Queensland State of Origin legend and Local Government Association of Queensland Ambassador Shane Webcke will be on hand to inspire locals to get active at the inaugural Douglas Shire Sport & Recreation Expo.Webcke, one of Queensland’s finest players who played 21 State of Origins, 19 Tests for Australia, and won four premierships with the Brisbane Broncos, said the benefits of participating in sport were enormous.“I grew up in a small community a little place called Leyburn, about an hour and a half south west of Toowoomba,” Webcke said.“Looking after your own personal health and wellbeing is the only way you are going to give yourself to give the energy to go the distance.”Webcke has never settled for near enough is good enough - he is a leader and a role model who is highly commended and revered by his peers. He is also a loyal family man and successful businessman, the publican

of an historic watering hole and a television sports presenter. He has published his autobiography titled Warhorse and earned a reputation as an engaging motivational speaker and raconteur. While Shane’s sporting story is enlightening, his insight into the success of the Broncos is engrossing. A consummate team man, who realises better than anyone that there is no easy way to achieve success, his anecdotes and principles on life are truly inspirational.

Webcke aims to inspire Douglas

The Port Douglas Junior Football Club is a not for profit organisation and our main aim is to provide a safe and fun environment for your children to enjoy themselves, while being involved in a team sport. The age levels we field are Under-6s (five or six years old), U/8s, U/9s, U/11s, U/13s, U/15s and U/17.5s (Colts). All grades, up to and including U/13s, are open to boys and girls. All of our coaches have to be and are accredited through an AFL coaching course and hold a “working with children” Blue Card. All games except the Colts (Friday night games) are played on Sundays at various grounds in the Port Douglas/Mossman and Cairns area, with most grades at the same venue on the same day. This allows for the opportunity for our members to car pool to games if transport is an issue.

There are no games allocated during school holidays due to the number of players that are unavailable during this period. This also gives parents and coaches a well deserved break.Training is held at the “The Croc Pit” at the Port Douglas Sports Complex on Wharf St Port Douglas every Thursday at 4pm and every Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm for the U/13s, U/15s and Colts. If you require any further information please don’t hesitate to contact the club on the phone number above or come down to one of the training nights and have a look for yourself. Your child can join in with the training and see if they like it. They can even play up to two games before becoming a member, just to make sure it’s the right fit for them. Our first training will be on Monday 27 February from 4pm. The first game is on Sunday 5 March.

Douglas Derby Divas (DDD) is the first all-women’s flat track roller derby league for the Douglas Shire and the newest league for North Queensland. Roller derby is a contact sport that was traditionally an all-women sport but in recent times has seen more men join in the game and now there are unisex teams, men’s and women’s teams. Roller derby is played by two teams of five members made up of a jammer and four blockers. The idea of the game is to allow your team’s jammer to lap members of the opposing team which scores points for the team. The blockers in effect have a defensive and an offensive role, which is blocking the other team’s jammer and assisting their own jammer to score points.

Roller Derby is a fun and exhilarating sport, you don’t necessarily need to be fit to begin with as you will get fit along the way, as well as meet new people. We are a family friendly league and encourage the community; women, men and kids to come and try it out. Already 2017 is proving to be an exciting year with the Divas organising monthly discos, Learn to Skate programs and a junior team is in the pipeline. If you love everything about the sport but aren’t keen on bumping booties, why not become a referee, non-skating official or a committee member. Please email the Divas at [email protected] if you would like further information or head over the Facebook and like our page.

DOUGLAS Athletics is all about the motto of “family, fun and fitness”. The club aims to develop children of all abilities by promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle through family and community involvement in athletics activities. Over the season athletes are encouraged to improve their performances, sportsmanship and social skills, with each of the events

being age-appropriate according to motor development and a gradual process of skill learning. Children contribute to their own active and healthy lifestyle through a range of fun activities such as play training, weekly centre competitions and participation in various athletics competitions. Athletics is something the whole family can be a part of.

The Port Douglas Rugby Club Inc has been serious about playing rugby in the Douglas Shire since 2000. With committed supporters, the committee has grown rugby in the Douglas Shire through years of fundraising and the development of a family-friendly, inclusive rugby club. This includes the development of Junior Rugby for inclusion in the FNQ Junior Rugby Union Competition and obtaining certification of Level 3 Good Sports Club, the first in Far North

At Port Douglas Physio we provide a variety of services to support our local sporting clubs so participants can reach their full potential. Although sometimes injuries may occur, most injuries can fortunately be effectively treated, managed, and even prevented by your physiotherapist. If you are suffering from a sports related injury, it is important to have your condition assessed by a physiotherapist.Physiotherapy can help you recover from injury, reduce pain and stiffness, and increase mobility. A physiotherapist can also help you

prevent further injury by listening to your needs and working with you to plan the most appropriate treatment for your condition, including setting goals and treatment outcomes. One of the most important parts of physiotherapy is to teach you how to take care of your own body, so you may be given exercises and stretches to do at home. Before you can safely return to your sport after injury it is essential to regain strength, mobility, balance and co-ordination. Your physiotherapist will assess these areas and show you how to improve them.
