A simple philosophy pays twiceProvide only top quality products andservices and your customers will holdyou in high esteem. Based on thisphilosophy, Klüber has been manu-facturing special lubricants for almost70 years.
With 26 subsidiaries, 14 productionplants and more than 1,300 employeesworldwide, Klüber is your reliable part-ner in lubrication engineering.
Selected raw materials, highly qualifiedexperts, high-tech production facilitiesand stringent safety tests ensure theconsistent quality of our products.
To protect both people and nature, weoffer special lubricants with a long ser-vice life, high stability, and exceptionalenvironmental compatibility. The envi-ronmental award we received from theCity of Munich testifies to our successin this respect. The first company inMunich to pass the EC Eco Audit,Klüber actively pursues a global envi-ronmental management policy in line
with the ISO 9000 quality managementsystem.
Based on our long-standing experi-ence we are in a position to supportthe food-processing industry efficientlyin their due care towards the con-sumer.
The prompt technical consulting ser-vices we provide locally and our uni-form quality standards around theglobe are one of the many reasonswhy such sensitive sectors as thefood, pharmaceutical and tobaccoindustries, rely on Klüber.
Your total satisfaction is a challengewe’re confident to meet.
We would be pleased to send you our currentenvironmental statement on request.

Lubricants for the food-processing and pharma-ceutical industriesMore to the subject of food-grade lubricants
1 The term food-grade lubricant stands for lubricants used in the food, pharmaceutical andtobacco industries
2 Code of Federal Regulations
For decades Klüber has been develop-ing and manufacturing special lubri-cants tailored to suit the requirementsin the food-processing industry.
Food-grade lubricants1 have to:
• comply with food regulations• be physiologically inert• be without taste or smell
and• be internationally approved.
Furthermore, food-grade lubricantshave to meet general technical require-ments, i.e.
• reduce friction and wear• protect against corrosion• dissipate heat
and• have a sealing effect.
Depending on the operating conditionsand manufacturing processes in theindividual food-processing plant, food-grade lubricants have to ensure forexample
• resistance to food products• resistance to chemicals• resistance to water• neutral behaviour towards plastics
and elastomers• steam resistance• sugar dissolving properties• compatibility with rubber and seal-
ing materials.
The USDA (United States Departmentof Agriculture), an internationallyrenowned authority on consumer pro-tection in the food-processing industry, used to monitor compliance with perti-nent regulations in the past.
Before a product was registered by theUSDA as food-grade lubricant, themanufacturer had to prove that allingredients used in its formulation wereon the FDA (U.S. Food and DrugAdministration) list of allowable sub-stances in accordance with the Guide-lines of Security CFR 212, section178.3570.
4
Based on the specified raw materiallists, USDA registration was done intwo categories:
Food Grade Lubricant according to USDA H1:Suitable for an incidental, technicallyunavoidable contact with the foodproduct.
Special lubricant according to USDA H2:Suitable for use in the food-processingand pharmaceutical industries pro-vided that a contact with the foodproduct is absolutely impossible.
Since September 30, 1998, the USDAhas no longer been issuing registra-tions of food-grade lubricants.
What about already registered ornew products? Those registrations already granted will remain in effect. Now as before,USDA H1 and USDA H2 stand for thesuitability of products for use in thefood industry.
Being a reliable partner of our cus-tomers, we decided to continue toconform to the demands of USDA H1and H2 regulations. Klüber’s reputationand a certificate from our Board ofDirectors guarantee that our productsare in compliance with the establishedsafety criteria.
In addition, Klüber has established twocategories for modified and new prod-ucts for the food industry:
• Food-grade lubricants suitablefor applications where incidentalcontact with the product mayoccurManufacture (constituents, quantityand purity) conforming strictly toFDA 21 CFR § 178.3570(classification corresponding toformer USDA H1 registration)
• Special lubricants suitable forapplications in the food-process-ing industry with no direct con-tact between the lubricant andthe food product (classification corresponding toformer USDA H2 registration)
Confirms that the criteria for the former USDA H1 registration are met: the certificateof Klüber’s General Management for USDAH1 conforming lubricants

Klüber working for a common goal
Service and more
We consider it our responsibility as amarket leader in the food, beverageand related industries, to promote theintroduction of a uniform internationalsystem for lubricant registration. Forthat reason, we have teamed withvarious other lubricant companies, machine manufacturers and customersin the food-processing industry anddecided to apply for an internationalstandard (ISO) to be established forfood-grade lubricants.
For more details, please see ourbrochure USDA H1/H2 – Quo vadis?
All the lubricants we offer for the food-processing and pharmaceutical indus-tries have been developed and testedon the basis of our worldwide experi-ence and R&D work. They are eitherregistered acc. to or correspond withUSDA H1/H2.
In addition to a great many of USDAH1/H2-lubricants, Klüber also offers afull range of synthetic and mineral oil-free food-grade lubricants of highperformance.
All Klüber lubricants registered acc. toor corresponding with USDA H1 com-ply with the Geman law governing foodproducts and associated ancillaries(LMBG, § 5/1/1, as well as § 31/1).
Test results obtained on the Klüberworm gear test rig show that syntheticfood-grade lubricants outperform min-eral oil-based lubricants. For example, wear rates of synthetic food-grade oils
lie below those of a mineral oil. Due tothe better friction coefficient of our syn-thetic oils, the efficiency is higher andoil temperatures are lower. As a con-sequence, energy consumption isreduced and the oil service lifeincreased.
Klüber USDA H1 lubricants meethighest requirements also in terms ofhygiene and cleanliness. Their chemi-cal composition strongly impedes the propagation of microorganisms(bacteria, yeast, fungi). With less than100 CFU/g (colony-forming units) theyare 1000 times lower in germs thanspecified for food products.

Good water resistance and anticorrosion properties;free from metals; neutral towards alloyed steels. For use as lubricating and assembly paste for guiderails, hinges, rollers etc. Suitable as screw paste forhigh-alloy steels to improve the tightening torque andease disassembly after a long period of use.
Good high-temperature properties; good corrosionprotection; free of metals; neutral towards alloyedsteels. For use as assembly paste for bolts, pins, bushings etc. Lubricating paste for guide rails, hinges etc.
* Service temperatures are guide values which depend on the lubricant’s composition, the intended use and the application method. Depending on the mechano-dynamical loads, the time, the pressure and the temperature, lubricants change their consistency, apparent dynamic viscosity or viscosity resp. These changes in product characteristics may affect the function of a component.
** Speed factors are a function of the rolling bearing type, the bearing size as well as the operatingconditions to which the application point is exposed and therefore have to be confirmed by tests in each individual case.
