Introductionby

Samuel F. TurnerAssociate Hydraulic engineer

Geological SurveyUnited States .Department of the Interior

The purpose of this survey was to obtain information concerning exist-wells and the quantity .nd quality of water they yield* ana to put down testholes where additional information was needed.

This project was part of a statewide viiorks Progress Administrationproject known as a "Statewide Inventory of V.ells," sponsored by theState Board of Uat-er Engineers. The Division of Grouna water of the Geo-logical Survey, United States Department of the interior, cooperated in thetechnical direction of the project and the Bureau of Industrial Chemistry ofThe University of Texas furnished laboratory space and equipment and super-vised the chemical analyses.

The analyses were made by chemists employed on works Progress Adminis-tration Project 6507-5112 at Austin, xexas, sponsored by the State Board ofWater Engineers. Typists employed on this project typed and assembled thisrelease.

The field work in Dewitt County was started on April 1, 1937, and com-pleted July 13, 1937. This work was dona as Project 2081 of AdministrativeField Office 10 of the works Progress Administration, San Antonio, lexas,H. M. kapp, an engineer, was project superintendent. Mr. foapp should begiven credit for his interest in the work and for the many extra hours hespent on the project. The San Antonio office of the » korks Progress Adminis-tration made this work possible by their constant help and cooperation.

This release contains the well recoras and well logs obtained bj theproject superintendent, logs of the test holes drilled bj the fa.P.A. labor, and the chemical analyses of water Iromprivately-owned wells. .Locations ofall wells listed are shown on the map in the back.of the release.

The test wells were drilled b/ w.P.A. laoor using a soil auger, dropauger, churn drill, and & sanci bucket. Samples were collected at one-footIntervals by the well driller in charge of the part/. The project superin-tendent studied these samples and compiled the logs.
