Attention: Media Membersand Opposing Schools

Since the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College in 1990, UDM athletic teams have found themselves referred to in many different forms.

In order to maintain consistency, we ask that the media continue to refer to us as UDM -- or use Detroit or Detroit Titans -- and eliminate the use of such abbreviations as U-D, U of D Mercy, Detroit Mercy, University of Detroit, etc.

When refering to Detroit women's intercollegiate athletic teams, please do not use the term "Lady Titans". All of our teams should be called the Titans.

Thank you for your cooperation and your continuing coverage of the Detroit Titans.

Men’s Tennis Coaching StaffGrant Asher begins his fourth year with the Titans and third as the head coach of the men’s tennis team after being hired in November of 2007 as the men’s leader. Asher was an assistant on the women’s team prior to working with the men.

In his three years as head coach, UDM has reached the Horizon League tournament each year. Under his direction, the Titans have claimed back-to-back HL Player of the Year honors with Pjotrs Necajevs taking the yearly honor in his two seasons in the Motor City. Asher also helped newcomer Cesar Escobar Serrano come in at mid-year to post a 6-1 league mark and earn second team All-League honors. He also saw Detroit get recognition from the Midwest coaches as his No. 1 doubles team of Ne-cajevs and Alex Latosinsky advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2009 ITA Midwest Regionals defeating the 12th-seeded Wiscon-sin tandem in the process.

In his first year, coach Asher quickly got to work recruiting the first men’s tennis team since 1995, forming a seven-man ros-ter. Working with five true freshmen and two transfer juniors, Asher led Detroit to a 5-13 record in the program’s first varsity campaign in 13 years. During the way, he helped mentor Pjotrs Necajevs to win five Horizon League Player of the Week honors as well as freshman Dustin Goldenberg take the weekly ac-colade once. Necajevs was ultimately named the conference’s Newcomer and Player of the Year after tallying a 25-4 singles, all at No. 1, including a perfect 7-0 mark in the league.

Asher teaches professionally at Franklin Athletic Club, the cur-rent indoor home for Titan tennis. He also spent seven seasons as head coach for Brother Rice High School in Birmingham. Prior to that, Asher had served as Director of Tennis at Court One Athletic Clubs in Okemos.

Asher played Number 1 singles and doubles for four years at Michigan State before graduating in 1992. He was named the team’s MVP for four consecutive years and earned the All-Big Ten Award. Following his collegiate playing days, Asher spent two years on the pro circuit, playing throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe.

The 42-year old Asher currently resides in Huntington Woods with his wife, Katie O’Connor, a senior attorney at Butzel Long in Detroit. The couple has seven-year-old twins, Colin and Payton.

One of the most highly decorated players in Horizon League his-tory returned to Detroit, this time as a coach as Pjotrs Necajevs was named a graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams for the 2010-11 campaign.

“Pjotrs was a great player for us, but it was not just about the re-sults he gave us on the court. He really helped our young players grow and get ready for the college game during his two years and to be able to keep him around is great for the program,” said men’s head coach Grant Asher.

Necajevs is involved in on-court coaching as well as providing assis-tance to both the men’s and women’s programs in regards to recruit-ing, practice schedules, travel coordination, budget and equipment purchases. He will also assist with day-to-day office administration

for both teams and help the Athletic Department in the areas of marketing and promotions, group ticket sales and assist with the department’s special events.

Necajevs ended his two-year Titan career as just the third player in Horizon League history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards after going 30-4 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in the confer-ence as a senior. He dominated conference play again with six of his seven wins in straight-set sweeps. In his Motor City career, he was 55-8 in singles, all from the top position, with a 14-0 record in conference meets.

He was the team MVP twice and earned the 2009 Titan Newcomer award at the annual UDM Presi-dent’s Athletic and Academic Honors Luncheon. Off the court, he was a member of Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), and earned academic honors by being named to the UDM Athletic Di-rector’s Honor Roll twice as well as to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll. As a senior, he also received the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes student-athletes who display ad-mirable conduct both on and off the courts.

Necajevs graduated from the University in May, 2010, with Bachelor’s Degree in Business and is currently enrolled in UDM’s MBA program.

In the four tournaments on Detroit’s fall slate, Alex Latosinsky went 8-6 overall in singles matches while Cesar Escobar Serrano and Pablo Nunez each totaled six wins. “I thought the fall went well. It was an oppor-tunity for us to establish who worked hard over the summer and who progressed and it gave our guys a chance to play and get mentally tough. I thought we performed well against some very stiff competition,” added Asher. At the last fall tournament in late October, the Wilson ITA Midwest Regional held at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, the doubles pairing of Chris Cheung and Nunez topped Michigan State 8-4 before falling in the bracket to Wisconsin’s Marek Michalicka, the overall No. 2 seed in singles play, and Petr Satral, 8-2. The Titan squad that went 8-12 overall last season, 2-5 in the Horizon League, graduated seniors Patrick Troy and Pjotrs Necajevs, but Necajevs did not get far as he joins both the men’s and women’s team as a graduate assis-tant coach. The addition of Necajevs to the staff will help nurture a men’s team that features just two up-perclassmen in juniors David Stabley and Nick Tolomei. This year’s squad features the two ju-niors as well as five sophomores and one fresh-man. “Pjotrs really helped our young players devel-op and get ready for the college game while he played here for two years and to be able to keep him around is great for the program,” said head men’s coach Grant Asher. New to this year’s Titan team are Larry Brown who attended Macomb Community College as a freshman, Nunez who attended East Carolina as a freshman, and true freshman Dean Butts.

“With a new program, we were fortunate enough to have two transfers in Patrick and Pete, but now those seniors have graduated so instantly we’re a young team again which gener-ally full time programs don’t run into. On the flip side, next year we won’t lose anybody and with another year of competition, these guys should be more mature and disciplined with their ap-proach,” commented Asher. The 2010 dual season saw the Titans enter the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 6 seed and earn a date with No. 3 seed Wright State that would see the Raiders advance on a 4-1 victory. Sophomores Serrano and Latosinsky went 11-5 and 7-10 respectively in last year’s dual season with Serrano recording a 6-1 mark in Horizon League play and earning conference second team honors. “We want eight number one players. We want everyone to feel like they are a top player for us. We certainly look to our upperclassmen Nick and David to take over at certain times but we tend to have a rule-by-committee philosophy,” said Asher.

The Titans will also be helped by midseason transfer Mike Basha from Western Michigan. Ba-sha will not compete until fall 2011. Basha was a three-star prospect and the No. 4 ranked senior in Michigan by TennisRecruiting.net out of Port Huron Northern High School in 2008. With a 32-6 record his senior year, he was a finalist for the prestigious “Mr. Tennis” award given to a top Number One Senior Singles player in Michigan as awarded by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association in addition to being named to the Division 1 All-State first team. Basha advanced to the Division 1 state finals in No. 1 singles each of his final three years making the semifinals as a senior, the quarterfi-nals as a junior and the round of 16 as a sopho-more. He was also named the Port Huron Times Herald Player of the Year three times. “We’ll get him for two years of competition and I think he is going to push us a step further not only going for a championship, but just the character of our program which is really impor-tant,” stated Asher.

2009-10 Season Review Overall, UDM finished the year at 8-12, 2-5 in league play, an improvement from its 5-13, 1-6 Horizon League finish in 2008-09 in the first year in the rebirth of the program. Four of those losses were 4-3 setbacks, including three in confer-ence action as the Titans reached the first round of the Horizon League Tournament. On the court, Detroit was led by senior and Team MVP as well as Horizon League Player of the Year PjotrsNecajevs, his second straight league player of the year honors. In his two years at Detroit, Ne-cajevs was 55-8 and 14-0 in the Horizon League, all at No. 1 singles. He came to UDM and quickly gave the team respect-ability in the Midwest. That respect was seen at the ITA Midwest Regional Cham-pionships in October as he and freshman AlexLatosinsky reached the quarterfi-nals in doubles, defeating tandems from Cleveland State, Western Michigan and the 12th-seeded team from Wisconsin. Last year, senior PatrickTroy who helped set the program’s foundation, completed his time at UDM. Troy was the recipient of the team’s Scholar-Athlete award for the second straight year as he finished his collegiate career with over 40 total victories at the Division I level. He played No. 2, 3 and 4 singles in his two years and helped form one of the best Titan doubles tandems, playing alongside sophomore NickTolomei. There were six underclassmen on the eight-man roster, including four fresh-men. The group was led by second team All-Horizon League honoree CesarEs-cobarSerrano, who became the first Titan freshman to receive all-conference accolades. Serrano, who was also the team’s Newcomer of the Year, missed the fall campaign and a few dual matches in January, but still finished the year fourth

Tennis Facilities The outdoor home of the Detroit Titans opened on Sept. 13, 2008 when the new Titan Tennis Complex, located im-mediately south of Calihan Hall, was unveiled.

Nearly a year after Titan Field was rennovated, Detroit welcomed a new varsity tennis complex, featuring eight hard courts and a viewing pavilion, as well as an additional ath-letic field.

The 4,000-square-foot cov-ered pavilion is located at the north end of the facility. The venue also serves as home for the University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy boy’s tennis team, as U of D Jesuit was a major financial contribu-tor to the overall project.

A formal blessing of the new tennis com-plex was conducted by UDM President Fr. Gerard Stockhausen, S.J. In attendance were members of the women’s and new men’s ten-nis teams, their families, UDM staff and many of the donors who made construction of the

new facility possible. The complex features eight varsity courts and a 4,000-square-foot viewing pavilion. TMP Architecture (Bloom-field Hills) served as the lead architect for the project, while The Monahan Company (East-pointe) served as general contractor.

The Franklin Athletic Club is considered one of the premier tennis and fitness clubs in the country. There are thirteen air-conditioned indoor courts available year-round with pro-grams offerred for the begin-ning player through the ad-vanced national level player. Franklin has received inter-national recognition not only for its facility, but also for our world renowned teaching staff, which includes Titans men’s head coach Grant Asher who teaches professionally at the indoor club.

Entering its 32nd sea-son of operation in the 2010-11 academic year, the Horizon League con-tinues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading ath-letics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the develop-ment of student-athletes as leaders and role models.

The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a sto-ried tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler Uni-versity, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chi-cago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State Univer-sity and Youngstown State University.

The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic perfor-mance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-ath-lete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, ex-cellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross coun-try, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, in-door track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swim-ming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volley-ball).

The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, wom-

en’s golf. The Horizon League is headquar-tered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Av-enue), located a block from Lucas Oil Sta-dium and just minutes from Conseco Field-house, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Mid-western City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current mem-bers Butler and Loyola as well as the Uni-versity of Evansville, Oklahoma City Uni-versity, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.

Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with North-ern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Val-paraiso in 2007.

On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League un-veiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of be-ing one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on en-hancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s 2010 NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Duke, 61-59. The Horizon League has compiled a 10-7 record in the past five years in the NCAA tournament, ranking sixth among all collegiate conferences for winning percent-age.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team be-came the league’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010 with Cleveland State receiving the automatic nod. The Phoenix knocked off No. 5 seed Virginia in the first round before falling to Elite Eight participant Iowa State, 60-56.Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last eight years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, includ-ing more than 600 for the last four semes-ters. Twenty-seven student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Aca-demic All-District teams in 2009-10, while 10 earned Academic All-America honors.

COMMUNITY SERVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Hori-zon League has secured a well-earned repu-tation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, mu-sic and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners rec-ognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day.

The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advi-sory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in India-napolis during its annual summer meeting.

In addition, sev-eral League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samari-tan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball champi-onship.On campus, stu-dent-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighbor-hood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister pro-grams and more.

SPORTSMANSHIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of em-phasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coach-es, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each sea-son by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMOGRAPHICSHorizon League institutions boast a com-bined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the na-tion’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

VISIBILITYThe Horizon League has enhanced its me-dia visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college bas-ketball’s premier in-season events.

The main goal of the Strength and Condi-tioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respected sport. This will be accom-plished in such a way that is safe and ef-ficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activi-ties we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete reha-bilitation.

Each team will have an individualized pro-gram based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill in-volved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Commu-nication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field.

The Titans condition and train in the Larry

Bleach Fit-ness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM stu-dent-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches. Ev-ery member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is as-signed a team, which allows daily interac-tion between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team.

In the past three years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Olym-pic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Perfor-mance nutritional shake, which is designed

to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

The UDM strength and condi-tioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as major league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 stu-dent-athletes.

The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and reha-bilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a fam-ily practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthope-dic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Pat-rick Jean-Pierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage.

The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirl-pools, and rehabilitative equipment.

The goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department are to prevent athletic injuries as best pos-sible through effective injury prevention programs, and

to return injured athletes to their previ-ous com-petitive status in the safest and quick-est manner possible.

When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of De-troit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competi-tion is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Develop-ment, one of the first of its kind, offers pro-grams for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the pro-grams offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All fresh-man and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to col-lege. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress manage-ment, study skills and the importance of good

nutritional habits.

Another ex-ample of Detroit’s com-mitment to its student-ath-letes’ academ-ic excellence is the Ath-letic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff care-fully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has eve-ning hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-ath-letes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA.

The University of Detroit Mercy is commit-ted to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regula-tions and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University.

The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our in-stitution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

Titan Hall Of FameUDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, follow-ing the 10 latest addi-tions made on Home-coming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.

The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The induct-ees included two of the Titans’ former bas-ketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Ad-ditionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner.

Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.

Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity sea-sons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring.

The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience capti-vated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans.

The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Athletic DirectorKeri Gaither was appoint-ed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007.

Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her first year, Gaither

also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department and directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track. Gaither also led a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass practice field for soccer and lacrosse.

Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong lead-ership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007.

Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host insti-tution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ulti-mate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field.

For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associ-ate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selec-tion as A.D., Gaither had served in several key admin-istrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administra-tor and director of business operations.

As a current member of the Horizon League’s Execu-tive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the finance and television committees. She is also the council’s liaison to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steer-

ing Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liai-son during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member.

Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee.

Gaither also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events.

In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Mi-nority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the criti-cal shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leader-ship training and skills development experience.

Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercol-legiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, National Association of Colle-giate Directors of Athletics and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association.

She currently serves on the NCAA’s the Minority Op-portunities and Interests Committee as well as the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the director of athletics at UDM.

Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts de-gree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award.

Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior in UDM’s pre-dentistry program, and Kennedy (12).

Titan Points Of PrideTITANS RECEIVE HIGH MARKS IN LATEST NCAA’S APR REPORTNo less than eight Titan athletic teams brought home perfect scores in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate report issued in June for 2008-09.

At the same time, every one of Detroit’s varsity teams registered a multi-year APR above the minimum standard (925) established by the NCAA. And no contemporaneous or historical penalties were cited against UDM as all varsity teams met NCAA standards. Eight teams which received perfect 1000’s for 2008-09 are men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s track and field and softball.

ACADEMIC ACCOLADES KEEP ROLLING IN FOR DETROITThree members of the 2010 Ho-rizon League Champion Detroit Titans men’s golf team – David By-rne, Jeff Clarridge and Britt Pronk – were named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team, while five members of the 2010 Horizon League champion Titan women’s golf team - Alex Aversa, Rachel McHenry, Alainna Stefan, Marni Achterhoff Collette Hansen - were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association as members of its All-American Scholar Teams.

In addition, UDM women’s bas-ketball senior Brigid Mulroy was named an honorable mention member of the 2010 Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team.

The Titan men’s golf team was honored by the Golf Coaches As-sociation of America for having one

of the 10 highest Division I team grade point averages in the na-tion for 2010-11. With a 3.58 team GPA, the Titans were recognized as a President’s Special Recognition status for earning a team GPA of at least a 3.50.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams earned ITA All-Academic Teams in the summer of 2010, while Alex Latosinsky, Nick Tolo-mei, Patrick Troy, Melanie Capuano, Svetlana Flankova, Carolina Salas Espinosa and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom were all ITA Scholar-Athletes.

Over 65 percent of all Detroit student-athletes were named to the AD Honor Roll, which marked the 19th consecutive semester in which over 50 percent of the University’s student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 or better. More than 100 student-athletes were listed on the Horizon League’s fall and spring Academic Honor Roll, while 18 Titans were selected to the HL All-Academic Teams. For the Ti-tans competing out of the Horizon League, six men’s lacrosse players landed on the All-MAAC Academic Team, while a conference best five women lacrosse players were selected to the All-NLC Academic Team DETROIT ATHLETICS INKS PART-NERSHIP DEAL WITH NIKEThe Detroit Titans Athletic Depart-ment announced an exclusive agreement with Nike last October– Nike will now provide apparel for all 19 of the Titans’ Division I varsity teams as part of the deal. In the near future, Titan fans will be able to “Wear What the Titans Wear” by purchasing officially-licensed Detroit Titan Logoed Nike products on-line and at Calihan Hall in the Titan Gift Shop.

UDM SEES HALL OF FAME GROW TO 112 MEMBERSThe ranks of the Detroit Titans Sports Hall of Fame swelled by 10 in January as the 2010 Induction Class – which includes former Hori-zon League Men’s Basketball Play-

ers of the Year Jermaine Jackson and Rashad Phillips – was inducted during halftime of the men’s bas-ketball game against Wright State.

The class also includes two other former Detroit basketball greats (Cassandra Pack and Joe Kopicki) as well as former stars from base-ball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele). Together, they will bring the num-ber of greats in the Hall of Fame to 112. UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, during the University’s Centennial year, in order to honor those student-ath-letes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the suc-cessful tradition of Titan Athletics.

TITANS OUT IN THE COMMUNITYA number of the UDM Titan athletic programs and student-athletes were involved in community service projects throughout the year. The Student-Athlete Advisory Commit-tee (SAAC) was busy handing out meals to the homeless in down-town Detroit as part of its “Sand-wich Bus” initiative.

The UDM women’s lacrosse team helped raise money for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance during one of its home games, while the men’s team played at the Annual Nick Colleluori Classic, a fall scrimmage, to benefit cancer awareness. The women’s basketball squad vis-ited GESU Elementary School for a reading exercise for grades kinder-garten through sixth grade, and the men’s program visited God Land Church in Detroit to help distribute Thanksgiving Day dinners to fami-lies in need before the Thanksgiving holiday.
