OAG, a leader in aviation in-telligence and a UBM Aviation brand, Dec. 13 released the OAG New Countries Report, which explores the crucial role air travel plays in the economic develop-ment and stability of newly inde-pendent countries and provides in-depth analyses of the five coun-tries that have gained indepen-dence since 2000: Timor-Leste, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and South Sudan.

The World Bank, in the most recent World Development Re-port, found that post-conflict countries take on average between 15 and 30 years to transition out of fragility and to build resilience. Since 1990, 34 new countries have been established, many as a result of the dissolution of the USSR and Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.

“The birth of a new nation brings with it many challenges, and air travel plays a crucial role in the development of the coun-try, facilitating economic growth through trade, international in-

vestment and tourism,” said Ma-rio Hardy, Vice President – Asia Pacific, UBM Aviation. “The ad-vancement of airports, airlines, air routes and other air travel es-sentials must be a major focus of investments, both by the countries themselves and the international investment community. Effective air travel is central to the sus-tained advancement of any coun-try, and without it, new countries simply cannot thrive in today’s global economy.”

Overall, the report concludes that the opportunities and de-mand for air travel are potentially significant in each of the new countries, and that “open skies” agreements are beginning to dis-mantle some of the regulations governing which carriers can fly on certain routes – thus creating a more competitive environment. However, developing a robust net-work requires investment, skills and ultimately a reason for people to travel and invest.

On Dec. 15, Van Nuys Airport became the staging area for the departure of approximately 100 dogs of all shapes and sizes that have gotten a holiday reprieve from a certain death sentence, and be transported via private aircrafts to safety and loving new families just in time for the holidays. The dogs arrived on the tarmac at in a spe-cially designed bus before being loaded into a Jet Prop and a Pilatus PC 12 aircrafts.

The people behind the “Wings of Rescue Holiday Airlift” are a co-alition of Los Angeles area individ-uals and groups including Wings of Rescue, S.T.A.R.T. (Shelter Trans-port Animal Rescue Team) and the IL Care branch of the Israeli Lead-ership Council.

These diverse groups have joined together to create a network dedi-cated to rescuing dogs destined for euthanasia in California’s shelters and flying them to new homes in states where demand for adoption exceeds the supply of available pets.

Wings of Rescue, founded by local resident and private pilot Ye-huda Netanel, is an all volunteer organization of pilots.

Netanel, himself an owner of six dogs, says that one day he came to the realization that “Every day, amazing dogs awake to their last,” and decided to use his resources to

do something about it. S.T.A.R.T. operates the specially

retrofitted bus that provides ground transport for the rescue effort.

Volunteer Steve Spiro said, “Our purpose for the transports is the possibility and hope that one day ... we will be out of business.”

By John Carter DanishThis evening the DART Board

awarded the design-build contract for the final leg of the Orange Line into DFW Airport’s Terminal A. In just three short years, on Dec 14, 2014, our vision of light rail carry-ing travelers in and out of Irving be-comes a reality.

This 5.2-mile extension of the Orange Line from Belt Line Station to DFW is an investment of over $149 million that is being funded locally. But it is worth noting that it may benefit from federal funds un-der the TIGER III program which are aimed at multi-modal transpor-tation projects.

In addition to its multi-modal nature (airport service, light rail and buses) what makes this a great proj-ect, as well as a strong candidate for securing a grant is that our commu-nity is in the unique position of hav-ing public transit infrastructure in place, while also having prime areas for Transit Oriented Development. Add to that our strong business, ed-ucation and medical resources and you realize that it may be time to reframe our vision for Irving.

What contributes to my excite-ment about our city is that common perceptions about what constitutes a livable community are changing. It used to be that the American

Dream was a home with a picket fence around a luxurious backyard with a barbeque pit. But that is not the case anymore.

Look at real estate listings and you will find “walkability” and tran-sit scores posted to show the non-car accessibility of properties. Being close to public transportation, is a selling point because of the savings it represents, as well as the connec-tivity to jobs, healthcare, education and entertainment.

Today’s 20- and 30-year olds are not automatically running out to buy cars. They have figured out that they can make wise living decisions that release them from the cost of a car, gas, insurance, maintenance, tolls, parking, as well as traffic headaches.

So how do we reframe our vi-sion? We do this by keeping in mind that DFW is the fourth largest met-ro market in the U.S. and that there are another 9 million people yet to come. We also must make sure we don’t limit our plans to what worked in the past. Instead, realize that the younger generation, combined with a huge population of empty nesters, means new perspectives of what a “home” should be.

Think higher density, low main-tenance communities, with com-mercial conveniences next door, all tied together via the public transit

system. In the Washington, DC area, forward-thinking urban de-signers are showcasing a 30-story multi-family structure with 600- to 800-square-foot apartment and condo units with commercial and retail on the ground floor and green spaces on the roof. Sound like Dis-ney World? Well maybe, but re-member the millennium generation that grew up with Mickey Mouse, is moving up the ranks of the work-force.

This coming year, when we start seeing DART’s familiar yellow trains coming through our commu-nity, we will see firsthand the flow of new patrons, employees, residents and tourists. And as shuttles con-nect passengers from the Orange Line to DFW International Air-port, even global travelers will have the option to jump onto the system to experience Irving and the rest the service area has to offer during long layovers.

I imagine groups of tourists pull-ing new suitcases full of Stetson hats and exotic boots back to the airport, all the while chatting excitedly about the great meal they just had in town. They may have to pay an extra fee for their added baggage, but the picture this paints for our commu-nity is one I like. And it is one that bodes well for our future.

Reframing DART’s Orange Line vision Delta, US Airways close deal to transfer flying rightsDelta Air Lines and US Airways announced Dec. 13 the closing of

their agreement to transfer takeoff and landing rights at New York’s La-Guardia and Washington D.C.’s Reagan National airports.

Under the agreement, Delta acquired 132 slot pairs at LaGuardia from US Airways and US Airways acquired from Delta 42 slot pairs at Reagan National, as well as the rights to operate additional daily service to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015. In addition, the airlines divested 16 slot pairs at LaGuardia and eight slot pairs at Reagan National to airlines with limited or no service at those airports. Source: Delta Air Lines

“Through Junior Achievement, we have a great opportunity to build on basic concepts and the steps students can take on their own to build a businesses,” Mitchell said. “Students who build businesses boost their control over their economy, which sends out the ripples that are changing the world they live in.

“Research shows that children pick up most of their spending habits before age 12. To lay that foundation begins with the basic building blocks for building and impacting their world through financial literacy, to workplace readiness and to the big E, en-trepreneurship. We need to be ever ready to remind kids that they can do whatever they want to do, no matter what gender, race, age, or ethnicity they are.”

The Association of Flight At-tendants-CWA (AFA) issued the following statement Dec. 16 after the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld the National Mediation Board’s (NMB) decision to stop assigning “no” votes to workers who do not participate in union elections:

“This decision confirms that the National Mediation Board has full and absolute authority to bring de-mocracy to union elections in their jurisdiction. We urge Congress to move forward with a clean, long-term reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“For too long, ideologues have

held up passage of this vital piece of legislation on the hope that they could strip aviation workers of their democratic right of free and fair union elections. Flight Attendants have been on the forefront of this important issue for months.

Sikorsky achieved another significant milestone in its helicopter program as the Federal Aviation Admin-istration recently certified the Pratt & Whitney Cana-da PW210S engines that will be installed in Sikorsky’s new S-76D™ helicopter. Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

The engine certification issued on Dec. 5 signifies that the PW210S engine meets the requirements of Part 21.29 of the FAA regulations. A Part 21.29 type certificate is required for products manufactured in a foreign country or jurisdiction with which the United

States has an agreement for the acceptance for import into the United States. This latest type certification fol-lows the issuance of a Type Certificate E-36 on the engines by Transport Canada on Oct. 14.

Pratt & Whitney Canada, also a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., has completed more than 10,000 hours of testing of the engine.

Sikorsky expects to receive European Aviation Safe-ty Agency validation of the Canadian Type Certificate in the coming months, Fox said.

Terrill was amongst thousands of volunteers who participated in Wreaths Across America Day, Dec. 10, in Arlington National Cem-etery, VA, honoring the many ser-vice members who never made it home. Volunteers arrived early in the morning, adorning each grave-site with a wreath.

“I am so thankful for a nation that supports freedom defenders and veterans the way we do,” said Terrill.

Participating had special mean-ing for Terrill who recalled his own experiences during his two deploy-ments to Iraq and the impact of los-ing soldiers in his battalion.

“The most difficult part is the fight against letting the emotions of anger, fear, frustration or guilt change you or your soldiers. We had to maintain a balance within ourselves in order to continue to go out and keep doing the mission,” he said.

The Girl with the Dragon TattooRated: R

The question rolling around in the back of many heads all year, in-cluding my own, was can Rooney Mara pull it off? Can she bring the same intensity to the character of Lisbeth Salander that Noomi Ra-

pace did in the original Swed-ish film; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The only way this Ameri-can version di-rected by David Fincher is going to succeed is if Rooney delivers. Luckily for all of us she does just that. The film as a whole has some faults but

you can’t blame that on Mara. The story revolves around a jour-

nalist, Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) hired by a wealthy indus-trialist (Christopher Plummer) to help solve the mysterious disap-pearance of a young woman that took place 40 years ago. Lisbeth

Salander (Rooney Mara) is a 24 year old computer hacker who has been a ward of the state since she was a teenager. Lisbeth is moody, eccentric, angry, and quite brilliant. Her own life is shadowed in mys-tery and to say she has suffered is an understatement. Blomkvist takes her on as an aid in his investigative journey. Together they begin to un-ravel clues that lead them to a dark world of family intrigue, secrets, and possibly murder.

Based on the novel by Stieg Larsson this version follows pretty close to the Swedish film except it has more familiar faces and no sub-titles. Hollywood understands its customers. Most want to watch a movie not read it. Thankfully they brought in Steven Zaillian to write the screenplay since his list of cre-dentials is as solid as any person in the biz. David Fincher as director was a grand choice too. This movie needed someone able to deliver the raw edge without it becoming sen-sationalized or gratuitous.

Craig has done little to brag about since 2006’s Casino Royale. This will be the very role needed to get him some accolades. He does a

near perfect job in this one. He is believable as the journalist on the brink of losing everything. His face conveys a lot of what Mikael would be feeling. With all these elements in place the success of the film rested squarely on the shoulders of Mara. Those who loved the Swed-ish films will accept nothing but perfection from her. Add to that the fans of the books and the expec-tations sky rocket. Rest assured that Mara gave it all in this performance and will more than likely get no-tice from Oscar ballots everywhere. Rapace won Sweden’s equivalent to our Oscar and the role needs that sort of commitment.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has it all. Riveting characters with layers of personality, well thought out mystery, action and scandal make this one that will grab you and hold you till the end. It is rated R for good reason; mainly brutal violent content including rape and torture, strong sexuality, graphic nudity, and language. This is an in-tense, adult film that is not made for your casual moviegoer. I cannot stress enough the visuals that will bombard you. Add to that the dark

REAL ESTATE

By Matt MungleSherlock Holmes: A Game of ShadowsRated: pG-13

The thing to love about the new Sherlock Holmes film is that it’s a whole lot like the first installment. Guy Ritchie uses what worked earlier to make Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows such a fun time at the theater. He didn’t try and reinvent the wheel, but instead he just let it roll. From the wit to the pace to the filming style; all the ele-ments are prevalent here. Love the first one? You will like this one even better. Not a fan of the earlier film? Then don’t expect to find atone-ment here.

This time around Holmes (Rob-ert Downey Jr.) is trying to pin evi-dence on Professor James Moriarty ( Jared Harris) in conjunction with

recent political crimes. Not an easy task since Moriarty could be one of the smartest and most worthy adversaries Holmes has faced. Dr. Watson ( Jude Law) gets thrown into the mix, even though he sim-ply wants to experience his honey moon and move on to a peaceful lifestyle. This version introduces other notable characters including a Gypsy fortune teller (Noomi Ra-pace), and Holmes’ brother Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry).

This film has loads of swagger. Downey does for Homes what Depp did for Sparrow; only on a more sophisticated and intellectual level. RDJ completely embodies the character and leaves nothing to chance. Holmes is so brilliant that he comes across as annoying and intrusive. Yet the character has enough likeability that you want to see more of him. Law is the perfect

balance partner with his delivery of Watson. His intellect is more sub-dued and refined. This pairing cre-ates one of the best on screen duos in generations. The film needs both equally to be successful. Though Holmes is the blazing fire, Watson is the necessary oxygen to make it all work correctly.

Ritchie again excels in bringing this film to life. His use of action sequences, whether fist fights or massive explosions, keeps the en-ergy high. Sometimes the edits and cuts are so fast your eyes nearly fall out of their sockets, but it is this sort of film style that elevates the Holmes series to more than just a detective thriller.

I gave the first film 5 out of 5 and would be amiss to give this one any less.

Riveting mystery rivals originaland depressing life that plagues Salander, and you have a film that many will find abrasive and too heavy to handle.

As a fan of the Swedish trilogy I can honestly say that they did this justice, and I can recommend it with little remorse. Yes they took a few liberties with characters and the big-gest issue I had was the final scene. But Fincher gave us warning, so at least he was up front with his deci-sion. I give it 4 out of 5 invasions of privacy. Not an easy film to make but they pulled it off with gusto.

Duo plan airport-type launches into space

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul G. Allen announced Dec. 13 that he and aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan have re-united to develop the next generation of space travel. Allen and Rutan, whose SpaceShipOne was the first privately-funded, manned rocket ship to fly be-yond earth’s atmosphere, are developing a revolutionary approach to space trans-portation: an air-launch system to provide orbital access to space with greater safety, cost-effectiveness and flexibility.

Allen’s new company, Stratolaunch Systems, will build a mobile launch sys-tem with three primary components:

A carrier aircraft, developed by Scaled Composites, the aircraft manufacturer and assembler founded by Rutan. It will be the largest aircraft ever flown.

A multi-stage booster, manufactured by Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Tech-nologies;

A state-of-the-art mating and integra-tion system allowing the carrier aircraft to safely carry a booster weighing up to 490,000 pounds. It will be built by Dynet-ics, a leader in aerospace engineering.

Stratolaunch Systems will bring air-port-like operations to the launch of commercial and government payloads and, eventually, human missions. Plans call for a first flight within five years. The air-launch-to-orbit system will mean lower costs, greater safety, and more flex-ibility and responsiveness than is pos-sible today with ground-based systems. Stratolaunch’s quick turnaround between launches will enable new orbital mis-sions as well as break the logjam of mis-sions queued up for launch facilities and a chance at space.

Rutan, who has joined Stratolaunch Systems as a board member, said he was thrilled to be back working with Allen.

“Paul and I pioneered private space travel with SpaceShipOne, which led to Virgin Galactic’s commercial suborbital SpaceShipTwo Program,” Rutan said. Now, we will have the opportunity to ex-tend that capability to orbit and beyond. Paul has proven himself a visionary with the will, commitment and courage to continue pushing the boundaries of space technology. We are well aware of the chal-lenges ahead, but we have put together an incredible research team that will draw inspiration from Paul’s vision.”

The Stratolaunch system will eventual-ly have the capability of launching people into low earth orbit.

My name, Mr. Bigs, describes me best. I am a big 4-year-old neutered male, with awesome long, black and brown hair. I was rescued from another shelter and brought to this wonderful place, but what I want more than anything is a home of my own with a loving family who will give me all the love and attention I deserve. I get along well with all pets and people. Please come make my wish come true, and I will shower you with a load of BIG love.

Looking for a friend? Here I am! I'm Dingo, and I'm about a year and a half old. I used to have a home, but my other family thought I needed a yard to run in. I think I need an active family to take me on long walks and teach me new tricks. I'm a sweet guy who gets along with kids and other dogs. I was housebroken when I came to the shelter, so I'll just need a little retraining at your house. Bring your family to meet me and take me home soon!
