the event possible, but she began by ac-knowledging the families.

“Thank you to the families. You give usa great day by allowing us to share thisday with you,” she said.

“It’s a joy to be here,” said Kelly. “It’sso rare for everyone in a courtroom to behappy.”

The first adoption of the day was fora young man from Bath who will turn 17soon. Anthony is now officially a Peters.

“We’re happy to finally end this,” saidLisa Peters, Anthony’s new mom, of the15-month process that lead them to theadoption.

“I’m happy that we can finally moveon and give him (Anthony) some stabil-ity,” said Joe Peters, Anthony’s new dad.

Anthony joins brothers Dyllan, 17; Daw-son, 14; Dakota, 7 and sister Skylar, 5.

The second family, the Beards, cele-

brated four adoptions.Lori Beard adopted her step children.

She is now the official mother of Paul,21, Tyler, 18, Katie, 13 and Cooper, 9. Andshe had three other children - Blake, 16,Kayden, 14 and Carly, 8. Together, Loriand her husband Jeremy Beard have sev-en kids.

“It’s been a really, really long road,”said Lori Beard. “These kids drive me ascrazy as my own, and they make me ashappy as my own.”

But after that light remark, she broughttears to many eyes with her next state-ment.

“I want you to know that you are notmy children because I married your dad,”she said. “You are my children because Ilove you.”

Judge Sullivan wrapped up the cere-mony with a very appropriate quote.

“Out of the hardest times the best hap-piness comes.”

Should your mailbox be hitby our equipment (as determined by road commissionstaff), you can be reimbursed up to a maximum of $40.The road commission does not replace a mailbox thatwas hit by snow. Please contact our office for additionalinformation.

WINTERMAINTENANCE POLICY

The Clinton County Road Commission’s goal is to providereasonably passable roadways as soon as possible afterinclement weather within the constraints of our resources, staffing, and budget. Our first priority is state trunklineroads (US-127, BR-127, I-69, and M-21. These roads aremaintained under contract with the Michigan Departmentof Transportation and are maintained utilizing theirguidelines. We use overtime as necessary to keep thembare when possible considering weather conditions. Our second priority is paved primary roads that connectthroughout the county. These roads will be maintainedby blading and using salt and sand. These roads willgenerally be maintained during the regular workdayand may sometimes be maintained utilizing overtimeon weekends and holidays depending on our resources.Unpaved county roads and paved subdivision streets areour third priority and will usually not be maintained untilthe first and second priority routes have been completed. These routes will be maintained by blading and usingsalt on hills, curves and intersections. These roads willgenerally be maintained during regular working hours.Due to budget cuts and attrition, we have fewer employeesthan last winter and some roads may not be maintaineduntil the third day after a major snowfall.

WINTER 2010-2011The Clinton County Road Commission would like to wishyou and yours best wishes in 2011. Please allow extratravel time as the weather dictates. Snow covered roadsare slippery. DRIVE SAFE &SHARE THE ROAD

Remember road safety begins with you-the driver. Keepthese tips in mind anytime you are at the wheel:• Stay alert• No cell phones while driving• Make sure your vehicle is in good

mechanical condition• Proper inflation and tread on tires. Also

watch wear on tires.• Adjust your driving habits according to

conditions of the road• Do not use the cruise control, allows for

better control on slippery spots• Stay at least 200 feet behind plow trucks• Prepare for plow trucks to back up at

intersections• Plan ahead for inclement weather• Make sure windows, headlights, and

taillights are clear of snow or dirt• Drive with headlights on low beam (not

parking lights) during rain, snow, and fog• Please exercise common sense and

courtesy at all times

WHEN PLOWINGYOURDRIVEWAYThe Clinton County Road Commission would appreciateyour help when clearing snow from your driveway. PublicAct 300 of 1949, as amended by Public Act 82 of 1978prohibits anyone from pushing or placing snow acrosscounty roads. Inevitably snow gets built up on theopposite shoulder and creates a hazard for our drivers andthe motoring public.

(If you place the snow from your driveway on the right-hand side when facing the road, our plow trucks won’tthrow as much snow back into your freshly cleaned driveas they plow the shoulders).

As of last week, police had been unable to locate thewoman or the truck. The case was turned over to the Clin-ton County Prosecutor’s Office.

Mark Darrow had gradu-ated from Caldwell. He wasan underprivileged teen whowouldn’t have imagined go-ing to an exclusive, privatecollege. In his junior yearof high school he was ap-proached after a footballgame by a Caldwell profes-sor, Lionel Farr. Farr recog-nized Mark’s abilities as aleader and understood thathe was someone with thewill to win. Mark was theson of an absent father anda mentally ill mother. He hadbeen unofficially adopted bythe family of his best friend,Steve Tillman.

Farr told Mark that if hecould bring his grades upto a decent level and con-tinue to excel at football, hewould see to it that Markreceived a scholarship toCaldwell College. The onlyfavor Mark asked for wasthat the same opportunitybe offered to Steve. The twoboys worked hard and in thefall of their college senioryear, they realized that theyhad accomplished so much. The world had opened withpossibilities. HIGHLAND, IN | Some things in life haveeasy solutions. Hungry? Eat. Tired? Sleep.

Bored? Gosh, who could be bored?! Lose

something? …Now that can be tougher.

Any kind of loss can cause frustration,

or regret, or pain. But some types of loss

impact our lives profoundly-- like the loss

of a loved one, the loss of your health,

or the loss of one of your senses- your

hearing, for instance.

With the holiday season approaching,

why not do something about that

loss? Consider it a holiday gift to

yourself. Imagine hearing your children,

grandchildren, or great grandchildren

without constantly asking them to repeat

something. Think about hearing the

sounds of the holidays again—the oven

timer when the cookies or turkey are

done, the carolers at the door, TV specials,

and don’t forget the wonderful sounds of

holiday music!

The fact is,

hearing loss can be

496*3D;C C> 6135& /85

average American

postpones seeking

help for up to 15years

16C5A *ABC =>C939=7 89B

or her hearing isn’t

quite what it once

was. Why? Well,

as anyone who has

made a study of loss

F9;; C5;; G>D% 45=91; 9B C85 *ABC 1=4 <>BC

applied “solution” to any problem of

B97=9*31=35& /> 13:=>F;5475 851A9=7

loss is to admit frailty, vulnerability…our

own mortality.

But it’s not only the individual with

851A9=7 496*3D;C95B F8> 655;B 1 ;>BB- F85=

you can’t hear, your family and friends

also feel a loss- a loss of communication,

a loss of a relationship. Effectively,

they’ve lost a loved one, they’ve lost you.

Companies that provide hearing aids-

-including mine--get excited about the

new technology and the great advances

we’re making in treating hearing loss.

And we advertise these products with

enthusiasm (like the new Invisible-In-the-

Canal hearing aid with advanced noise

reduction technology—very exciting!).

But the fact is, the best technology

money can buy won’t help if your hearing

loss is not accurately assessed and the

at AccuQuest Hearing Centers we’ve

made it a point to create an environment

that facilitates great care. We maintain

sound booths, audiometers, otoscopy

patients (and their loved-ones) can better

understand their hearing loss.

So how do you get the best help

available for your hearing loss? You look

for expertise. You look for hearing health

professionals with the best technology,

the best training, the best facilities, and

C85 25BC BD??>AC ?A>7A1<B G>D 31= *=4&

You look for a practitioner that has your

best interests at heart. You look for prices

that are competitive but not cheap. (Very

few people are standing in the $349.00

pacemaker line.)

Where health is concerned youmust use

good judgment to ensure you are matching

your hearing loss to the appropriate

hearing device. Purchasing a hearing

device because it is cheap or “I don’t need

a device that has the proper level of

reserve gain and extensive programming

capabilities is far more economical than

a unit that must be replaced every two

or three years. A patient may decide

to upgrade due to advance technology

but should not be forced to because the

hearing device simply will not meet their

need any longer.

We believe strongly in continuing

to seek the best training available, and

surrounding ourselves with a network of

top professionals from across the country.

Doctors of Audiology, Audiologists,

Audioprosthologists. Collectively we

have an enormous pool of best practices

that lead to extraordinary accuracy and

consistency. The effective treatment of

hearing loss demands nothing less.

At AccuQuest Hearing Centers our

purpose is in our name—we are on a quest

to make accurate hearing a reality for our

patients. Our facilities, our training, our

technology, and our extensive network of

expertise allow us to provide exactly that.

So this holiday season give yourself the

gift everyone on your list will love. Invest

in your ability to hear, you’ll be giving

your loved ones back something they

thought they had lost…you!

“They wore us down up front... we knewwe were going to have a tough time defen-sively with their size,” DeWitt head coachRob Zimmerman said. “It’s a different levelof kid ... but our kids did a great job.”

Senior quarterback Caleb Higbie com-pleted 21 passes for 221 yards and threetouchdowns and ran for 88 yards on 15rushes to lead the Panthers (11-2).

DeWitt fell behind early as St. Mary(11-2) junior Keith Stonestreet fielded apunt off a bounce over his shoulder, madea few Panthers miss, cut back across thefield and raced 58 yards for an Eaglet touch-down.

DeWitt responded after junior lineback-er Ethan Rennaker, who finished the gamewith 21 tackles, recovered a St. Mary fum-ble.

Senior running back Nathaniel Deaktook a shovel pass from Caleb Higbie up themiddle for an eight-yard touchdown to eventhe score.

The Eaglets countered with a score inthe second quarter, but the extra point wasblocked. Then, DeWitt took its only leadof the game when Caleb Higbie found hisbrother Jacob for a 14-yard touchdown passto put the Panthers up by a point.

St. Mary scored to take a 19-14 lead with27 seconds to go in the first half and out-scored DeWitt 22-6 after the break.

It put an end to a tremendous run for De-Witt. The Panthers lost 18 seniors last sea-son and put together another deep playoffrun after a loss to St. Johns to end the regu-lar season.

“We are so proud of them as a coachingstaff. To do what they did, not only to winthe league, but to win the district, regional, beat the very good teams in the playoffs toget to this point,” Zimmerman said. “It’s justa phenomenal season for these guys.”

Johnson hauled in 10 passes for 117yards and a touchdown for DeWitt, whichmade its seventh state semifinal appearancesince 2001.

Senior Corey Lucas, the younger cousinof Michigan State men’s basketball playerKalin Lucas, led the Eaglets with 106 yardsrushing and a TD.
