Statement from the Director - Jaymes Camery

Guys and Girls Can’t Be Friends came from romantic struggles I saw and dealt with while growing up in Virginia. I

believe love is something everyone searches for. Handing your heart over at the wrong time will leave it to get shredded. It’s a

risk that can come with a huge reward, or leave you worse than before. That was my goal for this film. To show a genuine build

and heartbreak of a relationship, followed by the attempt to get it back. Nothing glammed up or softened, just people attempting

to find what makes them happy for the shortterm and longterm.

This is also a movie genuine to its setting. Virginia has a calm simplicity where time slows down and it claims to be the

land of lovers. Personally I can neither confirm or reject this statement but I have seen many fall for one another in front of a

backdrop of foliage and weaving mountains.

I am so extremely fortunate to have been able to get everyone off of my “wishlist” for this film. Not only did I get to work

with my best friends, who did more than I ever could have asked, but I worked with many new folks I admired and respected. I

had never met Eastward Films, who were our entire camera crew, but I had followed their work from a distance. Yes, I stalked

them on social media. I loved their look and camera fluidity. They were stationed in Maryland, which made it easy for us to get

them to Winchester. Stephen Tobolowsky and Clint Howard were such an honor to work with. Two actors that I have loved for

the longest time, agreed to come to Virginia and be part of our film. And it kept getting better. Will Stratton is one of my favorite

musicians. So many hours I’ve been driving around Los Angeles at night listening to his songs and thinking of story ideas and do

re-writes to his albums. When I first heard what he came up with for the film, I didn’t stop smiling for days. Finally our sound

design by This is Sound Design and Nathan Ruyle was top notch, really spectacular what he and his team did. I can’t list all the

friends, family, and community members that helped us out, but it took sacrifices and a lot of damn hard work to make this film

happen. And I’m proud of that.

Clint Howard was born in Burbank, California. His first role was as a toddler, playing Leon on The Andy Griffith Show, which

starred his brother, Ron, as Andy's son Opie. After guest appearances on several other shows including The Fugitive, Please

Don't Eat the Daisies, Bonanza and Star Trek, Clint landed his own CBS-TV series at the age of eight, playing the lead role of

Mark Wedloe in Gentle Ben, co-starring Dennis Weaver as his dad. Clint's real father, Rance Howard, also played a regular role

in the show as Henry Broomhauer. By 1974, his brother Ron had landed a lead role in another TV series called Happy Days,

and Clint made a couple of appearances during the ten-year run of the hit show.

Puberty didn't seem to slow Clint's career down as it did with most child stars. He made the transition to adult roles with guest

roles on shows such as Lou Grant and appearances in films directed by his brother such as Night Shift (1982), Splash (1984),

Cocoon (1985), Gung Ho (1986), Parenthood (1989), Backdraft (1991) and Apollo 13 (1995), but also in other films such as

The Rocketeer (1991), Carnosaur (1993), Forget Paris (1995), the title role in The Ice Cream Man (1995), Austin Powers:

International Man of Mystery (1997), The Waterboy (1998), My Dog Skip (2000), Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)

and The House of the Dead (2003).

Since his feature film debut at the age of six, Howard has appeared in over 75 movies. In 2002, he was awarded an MTV Movie

Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Emily Davenport

Emily Davenport was raised in Northern Michigan, went to high school at the Chicago Academy for the Arts, and quickly made

her way to California. She has had much success with television where she has appeared as a guest star on Grey's Anatomy,

Castle, and Master's of Sex. She loves making movies and was very excited to go on location in Virginia to film with such

awesome guys.
