How far would you go to help some-one in need? For several American Airlines (AA) Cargo managers the answer was - halfway around the world. As part of AA Cargo’s annual managers’ meeting, a team building exercise held in conjunction with Cleaning for a Reason brought more than 70 managers from all over the world and employees together to clean 35 homes for women battling cancer on Mar. 27.

n Theft: March 20, 2012 at 12:12 p.m. Via the telephone, the report-ing party stated she arrived from Fort Myers, FL to DFW Airport on 03/16/12. She exited the plane leaving her wallet on her seat.

On 03/17/12, she returned to DFW Airport and checked with AA Lost & Found. Employees stat-ed the wallet had not been turned into them, but they would call her if it was turned in. On 03/19/12, AA Lost & Found advised the wal-let was located and turned in. Af-ter claiming her wallet she noticed all of her US currency ($700) was missing. The currency was the only item missing out of her returned wallet.n Criminal Mischief: On March 20, 2012 at 5:20 p.m. Officers re-sponded to a report of a vehicle be-ing keyed in the employee parking area for E Z Rent A Car.

An employee for Enterprise Rent A Car explained she drove a 2008 Chevrolet Impala from Plano to DFW Airport Rental Car Fa-cility on 3-12-12. She parked the vehicle in what she believed to be Enterprise’s employee parking area for storage. When she returned, she realized she accidentally parked in EZ Rent A Car’s employee parking area.

She noticed the Impala had been keyed by an unknown indi-vidual. The vehicle sustained dam-age in the form of a deep scratch consistent of a key being dragged across the vehicle. The damage ex-tended from the front quarter panel through the doors, to the rear quar-ter panel on both sides. The keyed portion was deep and appeared to be down to the primer. She esti-mated the damage at $1500. Ms. Hughes also showed me a piece of paper left on the

A 5x7 piece of white paper was found on her windshield with the typed information “This lot is for EZ-Rent A Car employees only. If you park in here again your au-tomobile will be tow away at your own expense. Thanks EZRAC”.

The officer went to the EZ Rent A Car to ask the employees if they noticed any damage. When asked about the vehicle and one immedi-ately stated he noticed it was keyed. The officer noted that the employ-

ee’s hand was shaking when asked about the vehicle.

Based on training and experi-ence the officer concluded a per-son’s hands shaking can be an indi-cator of nervousness. The employee said he didn’t see anyone around the vehicle or notice when it was keyed. Due to the employee’s suspicious behavior, a Criminal History check was run, which returned positive.

Due to the location of this lot behind the rental car facility, and its unique location, the officer con-cluded it would not be easily locat-ed by the public, as only employees of Enterprise and EZ Rent A Car park there. n Public Intoxication: On March 26, 2012 at 8:25 p.m. Officers were dispatched to Terminal A, Gate 29. The suspect was cooperative and understood he had missed his connecting flight which resulted in him being rebooked from DFW to Norfolk, Virginia Beach on March 27. The suspect knew he was flying out from another terminal the next day but not which terminal. The suspect stated he would stay in the lounge area for the night, but then changed his mind and was booked into the Irving Super 8 by Ameri-can Airlines. Officers escorted The suspect towards his pick up point on the lower level. He was extreme-ly unsteady on his feet and reeked of the odor of alcoholic beverages. He also stumbled close to bags and people who moved out of his way.

When officers asked the sus-pect if he had anything to drink he stated no; then amended his answer to words to the effect of some here and there. He stumbled towards the roadway on at least one occa-sion and was unable to comprehend where his bus stop was. The sus-pect then walked into a wheelchair; catching his left foot on the wheel-chair’s foot rest. He continued walk-ing dragging the wheelchair until it came loose and appeared not to have noticed. He again stopped at the wrong bus stop and was unable to comprehend where he needed to wait.

Officers determined that in the suspect’s intoxicated state he was unable to safely reach his destina-tion. The suspect was then placed under arrest.

n Possession of Miscellaneous Sub-stance : On March 27, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. An officer was dispatched to possible DWI in progress in the 3500 block of North International. A red pickup was driving errati-cally in traffic and the driver may possibly be intoxicated. The officer located the vehicle as it was exiting to Terminal E.

While following the vehicle, the officer noted it struck the curb with its passenger side tires and then struck the opposite curb with its driver side tires while on the exit ramp. The driver did not maintain a single lane once the ramp had ex-panded to a total of two lanes.

The officer conducted a traf-fic stop on the Terminal E Loop Roadway. The officer did not note any odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person or coming from in-side of the vehicle. The driver ad-vised he had nothing to drink today. He stated he was taking medication for high blood pressure.

The driver said he was lost which was why his driving was erratic.

Based on my personal contact with the driver, the officer I did not believe he was intoxicated while operating his vehicle. The driver consented to search his vehicle. The officer located a brown plastic pill bottle (no information listed on it) between the driver and passenger seat in plain view. The officer ob-served four different types of pills in the bottle. The driver advised the pills belonged to other employees who had driven his truck. When asked the last time someone other than he had driven his truck, the driver stated approximately three months ago. The driver stated he didn’t know the pills were in the truck. He later stated he knew the pills were in the vehicle.

Using MDC to identify the pills while on scene, the officer identified them from Drug.com as Darvocet, Ambien, Clonazepam and Cym-balta. Each of these pills must be obtained by prescription.

Because the driver knew the pills were in his vehicle and did not have a prescription for any of them, he was placed under arrest for Posses-sion of Substance in Penalty Group 3 and Possession of Miscellaneous Substance.

Good Friday is a religious holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Je-sus Christ, the leading figure in the

Christian faith. Also known as Great Friday or Black Friday, this holiday is primarily observed by Christians, although it sometimes coincides with the Jewish Passover. On this day, Chris-tians honor Christ’s sacrifice, which is believed to have saved the souls of the faithful.

Significance of Good Friday!Observed on the Friday preceding Easter

Sunday, Good Friday is a crucial part of the Easter ritual, which commemorates the pas-sion, death and resurrection of Christ. This holiday precedes the apex of the Holy Week: the cel-ebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Saturday night.

Other Christian TraditionsOrthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday

through special services.Orthodox Christians also commemorate Jesus’ sac-

rifice on Good Friday, by reading specific Psalms and Gospels which recount the events leading up to the crucifixion of the Lord. In the Eastern tradition, Good Friday is a day of strict fasting, when Christians abstain from all food and drink for the entire day.

Protestant communities also celebrate Good Friday by holding special services on this day.

Hope you all have a Good Friday! “I’ll see you in the terminals!”

The meaning of Good Friday

More than one hundred em-ployees and volunteers at DFW International Airport bid farewell to the final departing U.S. military charter flight Mar. 30, bringing an end to eight years of scheduled rest and recuperation (R&R) flights at the Airport. The flight departed from DFW with a shower of af-fection water cannon salute from DFW Airport Department of Public Safety fire trucks. Following this final flight, the U.S. Army will close its Personnel Assistance Point at DFW Airport, which processed soldiers and worked with Airport-based volunteer groups over the past eight years.

“This is a bittersweet day for all

of us at DFW, because the R&R flights sparked one of the most re-markable periods in our Airport’s history, with thousands of volun-teers delivering an unbelievable outpouring of support for our men and women in uniform,” said Jeff Fegan, CEO of DFW Internation-al Airport. “We will miss having the opportunity to personally thank our soldiers at DFW, but we know it’s good news that the Army charter flights are being reduced, because it means fewer of our nation’s troops are in harm’s way.”

The USO facility at DFW Air-port will remain in operation serv-ing troops. DFW expects about 100,000 individual troops annually

will transit through the Airport on their travels between the United States and the Middle East.

The start of R&R charter flights at DFW for a trial run in late 2003 prompted a grass roots volunteer greeter program known as “Wel-come Home A Hero” to welcome each incoming soldier at DFW. That effort helped convince the Army to move the charter flights to DFW on a semi-permanent basis in 2004.

Over the life of the program, “Welcome Home A Hero” program volunteers greeted over 460,000 in-bound soldiers transiting through DFW on their way home.

themselves,” said Shannon Smith, one of five event co-producers. “We do this for everyone’s enjoyment. Not that many kids these days are involved with pinball. They are more interested in video games, so we want to do anything we can do to further pinball education. Our hope is to make pinball a little more popular, so hopefully it will last a little longer.

“We are at the mercy of our col-lectors who bring their own ma-chines, so we never know what the mix of games will be. We provide incentives for collectors to bring their machines including cash priz-es for the best machines.

“This year we have everything from 1930s pinball machines to the latest, brand new AC/DC pinball machine by Stern. On our floor right now, we have the first five ma-chines from the factory.”

Having traveled from Austin, Shannon MacAlpine had her hands full corralling her three children, 7, 6, and 4 years old, during the stim-ulus-filled festival.

“My husband is a huge pinball fanatic, and he has passed that on to them,” MacAlpine said. “Pinball is a lot of fun, and it is something we can do as a family.

“We go to our local pinball ar-cade about once a month and give them a lot of money, because the kids are really bad at it. My husband can play for two hours on two quar-ters, so they help make up for that. In an arcade, we can all be playing at once. The games are short, and they have short attention spans, so it works for us.”

Game collector Rusty Key proudly showed off his Spectrum IV to festival-goers.

“I started collecting pachinko

machines, the standup, Japanese pinball machines, because I couldn’t afford a standard pinball machine,” Key said. “My enjoyment comes from fixing machines that don’t work, and then watching others play them and enjoy the games. I have a bunch of machines today, and none of them worked when I bought them.

“The Spectra IV game by Valley took two years to fix, and it is fasci-nating for me to watch people play it. Valley is known for its pool ta-bles. In 1978, they decided to make pinball and arcade machines. They made two arcade machines and one pinball machine then realized they couldn’t make any money with the

table pinball machine that rotates from player to player. There was just over 2,000 of them made, we only know of about 15 still in ex-istence. As far as we know, this is the only working one, and we just got it working two days ago. For a ’78 machine, it looks so ’78 like the old Atari stuff, and that is what gets people’s attention at first. When they see it rotate, the expressions on their faces change, and they are just amazed. At that point, the curios-ity factor kicks in and they want to play it.”

“We had a speed cleaning class for those of us who haven’t done a lot of housecleaning. There is an aw-ful lot to know. We got all the ends and outs of how to clean. For ex-ample, start from the top and work your way down, work from left to right and never mix ammonia with bleach. And don’t put bleach on the granite tops, because it will stain.

“This is a really fun event for us that we get a lot out of. We know the person suffering from cancer whose home we are in today truly appreciates what we do. We are glad to help her and hope the very best for her.

“I now have a lot more respect for people who clean houses for a living,” he said.

Struggling with illness, Karen L tried to stay out of the way as an AA Cargo team cleaned her home.

“The good news is these people pop up at my house and want to scrub my toilets. The bad news is, oh my gosh, what are they going to see?” Karen said. “We all have a little territorial pride, and you don’t want to invite people into your house if it is not like you would want it to be. Certainly over the past six weeks, this is not how I have wanted my house to be.

“As we get high tech, we lose high touch. But these people are reaching out to touch the person. This renews my faith in people again. There are a lot of bad people out there, but there are a whole lot more good.

“Life’s too short. Remember to eat dessert first. I keep thinking of the women on the Titanic who gave

up dessert. Eat more chocolate,” she advised.

Hurrying to load cleaning sup-plies into a vehicle parked on a busy Dallas street, Carmen Taylor, Man-aging Director for AA Cargo’s Lat-in American Division, spoke about the event.

“I think these cleanings will be very much appreciated. These ladies are going through a lot of tough times. Several of them do not have the energy to keep their homes as well as they would like to keep them,” Taylor said.

Based in London, Tristan Koch, AA Cargo Sales Team Managing Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa, became instant friends with Mr. Bigglesworth, the family cat.

“It’s tiring. I got in 12 hours ago, but its good fun,” Koch said. “We are helping people who need help, so I couldn’t be more happy to be here.

“My favorite chore is the cat lit-ter. I have a cat at home, so I’m well used to it. Dealing with the animals is something I’m more than happy to help with.

“We often just see airports when we go to business meetings. It is actually nice to see a bit of real America. If I was to ask any-one what America looked like, they would say a road just like this filled with people and families just like these. It is nice to involve yourself with real people. Of course, busi-ness people are real people, but it is nice to get out of the corporate community for a while and see the sort of people who live here. It is a real privilege to be given the oppor-tunity to come do this. It is a really worthwhile thing, and I enjoy do-ing it.”

Cleaning for a Reason grew out of founder Debbie Sardone’s

cleaning service, Buckets and Bows Maid Service’s, policy of cleaning for women with cancer

“About 15 years ago we had a company policy where we would clean for women who had cancer if they called for a service but couldn’t afford it. We wouldn’t turn them away. We would just take them on and clean for free or at a huge dis-count,” Sardone explained.

“A few years ago, I realized I could turn this into a national non-profit and take it outside of my own backyard. In 2006, we started asking maid services all over the country to donate free cleanings to women battling cancer. We found it very easy to get cleaning compa-nies and cleaning business owners to agree.

“Today we are in almost all 50 states and 4 provinces of Canada, and we have recruited over 1,000 maid services. So far, we have helped over 10,000 women get their homes cleaned for free. The donations of free cleanings have amounted to about $2.6 million.

“Helping these women is ab-solutely wonderful. Some of the women we have helped have said it is the first time they have felt nor-mal in many months to have a clean home. It makes our employees feel great, because they feel like they have an opportunity to give back to others. It feels good to use your own business to help other people.

“You would think that people who are executives and who sit at a desk all day wouldn’t be able to pull up their sleeves, scrub and do an effective job. But we have some executives here today from Ameri-can Airlines who have rolled up their sleeves, and they are putting us professionals to shame. They are doing a great job, working hard and sweating,” she said.

“The economy has something to do with the increasing interest in home brewing. When people who enjoy craft beers, discover they can make their own beer, the way they like it for less money than it would cost to but an equivalent commer-cial beer, they are interested.

“A lot of home brewers learn to brew when they are in college, again for financial reasons. They can make the beer and then have it for their parties.

“I’ve been brewing since 1995. I blame it on my brother. He saw the home brew equipment in a store window, so he sent me a home brew kit for my birthday. Before that, I had never thought of brewing beer.

“I enjoy the creativity of brew-ing. It is like being a good chef. You take a recipe and develop or modify it to suit your tastes. If you like good beer, good food and you like to cook, then you are going to like to brew.”

A member of the High Plains Drafters Home Brew Club, Kevin Eggers’ long time interest in brew-ing led him to enter a beer in com-petition.

“When I was young, I wanted a Mr. Beer really badly,” Eggers said. “They were cheesy little brew kits, and I was never allowed to have one, because I was too young. I thought it was cool because it was like chemistry and mixing stuff to-gether to make something.

“When I was old enough, one of my friends and I went to a home brew shop. He said his uncle home brewed beer, so his uncle bought us our first kit. I don’t know where he got that kit from. I think he might have just had some stuff lying around and just gave it to us, and we’ve been doing it ever since.

“Our first batch was horrible. When you are fighting with yeast and other things, you have a lot of stuff against you. But practice makes perfect.

“During the room crawl, we get to taste a lot of commercial beers. Sam Adams had three hard ciders

that aren’t even out on the market yet. So we get to try stuff no one else gets to. That is just part of home brewing; you get to make whatever you want. Whatever you have on tap is your beer and no one else’s.”

Though this year was her first time to attend the brew-off, Karmien Bowman, an Associate Professor of Art for Tarrant County College, has handmade the event’s coveted stein awards for the second year in a row.

“There are 58 steins this year, and I made them all with some as-sistance from my daughter,” Bow-man said. “It takes about five to six hours a piece to make each one. I timed them. If you consider all the time I spent on each one, they are pretty special.

“This year the steins are green instead of the traditional green striped.

“The color is kind of a shocking new, mossy green. They look really good with the decals.

“Decals are applied as the last step in production kind of like set-ting a diamond in a ring. Because I decaled the names of all the beer categories on the steins, and I don’t know much about beer, I found it really fun to taste all the differ-ent beers last night. I found I like kolsch a whole lot. It has a very bal-anced flavor. I’ve just had a great time.”

‘Wrath’ makes for better film than original ‘Titans’Wrath of the TitansRated: pG-13

When Clash of the Titans released a few years ago, it left a bad taste in the mouths of many viewers. Horrible up conversion from 2D to 3D, a plot overran with medio-

cre moments, and more a fizzle than a sizzle when it came to action. So with the new Wrath of the Ti-tans you have to wonder if it is a repeat of the same errors or did they in fact learn from their mistakes. Luckily for us it is the lat-ter.

In this sequel, Zeus (Liam Neeson) is kid-napped by his son Ares (Édgar Ramírez) and his brother Hades (Ralph

Fiennes). Ares is all upset because Zeus has grown soft when it comes to Ares half-brother Perseus (Sam Worthington). Hades is still holding a grudge because of his ban-ishment. Seems even gods can’t overcome sibling rivalry. Perseus is content living as a human, raising his son, and making a liv-ing as a fisherman. But he finds he must join Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Agenor (Toby Kebbell) to not only save Zeus but the world as a whole. So together they journey to the underworld for one hell of an adventure.

This installment had everything that Clash didn’t; larger than life titans, wall to wall action, humorous sidekicks, and a 3D experience that will at times twist and turn your insides. They spend little time setting up unnecessary storylines and instead jump right into the action. From there on, it is one herculean battle after another.

The animators did a splendid job with the special effects and the creation of the mam-moth beasts. They are gnarly and disastrous. Also the creation of the labyrinth of the un-derworld is unique and visually captivating. It has elements of the worlds that Peter Jack-son created in the Lord of the Rings films. The 3D is subtle so you get lots of depth without a grainy finish. The entire film pops exactly where needed.

Wrath of the Titans is rated PG-13 for in-tense sequences of fantasy violence and ac-tion. I give it 4.5 out of 5 bearded warriors.

The Dutch company PAL-V has successfully concluded test flights of its flying car, PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle). During the past two weeks, several test flights were conducted. The vehicle flies in the air like a gyrocopter with lift generated by an auto-rotating rotor and forward speed produced by a foldable push propeller on the back. On the road it drives like a sports car. No new infrastructure is re-quired because it uses existing roads and airstrips.

Renowned institutes such as the Dutch National Aerospace Labo-ratory and Delft University are involved in the development. The driving prototype was fully tested in 2009 and now the flying-driving prototype made its first flights. The PAL-V complies with existing reg-ulations in all major markets, which means that the vehicle is allowed both in road traffic and in the air.

“We are very proud to announce this successful maiden flight of the PAL-V,” said Robert Dingemanse, co-founder of PAL-V. “We know there is a lot of interest for the

PAL-V. Prior to announcing these test flights, we were already ap-proached on a daily basis by poten-tial customers and dealers wanting to be part of this exciting project.”

A PAL-V offers the choice of flying like a plane or driving like a car. The flying range will be between 220 miles and 315 miles, depend-ing on the type and pay load. Driv-ing, a PAL-V will have a range of about 750 miles. It runs on gasoline and there will also be versions that use biodiesel or bio-ethanol. It can reach speeds of up to 110 miles/h both on land and in the air.

On the ground the aerodynamic, 3-wheeled vehicle combines the comfort of a car with the agility of a motorcycle thanks to its pat-

ented, cutting-edge, ‘tilting’ system. Driving, a PAL-V accelerates like a sports car.

Flying, a PAL-V is like a stan-dard gyrocopter. It is quieter than helicopters due to the slower rota-tion of the rotor. It takes off and lands with low speed, cannot stall, and is very easy to control. Obtain-ing a license requires only 20 to 30 hours of training.

Governments are already pre-paring for increasing traffic with Personal Air Vehicles like the PAL-V. In the US and in Europe govern-ment-funded programs are deter-mining the infrastructure of ‘digital freeways’ to provide safe corridors using GPS technology.
