Doberman DialogSeptember 2016
Next Meeting September21st at Craig and Eleanor French'sDetailed directions and information on page 7
Craig & Eleanor French got their first Doberman 44 years ago. (September,1972) Craig has been training and competing in conformation, obedience, and over 20 years in agility. His first Doberman earned a UD in 1977. In1994, he and his Kiska earned the first UDX in Oregon. In 1995, he startedagility with Teegan (aka the “Dobie-Rocket”) who held championships fromfour agility organizations: USDAA’s ADCH, AKC’s MACH, NADAC’s NATCHand ONATCH, and ASCA’s ATCH. As of August 2016, Craig’s Dobermans(Teegan, Raji, Kes, Risty, Tristan, Kibi, & Kaz) have earned 34 agilitychampionships including 14 MACH’s, 3 ADCH’s, 3 NATCH’s,and 2 O-
NATCH’s. Craig now competes and/or trains 4 Dobermans. Kibi (MX MXBMXJ MJS OF), Kaz (MX MXJ NF), GCH Casi (in training), and Blade (6
months). Counting these 4, Craig has had 16 Dobermans over his 44 yearsin the breed!
Other accomplishments in agility include:Agility DPCA HIT 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001
Partnered in establishing the DPCA Top 20 in agilityWon DPCA Top 20 in 2000 and 2001
Competed in first 5 AKC Invitational’s with as many as 3 dogs2nd MACH, 1st 3 ADCH's, & 1st NATCH with a Doberman
1st Doberman (Kibi) ever to average over 5 yps in Std and 6 yps inJWW for 9 months in 2012
Craig attributes his success as a handler and instructor to a number ofthings, not the least of which is having some “very special dogs who areathletic with strong prey drives and a lot of heart.” He considers himself tobe very “spatially” oriented due to his background as a USAF test pilot. He isalso experienced as an instructor in both in the dog world (going back to hisactive obedience days) and as an instructor pilot. He believes strongly thatevery student/dog team is different and that the techniques provided and themanner in which they are used must fit the needs and capabilities of the
students. His approach focuses on positive motivation since he believes thatnegative reinforcement training is counterproductive.
Craig is a former AKC agility judge and long-time agility columnist. Heresides in Woodburn, Oregon, with his wife Eleanor and 4 Dobermans. Inclinics across the country and in classes at home, he has specialized inmotivation/attention issues, advanced handling techniques, and course
planning strategy.

Directions to "The Dobie-Rockets' Playground" (aka the Frenchs' yard at
16735 Butteville Road N.E.; Woodburn, OR 97071): Take I-5 south to
the Woodburn exit (Exit 271). At the end of the exit ramp, go west (right)
on Highway 219 – it’s about 1.4 miles from there to my house. Go past
the light and continue on 219 as it takes a 90 degree turn to the right, then
take the next right on Butteville Road. (At the point where Butteville Road
intersects, Hwy 219 takes a 90 degree turn to the left – don’t go that way,
you'll cross railroad tracks and pass Woodburn Dragstrip - oops! - turn
around and come back to Butteville.) Go north on Butteville – just as the
road begins to curve to the right, you’ll see a 1-story yellow house with
silver/black roof on the left. (pictures below) That’s us! Be careful as you
pull in because there’s a good drop off as you turn into my driveway. If you
have a problem finding it, our phone number is 503-982-3513. There is
plenty of parking available on the gravel driveway all the way back to the
storage/work shed in the back – first arrivals should be sure to pull all the
way down to insure room for later arrivals. If you plan or have to leave
early, park on the concrete driveway in front of my garage.
Remember ALL club members are invited and most welcome to come to this event.
Craig is one of the pioneers of Doberman agility in the Pacific NW. His dog Teegan, akaDobie Rocket, was the second Doberman to earn an AKC MACH title. Bring your dogand see how fun agility is. Please bring your own chairs. A short meeting will followdinner. Exact time TBD...an email will be sent to all members ASAP with the info.

HOLTERMONITOR
Mt. Hood DPC has a Holter Monitor that is available to MHDPC members only formember’s own dogs.
What is a Holter Monitor? A Holter monitor is a mobile EKG machine that reports acontinual EKG for 24 hours. The Holter records its results on a tape which is sent off to aservice (Alba Medical for $30.00) who converts the information to a report. The reportcan be emailed to you and printed out. Dr. Kathyryn Atkinson is available to read thatreport for a fee. It can be emailed or faxed to her or you can bring it to the health dayclinic.
The test is easy, painless and inexpensive. MHDPC is very lucky to have it available to us.
Our own Licensed Veterinary Technician is available to hook up and remove themonitor and vest. Owner should plan to holter their dog when they are available tomonitor the dog for a full 24 hours.
Holter tape kit: $5
Holter report by Alba: $30
Recommendations: It is recommended that all Dobermans over the age of two haveannual holter testing. Early detection of premature ventricular beats can ADD YEARS tothe life of YOUR DOG. Finding this disease in its earliest forms is the key here. Thedog’s birthday month works well by reminding the owner to do it each year. A clearholter report one year does not release the owner from future testings. These reports canand do change. With Doberman heart disease we need to test annually.
Contact Dawn Danner, @ [email protected], for holter availability
Results are confidential and provided to owner only.
Mt. Hood DobermanPinscher ClubHolter monitor policy
