THE NATIONAL DOWN SYNDROME CONGRESS ANNUALCONVENTION IS COMING TO SAN ANTONIO. What a greatopportunity for parents, educators, therapists, and othersinterested in learning more about Down syndrome!

Friday, August 5 - Sunday, August 7JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!Visit www.ndsccenter.org to register as a Volunteer or as anattendee for the General Convention, Youth & Adults Conference, and Brothers & Sisters Conference.

The General Convention offers parents and professionals anopportunity to learn from the best speakers from around the worldand share experiences with one another. To enhance theconvention experience, the Pre-Conference Sessions on Friday offeran opportunity to go in-depth on a single topic. Teens and adultswith Down syndrome (age 15 and over) will be empowered at theYouth & Adults Conference. Siblings of individuals with Downsyndrome (middle school through college) will have a chance tolearn and be heard at the Brothers & Sisters Conference. Thisyear, we'll be offering Kids’ Camp, a supervised place for youngerkids to gather while the rest of the family attends conferenceworkshops. It truly is like a giant family reunion!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!Volunteer support is vital to making this a memorable event forattendees. The DSA is supporting the convention by providingover 300 volunteers age 18 or over. Our most important volunteerneed is support for the Youth & Adults Conference. In order toprovide the best experience possible for these self-advocates(youth & adults ages 15 and older with Down syndrome), weneed extensive support over the three days (approximately 85people each day!).

The volunteers guide and interact with the self-advocatesthroughout the events of the day. Though it is not a requirementto commit to all three days, the consistency and familiaritycreated by having the same volunteers provide supportthroughout the conference is ideal. No previous experience isnecessary just flexibility, the desire to interact directly with self-advocates and the willingness to have fun. Other volunteeropportunities through the general convention includeregistration, audiovisual support, session hosts, bilingual Spanishspeakers, and floaters. If you are interested in volunteering or if

you know of student groups, corporate groups or others whowould like to volunteer, visit the NDSC convention website toregister or contact the DSA office at 210-349-4372 [email protected].

EXHIBITORSThe exhibit floor at the convention is comprised of organizationsand companies that provide information, technology, resources, products and services to a large and receptive audience.Exhibiting at the convention will give your company exposure tothe more than 2,500 people expected to attend. For moreinformation or to register, visit the NDSC website atwww.ndsccenter.org. Registration deadline is June 24.

SOUVENIR JOURNAL MESSAGE OPPORTUNITYThe NDSC invites exhibitors, speakers, vendors, families andothers to place a message in the convention program, theSouvenir Journal, which will be distributed to more than 2,500people. Messages may provide information, recognition, goodwishes or may memorialize an individual. Business logos andphotos may be included.

Adult Matters!by Julie Cheatwood - Adult Matters! Director

Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for ouradults with DS ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing anenvironment to help them further develop their social skills, buildfriendships among other adults with DS, and offer them safe andappropriate interactions within the community. In order to fosterthat environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriatepeer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them.DSA will pay the participation fee for both of them as well as a 1:4chaperone ratio. We realize that our adults depend on family andfriends for transportation to and from these activities, so we willalways try to plan activities that offer a place whereparents/guardians can gather nearby (restaurant, coffee shop, etc.)and visit with each other during the event. Please RSVP for eachevent to Stephanie Anderson at [email protected] or210-349-4372.

Keeping Up With Downs

DSA

By Elizabeth Carnes

When I was asked towrite an article on myson Anthony I thought, “Idon’t want it to be atypical mom story; Iwant people reading toget to hear what Anthonyhas to say.” So Iinterviewed him. If youfind yourself a little lostat times, remember, he’ssixteen; much of what’s going on in his life is confusing to me, aswell! I hope you enjoy “life according to Anthony”; I’ll fill in a fewmissing pieces along the way (italics).

Mom: This is an interview with Anthony Carnes. (I figured Ishould start off with something he’d be interested and excited about)Anthony, what is your favorite band?

Anthony: My favorite band is The Newsboys, and I like thembecause they are a perfect band. (The Newsboys are a Christianband from Australia that Anthony is very fond of)

Mom: What do you like about The Newsboys?

Anthony: They know about Christ, and they love God so much, and they sing praises to the Lord.

Mom: Okay, Anthony how old are you?

Anthony: Sixteen year old.

Mom: And Anthony, what school do you go to?

Anthony: High School Madison.

Mom: And what is your favorite thing about Madison HighSchool?

Anthony: Cafeteria.

Mom: The cafeteria, and what do you like most about thecafeteria?

Anthony: Chicken fried steak.

Mom: Anthony, do you have any brothers and sisters?

Anthony: Well, one’s named Jonathan and the other one’s namedKristina.

Mom: And do they both live with you?

Anthony: Yes.

Mom: Does your sister live with you?

Anthony: So much! (I later figured out he thought I said love, notlive)

Mom: Does your sister live in the same house as you?

Anthony: No

Mom: No, where does she live?

Anthony: She lives in LaGrange.

Mom: Her last name is LaGrange, because she got married, butshe lives in Temple.

Mom: Anthony, what is your favorite musical instrument?

Anthony: Drums.

Mom: Drums, and do you have a drum set?

Anthony: No.

Mom: Would you like a drum set?

Anthony: Yes.

Mom: Anthony what do you do for fun; do you play any sports?

Anthony: I play basketball and soccer. At soccer we have a greatteam.

Mom: Cool, basketball & soccer. And who are your friends thatyou play those sports with?

Anthony: Amanda, Billy, Gabriel and all those kids.

Mom: Where’s your favorite place to go on vacation?

Anthony: In Pennsylvania to see my aunt, she puts eyeliner on me,and she takes care of me, she makes me chocolate-chip cookiesand hot chocolate and she makes the best pancakes. (The leadsinger of the Newsboys wears eyeliner)

Mom: Wow, she lets you do all the things mom doesn’t. That doessound like a good aunt. And Anthony where do you live?

Anthony: Australia.

Mom: Australia!? Wow, that’s a long way from San Antonio, Texasisn’t it?

Anthony: Yeah.

Mom: What’s your favorite animal?

Anthony: Jaws.

Mom What’s Jaws, what kind of animal?

Anthony: A great white shark.

Mom: And why do you like great white sharks so much?

Anthony: Because they’re the most dangerous animals on earth.

Mom: Have you ever seen a great white shark in person?

Anthony: Well in the ocean, I saw one before in the movie, and inevery beaches.

Mom: Wow, have you ever been to the beach?

Anthony: Well, you took me once in New Jersey, and I saw theocean.

Mom: That’s right I did ... let’s see, what do you love the mostabout your church?

Anthony: At my church, I just worship the Lord, and I see myfriends like Kalvin and Josiah, Isaiah, my favorite best friends Ilove them, and Bruce Blakey my first best friend because I like meand him to talk together about Christ and the gospel and how tospread the gospel for the people.

Mom: Well, Anthony, I just want to say thanks for answering all ofMom’s questions. I hope that people will read this and realize youare a smart and very interesting kid.

Anthony: Yeah, me too. Can I go play now?

Meet Anthony
