Location and Access This route to Cap de Ses Salines begins at kilometre 5,2 of the MA 6100 road, which goes from Ses Salines to Santanyí. Due to its length, you may do this excursion by car until the road to the lighthouse ends. Yet, the regular stops and waits are essential if you want to observe the maximum number of bird species. Once you leave the car, you walk for 300 metres on foot, until you arrive at a stretch of coast which has a good view of the sea and the many seabirds that overfly it. Description of the Area The first part of the road goes through many farm lands, especially wheat and other cereal fields, and also through orchards. When approaching the lighthouse you may see more garrigues of wild olive trees and, finally, you arrive at a small but dense pine forest. Past the lighthouse the coastline is low and rocky, with some coves where you may easily plunge into sea if you feel like it. Ornithological Interests Plentiful, especially in autumn, when this area acts as a funnel that collects small migratory birds ready to leave for Africa. Fields are filled with small birds (stonechats, weatears, pipits, redstars, flycatchers, shrikes...) as well as partridges and stone curlews. The sky is occasionally frequented by booted eagles, falcons and other birds of prey and, over the sea, you may often see (in some periods of the year, quite frequently) balearic and Cory’s shearwaters, Audouin’s gulls or shags, to name the most common birds. Location and Access This almost circular route begins in Colònia de Sant Jordi, near the road which borders the salt pans of S’Avall. From there you should go towards playa del Cotó and once you reach the coast, keep going until you arrive at the port area of Colònia de Sant Jordi, where the proposed route ends. In all, you cover 4.100 metres of plain and coastal landscape, which is very suitable for families. Description of the Area This is a route that runs along an irregular, low and rocky coast, with several headlands and some small coves of crystal-clear water. Near the coast there are a few islets where numerous seabirds can be seen resting. At the beginning of the route you may see salt pans and piles of salt while, at the end, you may enjoy the presence of a large number of small boats moored in the port. Ornithological Interests Over the salt evaporations ponds, plovers, black-winged stilts and shelducks are frequently seen, and it will not be unusual to see some flamingos. Once you reach the coast, you should pay attention to Audouin’s gulls, shags, terns and even shearwaters that can fly far from the coast, driven by offshore winds. In winter and during the migration seasons, turnstones and other small shorebirds constantly patrol the wave splashed rocks. Location and Access This route is also linear and has a longitude of 9.300 metres (18,6 kilometres round trip). We advise you to leave your vehicle in Colònia de Sant Jordi, where you can have a drink before setting out on the proposed route, or recover your lost strength on your return with a delicious meal/ dinner beside the sea. Description of the Area This long coastal walk, well known and frequented by local people, is one of the most beautiful and varied ones you may do on the island of Majorca. Whether you want access to the beaches and solitary coves or if you only wish to enjoy the changing landscape, you cannot leave aside this route, which, like the previous one, passes through lands that are protected thanks to their enormous natural values. Points of Interest As soon as you leave Colònia de Sant Jordi, you will find beaches and sandy spots of great value like Es Dolç o Es Carbó. They won’t be the only ones, because if you persevere with your walk you will reach many places that are pretty and well loved like Cala En Tugores o Playa Es Caragol. The sight of numerous little costal islands, some of which maintain important archaeological findings (Na Guardis, Na Moltona...) will also be a gratifying reward for your efforts. In the coastal garrigues (type of Mediterranean forest) and scrublands you will discover butterflies of different colours, endemic warblers and stone curlews. Over the sea, the constant flight of seagulls will contribute to a feeling of peacefulness and calmness which, without any doubt, will stay with you during your excursion and will last in your memory for ever. The region of Ses Salines, known as Marina de Santanyí, is a flat land formed by sedimentary sandstones: the famous “piedras (stones) y mareses (sandstones) de Santanyí” so revered in the construction industry, as you may notice for the large number of disused quarries. Much older than the quarries are the talayots and other pre-historic elements (the vast majority still remain unexcavated), silent evidence of the first settlers. These important monuments abound throughout the area, some of them classified as points of cultural interest. Perhaps, the best well-known of all them is the settlement “el poblado d’ets Antigors” with its photogenic “Talaia Joana”. From the Carthaginian age we also find numerous remains, such as the settlement of the small island of Na Guardis, where dozens of people lived dedicating their lives to trade. More contemporary are the coastal watchtowers (to defend from pirate attacks) and barracks “de roter” (rectangular base) and “de curucull” (square base). All of them still used nowadays to house cattle. These are just a few of the large number of historical and ethnological elements treasured by this region: caves, windmills, towers, watchtowers, moats, fortified elevations, roman necropolis... without neglecting salt pans (some of them still working) which are amongst the oldest in the world and gave the name to the region. Location and Access This linear route extends for 12.500 metres, which can be approached both from Cala LLombards as well as from Cap de Ses Salines. You can choose the most convenient direction, but we strongly recommend walking with the sun on your back. This way, you can better contemplate the fabulous coastal landscape which you will always have in front of you. Description of the Area The route passes through a completely untouched zone of incredible beauty, which is nowadays protected at European level due to its variety of flora and fauna (wildlife). Also, its waters form part of a Marine Reserve where the ancient craft of fishing, such as pearly razorfish fishing, is still appreciated and where the diving produces strong emotions and unforgettable experiences. Points of Interest The coast is dotted with many coves “calas” and small inlets “calons” (Caló des Moro, Cala s’Almonia, Cala Figuereta, Cala Màrmols, Olla des Bastons, Racó de ca na Bàrbara…), headlands and small cliffs (Punta de Can Barragot, Punta de sa Cresta), caves and other geological and geographical accidents which continually surprise the visitor. You can also find, just beside the route, some saltwater shafts and megalithic structures of notable cultural interest. The lighthouse of Cap de Ses Salines hosts a coastal research station (one of a few in the whole of Spain) thanks to the agreement signed by the Port Authority and the CSIC in 2003. Native plants, sea birds and tortoises are other notable points of interest. Quite common in Spring and Summer and rare during the rest of the year. Audouin’s Gull This seagull is really a treasure of the Mediterranean Sea. It nests on little islands, where human presence is very scarce. Often forages for food behind fishing boats. Cory’s Shearwater It can be seen from March to October, usually at some distance from the coast. It approaches land only when breeding, which it does a lot in Cabrera National Park. Little Egret Elegant bird with long legs, neck and beak, that are used to pursue and chase its prey. You will always see it in wetlands and well-preserved stretches of coastline which have got plenty of small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Shag Spotted on well-preserved stretches of coastline, you will see it diving after small fish or drying its wings on a rock. Adults have a very characteristic tuft on the head. Turnstone Shorebird often seen on the rocky coast, alone or in small groups. It forages for food (small marine invertebrates that take refuge under rocks or seaweed) in the surf zone. Sardinian Warbler It is one of the most common species you may find in garrigues and pinewoods, where you may hear its distinctive call throughout the year. It can get two broods each year, usually formed by three or four young. MOST REPRESENTATIVE HISTORIC ELEMENTS Location and Access Contrary to the other routes, which are all pedestrian (except the one which goes to the Cabrera National Park, where you must take a boat), this one is meant to be done by bicycle. The minimum distance between Colònia de Sant Jordi and Cala LLombards is 16,2 kilometres. Yet, the route can be made much longer if you take one of the alternatives pointed out on the map, which go along secondary roads and in some cases, like the tourist-cycling route of Can Perets, are conveniently marked. Description of the Area Since this is basically an agricultural and livestock zone, almost all the areas surrounding the roads are dominated by this type of landscape. Dry farming - a type of farming without irrigating, for example cereal crops, carobs, almonds and fig trees - alternate here and there with fields of irrigated land and small woods and garrigues which make the landscape quite heterogeneous. Points of Interest The landscape, which has not changed from ancient times, gives an individual touch to the area. These are, in general, dry and harsh environments (this is the part of Majorca where it rains the least) but, on the other hand, you could be pleasantly surprised. Garrigues are full of rabbits and hares, stone curlews, tortoises and small orchids of amazing shapes and colours. Spread here and there on the territory you will find windmills, defence towers, caves, talayots and prehistoric remains, pieces of the historical and ethnological wealth which can be found throughout the marine of Santanyí. Best places to leave your vehicle are the town of Ses Covetes, the pay parking near the beach of Es Trenc and the town of Colònia de Sant Jordi. In any case, and even though there are some stretches of paved road, we strongly recommend walking for the duration of the route, so that you can idly contemplate many of the nooks and landscapes. Description of the Area The beach of Es Trenc is, without any doubt, the most interesting and well known untouched beach in all the island of Majorca. It boasts extensive dunes, well preserved marine grasslands and greenish-blue water. Behind the sand dunes stand out pinewoods and, behind these, the salt pans of Es Salobrar, which offer a fabulous visual and acoustic landscape, due to the great quantity of birds that gather there. Past Es Salobrar a completely new landscape is shown to the visitor and you enter the agricultural lands of Sa Barrala, where wheat and grazing pastures predominate. Ornithological Interests Really important. The area of Es Salobrar de Campos is, probably, where you may see the largest number of birds in all the south of Majorca. Salt pans and brackish ponds are an excellent shelter for a high quantity of shorebirds, ducks, flamingos, herons and small birds, especially in the migratory periods. You may also see ospreys, water rails and cormorants. In the lands of Sa Barrala live short-toed and thekla larks, kestrels, harriers and corn buntings. Finally, in the sandy pinewood of Es Trenc you may see warblers, tits, cuckoos, plovers and many other species which bird and nature lovers will, undoubtedly,be delighted by. Salt piles Kentish Plover It is common on beaches, salt pans and brackish ponds. When it has eggs or chicks and a predator comes closer, it has the curious habit of pretending to be hurt. Thus, it diverts its attention and so prevents the loss of the brood. In a land as beautiful and friendly as this one, the main recommendation is, simply, to enjoy it! Its beaches, coves, islands, ponds and salt pans, flora, fauna, landscape and monuments are available to anyone who appreciates its beauty and generosity, and understands how important it is to preserve it.
