The term “Geoinformatics” applies to both science and technology and integrates remote

sensing, photogrammetry, Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), geodesy, surveying, mapping the features of Earth, geomatics engineering, navigation, cartography, arti cial intelligence, expert system, database management and project management. Geoinformatics is a modern discipline which integrates acquisition, processing, analysis, discrimination and management of spatially referenced data, i.e. data identi ed according to their locations. It uses terrestrial, marine, airborne,

and satellite-based sensors to acquire spatial and other data. It includes the process of transforming spatially referenced data from di erent sources into common Information Systems with well-de ned accuracy characteristics. It is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing domain expertise from a range of frontier technologies. e real world problems of development are analyzed much more comprehensively and addressed more scienti cally by their virtual representation, incorporating

socio-economic data for better decisions and solutions. is technology is applied in natural resources and environmental management.

Geoinformatics can link Government departments, enterprises and users to a common and shared multi-dimensional spatial database so that everyone can have access to the same set of les on web enabled interface at the same time for di erent applications. Easy access to data or information with common geographic-reference using high-speed communication network can help citizens to improve their e ciency and Government to make

better decisions that would have positive impact on the community and environmental aspects of life. GIS applications are evolving rapidly. ese applications have evolved from desktop environments to enterprise-wide deployment, and are entrenched in mainstream IT applications. e widespread use of Wi-Fi and mobile phones have enabled service providers to o er personalized information to subscribers, most of which happens to be location speci c.

Foreseeing the great demand for technical manpower in the ever expanding eld of

Geoinformatics, the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Centre (KSRSAC) initiated an accredited M.Tech Geoinformatics programme in association with the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, and Survey of India (SOI) from the academic year 2004-05. However, SOI ceased to continue with the program since the academic year 2008. is career-oriented, industry-relevant course is multidisciplinary, and caters to the burgeoning demand for quali ed Geoinformatics professionals from both Government and Private sectors. e course imparts sound domain knowledge, i.e. practical skill and hands-on experience in handling current, real world projects.

Course Objectives ere is a wide gap between the supply and demand for experts in the geospatial industry. e major objective of this course is to bridge this gap. e essential objectives of this course are to make the participants select and digitally process the image and interpret satellite imageries or aerial photographs or any other remotely sensed data and generate geospatial information for decision making. e objectives in detail are:

• Analyse a problem encountered in professional geoinformatics practice and develop an appropriate method to study and/or solve the problem.

• Select and develop suitable methods for geospatial framework, data collection and processing.

• Utilise geographic information science and earth observation technology to generate, integrate, analyse and visualize spatial data.

• Apply research skills to formulate and carry out independent research in the general eld of geoinformatics, possibly as part of a

M.TECH PROGRAMME IN GEOINFORMATICS

multidisciplinary research and development project.

• Communicate and defend ndings of research work.

• To understand basic concepts and techniques of statistical analysis which serve as a prerequisite for understanding digital image processing and GIS.

• Understand the basic concepts of photogrammetry systems and techniques of extraction and analysis of information from aerial/satellite, stereo data; fundamentals of GPS and geodesy, computational intelligence, database concepts, database management systems and their applications in natural resources management and for addressing urban planning and environmental management.

• To enable the students to formulate, plan, execute and manage GIS projects by amalgamation of geospatial technologies to various domains.

• Developing skills in utilization of technologies of remote sensing, GIS & GPS, and also enabling the geospatial applications on web.

Admission to M.Tech Geoinformatics is open to all the candidates who have passed the

B.E. Examination with not less than 50% of marks in aggregate of all years of degree examinations (5% relaxation for SC/ST and category 1 candidates), in Civil, Environmental, Computer Science and Information Science disciplines of VTU or any other equivalent university or institution. Candidates with GATE examination quali cation are given preference. If su cient GATE quali ed candidates are not available, the candidates are selected based on merit and ranking obtained in the Post Graduate Common Entrance (PGCET) examination held by KEA and through counseling. e sponsored candidates from State or Central Government and Quasi Government organizations are eligible and 5 seats are reserved for them subject to merit in PGCET.

Medium of instruction is English. Attendance, evaluation system and other requirements are followed as per VTU regulations.

Fee/Scholarship e tuition fee for rst and second semester in rst year is `.60,000/- besides, e-learning, examination and other fees of around `.5,000/-; and the same rate of fee holds good for third and fourth semester during the second year. GATE quali ed candidates are eligible for reimbursement of fee, and stipend paid at the rate of `.5,000/- per month. e students belonging to Backward Classes and SC/ST are also eligible for the fee concession and scholarship provided by the Social Welfare Department as per rules.
