To get the best bang for our buck, Liberty holds it's celebration the weekend after July 4th. The new starting time of 3pm seemed to work well for most everyone. The patriotic kid's parade that kicked things off was fun for both the kids and spectators. Old fashioned games and contests provided wholesome family fun. The music set the mood for dancing in the streets. Having two stages gave a continuous flow of music from the Castaways, the Royal Harmonizers, RPM band, Southern Storm and Keith Bartell. The activities, music and festivities were all concentrated closer to the highlight of the evening; the FIREWORKS! What a show it was! Day, Evening BLET Classes Begin Aug. 17 at RCC Students interested in earning a Basic Law Enforcement Training certificate have a chance to join Randolph Community College’s training program beginning in August. Both day and evening classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 17.  The daytime class runs from August through December 2015. The evening class runs from August 2015 through April 2016. Basic Law Enforcement Training is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise. This program utilizes state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.  Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission, to receive a certificate.  In addition to the general admissions requirements for curriculum programs at RCC, additional admissions criteria apply. Registration is going on now; interested students should contact Paul Goins, director of RCC’s Emergency Services Training Center and the BLET program, at 336-628-4552 or by email at [email protected].

Eastern Randolph Alumni RodeoThe Eastern Randolph High School FFA Alumni in cooperation with Jay Hinson and his Lucky J Rodeo Company and Arena is presenting their tenth annual Jeff Hinson Memorial North Carolina High School Rodeo. It will be held on May 3rd and May 4th at 7:00 pm at the Lucky J Arena on Hwy 64 East in Ram-seur. The arena is at the intersection of Hwy 64 and Shady Grove Road near Captain Tom’s Seafood Restaurant. The purpose of this event is to raise scholar-ship money for graduating FFA members and assist in sending FFA members to local, state, and national leadership con-ferences. This event is being governed by the N.C. High School Rodeo Associa-tion. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character in the youth of our state. They give high school students the opportu-nity to participate and compete in this unique and challenging sport. The NCHSRA offers a rodeo program that sets high school rodeo apart from the other varsity sports. The athletes compete on a scale comparable to collegiate and professional rodeo competitors. Contestants will compete in the following events: Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Breakaway Calf Roping, Cattle Cutting, Team Roping, Goat Tying, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping, & Steer Wrestling. There are over 40 local sponsors many of whom have sponsored all ten of the rodeo events. Wayne Thomas Chevrolet & Cadillac is the overall sponsor of this event. Other major sponors are Langley Grading of Staley, Harvest House of Ramseur, Swaim Heating and Air Conditioning of Climax, Randolph County Farm Bureau, Liberty Farm and Garden, Randolph County Livestock and Poultry Improvement Association, Carolina Stock-yards of Siler City, Randolph Telephone Company and James River Equipment of Asheboro. Food sales will start at 5:30 pm for participants and people attending the rodeo event. Tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the gate. Children 5 years and under get in free. Tick-ets can be bought at Eastern Randolph High School and the Wayne Thomas Dealership in Asheboro. This is a family event and we will have activities for young children each night. We will have local area students participating both nights as well as other high school stu-dents from across the state. For more information call Raymond Caviness at 919-742-3296 or 336-953-1424.

Liberty Rotary Reaches International AwardRotary International 2014-15 President Gary C.K. Huang has recognized the Rotary Club of Liberty with RI’s Significant Achievement Award. This international accolade is an acknowledgement of Liberty Rotary’s outstanding service project, the Rotary Farmer’s Market Shelters. This project transformed the small community’s Farmer’s Market from a space with rickety tables exposed to the elements into one where farmers and customers could conduct business in a safe space. All members of Liberty Rotary participated in the project – design, gaining approval from the Town Council, permitting, cost estimating, material procurements, and construction – making this a true club project, not just the efforts of a few. A local businessman was moved to contribute building materials to the project, and the Town Council was so impressed by the project that the Town added restrooms that now stand beside the new Shelters. These partners expanded the impact of the project. It is also worth noting that the club had a 100% retention rate throughout the 2014-15 Rotary year, reinforcing the notion that clubs that play (and build!) together, stay together. Congratulations to President Billy Hardin and all of the Liberty Rotary Club members for this prestigious award! - Storied Submitted By Patrick Eakes District Governor

Smokehouse Bistro ExpandsThe Smokehouse Bistro will be shutdown starting Aug 16 to approx Aug 24 for a remodeling and expansion process. Owner& Chef Mark shared with me, “ I just want to thank the community for the great support and turnout since the opening. I never expected such support and patronage. Due to their support we will be able to expand our kitchen size and be able to bring more great things to the menu. With our full service kitchen I believe people are going to enjoy all the new additions we plan on bringing to the menu. We even have special plans for unique seafood dishes.” One of my favorites is a their prime rib that has their own special sauce. So yes you can get awesome prime rib steak in Liberty. They also are adding a special events. They are renting a sound system and project to have their own Ladies Night on the patio with all day specials and that night at 8:45 showing Magic Mike movie that several ladies have asked for. Guys do not feel left out you can kick back at the bar and wait for your ladies after they have had them some quality time. I picked at Chef Mark and said all you need now is to get my Sheared Tuna, he chuckled and said it is already a future menu item. Oh yes I thought.

Moon And Star Watermelon ( Heritage) While on the way back from the vacation at the beach we stopped in at a vegetable stand that grows all their own produce. While there I was intrigued with the look of this unique watermelon that appeared to be diseased due to its yellow spots. Come to find out the gentleman told me it was almost a lost variety of melon that he grew from heirloom seeds he acquired. He mentioned that one elderly gentlemen remarked that is the melons my grandmother grew. We split the watermelon and it brought back a store house full of memories from my childhood. You see this water melon had a texture and taste unlike today melons. It had the huge thick seeds. It brought back memories of family gather under my grandmothers shade tree , sitting in the ribbon laced aluminum yard chairs and enjoying the fellowship and sweet watermelon together. In lieu of connecting through Facebook and Cellphone, we carried on conversations for hours. Well this led me to research this melon. This melon is actually making a come back, huge seeds and all. It is the Tennessee / Missouri Moon and Stars Watermelon, a large fruited melon whose dark green rind is speckled with tiny yellow dots (thats the start part) surrounding on or more larger yellow spots (thats the moon part). This pattern is not a disease but a gene of the plant. It is known for its sweet, old fashion sit on the stoop and spit the seed into the yard melon. The history of this melon is a short one, considered according to notes melons have been cultivated for 4,000 years. This melon was introduced in 1926 by Peter Henderson & Co. The melon disappeared from the commercial market for decades and was thought to be extinct, when in 1981, Kent Whealy, cofounder of Seed Savers Exchange, was contacted by Merle Doren of Macon, Mo, who was growing the melon and gave them some seeds. This heavy watermelon weighing from 20 to 50 pounds came back. I was told and facts back it up that these melons like very hot and sunny days to be just right. Well they have had this weather.

Cross Road VendingDon Herndon purchased Cross Road Vending in January 2002 from Ray and Carole O’Brien of Siler City. The O’Brien’s had built a successful business from the ground up as they placed gumball, candy, and toy machines in the local five county areas. Don and his wife, Judy began attending church with the O’Brien’s in early 2000’s, and it was there they learned Carole was suffering with cancer and Ray was looking for someone to take over part of the business.“It was a big step to refinance our home and take out savings to make the down payment. Ray financed it for me, and we started a great relationship, in both friendship and business. I left a sales manager position, a company car, salary, insurance…everything to go into business for myself. Judy and I really prayed and soul searched quite a bit before I made the jump.”The first few years were good, but in the mid 2000’s, the area was hit with mill, factory, and business closings. Mastercraft, Glendale Hosiery, Charles Craft and many other places closed or moved. Herndon had machines in all of these places and he depended on their volume to make payments. Then the banking collapse of late 2007 and early 2008 slammed into everyone. “I had to basically rebuild the whole business,” Herndon said. “The big accounts were gone, and I had machines running out of my ears at our home.” Don slowly started finding other places to locate his machines. “We had a good program to show folks with the scholarships that we give to local high school students. I have been doing eight to ten a year for thirteen years now. Even in the toughest years, we took a portion of the proceeds and set them aside for the students. We give out $1800-$2400 a year to high school seniors that are going to college. They usually range from $200-$300 each depending on how much is generated in sales in each county.”Unfortunately, Ray O’Brien died of cancer in September 2006, so Don lost his mentor and friend. “We talked on the cell phone a lot. He was the only person on earth that knew exactly where I was if I said I am at Bonlee Mills or Sports Endeavors. If I got down because of a place closing, he would encourage me to get out there and find another location.”Herndon currently services close to three hundred locations in the area. He finances scholarships in Alamance, Chatham, Lee, Orange and Randolph counties.Bulk vending is a labor intensive business. You have to physically service each machine, restock it and make sure it’s clean and working correctly. “I do all the bookkeeping ,ordering, sales and service. You get a good overview of other businesses when you have machines there. I have learned more about small business from talking to owners than in all my previous years as a salesman. I am in beauty salons, wood yards, restaurants, fire departments, medical centers; just about anywhere you have people in and out. I officiate high school football and lacrosse in the evenings because I can adapt my schedule to accommodate the games. I have been happier doing this type work than anything else I have done, plus you get to help out some kids with their college costs which is rewarding, too.”

Patterson Cottage Museum Corner -Brenda Heindl, Committee Member What would Home Depot have looked like in the early 1900s? If we could step back in time to the Gilliam Patterson Company of Liberty we might have an idea. The Gilliam Patterson Company was started in May of 1910. The building where it was is still standing in Liberty. It is where the American Aquascapes business is located downtown. Walter Temple Gilliam and George Armpstead Patterson were the owners. Walter’s wife, Beulah D. [Patterson] Gilliam was also listed as one of the incorporators. In 1914, in the Randolph Bulletin newspaper they advertised their goods, noting that they sold buggies, harness, wagons, mowing machines, plows, stoves, cultivators, fertilizers, and cement. The photo included with the article was taken in 1918 of downtown. The red arrow points to the Gilliam Patterson Company building. The Southern Hardware Journal of 1922 reported that the Foushe and Bray Company had taken over the business of Gilliam and Patterson because both owners of the company had died within the previous year. Stop by the Patterson Cottage Museum to see a great color advertisement from the Gilliam Patterson Company! We’re open Saturday, August 15 from 11:00-2:00!

Descendants GatheringThe names could have come out of a Randolph County phonebook: Aldred, Aldridge, Beck, Cheek, Cox Craven, fields, Latham, Lowe, Marley, Moffitt, Needham, Pugh, Routh, Spinks, and York.  But the names, still familiar today in Randolph County, appeared on a 1768 petition to then Governor William Tryon from a group of men who called themselves Regulators.  They were voicing their concerns over corrupt government officials and unfair taxation. Their ancestors are still here, along with thousands of others who probably aren’t aware of the connection.  On August 8 these descendants and anyone interested in the history of the War of the Regulation will meet at Alamance Battleground State Historic Site near Burlington, NC.  Guest are encouraged to exchange stories, share genealogy, and artifacts pertaining to the 1771 Battle of Alamance.  This event will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.Beginning at 10:00 a.m. Chris Laforet, producer and director of “The Regulators” documentary, will conduct a presentation on this feature-length movie which documents the Regulator Movement in Colonial North Carolina.  At 2:00 p.m. professor emeritus and author Dr. Carole Troxler from Elon University will take the podium and examine the issues of the Regulator Movement through her publication Farming Dissenters, The Regulator Movement in Piedmont North Carolina.  A question and answer session and book signing will follow. In addition, there will be exclusive behind the scenes tours of the Historic John and Rachel Allen House, a kid’s activity, and a memorial service. The Clapp family association will have food items for purchase.Alamance Battleground State Historic Site5803 South NC 62Burlington, NC  [email protected]

Eastern Randolph Girls Basketball 2015 – 2016 Fund Raising Campaign Welcome to the 2015 – 2016 Eastern Randolph Girls Basketball season. My name is William Flow, and I am the new Head Coach of your Eastern Randolph Wildcats. I am the excited about taking over the girls program and creating a new culture based on our core values or Commitment, Respect, and Toughness. Eastern Randolph basketball has a long tradition of excellence and we are looking forward to writing a new chapter in that history. The success of our program is due largely to the dedication of our players and coaching staff, as well as the support we receive from our community. The program cannot stand alone with just the funds we receive from our county budget. This year we are trying to bring in more funds, through fund-raising, to allow for an expansion of our program. We will recognize our valued supporters in the form of the Eastern Randolph Girls Basketball “Wildcat Club”. There are three levels of membership in the 2015 – 2016 “Wildcat Club”, based on your monetary contribution. Donations Break Down: $100 and above (Green and Gold Elite), $50 and above (Green and Gold) and $9 and below (Gold) . All Wildcat Club Members will have their names listed on the ERHS Girls Basketball web page. Our girls appreciate all donations received, regardless of the amount. Our program depends upon the Eastern Randolph community, family, and friends to support our season. We hope you will consider participating in this year’s fund-raising efforts. Sincerely, William Flow - Head Coach, Eastern Randolph Girls Basketball
