When the Dexter Daze commit-tee approached KatherineLarson about creating awhimsical visual encapsula-tion of the village in terms of

its landscape and physical structures, she felt compelled to create the Dexterin the Mitten poster that will be on saleduring Dexter Daze on Aug. 9-10.

The idea for her vibrant and colorfulillustration came to her many yearsago, during her first visit to the village, which reminded her of a miniaturetrain table. She has also created a simi-lar poster titled Ann Arbor and the Restof the World that has sold more than11,000 copies to date.

The wide, curved Main Street, clocktower and gazebo in the park invites

visitors to stop and see what might hap-pen perhaps a marching band couldcome down the street at any moment,Larson said.

Like Dexters illustration, Larsonssimilar illustration of Ann Arbor isdone in a similar style she plays withperspective to great effect to create adetailed zone in which a multitude ofindividual buildings and landmarks arelovingly and thoughtfully drawn aftereach is considered for inclusion in thepiece. Outside of the towns boundariesexist the rest of the state of Michigan inmuch more sparse detail and the GreatLakes beyond.

Larson is probably best known forher illustrations for the Ann ArborObserver, which she has collected intoa book called Ann Arbor Observed, in

DEXTER The VillageCar Wash and Laundryreopened its doors for the

community of Dexter andsurrounding areas recently.

Cheryl and Peter Caffrey, who have owned the business-es since 2005, invite locals toexperience the new car washand laundromat after it wasdemolished by the tornadoof 2012.

The Village Laundry has anew layout that is more acces-sible than the previous layout.Washing machines line thewalls of the building, ratherthan standing back to backin the middle of the building, making the space feel larger.

The extractor style wash-ing machines and dryers sur-vived the tornado in style and

    have been refurbished.Multiple 18-pound washers,

one 35-pound washer and one50-pound washer are avail-able.

Customers can use the 35-pound and 50-pound washersto wash comforters and blan-kets or just a very large loadof laundry. All washers arefront loaders and extractors, which means very little wateris left in the clothes for the

    dryers to remove.Additionally, several new

in-bay features enhance theVillage Car Wash, includingnew signs, booms and bayceilings. The five self-serve

bays, including one outsidebay for larger vehicles, allowcustomers to wash in com-fort.

Along with the mechani-cal room equipment beingrefurbished, the car wash isoutfitted with LED lights. Thenew lighting system providesmore light than the previoussystem, and it is also veryenergy efficient.

A new token system is inplace at the Village Car Wash.Fleets, businesses and othercustomers can purchase carwash tokens to use or give asgifts. To buy tokens, call thephone number on the coinmachine at the front of the

    car wash.Along with the new

improvements, the parkinglot has been repaved.

We are very appreciativeof customers returning tothe business and the encour-agement they have offered,Cheryl said. It has been avery long process going fromdestruction to reopening andtheir smiles and appreciationmake a world of difference.

    DEXTER Village offi-

cials once again looked atthe options that are on thetable for relocating the vil-lage offices from their cur-rent location at 8123 MainStreet.

If relocated, the villagespolice and fire facilities

could also move. Or, the citycould choose to move thefire station from 8140 MainStreet to a new location.

The word facilities hasbeen a bullet point on manymeeting agendas over thepast several years, as vil-lage officials have been say-ing that the space sharedwith a bank at 8123 Main isinadequate for the villages

staff and records storageneeds. A dedicated meetingspace is also a consider-ation, so village meetings

no longer have to take placein the Dexter Senior Center. After delving deeply in

the matter starting in 2008,the village decided to backoff of the facilities topicafter community outcrydue to the economic col-

lapse of 2008, until recently. The options on the table,

which are all based on aminimum 5,000 square feet

of office space, include: Renovating the fire

station at 8140 Main Streetinto village office spaceand relocating the firedepartment. This options$1,476,000 cost estimate anddoes not include the cost of

where the fire departmentwould go.Another option on 8140

    Main involves building a

side addition to the fire sta-tion building for $2,634,000,where village offices wouldbe located.A rear addition to 8140
