Beaumont Primary School First Aid Policy

INTRODUCTION Beaumont Primary School will undertake to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation with regard to the provision of first aid for all employees and to ensure best practice by extending the arrangements as far as is reasonably practicable to children and others who may also be affected by our activities. Responsibility for first aid provision at Beaumont Primary School is held by the Headteacher who is the responsible manager. This is delegated to the Teachers, Teaching Assistants and other nominated staff. All first aid provision is arranged and managed in accordance with the Children’s Services Safety Guidance Procedure All staff have a statutory obligation to follow and co-operate with the requirements of this policy. PURPOSE The purpose of first aid is to ensure that any immediate danger and discomfort is alleviated. First aid is intended to be the minimum level of care, and any further diagnosis or extended care must be passed on to medical professionals. This policy aims to ensure that everyone concerned with first aid, whether practitioner or recipient, is kept safe. PRACTICE Our first aid policy requirements will be achieved by:

Carrying out a First Aid Needs Assessment to determine the first aid provision requirements for our premises

It is our policy to ensure that the First Aid Needs Assessment will be reviewed annually or following any significant changes that may affect first aid provision

Ensuring that there are a sufficient number of trained first aiders on duty and available for the numbers and risks on the premises

Ensuring that there are suitable and sufficient facilities and equipment available to administer first aid

Ensuring the above provisions are clear and shared with all who may require them with First Aid Training

The responsible manager will ensure that appropriate numbers of qualified first aiders and appointed persons have the appropriate level of training to meet their statutory obligations. Qualified First Aid Staff At Beaumont Primary School, all staff, where possible, are trained in First Aid. Paediatric First Aiders are:

First Aiders Where Expiry date

Sharon Bridge KS1 24th September 2021

Gemma Everest KS2 21st November 2020

Katie Liggett EYFS 21st November 2020

Staff will be responsible for administering first aid, in accordance with their training, to those that become injured or fall ill whilst on the premises. There may also be other duties and responsibilities which are identified and delegated to the first aider (e.g. first aid kit inspections).

The qualified first aider is someone who has been trained and holds a First Aid At Work certificate gained from a HSE approved course. Appointed Persons In instances that no first aider is available the minimum requirement is to appoint a person(s) (the Appointed Person(s)) to take charge of first aid arrangements including calling the emergency services when required and taking charge when someone is injured or falls ill. Appointed Person(s)

Rachel Orriss – School Office Manager First Aid Provision Our First Aid Needs Assessment has identified the following first aid requirements:

1 first aid kit in the Reception Classroom

1 first aid kit in the Admin Office

1 first aid kit in the playground / field

1 first aid kit in the staff room

‘Portable’ first aid kits to be taken on trips. It is the responsibility of the qualified first aider/appointed person to check the contents of all first aid kits every half term and restock as necessary. A check list will be included in all first aid kits – see appendix D. The Workroom and access to the disabled toilets, complete with sink and shower cubicle is a designated first aid spaces for treatment, sickness and the administering of first aid where privacy or particular hygiene requirements are necessary. Children with Illnesses A list of children with illnesses that may require first aid treatment is distributed to all teachers and a copy is kept with the accident book. Incident Reporting In the case of a bump to the head, Parent/carers must be telephoned and invited to the school and be asked if they wish to check on their child, this is an ESSENTIAL requirement. For other injuries (minor) the first aider will record the injury and treatment given in a book and they will give the child a sticker that identifies that the pupils has had FA and a FA slip to take home informing the parent/carer that they have been seen by a first aider for a minor injury. All incidents, injuries, especially head injuries, ailments and treatment are reported in the First Aid book and a copy given to the parent/carers via the pupil where possible. The School Office will contact parents by phone if they have concerns about the injury. Staff must complete a SCHOOLS’ INCIDENT REPORT FORM (IRF001SCH) form if they sustain an injury at work and hand into School Office Manager for investigations to be carried out. An injured member of staff or other supervising adult should not continue to work if there is any possibility that further medical treatment is needed. The member of staff or other supervising adult concerned should seek medical advice without delay. Emergency Arrangements Upon being summoned in the event of an accident, the first aider/appointed person is to take charge of the first aid administration/emergency treatment commensurate with their training.

Page 4: BEAUMONT PRIMARY SCHOOL First Aid Policy · First Aid Provision Our First Aid Needs Assessment has identified the following first aid requirements: 1 first aid kit in the Reception

4

Following their assessment of the injured person, they are to administer appropriate first aid and make a balanced judgement as to whether there is a requirement to call an ambulance. In all cases a Senior Leader (SLT - HT,DH or person acting for them) will be involved. The first aider/appointed person is to always call an ambulance on the following occasions:

In the event of a serious injury

In the event of any significant head injury

In the event of a period of unconsciousness

Whenever the first aider is unsure of the severity of the injuries

Whenever the first aider is unsure of the correct treatment

Severe allergic reactions including administration of Epi-pen The first aider will make a judgement if the injury is severe and needs immediate attention then an ambulance will be called without SLT involvement. In the event of an accident involving a child, where appropriate, it is our policy to always notify parents of their child’s accident if it:

is considered to be a serious (or more than minor) injury

requires attendance at hospital Our procedure for notifying parents will be to use all telephone numbers available to contact them and leave a message should the parents not be contactable. In the event that parents cannot be contacted and a message has been left, our policy will be to continue to attempt to make contact with the parents every hour. In the interim, we will ensure that the qualified first aider, appointed person or another member of staff remains with the child until the parents can be contacted and arrive (as required). In the event that the child requires hospital treatment and the parents cannot be contacted prior to attendance, the qualified first aider/appointed person/another member of staff will accompany the child to hospital and remain with them until the parents can be contacted and arrive at the hospital. Procedures As set out in appendix B. Check lists are available in all classrooms, admin office and staffroom – see appendix C. Records All accidents requiring first aid treatment are to be recorded with (at least) the following information:

Name of injured person

Date of the accident

Type of accident (e.g. bump on head etc)

Treatment provided and action taken

Whether a letter was sent home (see appendix A)

Name of the qualified first aider/appointed person Out of School:

Whenever possible take a MOBILE TELEPHONE on trips out of school. Prior consent to use a personal mobile phone must be sought if 2 classes are on trips on the same day.

Teachers to check that pupils who have asthma take their inhalers.

A first aid kit must be taken on all school trips without exception.

Educational Visits

The Headteacher has responsibility for ensuring staff have adhered to the school’s ‘Educational Visits Procedures’ (as set out in the Health & Safety Handbook) when organising a visit.

A Risk Assessment will need to be carried out as part of an educational trip. Particular attention needs to be paid to: a) Outdoor Educational Visits b) Hazardous Activities c) Class Visits d) Swimming Pool Lessons. Swimming instruction is provided by qualified swimming instructors.

We use Hadleigh Pool & Leisure swimming Pool for swimming lessons, and we ensure that pupils adhere to the swimming pool rules.

Administration of Medicines

It is at the Headteachers discretion as to whether staff can administer prescribed medication following parent/carers instructions and the signing by parents of a medical permission form (see appendix E). Before any medication is given, written permission from parents must be sought. Details of the medicine and dosage must be recorded on a School Health Matters (Request for storage and administration of medicine in school) form. Parent/carers will be asked to ring the school at the desired time the medication is to be given.

If other prescribed medicines (such as, asthma inhalers) are brought into the school it is the parent/carers responsibility to ensure that office staff are informed of the child’s condition and advised office staff of how to monitor and administer the medication when needed.

If non-prescribed medication (such as Calpol and anti-histamine) is required in exceptional circumstance, prior permission from the parent/carer must be obtained in all cases. (agreed by the Headteacher)

It is the responsibility of the parent/carers to ensure that inhalers are within their expiry date and that prescribed medication is collected at the end of each day. First Aiders will carry out checks at the end of each term however it is ultimately the responsibility of the parent/carers to ensure that inhalers have not expired.

Inhalers should be handed into the school office at the beginning of each term and sent home before each term time holiday. Any other medicines should be handed into the school office at the start of each school day and sent home daily.

Hygiene Infection Control All staff should take precautions to avoid infection and must follow basic hygiene procedures. Staff must have access to single-use disposable gloves and hand washing facilities, and must take care when dealing with blood or other body fluids and disposing of dressings or equipment. Body Spillages/HIV

No person must treat a pupil who is bleeding, without protective gloves.

Protective gloves are stored in the main first aid area.

Sponges and water buckets must never be used for first aid to avoid the risk of HIV contamination.

All body fluid spillages (Vomit, diarrhoea and Blood) must be cleaned immediately. This is vital if the spread of infection is to be reduced. Gloves should be worn when in contact with blood or body fluid is likely. Ordinary rubber gloves (located with Body Spillage granules in the Caretaker cupboard) are suitable for dealing with spillages. They must be kept for this purpose only. Following use, gloves must be rinsed and left to dry.

Absorbent granules should be dispersed over spillage and left to absorb for a few minutes then swept up into newspaper. A designated dust pan and brush is available for body spillages and is kept in the Caretaker’s Cupboard. Wash the affected area with warm water and detergent and dry. Single use latex gloves should be available for first aid and hygiene care procedures (these are available in the School Office). Once spillages have been put into newspaper, hands must be washed and dried after removal of protective gloves.

Page 6: BEAUMONT PRIMARY SCHOOL First Aid Policy · First Aid Provision Our First Aid Needs Assessment has identified the following first aid requirements: 1 first aid kit in the Reception

6

Once spillages have been put into newspaper it must then be placed in a sealed black plastic bag and put in the external dustbins for domestic waste disposal.

Head Lice

A general letter is sent to the parents of all pupils in a class if there is a case of head lice in the class.

If live lice are noticed in a pupil’s hair the parents are contacted by telephone.

Vomiting

First Aider or appointed person(s) must give the child a sick bag.

First Aider or appointed person(s) must contact the parent/carers to collect the child.

First Aider or appointed person(s) must wait with the child until they are collected.

REVIEW This policy will be reviewed annually, or as necessary in the light of new advice and legislation.
