Visits this Weekend

We welcome Thomas Winterstein to Prince of Peace! Thomas is being considered for a leadership position on our staff specifically in the areas of Contemporary Music and Communications. Members will have the opportunity to meet with Thomas in the church narthex before and after the services this weekend. PoP Members Cast

Votes on Several

Important Decisions

During the Voter’s Meeting held last Wednesday evening, the Voters reviewed the annual report from the 2016 Fiscal Year (FY) Ministry Plan; reviewed the projections of the 2017 FY Ministry Plan; approved the 2017 FY Budget; elected Erin Summers and Julie Eichhorst to second two-year terms on the Board of Servant Leaders (BoSL); and amended the Love in Action (LIA) charter to align the language of the charter with the intent of the donors. The BoSL members are the “keepers of the vision” under the policy based governance model followed by Prince of Peace. The BoSL approves the annual ministry plan and sets the policies the Senior Pastor will follow as he implements the vision of the church. The annual budget provides the resources for the implementation of the annual ministry plan. Erin Summers and Julie Eichhorst join Chris Martin, Kim Robinson, Dave McLean and Leon DeBolt as elected members (and Pastor Carl and Jennie Smith as ex-officio members) of the BoSL. The new language of the LIA charter clearly permits the Board, which includes the pastor as an advisory member, to provide missional funding for groups whose doctrinal practice aligns with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The 2017 FY Ministry plan is built on the goal of engaging members in ministry through better communication, discovery of passions and gifts, and learning to share stories of salvation.

Update on Our Daughter Church, Vine and Branches

A letter from Ray Schaible: Last week we signed and settled on our LCEF loan ($8.3M) for purchase of our nine acres of land on Gum Spring Road and for construction of our Phase I building (See plan above of church offices, kitchen, fellowship hall, and CDC rooms). Our plan is to occupy the building in August of 2017—God willing! We have overcome a lot of challenges and problems to date but with God’s help (and yours!) we have been provided the solution each time! The Devil has tried again and again to attack us but God’s armor has protected us! This is but one more major milestone we have reached so it is time to give thanks and praise to the Lord with the realization that the road ahead still has many turns and bumps which we must still negotiate. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you from Prince of Peace, Our Saviors Way and Good Shephard Lutheran Church for being steadfast in your support of our mission plant! We couldn’t have done this without your prayers, financial support and good counsel and advice. Please pass our hearty thanks on to your congregations. We ask for your continued support and blessings!!! In Christ, Ray Schaible, Chairman, Board of Governors, Vine and Branches Lutheran Church

Search Committee Considers Two Leaders

In response to the needs identified by the Exploratory Team for leadership in Member

Engagement, Communications, and Music Ministry, the Search Committee is considering

recommending two staff members for the Music Ministry at Prince of Peace.

One staff member would provide leadership in the area of traditional worship with additional

duties in member engagement. The other staff member would provide leadership in the area of

contemporary worship with additional duties in communications. Specific responsibilities for each

ministry would be given to each staff member in accordance with their current gifts and abilities,

which would be expected to change as our staff gains experience and works together to meet the

needs of the people God sends our way.

Position descriptions will be available at the Town Hall meeting scheduled for August 7th at 9:30 a.m.

BLESS Preparation Through Training in Care Ministry Procedures

Saturday, August 6, 9:30am-12pm Room 21 Our church is currently emphasizing blessing neighbors. We do this in response to Christ’s love and command. We are using a model that has five aspects: Bonding with neighbors (B); Listening to them and their need (L): Engaging them in caring conversation (E) Serving them by helpful acts or prayer for their needs (S); and Sharing our faith with the life-changing news of what Jesus Christ has done for us and them (S). In so doing we are reflecting Christ’s compassion for us.

So, are you growing in your capacity for blessing people? We are blessed to be a blessing – to “pass it on.” Still, you may be frustrated when trying to apply these concepts in everyday life. Ready-made opportunities for blessing are here for you at PoP. Care Ministry Teams provide a way to put your compassion into action and could use your help. Through Care Ministry you can receive training in practical and specific ways how to bless others with God’s love and power for living. Then you can practice them in low risk situations along with other team members. To learn more, you are invited to attend Care Ministry Orientation and Training conducted by Pastor Carl and Gary Miller on August 6, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m., with light breakfast at 9:15 a.m. in Room 21. to Haiti in February 2017

Planning Meeting Thursday, August 4, 7:30pm, Room 26

There will be a planning meeting to discuss PoP’s next mission trip to support the school and clinic at the Village of Hope in Haiti. The trip is planned for Thursday, February 9, through Tuesday, February 14, 2017. There is room for at least 14 people on the trip. Mission team members should plan on incurring a total cost for the trip per person (airfare, room & board in Haiti, etc.) of about $900 to $1000. Please pray for the Lord’s guidance on the possibility of your joining the mission team. The needs in Haiti are great and a visit to that country can be a life changing experience. Volunteers are also needed to help with trip preparations and support. If you are interested in learning more please plan to attend the August 4 meeting. Mark August 4 on your calendar and join us at that meeting to learn more about the trip. James Roberts (202) 286-5001 [email protected]

Eccumenical Community Helping Others -- Summer News

Important Volunteer Position Available ECHO is looking for a person to fill a very important food-related volunteer position: School Food Drive Coordinator. Duties include contacting school principals in Burke and Springfield by mail to request a food drive, then supplying those who accept with information about most-needed items. This volunteer also keeps track of the dates of these drives and contacts people on a list of volunteer drivers to make sure that the food is picked up and brought to ECHO. This is not a new position and there are written guidelines for the volunteer to follow as well as a history of wonderful interactions with neighboring schools. If you are interested and would like more information, e-mail [email protected].

School Supplies Needed for Back to School Program Right now, ECHO needs the following school supplies for the Back to School program: highlighters, crayons (24 box), pocket folders, pencil pouches, glue sticks, protractors, calculators, and paperback dictionaries. A full list of supplies is on our website at www.echo-inc.org.

Items ECHO Cannot Accept ECHO distributes donated food, clothing and household items to hundreds of local families. Our volunteers evaluate all donations before they are made available to clients. There are some things we cannot accept because of limited storage capacity, or because we cannot insure that they are safe for clients to use. Here are some things that ECHO cannot accept: anything broken, food that has been opened, infant car seats or walkers, cribs with drop down sides, clothes hangers, exercise equipment, adult books, encyclopedias. Thank you for bringing ECHO things that are clean and in good repair that we can give to families who are experiencing hardship.

Remember ECHO at Your Workplace United Way Campaign or CFC For those who have workplace campaigns for United Way or CFC, please remember that ECHO is a participating charity and derives much of its ability to meet the emergency needs of our community from these gifts. Our United Way number is 8426, and our CFC number is 74224.

All donations can be brought to ECHO at 7205 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, on weekdays between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or between 7 and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Faith Stories

Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming His people for Himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to Him.

Gale Gault (listed on prayer sheet) has undergone surgery. The cancer has all been removed and his prognosis is very good. Thanks be to God!

On our way to Together 2016 we stopped to pray with a homeless woman who was crying. We did not have much to offer but Jesus could give her everything.

You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the popfaithstories.wordpress.com, or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
