New Program Designed to Enhance Campus Safety

SPOTLIGHTB-CU’s Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing Matt Knox shared with former Major League All-Star Gary Sheffield at the Bobby Bonds Memorial Symposium on Friday, July 29th in Orlando.

Knox and Sheffield took part in a panel discussion addressing issues that face youth in African American communities and discuss how baseball and education can be an integral part of the solution to these issues. Panelists included Dr. Keith Harrison, associate professor at the University of Central Florida and the author and principal investigator for the Black Coaches Association Hiring Report Card Study from 2003 to present, and Dr. Frederick Humphries, regent professor at Florida A&M University.

Sheffield played for eight major ball clubs during a career that saw him become the 25th player in MLB history to hit 500 home runs.

The symposium, named in honor of the late Bobby Bonds, was held at the International Palms Resort And Conference Center.

The B-CU Office of Safety and Security has a new program to enhance safety on campus. Members of the campus community and beyond may now submit an anonymous tip online. If you know of a crime or wish to report suspicious activity, you can submit information anonymously by completing and submitting the following form.

“We are hopeful that this new online anonymous tips link will be an effective investigative tool, that will help us maintain a safe and secure university community. We believe that it will play a vital role in helping our investigations by providing us with detailed information from anonymous sources,” said Chief Melvin Williams, director of the Office of Safety and Security. “Incoming tips will be received, via email, by campus safety administrators allowing for immediate evaluation and response to those tips.”

Cheryl Lawson-Young, B-CU’s crime prevention practitioner believes that by allowing these tips to be submitted anonymously, those who might otherwise withhold information will step forward.

“Perhaps the element of anonymity will motivate individuals to report suspicious or unusual activity, which might otherwise go unreported or be perceived as ‘snitching,’ ” she said. “The website even allows the user to answer questions about the type of crime, time, date and location, descriptions of suspects and individuals, and provide additional sources for information or contacts.”

Anyone who has information can submit online tips at www.cookman.edu/campuslife/studaffrs/security/crimetip.html.

The anonymous tips link is not to be used for reporting crimes in progress or emergencies and should not be used to file formal campus incidents or police reports. Immediate threats, such as a crime in progress or a person that is acting in a manner that is threatening to themselves or to others, should be reported right away to the Office of Safety and Security by calling extension 2900 from any campus telephone or 386-481-2900 from any telephone. Callers will not be required to provide their name.
