IPPA NEWS UPDATE

Campeonato España Nacional Individual SUB

16 Pitch and Putt in Deva Asturias

This year, this very special championship for our future top

players between five to sixteen year was changed from

Valencia excellent nine hole course to Deva in the north of

Spain and its outstanding eighteen hole course. From a

personal point of view I must say that this was one of the best

Pitch and Putt courses I have ever seen with fantastic greens

and extremely well maintained fairways, tees and bunkers.

The driving range had been converted to a nine holes course

with tiny greens for the smallest players Tournament: our

famous Peque Pitch & Putt Champ.

Proposed by the Chief Referee, and for the first time in our

Tournaments, we organised a Rules Clinic on Friday, The

three referees of the Championship showed to the kids

different situations they could face in the course and they

participated actively, interacting with many interesting

questions. Activities like these help the players to understand

and know the rules in a relaxed environment and improve the

wrong opinion of « policemen » some referees, unfortunately,

still have.

176 players - eight to sixteen years old - and 15 excited

children under 8 years was an incredible participation record

for this Tournament. (I think for any Tournament)

The

Director

of the

Tourname

nt was

Mila

Candela

who also

is the

President

of the

IPPA

Competiti

on

Committee. She, together with the President of Deva Golf

Pitch and Putt Club, Rosario Rubiera and assisted by more

than 20 voluntaries from the club and their tireless work, made

all

become

a

success.

The

voluntar

ies were

everywh

ere and

always

ready to

give a

hand.

Eventual

ly, they

were unanimously awarded with Panathlon Award for

"recognition of the sporting ideal and their cultural and moral

values as a tool to form the individual and seek solidarity

among people".

The whole Tournament is like a family “fiesta” where after

five years, many of the families have got to know each other.

A very friendly atmosphere where the players are friends and

the game is still for fun.

Many of the youngest players were playing a competition for

the first time so a patient voluntary was following each group

and guiding them through the whole game.

I may for sure be talking too much about these things, but I

cannot keep my emotions inside: what I have seen and

experienced over these three days is something very special.

The first tee time on Saturday was at 08.30 and the last one at

16.00, but no one minded. The weather conditions with a nice

and kind sun and 22ºC were perfect, hence all kids – and

parents – enjoyed a perfect day of golf... the results showed

how the players can improve their game taking fun of it! Even

the top players with plus-handicaps managed to score under

par!!!

Due to previous commitments for the RFEG President Mr.

Gonzaga Escauriaza, he could not make it to be present in the

Prize Ceremony. Instead, on his behalf, Mr. Alfredo Álvarez,

President of the FGPA thanked all for their great job and

specially the Club, represented by Ms. Rosario Rubiera for

their warm welcome and the efforts of all partners to host this

exciting tournament.

Up to a total of 23 Prizes - among champions, runner-ups,

Holes-in-one, poster Championship, Pitch & Putt « peques »,

etc. - were given by the members of the Competition Board

formed by Mr.Alfredo Álvarez, Mr. Jose Antonio Martínez de

las Heras, Mr. Pedro Pérez, Mr. Benigno Patallo, director of

Reale in Asturias, and the Chief Referee Mr. Miguel Angel

García.

I hope that all of IPPA members are able to organize similar

children tournaments, small or large.

Maybe one day IPPA can also organize a similar Tournament

with participants from all countries.

Probably the difficult part is to find the right time of the year,

safety and travel arrangements – let´s see what we can do in

the future.
