DOROTHY LYNAS NEWS CODE OF THE DRAGON *Respect *Responsibility *Safety Friday, November 1, 2013 Dear Dorothy Lynas Families: October was an eventful month here at Dorothy Lynas with the continuation of the Basketball and Cross Country seasons, Thanksgiving activities, Family Photo Nights, crocus planting, Egg Drop, Me To We event attended by Grade 7 members of our Free The Children team, Scare Away Hunger Drive, Walk To School Day, Hallowe’en parade, and many Hallowe’en classroom activities. Staff continued their collaboration through the lens of self-regulation (the ability to remain calmly focused and alert in order to monitor and assimilate a variety of information and stimuli efficiently and effectively) during our Collaboration Time on Wednesday. We reflected on and shared the successes to date and explored the area of emotional self-regulation (how well the child monitors and modifies her emotional responses). Several staff members attended professional day sessions on self-regulation and shared their experiences with us. Our focus on self-regulation aligns with Goal 2 in our School Plan: To improve students’ sense of social responsibility. We also invite you to join us for our Remembrance Day Assembly, on Friday, November 8 th at 2:00 pm. The assembly will be hosted by Grade 7 students with presentations by several classes. This year our assembly will take place in the afternoon in order to allow our Grade 7 students to attend the Remembrance Day event at Seycove. This invitation was extended to all the Grade 7 students from the Seycove Family of Schools in order to increase connections and create positive confident transitions for our students as they enter Grade 8 next year. And to each and every family, the Dorothy Lynas staff sends wishes for a peaceful, thoughtful day of Remembrance on November 11 th – may the vision of world peace guide us all. Dear Dorothy Lynas Families:

October was an eventful month here at Dorothy Lynas with the continuation of the

Basketball and Cross Country seasons, Thanksgiving activities, Family Photo Nights,

crocus planting, Egg Drop, Me To We event attended by Grade 7 members of our

Free The Children team, Scare Away Hunger Drive, Walk To School Day, Hallowe’en

parade, and many Hallowe’en classroom activities.

Staff continued their collaboration through the lens of self-regulation (the ability

to remain calmly focused and alert in order to monitor and assimilate a variety of

information and stimuli efficiently and effectively) during our Collaboration Time on

Wednesday. We reflected on and shared the successes to date and explored the

area of emotional self-regulation (how well the child monitors and modifies her

emotional responses). Several staff members attended professional day sessions on

self-regulation and shared their experiences with us. Our focus on self-regulation

aligns with Goal 2 in our School Plan: To improve students’ sense of social

responsibility.

We also invite you to join us for our Remembrance Day Assembly, on Friday,

November 8th at 2:00 pm. The assembly will be hosted by Grade 7 students with

presentations by several classes. This year our assembly will take place in the

afternoon in order to allow our Grade 7 students to attend the Remembrance Day

event at Seycove. This invitation was extended to all the Grade 7 students from

the Seycove Family of Schools in order to increase connections and create positive

confident transitions for our students as they enter Grade 8 next year.

And to each and every family, the Dorothy Lynas staff sends wishes for a peaceful,

thoughtful day of Remembrance on November 11th – may the vision of world peace

guide us all.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Arlie Thompson Mrs. Christie Breakingbury

Basketball

If you have dropped by the school lately, you

would probably have heard the sound of

basketballs in the gym. The grade 7 students

have been representing Dorothy Lynas with skill

and sportsmanship on our school basketball

teams.

Thank you to the coaches and teacher sponsors,

who have volunteered their time to provide this

experience for the students.

Roots of

Empathy

We are honored to be invited

to participate in the Roots of Empathy

(ROE) program which teaches children about

their own feelings and the feelings of others.

Once every three weeks, Baby Mataya

and her mother, Melissa, visit Mrs. Karmali’s

kindergarten. The kindergarten students

watch the baby grow and interact throughout

the course of the school year, celebrating

developmental milestones and learning to read

the cues the baby provides to let us know how

(s)he is feeling.

For more than ten years across Canada

and internationally, thousands of children have

learned to respect and care for one another

with the lessons started through their Roots

of Empathy baby. We are excited to be able

to take part in this program!

Kindergarten wants your help with craft supplies: Do you have scrap paper,

small carpet squares, small

tiles, small wooden blocks,

buttons, metal discs or any

other materials that you

are able to contribute for

the students to use in the

Kindergarten classes?

Please drop off items in

the office.

Dorothy Lynas X-Country

What a great turn out for the x-country team this

year. We had 63 students this year! ...the highest

turnout we have had!

Thank goodness for the glorious

weather days we had in the month

of October. All the practices and

other meets we enjoyed in fine

weather.

A huge thank you to our parent runners, Sumiko

Kuwayama and Lauren Wagner who led students on

the trails, led stretches, warms ups and supported us

at the meet. Thank you also, to our committed

parents who supported their children in drop-

off/pick-up from practices and meets. Hundreds of

students from across the district come to the meets

so it is often a challenge to get parking and drop off

children.

Thank you for a great season! Dorothy Lynas

students were well represented at the meets.

Mr. K. Williams, Mrs. B. Karmali and Mme Labrecque

Hoodies, Hoodies and Hoodies! Our lost and found is overflowing with hoodies – all of them in good shape but none with a name inside. Please ensure that all your children’s outerwear is labeled with their initials or surname so that lost items can be reunited with their owners! And, check out the lost and found before December 18th after which time the items will be donated to Charity.

WEATHER ALERT

As we get further into the cooler, wetter

weather, parents are reminded to ensure

their children are suitably dressed for the

weather. It is always best to assume that

children will be playing outside during recess

and lunch, and appropriate clothing for the

weather is a must! Please remember how

quickly our weather can change from sun to

heavy rain, and plan for your child’s comfort.

Disaster Response Routes

Have you noticed these yellow signs on all the

major roads? In the event of an emergency, only

First Responders (Fire, Ambulance, and Police)

will be able to use these roads. They (Responders)

need to get where they are required, quickly. It is

important that you do not use these roads, until you

are told, via your battery operated or car radio. Do

you have a kit in your car? It will probably be

several hours until roads are re-opened, if

undamaged & passable.

To learn more about Emergency Preparedness,

enroll your neighbours/community, into a Personal

Emergency Preparedness Workshop. No charge to

North Shore Residents. To arrange, call North

Shore Emergency Management Office @ 604-983-

7440 or check out our website @ www.nsemo.org

Celebration of Life

We acknowledged the birth month of Zarah Norman-Miller with several school

activities. A giant ruler commemorating her love of rulers has been hung in the north

hall with a mural designed by students (currently a work-in-progress). Bird houses

have been hung and crocuses were planted beneath the grass adjacent to Zarah’s

Sunrise Garden which was installed by Dorothy Lynas parents in her memory.

Egg Drop Grade 7 students rose to the challenge: can you build a container for an egg so that it survives a drop of 100 feet without breaking? What are your predictions? Did this one break?
