Dr. Wallace W. Horton: Musician,

Preacher, Teacher, Coach

As Dr. Wallace (Wally) Horton prepares to retire after 45 years of fulltime ministry, with grateful hearts we celebrate his 15 years of ministry to us. Called to be Minister of Worship and Spiritual Transformation at Prince of Peace, Wally has faithfully presented the Gospel in each worship service he prepared, exhorting and blessing us in every worship experience—whether we are choristers or musicians under his creative direction or congregants in pews listening for God’s voice and Holy Spirit inspiration. Dr. Horton’s academic and theological credentials that helped prepare him for a life of music and worship ministry are distinguished: a B.A. (1970) and M.A. (1976) from Long Beach State U.; Lutheran Teachers Colloquy (Commissioned Minister of Religion) (1971) from Concordia U. in Seward, NE; Masters in Church Music (1987) from Biola U. and Talbot Seminary; and Doctor of Worship Studies (2005) from the Robert Webber Institute for Worship Studies, Orange Park, FL.

Growing up in Anaheim, CA with his brother and sister, Wally attended Zion Lutheran School for eight years, and there he first experienced the call of God on his life. Wally preached his first sermons as a 2nd grader at Zion after he and a classmate were "selected" to be the classroom co-pastors. (Wally’s mom made his robe and his dad made the lectern.) Some early mentors who influenced Wally were his piano teacher Dorothy Cook; his 6th grade teacher/music director at Zion, Mr. M.C. Schlieske; and Mr. Walter Knigge, 8th grade teacher and Zion principal. Others who have significantly impacted his life are Doug Hensley (Bethany), dear friend Dr. Bill Locke (mentor at Biola), world renowned composer and organist Paul Manz, Dr. Wilbur Held (organ teacher), Rector John Yates (The continued next page

Falls Church), and Dr. Robert Webber (founder of The Institute for Worship Studies).

From 1970 to 1989, Wally served as a 5th grade teacher and coach, directed music bands, choirs, and handbells, and then as both Organist and Minister of Music at Bethany Lutheran Church and School in Long Beach where he directed eight choirs, including the 80 voice Adult Choir and ensembles.

It was in June 1971 at Concordia Teachers College, as Wally pursued his LCMS Colloquy, that God further revealed His plans and great gift for him, for that is when and where he met Joan, also a teacher and his beautiful wife of now 43 years, who was attending a summer workshop. After a whirlwind courtship that had God’s hand in it from the outset, they married in 1972. Wally and Joan continue to model a beautiful marriage as they do their faith. Blessed by the birth of their daughter Rebecca in 1976 and son David in 1981, Wally and Joan’s family was further blessed with daughter-in-law Becky and granddaughters Esther and Grace.

During his years at Bethany, Wally received more than 20 calls to other Lutheran churches, but in 1989 God led Wally to accept a position at The Falls Church in Falls Church, VA. There he served the body of Christ for 11 years as Senior Organist, directed the 70-voice adult choir, directed two youth choirs, developed the church orchestra and oversaw the worship life of the 2500 member church. Wally composed and published the choral hymn and anthem, “Our Lives You Rule”, performed for the dedication of The Falls Church’s new sanctuary in 1992.

Not everyone knows that musically-gifted Dr. Horton is also a talented athletic Coach Horton, coaching boys and girls basketball for 25 years! From 1997-2001 he was an assistant coach of girls basketball at WT Woodson High School, from 2003-2006 at Chantilly HS, and then served as Head Coach of the girls varsity team at Centreville HS from 2006-2012, during which time he was twice named Concorde District’s Coach of the Year and also acclaimed as the Northern Region’s Coach of the Year in 2008. In addition, Dr. Horton also taught choral music at Robert Frost Middle School in Fairfax from 1997-2003.

In September 2000, Dr. Horton accepted the call to become our Minister of Celebration, the first Core Ministry at Prince of Peace. During Wally’s leadership among us he developed our multi-generational church orchestra, continued to develop a music and worship ministry that has touched the lives of people of all ages, and oversaw the installation of our beautiful 27-rank Steiner-Reck Pipe Organ. Integral to Music and Worship Ministry, the entire area of prayer and spiritual transformation at Prince of Peace has been emphasized and encouraged through the work of Dr. Horton and many faithful prayer partners.

We give joyful thanks to God and to Wally for his fruitful and tireless ministry to us! And yet—while we support Wally’s and Joan’s decision to rest from their labors and enjoy a more leisurely pace of life, we boldly pray that Wally’s ministry though music and worship will continue for many years, and that our fellowship will continue.

Christ-centered and life-changing Bible Study, prayer, and Christian conversation.

Excellence in Leadership – A Study of Nehemiah (Fellowship Hall) How can we love fully and lead others at the same time? Nehemiah shows how to be an action and prayer-oriented leader, a servant, and realist while loving God above all. Boundaries – When to Say Yes, When to Say No (Room 26 - Library) How can we love fully and not burn out? This study offers Biblically-based encouragement in how to set healthy boundaries that glorify God and help others. Armed and Dangerous – Praying the Lord’s Prayer with Boldness (Room 21) This course seeks to connect God’s promises to prayer and raise the confidence of those who desire to pray with more boldness. Home Remodeled: Hope for the Family (School Lobby - Downstairs) This come and go group offers flexibility for the busy parent or person. Each week a new theme is discussed that encourages families to love more fully and become better equipped in their family faith walk. Acts of the Apostles (Room 30, led by T.K. Kearney) This small group study focuses on the early church’s growth despite cultural opposition. Ephesians (Room 24, led by John Storm) This small group study encourages believers to walk as “imitators of God.”

Personal Ministry Training

Saturday, October 31, 9:30am -12pm with light breakfast Every week visitors come to Prince of Peace because they have spiritual needs. God wants to meet their needs, and God normally works through people – that is you and me. That is why we have Care Ministry. This ministry has had an important impact by reaching people who want God’s help or hope. But we need more people involved in Care Ministry to meet all the needs.

Is Care Ministry something you could do? The job description is basically

to make friends.

To learn more, you are invited to attend Orientation and Training by Pastor Carl and Gary Miller on October 31, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m., in Room 21, accompanied by a light breakfast at 9:15 a.m.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

Every woman is a leader. Whether you're leading little ones at home, teaching a class of youth, leading a team in a corporate setting, or a group of ESL students - God has called all women to model and share His love with those whom He has placed in our life. How can we lead others from a place of grace and generosity rather than duty or obligation? At this year's women's retreat, we will study the virtue of Christ, and how the Holy Spirit creates and forms virtue within us. There will be social time carved out for fun and fellowship as well as time for silence and reflection. Register now as spaces will fill up fast! Tuesday, October 27, 7pm at the Harris Home, 8409 Chillum Ct., Springfield, VA Wednesday, October 28, noon at Milano’s Restaurant Faith Shapers is an opportunity for women to explore literary selections that will grow and shape your faith through reading and discussion in community. We encourage participation by women of all ages and stages in their faith life and invite you to bring a friend or neighbor. This month’s selection is Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning. Many Christians don’t think they can express real feelings around others – or to God. Manning encourages us to let go of the stressful, unreal imposter lifestyle and freely accept our identity as a child of God. The books may be purchased in the church office. Thank You from Vine and Branches

We are writing to thank you, our Mother church, for your support of the ministry of Vine & Branches Lutheran Church. Your support and participation in the growing body of Christ at Vine & Branches has brought the light of Christ’s love to many in the Dulles South community.

In the year since the first worship service in September 2014, there have been many ministry milestones at Vine & Branches:

o 2 infant baptisms, 3 elementary & middle school baptisms, and 1 adult baptism, o 2 confirmands – who gave their faith testimony to the congregation during worship, o becoming a chartered LCMS congregation, o installing Pastor Dax, and o welcoming 185 worshipers to our first Easter service

Your vision and gifts have made a difference in the lives of many people. The dream of the five original families just one year ago has blossomed into an average worship size of 100 each weekend. The Holy Spirit is drawing new families to experience word and sacrament and you can feel the blessing of being a proud mother congregation.

Thank you for walking with us at Vine & Branches as together we follow the Lord’s lead.

Sparklers Luncheon Trip

The Sparklers luncheon trip for German cuisine to Fredericksburg was a great success and everyone had a wonderful time. On our return, our driver Pastor Tim stopped at the renowned "CARLS' Ice Cream Parlor for dessert. We also had a wonderful surprise waiting for us. Pastor Hinz and Dianna were there to greet us and we all had a few moments of comradery. Our next luncheon will be November 29th, and details will be provided later; however, I can assure you it will be a pleasant Thanksgiving surprise! Peter Gerber (Pug) 703-451-7747 [email protected]

Baby Bottle Campaign

Help change a life!! A little change can go a long way to helping change the life of a pregnant woman or teen choosing life as an alternative to abortion. Continue to collect change in your baby bottles. Please pray for the women who come to the Sanctity of Life Ministries' centers to help women who are unprepared to face a pregnancy. Pray that their hearts would be drawn to the Savior, and burdened for the truth of life in the womb. Your change can make a huge difference in the life of a young woman.

Operation Christmas Child

Shoe boxes collected through November 15 Please join us in supporting Operation Christmas Child for the Christian humanitarian organization Samaritan's Purse. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world. A pyramid of empty shoeboxes will be available in the Narthex. We ask that you prayerfully consider packing one to help touch the life of a child in need. A shoebox filled with small toys and other gifts can open hearts to God's love. A check donation of $7 with your filled shoebox will cover shipping expenses. Informational brochures and gift suggestions can be found near the shoeboxes. We will be collecting filled boxes at Prince of Peace through Sunday, November 15. At that time, the boxes will be delivered to a local distribution center for the next leg of the journey into a child's hands. Heidi Frego 703-313-7640 [email protected]

Communication Forum Success

Thirty members attended the October 13 Communication Forum where the Strategic Communication Plan was unveiled. A congregational survey, two previous forums, and many discussions contributed to crafting this plan. Thank you for your participation!

The next step is to prepare specific protocols to enact the strategic plan. Each protocol or procedure will be easy to follow and will be written to better position Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and School to share the good news of Christ Jesus by using the well defined strategy and a variety of communication methods and modes. Mailings, phone calls, web pages, social media, and face-to-face conversations are just a few of the many ways that God has given us to communicate His story. All will be included!

Thank you for the lively discussion and suggestions that you brought to the Communication Forum. Your time and interest is appreciated and valued as we work together in His kingdom.

Please direct any questions to Nancy Boriack, [email protected] or 703-201-4473.

Ministry fairs are a wonderful opportunity for you to find out about the multitude of ministries offered at Prince of Peace and the many volunteers that support them. They also provide you the chance to get involved and serve in areas of interest to you. Please make time to stop by the ministry displays and visit with the leaders who are currently involved. Faith Stories

Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming his people for himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to him.

I shared healing prayer with someone who was hurting this week and as a result of prayer this person experienced peace.

You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the http://popfaithstories.wordpress.com , or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

Thank you to all involved in the retirement reception for me on September 27, especially Jeanne Dahl, Debbie Donohue, Yolanda Bienhoff, Nancy Sinclitico, and Jennie Smith. Retiring from PoP is hard. I loved my part-time job, but there is a time for everything. Marcella Schmidt
