The Dallas Arts District’s “Spring Break ‘til Midnight at the Nasher,” a massive block(s) party surrounding the DMA, Nasher, and the Crow Collection of Asian Art is just another step that District leaders and City Council members are taking in order to attract more people to the corner of Flora and Harwood to experience some of the art, culture and great food the Arts District has to offer.

‘til Midnight at the Nasher is a biannu-al event that spans the entire Arts District with all the museums open free to the public and many of the institutions hosting events throughout the evening. This year, the Nasher held a concert by local band Emerald City and a viewing of Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo,’ and the Crow Collection organized karaoke and Japanese beer tasting.

The party also extended into the streets, which had been closed off for a couple of blocks in order to accommodate the thou-sands of guests, boutique food trucks, and live entertainment spread in and around the museums.

If you’ve been to Dallas lately and enjoyed these boutique food trucks you have the ex-ecutive director of the Dallas Arts District, Veletta Lill to thank. In 2011 she helped pass legislations that not only allowed food

All of us would love for all things in our life to be perfect. What would you do right now if you knew that everything

today would turn out perfectly? What project would you start, what person would you talk to, what problem would you tackle if you could be assured of success? Is there anything you’re putting off because you’re afraid of failure? Is there anyone you’re avoiding because you’re afraid of what they would say or think?

There is no guarantee of success. But there is a guarantee that if you never go for it, you’ll never have it. And even in the failed attempts, you’ll learn and grow. You will never know the joys and pain of love if you never give or receive love.

There is no guarantee that other people will think

highly of all you say and do. But that’s their problem. Do you believe in the worth of your own pursuits? If so, then what could possibly prevent you from following them? If you’re looking for a sure thing, then here’s one – ev-erything you achieve will come only from the things you attempt.

In order to succeed, you must proceed. To-day is a great day to start.

I trust that as we start into the month of April, I want to encourage you to not be afraid to take a chance and tackle your problems so that they can be solved. You are always in our prayers. Take care and “I’ll see you in the ter-

minals!”For more information, visit www.dfwchapel.org.

Things to think aboutDallas/Fort Worth (DFW)

International Airport, opera-tor of the DFW Airport Foreign Trade Zone, and the Dubai Air-port Freezone Authority (DAFZ) signed a Memorandum of Under-standing on Mar. 18 which creates a framework for a collaborative alliance between the two organi-zations. The agreement was signed by Jeffrey P. Fegan, CEO of DFW Airport and Mohamed Ahmed Al Zarooni, president and direc-tor general of the Dubai Freezone Authority. H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chair-man of Dubai Airport Freezone, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and other senior officials from DAFZ and DFW witnessed the signing.

“As we celebrate this historic occasion, we look forward to working together to connect two of the world’s most successful free trade zones in Dallas/Fort Worth and Dubai,” said Fegan. “Both free trade zones are strategically

located with excellent operations providing outstanding service, fa-cilitating trade and commerce and providing easy access to hundreds of destinations through many dif-ferent airlines.”

The Memorandum formal-ized the establishment of a Free Trade Zone Alliance between the two trade zones, and outlined the exchange of expertise to benefit business and develop new oppor-tunities in the global markets.

“We are extremely privileged to sign this Free Trade Zone Memorandum with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport,” said Dr. Zarooni.

“American businesses are amongst the 10 most active companies in the Freezone and through increased bilateral rela-tions with DFW, and we hope to take advantage of the business op-portunities available in the DFW region.”

IPAD2. She immediately went out and reported it to unknown security personnel. She then had to board her flight

The victim contacted the RP so the IPAD2 could be tracked, and it was located on the Airport. DFW Airport police were contacted, but police units were unable to locate it. The IPAD2 was then turned off and the signal was lost.

The RP called again advising an IPAD2 had been turned back on and was pinging at an Irving ad-dress. She further stated that Irving PD was responding to assist her in recovering the property.

Irving PD ran a badge check to see if the listed owners of the prop-erty were badged and employed on the Airport.

One of the suspects was em-ployed as a cleaner with UMB Inc., a cleaning company at Terminal D.

Irving officers spoke with the suspect, recovered the IPAD2 and

released it to the RP.The suspect stated she found the

IPAD2 in the parking lot and took it home.n Public Intoxication: March 14 at 5:22 p.m. An officer noticed a white male staggering down the shoulder and into the lanes of eastbound traffic at 1700 North Airfield Drive. As vehicles would pass, I noted the white male would waive his arms and gesture as if he was trying to flag someone for help.

The suspect was standing in the road at the entrance to Founder’s Plaza and was attempting to get the attention of a vehicle parked at the stoplight.

The suspect was asked to step out of the road and to a safe area. He exhibited very poor balance and staggered as he walked.

The officer asked the suspect how he got to the airport. The sus-pect replied that he did not know he was at the airport. The suspect was wearing two hospital wrist

bands, on his right wrist, and had a small amount of dried blood on his right hand. The suspect advised he had checked himself out of al-cohol rehabilitation this morning in Oklahoma City.

While the two were speaking, a cab pulled behind the patrol ve-hicle. The cab driver advised he picked Mr. Decker up at restaurant on William D. Tate in Grapevine where the suspect had been denied further alcoholic beverage service by the bartender. The driver advised that the suspect became unruly in the cab and started jumping around in his seat and calling the driver names.

The suspect then jumped in the front seat and began banging on the passenger window. The driver pulled over to the shoulder to call the DFW Airport Police and the suspect jumped out of the cab and began walking away.

The suspect was under arrest for Public Intoxication.

By Phil CerroniThere is a group of people who from

their first appearance on the shores of North America have continually and un-apologetically caused a ruckus both here and abroad. I am not talking about cirque du Soleil but about Irish-Americans, one of the most wide-spread and most vocal Ethno-American groups.

Starting as competition for work and untrustworthy foreigners, Irish-Ameri-cans have won their place in American history through service both at home and abroad and, in the process, become an unforgettable part of culture in the United States

Each year, this becomes particularly apparent around Mar. 17 when green shamrocks are everywhere, and in some neighborhoods you take your life into your own hands if you are not appropri-ately attired come St. Patrick’s Day. But on Mar. 18 there will be little proof of the celebration the day before, aside from green refuse in the dumpsters.

While looking into this special brand of Americans, I stumbled across some on-line forums where this very ques-tion had been discussed, and the Irish sentiment was clear: Irish-Americans are not Irish. This got me thinking about the Irish-American phenomenon, and I began thinking that the habits of Irish-Americans are very similar to their Irish ancestors. For example, 1600 years ago

when the Irish kidnapped St. Patrick, they were pirates raiding the shores of England leaving as quickly as they came. This is not dissimilar to all those proud Irish-Americans (and everyone else) who sack local bars every Mar. 17 and are gone by two the next morning.

But what is the origin of the particu-lar animosity towards the descendents of one of the most famous migrations in history? In my own experience, at least, I have not encountered the same hostil-ity toward my own heritage. When I was spending time abroad I told a Sicilian confectioner that my grandmother’s can-noli was very similar to his, and he was delighted by the ethnic connection. We then spend a few minutes trying to figure out how close his home is to my family’s point of origin. This is not the only in-stance when I found Europeans glad to see Americans searching for their roots.

I think a lot of it comes down to pride, pride in being Irish whether full blooded or otherwise. There is also another rea-son perhaps that Irish-Americans love to reference their roots – the ethnic vacuum present in America. In every other coun-try in the world, culture and ethnicity are closely connected, but in America not only is there is no dominant ethnicity, everything being so mixed up, down, and every which way, but there is no distinc-tive culture either. Yes, there is American culture, but it is not a time-honored tra-

dition tracing back to kings, emperors, legions, etc. To find that kind of culture, most of us must cross the Atlantic. Every human being wants to know where he comes from, and for almost four hundred million of us, we can only find that to a point in our own country.

So whether or not Irish-Americans are Irish in the eyes of Irish law, their roots are in Ireland. The Yahoo post that read, “[When people say,] ‘I’m Irish too, my great-great-great grandfather is from there” - That doesn’t make you Irish, you have Irish ancestry, but you’re as Irish as Sushi,’” misses the point of why Irish-Americans are proud of their heri-tage.

True, there are responsibilities for claiming one’s culture as one Irishman posted on Yahoo Answers.

“From your question, it’s patently clear that you know bugger all about the heri-tage you so happily brag about.”

It is a valid point that you need to know your heritage if you are going to claim it. But to everyone out there who thinks that Americans pretend to be something we’re not when we’re talk-ing about our heritage, know what you’re criticizing, and realize that no matter how proud any of us are of being de-scended from the Irish or the Italians or the French, we are even more proud of being American, and when talking about our roots ‘American’ goes without saying.

Irish-Americans need love, tooAmbassador Profile

Extreme athlete parachutes from beyond Armstrong Line

Austria’s Felix Baumgartner jumped out of a space capsule from an altitude of approx. 21,800 meters (71,581 feet) falling at a speed of 364.4 mph as the Red Bull Stratos project advanced to the manned flight stage in New Mexico on Mar. 16. The height provided a genuine stratospheric experience beyond the Armstrong Line – the region be-ginning around 63,000ft where the atmospheric pressure is so low that bodily fluids start to ‘boil’ at the normal temperature of a human body.

At precisely 9:50 a.m. (US MT), Baumgartner landed with his parachute in the New Mexico desert nearly 40 kilometers away from Roswell, wearing a spacesuit. Just 1 hour and 40 minutes earlier the ex-treme athlete from Austria had lifted off from Roswell on board a space capsule attached to a 50 meter high helium balloon.

The normal ceiling for skydiving is less than 15,000 feet. The jump presented unique challenges including rapid acceleration and high speed while in freefall – Felix had to ensure he did not go into an un-controllable spin during freefall. Lack of oxygen – during the majority of the trajectory, the surrounding environment contained too little oxy-gen to sustain human life. Low pressure – without the pressurization provided by the capsule and suit, Felix may have experience life-threat-ening decompression sickness. Low temperatures – the temperatures Felix experienced in the stratosphere were as cold as anything he’s likely to encounter in his final jump: down to minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

Flight attendants visit UNICEF programs for children, families

The U.S. Fund for UNICEF and American Airlines employee volunteers recently returned from a trip to see first-hand UNICEF programs in the Dominican Re-public focusing on child survival, protection and development. UNI-CEF’s Change for Good program on American Airlines engages American’s employees – known as “Champions for Children” – who volunteer to collect contributions of foreign and domestic currency from customers to support UNI-CEF’s lifesaving programs around the world.

Champions for Children vote each year to choose which countries and initiatives will receive a portion of donations collected through the Change for Good program. For 2011, the Dominican Republic was the group’s chosen beneficiary country.

American Airlines flight atten-dants Andrea Hackim and Monika Kennel, based in Miami Interna-tional Airport, along with Evelyn Cordova and Adriann Raschdorf-Nelson, based in JFK International Airport, all Champions for Chil-dren, traveled toSanto Domingo, Boca Chica, Mamá Tingó, and Santiago to see UNICEF programs at work. The flight attendants vis-ited a local hospital in Santo Do-mingo to see programs focused on HIV/AIDS awareness and preven-tion as well as birth registration. They also learned about UNICEF’s programs that help strengthen lo-cal capacity to prevent and protect children from violence, exploita-tion, abuse and neglect.

Additionally, the group visited a UNICEF-supported childcare cen-ter that provides food, integrated education, early childhood stimu-lation, and psychosocial and recre-ational activities to children ages 45 days old to five years.

“Having collected donations for UNICEF’s Change for Good pro-gram on American Airlines for the last three years, it was truly reward-ing to see how UNICEF’s work is impacting the lives of children and families in the Dominican Repub-lic,” said Andrea Hackim.

Loadmasters of the New York Air National Guard’s 137th Air-lift Squadron, a component of the 105th Airlift Wing, teamed up with Wing Logistics Aerial Port personnel and members of the New York National Guard’s 2nd Weap-ons of Mass Destruction Civil Sup-port Team to train on the best ways to load the team’s vehicles into the C-17 Globemaster III cargo planes the squadron is now beginning to fly, Mar. 21.

The 2nd CST is composed of Army and Air National Guard members who are trained to iden-tify the presence of chemical, radio-logical, and biological agents using a variety of specialized equipment. Their missions requires the team, based at Stratton Air National Guard Base near Schenectady, to be able to deploy anywhere through-out the northeast on short no-tice on board Air National Guard transport airlift.

The 2nd CST and New York’s other weapons of mass destruc-tion responders have trained in the past to load their equipment into the C-5A aircraft the 137th Air-lift Squadron previously flew. The

Thursday exercise gave both the Air Guard loadmasters and the CST members an opportunity to learn the best ways to load the team’s equipment onto the C-17.

trucks into the district, but also gave them more flexible hours and more food options. These laws made it feasible for the trucks to branch out from the frozen-never-fresh foods they had been restricted to serving be-fore to gourmet grill food including sliders and fancy tacos.

Although the museums have been stay-ing open late for years, it is only the second year the District has thrown a block party.

“It is an inside-outside experience from the Arts District.” Lill said. “My goal liter-ally is community building. Build commu-nity in the district as well as in our buildings. You can look around and see the diversity in our crowd includes people from all walks of life.”

The block parties are not the only rea-son to come downtown. They also celebrate Chinese New Year and host a Third Friday Art Crawl, Art in October, and Aurora, a four and a half hour spectacle filled with lights, video projections, and sound.

The Arts District knows how to throw a party, and with all the other programming they have planned it looks as if the District is fast on its away to becoming a serious city center.

Aviation security spendingto reach $22 billion in 2012

The aviation security market has evolved in response to new threats faced by the aviation industry. The tragic events of Sep. 11, 2001 led to a necessity to re-examine existing airport secu-rity systems and technologies.

More than a decade on, new legislation has been adopted, regulatory authorities established and additional equipment installed at airport facilities throughout the world. As demand for air travel continues to grow year on year, governments and aviation enforcement authorities face the need to adopt strict safety measures that will counter terrorist threats before they occur whilst limiting the inconvenience faced by the passenger. Existing threats, rising passenger numbers and airport expan-sion projects mean that the global aviation security market will reach $22.3 billion in 2012.

The prevailing economic conditions faced by North Amer-ica and Europe have meant that projected sales forecasts are restrained However the impact of these economic constraints to the overall aviation security industry will be limited as in the longer term safety and security continue to remain a prior-ity. Upgrades to existing security features and investment in R&D will help to maintain steady growth in these markets.

Elsewhere, growth within Asian aviation security markets such as China and India is forecast by Visiongain to be sig-nificant, while in the longer term, Middle Eastern spending on aviation security is expected to increase sharply to meet the demand for new technology systems.

in Indian Wells, CA and Miami, FL, it is an excellent place to host a tournament where players on their way from California to Florida can stop off and compete.

“It makes it more convenient for the players,” Papp said. As a former ATP employee, Papp is well aware of what a venue needs in order to pull off a great tournament.

Besides being a natural stop in the ATP tour, The Dallas Classic, set up as a Challenger tournament (the second tier in the ATP tour circuit) is in a unique situation.

“There’s no way you can bring these marquee players to a tourna-ment without millions and millions of dollars,” Papp said.

Usually Challenger tournaments are not allowed to include top 50 players, but the Dallas Classic has a special arrangement. Technically, the tournament is a re-manifesta-tion of a now-defunct Challenger [event] formerly held in Sunrise, FL that was allowed to include these “marquee” players. This ar-rangement continued here in Dal-las making it the only Challenger tournament where fans can see some of the world’s 50 best tennis players compete (six top 50 players entered the tournament this year

The finals for men’s singles played Sunday afternoon was a bat-tle of titanic proportions with Igor Andreev, No. 98 in the world facing off against Frank Dancevic, No. 175. Dancevic played his way through the qualifying rounds, working his

way up from the bottom to be-come the first singles champion at the Dallas Tennis Classic, beating Dancevic 7-6(4), 6-3.

But this is not the first time Dancevic has taken the tennis world by storm. Last year, he be-came the first player to go from the qualifying rounds into the main draw in all four Grand Slam tour-naments in one year.

“Every time I played, I got five percent better,” Dancevic said try-ing to explain his Cinderella-story momentum. He also shared part of his strategy for beating the more imposing Andreev. “My goal today was to make the points quick … win as many free points as I could at the serve.” But he admitted that he did not waltz away with the tro-phy. “The baseline rally was a coin toss … a match like today came down to a couple of balls.”

The men’s doubles match ended very differently with No. 1 seed Gonzales/Lipsky defeating Rus-sell/Reynolds with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Although Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky do not usually play together, this is their third win in Dallas, and they will be partners

in the upcoming Sony Ericsson Open in Miami together.

“We are hoping for a good tour-nament in Miami,” Lipsky said, in-tending to turn the lessons learned from this tournament into a win at the larger ATP tour stop.

The tournament was such a run-away success that the ATP asked the tournament directors to con-sider hosting a first tier ATP tour-nament next year, either upgrad-ing the Challenger or hosting two events. This is especially surprising because the tournament was put to-gether in three months, an extreme-ly short time to organize an event this big. It was a monumental task that Papp deftly completed.

The players were as impressed with the event as ATP officials were.

“As a player I can honestly say it’s the best time I’ve played,” glowed newly crowned champion Dancevic.

Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne pledged the city’s continuing sup-port in the attempt to turn Irving into a major ATP destination. “We cannot wait to work with you as partners to get ready for this tour-nament next year.”

Even Exchange

Riveting story becomes newest blockbusterThe Hunger GamesRated: pG-13

Welcome to The Hunger Games. The odds are certainly in favor of them destroying the box office numbers. They have basically everything a film needs

to appeal to a wide range of audi-ences; even those who have never cracked the pages of the books. Soul stirring characters and a fu-turistic premise make it riveting. So let the games begin.

The story seems violent in theory; a yearly televised game where 24 teens battle to the death until only one remains victorious. Twelve oppressed districts have to offer up their young people as a way of paying tribute to the Capital for past rebellions. When Katniss Ever-

deen ( Jennifer Lawrence) steps up to take the place of her younger sister during “the reaping” she must use her hunting skills and the advice of her men-tor (Woody Harrelson) to survive. Also from her district is a young boy named Peeta Mellark ( Josh Hutcherson). Together they try to form alliances while showing the Capital that the games will not define them.

Audiences will appreciate the way the writers handle the violence and dark theme. This could have been an R-rated blood fest, but instead they keep the focus on the main thing; Katniss and her survival. The quick pans and edits keep the blood-shed to a minimum. The gaudiness of the Capital and its citizens is captured fairly well. Stanley Tucci is a wonderful Caesar Flickerman, but Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) needed even more flamboyance.

Now for what doesn’t quite work. There is a loss in the film of the undercurrent of sadness and de-pravity of the Districts. Whereas the book so per-fectly conveyed the raw emotion of some acts, you lose that on the screen without the solid back story. Though the film is good as a whole, some of the most potent moments go unnoticed.

The Hunger Games is rated PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images - all involving teens. Have your kids read the books? Then take them with no concern. Do they want to see it for the hype? Then you have to know your young person.

I give it 4 out of 5 tiny parachutes. The Hunger Games is action-packed, heart pounding, and re-demptive.

While the airlines may not be making money on food service, airport restaurants are: according to a sur-vey conducted by GO Airport Express, just 2 percent of travelers say they purchase food on the plane.

The company polled travelers nationwide; more than 400 people responded.

The number one response to the question on dining preferences when traveling, 55 percent of participants said they eat after going through security. Twenty six percent reported they don’t spend any money on food while going from point A to B; they eat before they leave or after they arrive at their destination. Eight percent responded that they bring their own food; four percent said they eat before they go through security and anoth-er four percent purchase food to eat while on the plane. Several others commented that time and circumstances dictate where and when they eat while traveling.

“Travelers are spending their spare time by taking advantage of the dining establishments offered post-se-curity,” says John McCarthy, president, GO Airport Ex-press. “Airports might benefit by increasing the number and types of restaurants to accommodate the many tastes and budgets of its flying customers.”

The majority of emergency incidents occurring in airports are related to drunk and aggressive pas-sengers, according to intermediate conclusions of the first in-depth study of European airports, conducted by the EU-funded BEMOSA Consortium.

The report, which is based on 360 interviews held at eight different European airports, found that major security actions taken by airport security employees

Southwest Airlines celebrates first Boeing 737-800 Southwest Airlines hosted a celebration for the arrival of the car-

rier’s very first Boeing 737-800 aircraft with an event at its Maintenance Hangar in Dallas on Mar. 21.

Employees and guests had their first opportunity to see the new aircraft as Southwest executives hosted a walk-through and tour. The airline took delivery of the new aircraft on Mar. 8 and the plane will un-dergo several regulatory and conformity procedures before it is entered into regularly scheduled service on April 11.

Southwest’s Chairman, President, and CEO Gary Kelly and Ex-ecutive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Van de Ven greeted those who gathered for their first glimpse of the new aircraft.

“Not only is this is a beautiful aircraft, and one our customers are sure to love, but it will also play an important strategic role in our future,” said Chief Operating Officer Mike Van de Ven. “It complements our existing fleet with opportunities for longer-haul flying and schedule flexibility by allowing additional capacity in high-demand, slot-controlled, or gate-restricted airports.”

Drunken passengers responsible for most emergency airport incidents

relate to confiscation of illegal items and dealing with unruly passengers.

Based on the interviews, researchers compiled a list of episodes representing different situations in which se-curity agents were required to take a decision and act. The report indicates that 131 of all 369 reported criti-cal incidents which represented a direct threat to safety stemmed from passengers carrying prohibited articles, including knives, guns and ammunition.

Ninety incidents involved unruly and disruptive people, mainly drunk passengers. These incidents caused major disruptions to security procedures as security per-sonnel reported they often needed help from co-workers or the police when facing drunken people.

“The results illustrate the complexity of actual behav-ior in airports. There is a definite need to improve secu-rity decision-making abilities as there is a gap between procedures and actual behavior when a threat is recog-nized,” said the Technion Israel’s Prof. Alan Kirschen-baum, BEMOSA’s initiator. “Security decisions tend to be inconsistent as employees regard most threats as false alarms, have never faced a real threat and have pre-biased estimates of what constitutes a threat.”

The report indicates that airport employees do not rely primarily on procedures or rules and more than one-third admitted they exceeded or bent the rules when the situation called for it. The interviews also revealed that employees’ concerns are not perceived to be terror related but are primarily passenger related.

Security critical for U.S. air travel growthAirlines for America (A4A) recently outlined recommendations

to the U.S. government for improving security and immigration as a way to boost travel and tourism to and withint he United States.

“We need to act promptly and decisively to make travel and tour-ism promotion a national priority without compromising security and safety,” said A4A Senior Vice President for Safety, Security and Operations Thomas L. Hendricks.

Domestic and international travel contributed $1.1 trillion to the U.S. economy in 2010 and was directly responsible for nearly 7.5 mil-lion American jobs. In 2011, 60 million international travelers visited the United States and spent an estimated $134 billion.

To facilitate and grow inbound travel and tourism, A4A urged the U.S. government to:

Speed the issuance of visas, particularly for high-growth countries such as Brazil, China and India, in addition to expanding the Visa Waiver Program to more countries where security assessments sup-port such expansion

Recognize, on a reciprocal basis, other countries’ trusted-travel-er entry programs that mirror the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry Program. Consideration also should be given to expanding trusted-traveler programs to specific categories of foreign passengers.

Improve the processing of passengers entering the United States, which requires more CBP staffing to accommodate growing inter-national travel, as well as modernize CBP information technology systems to better support passenger processing

Avoid diverting CBP staff from existing airports and overseas pre-clearance locations to land-border crossings or to open new pre-clearance locations. Diversion of these limited resources would delay the processing of air travelers arriving at the nation’s busiest airports.
