Everyonesitsdownandeatssacklunchestheybroughtfromhome.AfterLilyeats,shethrowshertrashawayinthetrashcan.Thenshehasafantasticidea!Shesaystheyshouldsplitintotwogroupsandgoonhikes.Theywilldrawpicturesofthingsinnaturethattheysee.Theywillhavefifteenminutestohikeandthenreturntothecampsite.Thenthetwogroupscancompareallthedifferentthingstheyhaveseen.Thefamilythinkstheplansoundslikefun.Theygetreadyandsetoffonthetwopaths. Justaftersheleavesthecampsitewithherdad,Lilyseesadeer!Itisthefirstwildanimalshehaseverseen.Lilyhurriedlysketchesitspictureinhernotebook. Fifteenminuteslater,thefamilymeetsbackatthecampsite.Theyshowtheirdrawingstoeachother.Lilylovesseeingwhateveryonedrew.Sheisalreadyenjoyingherfirstcampingtrip!

ThescientistshavelearnedthattheSouthPoleisthecoldestplaceonEarth.Eveninthesummerthetemperatureisbelowzerodegrees.ItissocoldthatmostscientistsonlyliveattheSouthPoleduringthewarmersummermonths.Veryfewstayfortheharshwinters.NooneelselivesattheSouthPole. WhilethescientistsareattheSouthPole,theyseesomeanimals,includingpenguinsandseals.Therearemanyfishinthewater,too.Inthesummer,somewhalescometotheSouthPole.Eventhewhalesleaveinthewinter.Itisjusttoocold. MostpeoplearesurprisedtolearnthattheSouthPoleisadryplace.Yes,thereisalotofsnowandice,butlittlenewsleetorsnowfallseachyear.TheSouthPoleislikeafrozendesert. PerhapsyouwouldliketoseetheSouthPoleforyourself.Ifyoutravelthere,youwillseeafewbuildingswherethescientistsworkandlive.Ofcourse,youwillseetheredandwhitepole,too.Otherthanthat,whenyoulookaround,youwillonlyseeflatlandcoveredwithsnowandice.

Lastsummer,manyofGavin’sfriendsjumpedoffthedivingboard.Gavinwatchedthem,butheknewhewasnotreadytojump.Instead,hepracticedhisswimmingstrokeswhiletheytookturnsjumpingoffthedivingboard.Thentheyallswamandplayedtogether. WhenGavinwokeupthismorning,heknewhewasreadytojumpoffthedivingboard.Hewaslookingforwardtoit.Hehoppedoutofbedandwenttothekitchentoeatsomeoatmeal. Justthen,Gavin’sunclecameintothekitchenforhiscoffee.HetoldGavintheycouldgotothepoolthatafternoon.WhenGavintoldhisunclethatheplannedtojumpoffthedivingboard,hisunclepattedhimontheshoulder.“Iknowyoucandoit,”hesaidencouragingly. Finallyitwastimetogotothepool.WhenGavinarrived,hisfriendswerealreadythere.Hesurprisedthembysayinghewasgoingtothedivingboard.Gavinwaitedinline.Hisfriendsstoodbehindhim.Whenitwashisturn,hewalkedouttotheedgeofthedivingboard.Hesawhisunclesmileathim.Heheardhisfriendssaying,“Youcandoit!”Gavincountedtothreeandjumpedintothewater.Heshotuptothesurfacewithahugesmileonhisface.Hecouldnotwaittojumpagain!

InsomeplacespeoplemakespecialNewYear’sbread.Whenthebreadisbeingmade,thebakerputsagoldcoininthedough.Thecoingetsmixedupinthebreaddoughandisbakedinsidethebread.Nooneknowswherethecoinis.Afterthebreadisbaked,itiscutintopieces.Itisluckytogetthepieceofbreadwiththecoin.Allofthepeoplechewcarefully.Theywonderwhotheluckypersonwillbe. InthecountryofDenmark,peoplesavetheirbrokendishesallyear.OnNewYear’sEve,theythrowthebrokendishesatfriends’doors.IfyouwakeuponthefirstdayoftheNewYearandfindalotofbrokendishes,youarehappy.Findingalotofdishesmeansyouhavemanyfriends. DadandCraigwenttothecountertorentskates.Thentheysatonabenchandlaceduptheirskates.Loudmusicplayed,andCraigsangalongwiththesong.Redandbluelightsflashed,callingtheskaterstothewoodenfloor. Together,DadandCraigstoodup.Craigwasabitshakyonfourwheels.Dadhadaneasiertimeskating,rememberingtheskatinghedidasaboy.Theybothmovedclosertotherinkandenteredthroughagate.Dadledtheway.Craighadahardtimeatfirst.Heclungtothewall,inchingslowlyaroundtherink.DaddidonelapandskateduptoCraig.HetookCraig’shandandledhimawayfromthewall.Soon,Craigfounditeasiertoskate.HeletgoofDad’shandandwasskatingonhisown.Craigsmiled.SkatingwithDadwasalotoffun.
