    Five dedicated studentsfrom Dexter High Schoolwill take their turn repre-senting their school dis-tricts science curriculumat the 15th annual NationalOcean Sciences Bowl.

    The students represent-ing Dexter are JorgenPowell, Angie Bach,Angelina Cicchella, ScoHarvey, and Aman-VirSingh Mandair. The kidsare coached by DHS teacherCheryl Wells, who is accus-

    tomed to excellence fromDexters science pupils.With more oceanogra-

    phers employed in the stateof Michigan than any otherstate, and some combinedmulti-state regions, theregional Great Lakes Bowl

    and the national bowl is abig feather in the cap of astudent who wants to findhis or herself gainfullyemployed in this growingsegment of the scientificcommunity.

    You have to be very wellinformed about currentocean issues, Wells saidwhen asked what it takes.

    In order to assure that abowl participant isnt outof their depth, a quicklyaccelerating schedule ofreview in biology, physics,chemistry, geology, geogra-phy, technology and marine

    law is required as prep,according to Wells who hasgone to nationals and wonseveral times.

    Dexter has beeninvolved in the bowl sincethe beginning, she said.

    Two dogs died in a fireSaturday night that dev-astated a Scio Townshipresidence on Marshall Road,west of Baker Road andnorth of I-94.

    Scio Township Fire Chief

    Carl Ferch said the threeresidents who lived in thehouse had just gone outwhen a neighbor across thestreet reported the fire atabout 6:28 p.m.

    Firefighters from ScioTownship, Dexter andChelsea responded to the7600 block of Marshall Roadand quickly brought thefire under control, he said.He said the fire affected allareas of the small cement-block house. Unfortunatelythe residents two dogs diedin the fire, he said.

    They were very fond oftheir pets, Ferch said. Thehome was for the most part

    a total loss. Thats devastat-ing.

    The fire is believed to havestarted in the kitchen, hesaid, but the specific cause iscurrently unknown. He saidthe residents who lived therereturned while firefighterswere extinguishing the fire.

    American Red Crossassisted them with lodging,Ferch said.

    Firefighters were on thescene for about three hours,he said.

    Dexters 2012 Relay forLife was officially kickedoff this month at theDexter District Library.

    Captains from nearlya dozen teams, spanningseveral dozen participantswho have already raised$7,208 as of Mondayconvened to experience apep talk with AmericanCancer Society officials.

    At last years event thisgroup raised $60,000, saidAlex Garnepudi, a com-munity engagement man-ager for ACS, who works

    with local organizers toput on successful Relaysacross the country.

    Garnepudi recalledprevious years whereweather was a challengefor Dexter Relays, butdespite those challengesand changing venue fromthe Dexter CommunitySchools campus betweenCornerstone and Wylie toMonument Park, Dextersorganizers have exceedyearly fundraising goalsand bested previous yearsfundraising milestonesconsistently year-to-year.

    Garnepudi said that hewas confident that Dexter

    would continue to do wellby ACS with this yearsRelay, with a little over 88days until the 2012 relaycommences on May 19 at9 a.m.

    Relay for Life kicks off

    was in attendance Fridayat the Dexter DistrictLibrary with his daughter,Emily, in support his wife,Michelle, who has stage 4metastatic breast cancer.

    Ive done eight relaystotal we have a lot of funat these relays and we lookforward to a lot of fun thisyear, Haywood said.

    Like many who come toRelay for Life, Haywoodand his family do well inseeking emotional supportfrom their local Relay com-munity, as well as a morale

    boost in the face of dealingwith a serious disease as afamily.

    Haywood has raised $110as an individual alreadyand says he has no inten-tions of letting up in hisindividual portion ofthe broader fight againstcancer.

    Local figure MarkOlexa, known best forbeing a central figure inDexters participationin the 5 Healthy Townsinitiative, was the speakerof hope during the event

    and rallied those gatheredaround the mantra of:This is going to be thebest year ever.

    Please raise your handsif you are a survivor know someone who hasdied from cancer someyou know who is a survi-vor, Olexa asked duringhis remarks, at the endof which everyone in theroom had their hands up,some very emotional at thedisplay of being united bycircumstances.
