I am honoured to be the Principal of Trinity Beach State School - Tropical North Learning Academy for the first semester of 2020 and I am enjoying getting to know the school community. We have had a successful, positive start to the school year, despite the rainy weather. During classroom visits I have observed students focused on their learning and teaching staff committed to ensuring all students improve in their academic and social development. As I am walking around it has been wonderful to see the smiles of students and their parents and carers. It is a pleasure engaging in conversations with the school community who take the time to make introductions. Thank you for making me feel so welcome. Our School Purpose for 2020 is to provide quality learning environments in which everyone is safe and students improve in their academic and social development. I would like to acknowledge the work done previously by the school team and school leadership team led by Principal Mr Matthew Denzin to ensure that this focus in enacted in 2020. We will continue to build on a strong, professional learning culture during this year. Every class has reported high attendance and all students were in uniform, had the right equipment and were ready and eager to learn. Our recent Student Free Days set the scene for an exciting year ahead. We have a clear school wide focus on quality teaching and learning and setting the highest expectations of our staff and students. This fits perfectly into our school’s mission, ‘Engaging young minds to meet the challenges of the future by offering unique world class education programs from the early years to university and beyond’. Our Explicit Improvement Agenda identifies key strategic improvement priorities that we will work closely with our School Council on delivering to our school community, these include: • High Quality Pedagogical Practices • Precision in Curriculum Design and Delivery • Engaged Learners • Highly Reliable Teams • Community Partnership with a continued focus on Tropical North Learning Academy and our partnerships with parents, carers and the wider school community. Measures of Success Our measures of success in 2020 are: • Student Performance: Average grading across classes – 10% A, 30% B 50% C (levels of achievement in English and Mathematics) • Staff Capability: 90% of staff identify they have improved in their pedagogical practices • Team Efficacy: 90% of staff identify they are part of a highly reliable team It is timely to remind parents to ensure that their students arrive at school in the morning no earlier than 8.30am unless in a planned and supervised program. I realise that it is very exciting for kids to get back to school but it is also critical that we ensure their safety and wellbeing. We provide supervision from 8.30am and expect students to stay around the buildings and then move into class to get ready for the school day. (Continued over)

Parent Evenings: Tuesday 11th February

Unfortunately, there is no supervision before 8.30am and there is a legal responsibility for you to maintain the duty of care of your child until supervision is provided. There is before school care available at the ‘Outside School Hours Care’ program. Other families have shared arrangements between themselves to manage work commitments. In Week 3 (Tuesday afternoon) the teachers will be conducting ‘Parent Evenings’. This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and for us to meet you. At the evening you will find out about the routines, rules and expectations in your child’s class and get to meet some of the other students, parents and administration team.A huge thanks to the P&C for organising and running the book packs and uniform stall in the school hall. This is a great service and we appreciate the positive feedback.

Please note: This year the Newsletter will be produced fortnightly.

Imogen Stager

Principal, Trinity Beach State School – Tropical North Learning Academy

This is an opportunity to meet with the teacher, learn the specifics of how your child’s class operates and areas such as expectations, homework, exciting new programs and any special events happening throughout the year. It is also a great time to meet other parents and have questions answered about specific class functioning/programs. We look forward to seeing you there.

Important Updates and Reminders

Scholastic Book Club

Communication with the office regarding absences, late arrivals or early departures:

Students arriving late need to sign in at the office and obtain a late slip to give to their teacher. All students should be in class by 8.55am for roll marking at 9am. Students arriving after 9am are considered late. 9am is prime learning time, so try and give your child every opportunity to maximise their learning time by arriving before this time.

Early Departures and/or changes to travel/collection arrangements. If you require you child to leave school early or travel home via a different method than normal, please send a note to school for the teacher. Telephone messages received during the day are hard to pass on without disrupting not only your child’s learning, but the learning of others too.

• Be prepared in the morning and ensure these travel arrangement are made and shared with your child well in advance of the start of the school day.

• In the case of an unforeseen emergency, the school will of course do everything in its power to deliver a message to your child, however the school cannot guarantee telephone messages received after 2.30pm will be able to be passed onto students. Our office staff have many processes in place to locate students and classes within our school, but at times it can be difficult if given a short time frame.

For General Absences, the day your child is away, please phone the school Absence line on 4057 1444 and leave a message on the absence line. This is the most efficient method.

School Office Hours:

Please be reminded our school office hours are 8.15am to 3.45pm. Office doors will only be unlocked from 8.15am and will be closed at 3.45pm. We thank you for your understanding and support in allowing our dedicated office staff to work on many other important tasks.

My student is unwell or requires first aid:

Any student who is sick or injured must first get a note from their class teacher then go to sick bay located in the Administration building. If the student needs to be sent home because of illness, the office will ring parents to advise them. In the event of your student requiring expert medical attention, an ambulance will be called and your child will be taken to the hospital. Parent/Guardians will be contacted immediately.

Please be aware the school is unable to dispense any over the counter medication if your student is unwell. Prescription medication can be left at the office and parents must complete a “Request to administer Medication form” (available from the office), signed by a parent. All medicines require a valid pharmacy label which includes the name of the prescribing health practitioner to confirm that it is prescription medication.

QParents:

QParents is an online portal that provides a convenient new way for parents to communicate with their child’s school. As a parent, you can view your child’s student information and also submit changes to some of their details. The information that can be viewed includes report cards, attendance records, behaviour information and timely access to invoices and payment details. Parents will also be able to update their child’s details, pay invoices online, and let the school know of changes to normal routine, such as when their child is unwell or has to leave early.

For more information regarding QParents, please contact the school office or go to https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/about.

Invitations to register for QParents for our new families will be sent home within the next few weeks.

Scholastic Book Club catalogues are being sent home this week. If you wish to purchase any items, please use option 1 on the order form and place your order online via “The Loop”. Your order will be delivered to the school towards the end of term. All orders must be made by Monday 17th February.

Focus Clubs Term 1, 2020

During the Australia Day long weekend I competed in the Australian MuayThai Championships at the Gold Coast. This was my first experience at this tournament as I've only ever competed in local events. It's really hard to find girls in my weight/age division. Travelling for fights is definitely a cool thing too. Over the three days there was an opening ceremony, weigh ins and a lot of fights to watch.

For the first 2 days I got to enjoy cheering on my team and watching some awesome fights. I had such a great time, bonding with team mates who supported me the whole way through. I also had my parents and grandma by my side.

The best part about the weekend was winning my fight and becoming the Australian MuayThai Champion for my Division. I am looking forward to what will happen in the future and am already looking forward to going to defend my title at the end of the year.

How to manage parental stress and fatigue

What we know about parent fatigue In 2008, the Parenting Research Centre in Melbourne conducted a community-based survey* of over 1400 parents of young children (0-6 years). The survey found that over 70% of parents reported that tiredness gets in the way of them being the parent they want to be. High levels of fatigue were found to be associated with showing affection, anger and frustration, and lack of involvement in kids’ play and learning activities. High levels of fatigue were also associated with poor diet and exercise, ineffective coping strategies, lack of social support and poor sleep quality.

* http://www.parentingrc.org.au/index.php/impact-of-parental-fatigue-project-detail

Why did I let myself in for this? We’ve all been there…or if we haven’t, in all probability we will at some stage. The kids are being feral, the fridge is on the blink, restructure in the workplace is about to happen and the school is requesting an interview for Feral #2…again. No matter how well we plan our week, no matter how organised we think we are, no matter how much work and time we put into our parenting, Murphy’s Law says ‘if the trolley can go off the rails, it will’. And when it does, there’s usually great urgency to get it back on track.

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual and no two kids are the same. Put simply, this means that we’ve got to do the best we know how, but differently, for the sake of each child. Working full or part time whilst simultaneously running a family is a big ask, and the stressors can be huge and constant. We’re not robots nor are we super-human (even though our kids might think so). To keep the show on the road, we might need to expand our parenting toolbox and put some additional management strategies in place.

Ways to manage fatigue and stressCut some slack – nowhere is it written that we have to be perfect parents. Let’s get over the notion that we must somehow be infallible.

In the cartoon above, the parents are looking at themselves in the mirror. It’s not a pretty sight. Their stress, anxiety, and not wanting to face what they see, makes up the picture. When we look in the mirror, what do we see? Do we resemble these parents? Stress and fatigue go with the job of parenting, but enjoying our kids to the max will depend on how well we manage our tiredness and anxiety. Achieving a balance and restoring well-being may not be as tricky as we think…

POSITIVEParents & Children

Finally, seek advice if needed. Only we know our limits, and we’re usually the only one who knows when that limit has been reached. Professional advice is only a phone call away. We don’t ever need to feel guilty making the call.

Don’t do disempowered or defeated - it’s too easy to feel that we’re fast losing ground and that the situation is out of our control. Take one step at a time. If it’s a discipline issue, that’s led to other issues, then tackle discipline first for other solutions to follow.

Prioritise exercise – there’s no better way to improve your mood than to work out. Exercise is an effective diversion from stress and anxiety. Grab the dog and do that walk. Happy pets have a way of enhancing mental health.

Eat healthy – fast foods, take away, and packaged snacks are ‘sometimes’ foods. Fresh food and a balanced diet works wonders and is usually cheaper in the long run than packaged meals. Give the body the fuel it needs.

Support team –make a list of family, friends, neighbours…anyone we trust to be with our kids…so that when the plot looks like being comprehensively lost, we can call on someone on our team to step in and give us a much needed break. It may only be half an hour for a walk around the block, or an hour for a coffee, or even a date with ourselves, away from our partner.

Create calm –work towards positive interactions, family discussions, rules, boundaries, shared parental and domestic responsibilities, and a quiet retreat somewhere in the house where any family member can go for time out.

Do family – spend time together as a couple, or as a family. Watch a video, walk together, go shopping together, enjoy activities and interests either separately or together. Find that precious few hours to just chill. Try to keep the extracurricular activities to a minimum. Neither the kids nor us need to live in the car.

Parents and Fatigue

ParentingWorksResearch-based parenting articles

Been wondering why parenting drains your energy?

Well it seems you’re not alone. Researchers at the Parenting Research Centre in Melbourne, undertook an Australian community survey into parental fatigue and parenting practices during early childhood. A sample of 1276 Australian parents, of at least one child aged 0-5 years, completed the survey.

KEY FINDINGS

Fatigue is one of the most common health problems reported by parents of infants and young children.

The study found that higher parental fatigue, was associated with things like low parenting self-confidence as well as inadequate social support, poorer diet, poorer sleep quality and ineffective coping styles including self-blame and behaviour disengagement.

Supporting parents to manage fatigue has the potential to increase parenting skills and confidence.

TAKEAWAY

FROM PROFESSOR MICHAEL BERNARDUNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNEFOUNDER, YOU CAN DO IT! EDUCATION

Fatigue makes it that much harder to be a good parent.

Don’t ignore fatigue. Take steps to manage tiredness and stress.

Things you can do for yourself:

• Remind yourself you don’t have to be a perfect parent

• Exercise, eat healthy and get plenty of rest

• Enlist a support team to take the pressure off you

• Create calm within the family – find quiet retreats in the day, share responsibilities

• It’s okay to say “no” when too much is asked of you
