Dear Dorothy Lynas Families,
With amazing rapidity the year-end approaches, and school processes are in place with respect to
planning for next year. If your family is not returning to Dorothy Lynas in September please
inform the school office at 604-903-3430 as soon as possible to assist us in planning for the
2014-2015 school year. An email will be sent out mid-month outlining the criteria should a
parent wish to make a placement request for their child.
On behalf of the staff, we would like to extend a thank you to all the parents who contributed to
the fabulous Staff Appreciation Lunch. The food was amazing and the ambiance delightful. It
was such a pleasure to enjoy a leisurely meal with colleagues.
The School Planning Council members, Kirsten Bradshaw, Cheryl Learmonth and Giulia
Desrochers have worked tirelessly with Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Breakingbury on the
development of the 2014-2015 School Plan. The Goals for the next school year are in the areas
of social responsibility (including self-regulation), learning though technology and Grade 7-8
transition. The plan will be submitted shortly and once approved will be uploaded in the fall to
our website.
And, as always, we value your input and encourage you to continue to communicate with us!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Arlie Thompson Mrs. Christie Breakingbury

SELF-REGULATION
Staff continue to collaborate on the topic of self-regulation with focus this month on the two
areas: the social and the pro-social.
Social Regulation is the degree to which students are able to understand, assess and act on social
cues (facial expressions, tone of voice) and behave in a socially appropriate manner.
A student who is well-regulated in this domain communicates effectively as listener and speaker,
recovers from repairs/breakdowns in interactions with others (compromises). Furthermore they
understand their own feelings/intentions and those of others. They can respond verbally and
non-verbally and monitor the effects of their responses on others.
Pro-social Regulation is the degree to which students can engage in behaviours that promote
social acceptance, friendship and empathy.
A student who is well-regulated in this domain can help regulate others and co-regulate with
others, is honest with self and others, and has the ability to empathize. Furthermore they have a
keen sense of conviction to “do the right thing” and put others’ needs/ interests ahead of their
own when appropriate.
We support students with the integration of these skills into their daily life at school, recognizing
that these fundamental skills have a significant impact on students’ ability to successfully
regulate in the other domains.

Join the Dorothy Lynas Family Team for One Climb 2014
We are Linnea Goh, Jess McConnell, Hannah Bontinen, Emma Martino and we are members of the
Dorothy Lynas Free the Children Committee.
Did you know that in Africa many girls miss school because they have to walk up to 6 km for water for
their families?
On Saturday June 14th Mrs. Breakingbury and our families are climbing the Grouse Grind with
Whistler Water One Climb (www.oneclimb.ca) to raise money to provide clean water for families in
Kenya through Free the Children.
One Climb is a fun mini local We Day with activities on Grouse Mountain and lots of prizes. Pop
star Victoria Duffield and the band Neverest, along with Free the Children ambassadors Molly
Burke, Hannah Alper, and Spencer West will be inspiring you up the Grouse Grind!
Spencer West climbed Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for African water projects and he has no legs! So
with all our legs Dorothy Lynas Families can climb the Grind to help African families.
Our goal is to pull together as many families as possible from our school. We hope to raise $550 to
represent the number of students at Dorothy Lynas.
You will need an adult to climb with and will need to raise a minimum of $20 registration fee per
participant (Grouse Mountain is giving a free ride down to all registered climbers.) This is a family event,
not a chaperoned school field trip. Our DL family team leader is Kym Bontinen.
To join the DL family team, email us at [email protected]. Please list your names and
your adult supervisor.
If you can’t make the climb you can sponsor the DL Family team at
http://raiseathon.ca/oneclimb/profile/6zvn702 . Charitable receipts are available.
Together Dorothy Lynas Families can make a difference so girls in Kenya can go to school and not on a
water walk. Hope to see you at One Climb!
