RESEARCH TO CURE

Research is a fundamental part of the University Clinic of Navarre’s core. In close collaboration with other University of Na-varre centres and with the Applied Medi-cal Research Centre (CIMA), the Clinic is the centre that develops the most clinical trials in Spain.

This research has transformed the Clinic into an international benchmark in nu-merous highly specialised procedures. It is the only private centre in Spain to perform truly complex techniques such as liver and kidney transplants with live donors.

Its on-going research work is reflected in its systematic appearance in first-class in-ternational medical journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, among others.

SPORTS CHECK-UPS

SPORTS MEDICINE IN THE UNIVERSITY CLINIC OF NAVARRA

The Sports Medicine team of the University Clinic of Navarra consists of cardiologists who specialise in sports, others who are specialised in sports-related cardiac pathologies and have wide-ranging experience in the world of professional sport, pulmonologists, orthopaedic consultants, intern-ists, hepatologists, endocrinologists and micro-biologists, in order to obtain a multidisciplinary perspective on the patient. Each of the tests in-cluded in the Sports Check-ups is performed by the corresponding specialist, who work jointly to provide an overall vision of the sportsperson’s state of health.

By having all the consultants and technical re-sources in the same centre, the Clinic is coordi-nated and organised so that the patient can have a consultation, treatment and tests in one day and in a flexible manner.

SPORTS CHECK-UPS The Sports Check-up in the University Clinic of Navarra is a comprehensive and personalised ex-amination of the cardiovascular system and all the organs and structures that intervene in the perfor-mance of a sport.

Two procedures are applied, depending on the patient’s characteristics and habits:

Advanced Sports Check-up

The Advanced Sports Check-up is carried out by cardiologists who specialise in sports patholo-gies. They have extensive experience, gained over several years in contact with elite sportsmen and women.

THIS CHECK-UP INCLUDES:

• Cardiology consultation, complementing other tests that assess the functioning of the cardiovascular system at rest, and its adapta-tion and response to strenuous effort.

• Blood and urine sample, including a lipid profile, glucose, hepatic profile, renal profile, blood count, iron, ferritin, and urine (abnor-mal and sediment).

• Functional aerobic capacity, done with a mask for gas analysis, plus a spirometer test (car-ried out by pulmonologists and cardiologists)

to complete a cardiopulmonary stress test. The test can be done on a treadmill or a cyclo-ergometer, depending on the sportsperson’s preference.

• Electrocardiogram (ECG), to record the elec-trical activity of the heart and detect any pos-sible anomalies.

• Doppler ECG. To assess the functioning of the heart and see the size and diameter of its walls and valves, detect the presence of possible cardiopathologies or anomalies that contrain-dicate the performance of sports activity, and also to assess the heart’s response to aerobic exercise.

• Bioimpedance. To study the composition of the body, differentiating lean mass from fatty mass and body water.

• Morphometric examination, articulation and muscular balance, carried out by an ortho-paedic consultant.

• Tread analysis for runners.

Elite Sports Check-up

This check-up is aimed at people who practice sport at higher intensity, including elite sports professionals. To do this, the Elite Sports Check-up is specially designed to prevent the sudden death of a sportsperson as a result of pathologies such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, right ven-tricular dysplasia, anomalous coronary function or ischemic cardiopathology.

IN ADDITION TO THE TESTS IN THE ADVANCED CHECK-UP, IT INCLUDES:

• CAT heart scan, to detect coronary cardio-pathologies and anomalous origins of coro-nary heart disease.

• Cardiac Magnetic Resonance to reveal hy-pertrophic cardiomyopathy, right ventricular dysplasia or any other cardiomyopathy.

The Clinic also offers the possibility of mak-ing a special determination through a genetic “Cardioincode” test. By taking a small sample of saliva a number of coronary risk factors can be assessed genetically, and the impact of each of them on the sportsperson. This genetic study would be indicated for sportspersons over 35 years of age.

Below the age of 35, the Clinic offers elite sport-spersons the opportunity to undergo a genetic test to examine the probability of sudden death.

The Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery Service of the University Clinic of Navarra consists of consultants in different disciplines of this area of Medicine.

All the surgeons in the team are members of the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery (SECPRE) and have com-pleted their training in the USA, Canada, the UK, Japan and Brazil.

The University Clinic of Navarra has the latest technology for the surgical techniques in this spe-ciality. Laser, microsurgery, endoscopy, comput-erised operating theatre planning and the use of state-of-the-art biocompatible materials.

Dermoaesthetics

Like other organs, the skin needs specific care, particularly when it has been exposed to exter-nal agents.

Several treatments are now available to solve skin problems, most of them quick and efficient without the need for hospital admission.

However, before deciding which treatment to choose, it is essential to first have a check-up with a dermatologist to rule out any other prob-lems that are not purely cosmetic (e.g. skin can-cer or melanomas). Once these have been ruled out, the dermatologist will recommend the best course of treatment.

The Dermatology Department of the University Clinic of Navarra applies the most efficient and innovative treatments to improve the appear-ance of the skin. Most of them are very quick and do not require the hospital admission of the patient.

• Laser treatment to remove pigment lesions (spots, lentigos).

• Laser treatment to remove vascular lesions (couperose, dilated veins, spider veins, Port-wine stains, etc.

• Removal of tattoos by laser.

• Photodynamic therapy for rejuvenation or the removal of oncological lesions.

• Peelings for the treatment of photageing or acne.

• Infiltration of botulinum toxin (Botox) for the removal of wrinkles.

• Infiltration of hyaluronic acid to remove wrinkles of lip or for cheek filling.

Phlebology

The Vascular Department of the University Clinic of Navarra uses the most efficient and innovative treatments for varicose veins and chronic ulcers of the lower limbs.

These treatments produce very little dis-comfort and do not require hospital admis-sion. The patient returns home on the same day as the treatment, and results are seen very quickly. A few months later the prob-lems that had arisen around the varicose vein have been corrected.

• Phlebosclerosis with microfoam: A fine catheter is inserted and microfoam injected through it to fill the affected veins. The process is controlled by ultrasound at all times to monitor the flow of foam. The veins harden and finally disappear after a few sessions. Consultation and EcoDopplier included.

Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department of the Univer-sity Clinic of Navarra is equipped with the latest technology for the diagnosis and treatment of any ophthalmological problem. Its medical team is highly qualified and has extensive experience.

It is a pioneer in refractive surgery, with over 5,000 operations carried out using state-of- the-art laser equipment.

• Custom Lasik procedure: Test protocol and action to correct ocular pathologies using Lasik laser.

Therapeutic innovation is outstanding for the new application of medicinal oxygen in patients via mono-place chambers.

On 23rd November Oxien was inaugurated, the first Hyperbaric Medicine Centre in Navarre, backed by the Spanish Hyperbaric Medicine Soci-ety, integrated within the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine.

The medical centre is located in the Sannas build-ing in Nuevo Artica. Within its line of constant in-novation, the Sannas Group is expanding its medi-cal services.

Hyberbaric Medicine is a medical branch that deals with the physiological and physio-pathological changes that human beings suffer when subject to pressures that are higher than that of the atmos-phere, using medicinal oxygen which is dissolved into the plasma, thus achieving large amounts of oxygen in the blood.

This innovative therapy is complementary to the patient’s regular treatment. For this reason the

In the early 20th century there was a spa here that was known far and wide. At the time, its waters were described as coming “from the most strongly mineralised source in the world.”

The complex stands on an estate covering 55,000 square metres, where the source of mineral water behind the Elgorriaga spa and the latest project to renew it are found.

Three buildings, each with 25 rooms, provide ac-commodation for guests. There are also suites and rooms for small family groups. Great attention has been paid to access, with some rooms specially equipped for persons with mobility difficulties.

Near the three accommodation buildings is a fourth of more than 1,000 square metres. It con-tains the spa itself, and also consultation rooms, a bar, terraces and a restaurant with a variety of diets depending on people’s particular needs. The four buildings that make up the complex are linked together.

THE SPAThe most salty water

The water in Elgorriaga has a high content in miner-als; indeed, they are the mineral-medicinal waters with the highest concentration of salt in Europe. They are characterised by their high content in chlorine and sodium ions, with a concentration of around 189 and 179 grams per litre of water respectively. The wa-ters at Elgorriaga have a very high percentage of salt: 333 grams per litre of water. The first sensation you get when you enter the water is that you are floating. Indeed, the buoyance rate is higher than in the Dead Sea!

As for medical indications, thanks to their high min-eralisation these waters, rich in chlorine, sodium and iron, are recommended for degenerative and inflam-matory chronic rheumatisms, degenerative tendon lesions, neuralgias and side effects of traumas. They are also good for common colds, chronic rhinitis and sinusitis and are very beneficial for all skin problems. As for the circulatory system, they are recommended for early angio-neuropathies, and also to cure stress and fatigue.

THE TREATMENTS

The water emerges at a temperature between 140 and 170 degrees, and is then heated to 300-330. It has a strong salty taste but is odourless and colourless.

THE SPA HAS FOUR SWIMMING POOLS:

< In the active pool, the biggest one, with a circular shape and 400 square metres of surface area, the water is more diluted. It also has a large skylight that lets natural light in and allows you to contemplate the sky as you swim or relax in the pool.

< Contrast pool, saltier and colder.

< The Flotarium (buoyancy pool), in which the water has all the salt with which it emerges from the rock. We recommend a maximum of 15 minutes in this pool.

< The fourth pool is recreational, designed for the youngsters and also for doing exercises in the water.

Without doubt, it is the best and most efficient anti-stress treatment that exists. It is clear that the high levels of stress we suffer are the cause of illnesses, and sometimes even terminal processes.

The Romans occupied the area in 2 AD and prob-ably built this spa, as there are examples of thera-peutic artefacts in these waters from the era of Caesar Augustus.

Two springs emanate from the rock with flows of 1800 and 1080 litres/minute at 52°C. They are hyperthermal waters with an average level of min-eralisation that come from a depth of 1000-1500 metres.

The complex currently consists of the Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and the Virrey Palafox spas.

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES OF THE WATERS AT FITERO

The waters dissolve active ingredients that act on the body in dif-ferent ways. The penetration of these active ingredients is variable and depends on factors such as the way the water is applied, tem-perature, contact surface, and molecular state.

Sulphur neutralises toxins and is very beneficial for the collagen found in cartilage. Other elements in an ionic state, such as so-dium, potassium and a range of trace elements, act as catalysts of different enzymatic reactions that have an influence on a number of metabolic processes.

A notable element is radon, a noble gas with a rather short half-life that has anti-inflammatory effects and a sedative effect on the nervous system. It is best absorbed through the lungs, through the moistening of secretions, helping expectoration and cleansing of the lungs in illnesses where this is difficult or reduced.

Regardless of their composition, the waters at 52° give off heat, and this stimulates blood flow through the vasodilation of periph-eral parts of the body. The pressure from showers and jets acts on chronically inflamed areas and helps to repair tissue damage as well as producing a series of reflex actions (locally and at a dis-tance) that favour the cure of a range of muscular problems.

< BARDENAS REALES NATURE RESERVE

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this is a semi-desert landscape of 42,500 hectares that stuns and surprises with each new visit. A unique landscape to the south-east of Navarre, near Tudela, it is home to some in-credible natural features.

The erosion of its clay, gypsum and sandstone soils has sculpted whimsical shapes, creating an almost lunar landscape populated with ravines, flat plateaus and lonely hills. It has been a source of inspiration for painters and writers and used as a backdrop for televi-sion commercials, music videos and movies.

> THE IRATI FOREST

This is a medieval forest and the second largest and best preserved beech and fir forest in Eu-rope after Germany’s Black Forest. It is a huge green blanket of around 17,000 hectares that is still in an almost totally unspoilt state. Dense beech forests, pastures, spruce trees and fresh water paint a landscape of bright colours that is transformed with each new season and pro-vides the ideal setting for rambling, hiking and nature-watching.

> SEÑORÍO DE BERTIZ NATURE RESERVE

Located 49 km from Pamplona, this beautiful bo-tanical garden features some unique species such

as Chinese gingkos, sequoias from California, chestnut trees from the Balkans and water lilies... it is also home to some lovely wildlife

such as blackbirds, squirrels and woodpeckers, making it the ideal scenario for spending a quiet day feeling the heartbeat of the forest. All this is possible in the 2,040 hectares of lush vegetation, a green corner of great beauty in the Western Pyr-enees of Navarre on the banks of the Bidasoa River.

< URBASA-ANDÍA NATURE RESERVE

Millions of years ago the relief of a large plateau known as Zunbeltz or Lizarraga changed forever. A gigantic tectonic collapse occurred which led to the opening of a wide corridor between the familiar Sierras of Urbasa and Andía. Meadows and leafy beech woods alternate in this protected area of idyllic landscapes, whose southern edge drops sharply down to the Améscoas Valley, forming an impressive natural viewpoint over the cirque of the source of the River Urederra. You can discover all its secrets on a range of blazed hiking trails, spectacular viewpoints and different information centres.

THE LUMBIER GORGE AND THE ARBAIUN GORGE

These two gorges are very close together and share an Interpretation Centre in the town of Lumbier.

The Arbaiun Gorge is the largest and most impressive gorge in Navarre, with 6 km of stunning vertical walls where a large colony of griffon vultures nests, visible from the balcony overhang of the Iso viewpoint. It is a Nature Reserve and a Special Protection Area for Birds.

The unique feature of the Lumbier Gorge is that it can be traversed from inside thanks to a greenway that runs along the river Irati where in earlier times the first electric train in Spain used to run. Along its 1,300 metres you can watch the soaring flight of griffon vultures from the cliffs, enjoy views of the river whose rushing waters are still carving out the rock, and see the ruins of the bridge which, according to legend, was built with the help of the devil.

THE WAY OF ST. JAMES

TWO MAJOR ROUTES CROSS THE KINGDOM OF NAVARRE:

One entering from the Pyrenees via Luzaide/Valcarlos, going through the legendary Orreaga/Roncesvalles, and one from Aragon which passes through Sangüesa.

There are also two minor routes through the community: the Baztan way and the Ebro way.

The Way of St. James passing through Puente La Reina.

Currently the most well-known access of the French Way is the one that enters Navarre across the Pyrenees via Luzaide/Valcar-los. The route takes you from the Pyrenean landscapes of the north to the plains of the Middle Zone through beech forests, grain fields

and vineyards.

This itinerary abounds in little one-street villages, medieval bridges, great monuments,

landscapes that change

colour with each season, wineries and exceptional cuisine.

The Way of St. James is a religious, cultural and social phenomenon that was born in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, knights Tem-plar, monarchs, nobles, wizards, giants, princesses, magicians, the poor, knights and pilgrims from all of Christendom have travelled hundreds of kilometres to kneel before the tomb of the Apostle St. James the Elder, son of thunder.

THE KINGDOM OF GOOD FOOD Navarre offers visitors the flavours of yesteryear thanks to a culinary tradition which has been faithfully maintained: making a social event out of each meal.

Popular cuisine employs all the products provided by Navarre's varied landscape. Catering establishments have also achieved international renown thanks to the top quality of local raw ingredients. Navarrese chefs are among the most highly-reputed in nouvelle cuisine.

The Navarre Hotel and Catering Association organ-ises this unique event that celebrates pincho cul-ture in this region. More than 100 bars participate in this festival every year. It is held in various towns

across Navarre but the highest concentration is to be found in the capital, Pamplona. They create delicate, elaborate recipes that compete for one of the prizes —gold, silver, bronze— awarded by the jury panel to attest to the quality of the award-winning appetiser. In addition, the Navarre Food Quality Institute grants themed awards to 'pinchos' that include specific Navarrese products, such as asparagus, artichokes or beef.

This plane has a purchase price that is similar to conventional jets of the same capacity (3.9 million dollars) yet it has a much more competitive operating cost, making private aviation more affordable for users who need to optimise their time.
