About this Manual

This manual provides an installation instructions and initial configuration instructions to enable you to get the gateway up and running. For more detailed information about this product see the User Manual.

Intended Audience

This manual is intended for users and system administrators responsible for installing and setting up the gateway platform.

The manual assumes familiarity with the InfiniBand® architecture specification.

Procedure

The following procedure can be done by one person, but inserting the gateway is much easier with two people.1. Place the ESD mat on the floor where you will be working and put on the ESD strap. Make

sure the ESD strap is touching your skin and that the other end is connected to a verified ground.

2. Choose which side of the gateway you want even with the vertical rack support. Either the side with the power supply units or the side with the IB connectors can be even with the ver-tical rack support. The other side of the gateway will be further inside of the rack.

Things to consider before choosing where to mount the rails and rail slides.

Figure 2: Which Side of the Rack Do You Want the Connectors?……….

……….

The figure above shows the power side next to the door and the connector side away from the door. This configuration has more room for the cables and a larger bending radius.

Figure 3: Which Side of the Rack Do You Want the Connectors?

• Do you want the connector side recessed in the rack to allow for larger cable bending radius?• Will the connector side be recessed past other equipment in the rack and will this be problem-

atic?

Note: The rails are to be installed on the side of the rack where the gateway will be recessed into the rack.

3. Screw the brackets onto the gateway. Use the flat head screws to connect the bracket. There are two options for mounting the bracket. One option will place the gateway even with the vertical support of the rack and the second option will recess the gateway further into the rack.

The distance between the rack and the door can be as little as 4 cm on one side of the rack and as much as 18 cm on the other side of the rack. Keep in mind that there can be as many as 36 cables connected to the gateway.

……….

……….

The figure below shows the connector side next to the door and the power side away from the door. This configuration may be necessary to conform to your rack config-uration.

Figure 4: Making Room for the Power Cord

Figure 5: Screwing on the Bracket

Note: The side of the gateway with these brackets will be the side that is even with the vertical rack support.

4. Screw the rails onto the gateway. Use the 5 flat head screws to connect each rail to the gate-way.

5. Clip 4 caged nuts into the holes in the rack you will be using to connect the rail slides. Check that both sides of the gateway, left and right, are in the same position number on the rack.

6. Clip 4 more caged nuts into the holes in the rack you will be using to connect the brackets. Check that both sides of the gateway, front and back, are in the same position number on the rack.

Note: The rail slides are to be installed on the side of the rack where the gateway will be recessed into the rack.

7. Using two of the bolts for each rail slide, install the rail slides to the rack. Tighten the bolts to 9.2 Nm or 81.5 pound inches.

Figure 7: Placement of the Caged Nuts

Figure 8: Put the Power Cord Through the Bracket

8. Place the four bolts for the caged nuts within reach. 9. Slide the gateway into the rails. This is easier with two people.10. Put the gateway into place and screw the bolts into the nuts from step 8. If the power cable is

on this side of the gateway feed the power cable into the slot in the bracket before screwing it to the vertical support.

11. Tighten all of the screws to 9.2 Nm or 81.5 pound inches.12. Plug in the power cables.

Note: When the gateway is plugged in, the status LED may be RED for up to three minutes until the system completes booting up.

13. Check the Status LEDs and confirm that all of the LEDs show status lights consistent with normal operation.

14. You can start connecting all of the cables to the gateway.

Grounding the Gateway

You must install an external ground to all IT components. To this purpose there are two threaded screw holes marked as grounds. Connect a ground wire to one of these grounds and connect the other end to a valid ground. Do not rely on the power connection ground. If you choose to not use the ground screw, make sure that there is a valid ground connection between the gateway and the grounded rack. Test the ground using an Ohm meter.

Note: Grounding wires, screws, and connectors for the ground are not supplied by Mellanox.

Configuring the Gateway for the First Time

1. Connect the host PC RS232 connector to the CONSOLE port of the gateway using the sup-plied cable.

Figure 9: Connect to the CONSOLE Interface

Note: No remote IP connection is available at this stage.

2. Configure a serial terminal program (for example, HyperTerminal, Minicom, or Tera Term) on your host PC with the settings described in Table 3.

3. Login (from serial terminal program) as admin and use admin as password. This starts the Mellanox configuration wizard.

4. Go through the Mellanox configuration wizard. Table 4 shows an example of a wizard ses-sion.

Resetting the Gateway

Should the gateway stop working, try resetting the gateway. On the connector side panel under the system LEDs is a reset button. This reset button requires a tool to be pressed, a paper clip will do.

Figure 11: Reset the Gateway

This button resets the gateway when the button is pushed. A quick push of this button resets the whole gateway. When the button is held down for 5 seconds the gateway is reset and the password is reset to the factory default password. The LEDs will flicker for a fraction of a second to indicate reset is occurring.
