denis in France against a proposed bill that would make it more difficult for people to seek asylum in the country. This protest was non-violent, and ended after an hour, when the group was escorted out of the church by police.

Although the video (which was viewed more than 1.2 million times within a day of its initial posting) does not show “Muslim immigrants” attacking a Catholic Church in France, it was used as fuel for far-right politicians to spread anti-immigrant misinformation. One particular example of this is a French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, who tweeted in French that the immigrants in their “immigrationist madness” were “ready to trample (French’s) civilization and desecrate a place of historical worship”. This was proven wrong later, but not before hundreds of thousands of people saw it.

The technological advancements in recent years have allowed for amazing things to happen, but it’s not without its costs. Information spreads on the internet at a much faster rate than it did 50 years ago, which also means that false information spreads like wildfire on the internet. The nature of false information is to be controversial, which drives people to share and discuss it, increasing public exposure to false information, and to then be picked up by other news sources.

It’s a cycle that is extremely hard to break, and the best way for us to avoid falling into these online pitfalls is to educate ourselves. Always check the facts before sharing a piece of information online and don’t use online “news” websites and groups as your primary method of getting information. It may sound outrageous to be real, maybe it isn’t. Learning these things is essential to staying educated on the World Wide Web.

THE CROWS & THE RAVENSSunny Sang & Zean Wang

pictureIn literature, crows and ravens are considered bad omen and are associated with witches. People believe they steal, eat other birds’ egg and reduce the population of other birds. Some legend said that seeing just a single crow is considered an omen of bad luck. Finding two crows, however, means good luck. Th ree crows means health, and four crows signifies wealth. Yet spotting fi ve crows means a plague is coming, and six crows means death is nearby. Th ere are many superstitions like these. Although there is not any scientifi c evidence, those theories are common and abound.

Are Ravens Clever?Parrots and the corvid family of crows, ravens, and jays are considered the most intelligent of birds. Not surprisingly, research has shown that these species tend to have the largest HVCs. (an area in the avian brain involves in song production and vocal learning).

Ravens can get the nut pip by throwing nuts from the sky or they put the nuts under the car wheels and wait until the car starts driving to crash the seedcase.

In Aesop’s Fables, there is a parable about the raven. One day, there was a raven which was very thirsty. It found a bottle of water, however, the bottleneck was too small to attain the water. Th e raven fl ew away and brought some little stones backs. Th e raven put the stones into the bottle, and the water level became higher and higher. Finally, the raven was able to get the water sucessfully. Th is fable shows us the ravens are smart.

Ravens can fi nish many diffi cult actions. For example, if they fi nd a hunk of butter, they cut the butter into small pieces to make it easy to carry. When they saw some biscuit, they use their beak to heap the biscuit together and carry them off once. Th ey do not give other birds a chance.

RAVENS' HABITSTh ere are three species of ravens in Australia, and three of crows. Ravens are generally bigger than crows, but other diff erences (e.g. range, calls) are more reliable for identiying which species is which. Ravens are usually seen in pairs. Another aid to identifi cation of this species is the absence of wing-fl icking while calling. Crows have dark eyes and shorter throat hackles. Australian raven’s life expectancy is 22 years.

Common Ravens are omnivores, but most of their diet is meat. At times they eat arthropods, seeds, and grain, but they are more carnivorous than crows. Th ey scavenge for carrion and garbage and also prey on rodents and the eggs and nestlings of other birds.

Crows that are territorial also fl y to the roost to sleep with family at night, returning to their territoy at dawn to begin foraging for thrie survival. Scientists think they do this for several reasons.

Th ere is an old idea that ravens feed their parents when they grow up. Now science has shown that this ancient idea is wrong. Th e young birds have fl uffi er feathers than adult birds and they look larger. Mistaking the young birds to be feeding the elder birds. Th is story is thought to educate children to take care of their parents when they grow up.

environment and ravensRavens and crows can be good for our environment. Th ey can help farmers to get rid of pests such as locusts, crickets, caterpillars and tumblebugs. Ravens also eat carrion, which eliminates the animal bodies and helps with environmental purifi cation.

However ravens eat the food and garbage that we did not throw into bins. With ravens not fi nding their own food in the nature. Which is not good for our environment.

Eating humen food is not good for the ravens’ health. Although they knew how to tear apart packages, it is avoidless that they might eat some pieces of plastic from the packages. Ravens cannot digest the plastic, which gets stuck in their intestines. Th is is fatal to ravens because they cannot take in enough food. If other saprophagous animals eat the died body of ravens - which full of plastic inside - the plastic will go into their bodies. Th e plastic is hard to decompose in the nature and it will continue along the food chain, which is destructive to some species.

Remember to throw the plastic bags into garbage bins or minimize the use of plastic and reduce the threats to birds and our environment. Remember that ravens and crows are a healthy part of our natural world!

Marriage Equality...

A Kiss, A Ring. Sealed with Commitment.

Marriage plays an important role in our society; a right deserved by all to legally represent the love and commitment of the union between two people. But as time goes by, the changing values within our society develop and so the perception of marriage is bound to change as well. This has been exemplified with the acceptance of LGBTQI+ couples - the newly placed Marriage Amendment Act 2017. This represents a new paradigm of our traditionally recognised heterosexual marraiges. Many people who had advocated for marriage reform allowing same-sex marriage to

take place within Australia were vindicated. Some believed this law might go against cultural or religious beliefs. They had also believed that the acceptance of marriage equality might cause confusion within our society.

Whilst the controversy surrounding this topic continues, LGBTQI+ and their supporters are having to survive with the criticism of being looked down on or to endure discrimmination from some people. But their efforts have paid of with the adoption of this new law reform been brought through!

3D PrintingAngelene Tan and Albert Luong

3D printing is able to change the world in the future. There are many different

factors that could contribute towards this change. Companies can use 3D

printing for making complex designs to produce prototype models and even

normal families have now access to this technology. This is all because of 3D

printing, this will make the architecture, medical and even automotive

industry increase and making more profit for the economy. Though 3D printing

has existed for a very long time, its sudden drop in price has made it more

accessible to the general public. 3D printing not only has positives but it also

has negatives including the loss of many people's jobs due to the machines

plus the profit will only gain after a certain amount of time due to setting and

buying the machines being quite expensive and most of the 3D printing may or

may not be the best of quality.

Right now, the economy loves 3D printing, it can do whatever people desire

and it saves a lot of money on a project if you do have one. 3D printers at the

moment are only limited to one print material at a time such as plastic and

wood fibers. Modern 3D printers cannot print different materials on the same

model. This is due to it being able to be more cost effective but also being able

to make complex designs quicker. 3D printing is not set to take over mass

production of general goods as it lacks the technology to produce models

time efficiently and with the quality. Maybe in the future there will be a further technological breakthrough but currently 3D printers lack the speed of other

methods of mass production.

Does it have negative effects on the economy? 3D printing has been a

controversial topic throughout our society as there are both negatives and

positives. The medical industry involves many areas that 3D printing is able

Page 19: E M O T I O N A L F I R S T A I D - Tempe High School · can’t do it” say something like “I’ll do it better next time with hard work!”. These thought changes reduce the

to help as it able to print custom organs at a much more cost effective rate that

is going to save countless lives. Now the production of 3D printing is helping

this industry as it is able to make organs at a faster pace and the polypill is also

being designed to have several drugs in it but to be let out out at different time

so that there is no need for taking multiple pills. The only thing that may be a

downfall for 3D printing in the medical industry is that component parts it may

cause discomfort and may require extensive physiotherapy.

3D printing saves resources as it uses limited amount

of supplies and the extra materials used can often be

recycled. The first appearance of 3D printing

technology emerged during the 1980s.

Most large companies just used it to prototype models. Since then 3D printer

costs have dropped dramatically. They are easy to obtain and more of the

general public are becoming involved in CAD software required to operate 3D

printers Even schools are now using 3D printers for students to produce

prototype models for school projects. Tempe High is a good example of how this technology innovates and creates creative challenges.this.

However, there are dangers to 3D printing. As technology evolves there are

more methods of weaponisation. Gun schematics are now available for the

general public online. With uses of different 3D printing material, guns can

now be printed for personal use. Despite government actions placing laws

that anyone found in possession of a gun schematic can be charged, there are

always ways to bypass police tracking methods (VPNs). Guns are generally

quite hard to acquire in Australia, but with these weapons easily accessible

online, this could be a threat to public safety.

Currently, 3D printing is playing a big role in Tempe High School, where the

graphics and engineering electives use a 3D printer. 3D printing still has its’

negatives. Whether the positives outweigh the negatives, this judgement is

up to you. Medical 3D printing may cause discomfort and may require

physiotherapy the positives exceed it due to it being able to produce organs

that may be needed in a surgical operation. Its ability to produce custom

made organs for a certain individual for a cheaper price is most appealing.

This also allows the medical industry to make a polypill and therefore people

with medical treatment won’t need to take multiple pills at different times.

Pricing for 3D printers are getting lower and printing with finer quality. This is

especially good for the general public or school students if they need to make

any prototypes models or designs. Therefore, allowing 3D printing is the way of the future!

got you. The main tourist location of

Australia’s biggest basketball league may be an 'ant' compared to some giants like the NBA, Euro League and CBA but it doesn’t mean that Australian basketball represen-tatives are as small or unknown as the league.

In global competitions such as the FIBA Cup, Australia does quite well to earn their reputation. For example in the FIBA Asia Cup against teams like Japan, Hong Kong and Phillipines.

In larger and rarer events like the Olympics (Rio, 2016) the Boomers (the Australian Men’s team) nearly made their way to gold but achieved bronze.

AUSSIE TALENTSAustralians are often enthusiastic

and supportive of each other, particularly in sports.

Locally, many Australians support the select Australian stars in the most popular basketball league, the NBA, every year.

Whether, during a normal season game or a frantic play-off run, there are many Aussies in the NBA that are highly respected in the league.

Wherever and whoever the Auss-ie superstars are though, they are widely respected in the NBA league. Whether they be old or young they are treated fairly and with high praise.

Recently, Andrew Bogut, a millionaire contracted centre and successful basketball prospect, returned to Australia. Many Australians, young and old greeted him on home soil, whilst many of his overseas fans were left with memories of spectacular plays!

The Truman Show (1998) Director: Peter Weir

Truman Burbank is a normal man,

living in a normal town. His job is a desk clerk for a insurance company, living an ordinary life. However, he is Bored of his life, not wanting the same repetitive day, and wanting to go out and experience the world. In reality, Truman was an unwanted as a baby. His father, a careless TV-Producer made up the ‘Truman Show’ which is known as the greatest show on earth, every second Truman’s life being recorded, live. Truman’s “world” is in fact a huge set, surrounded by water and actors, faking to not know him and be a surrounding

in his life with a headpiece in the ear, looking over him every time. The idea of surrounding the set of water was made specifically for him not to cross the border as he was traumatised of the sea. Ever since he was a baby, the whole world has been watching over him, from his embarrassing moments, his achievements and so forth. One day, Truman accidentally bumps into a catering area backstage and gets pretty suspicious. He starts to suspect his whole life and tries to find a reason. What he does about his discovery will have you laughing, crying and ch eering.

Verdict: a serious message about modern life with some amazing acting from Carey and direction from Aussie director Peter Weir.

Forrest Gump (1994) Director: Robert Zemeckis

Forrest Gump is a man with low IQ,

always living his life with optimism and persistence, never once doubting himself. With the help of his supportive mother, he leads on his life accomplishing his own goal. Although he faces situations throughout his life, this has never affected him to change his thoughts and happiness, believing that good things will happen if he chases after his dream.

He soon finds out that he has the ability of running faster than average people, becoming a key to his life where he is able to run away from his bullies and achieve football scholarship.

He joins the Vietnamese army, saving many soldiers’ lives, winning medals and inspires people to jog, becoming famous for his own ability.
