The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its new, on-campus facility in October of 2007. The new facility is on the site of the old natural-grass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events. The field is utilized by the men’s and women’s lacrosse, track and field and soccer programs.

The men’s lacrosse team played its first home game on the field on April 11, 2009, falling to Wheeling Jesuit, 14-7. The game was more about the history of the event rather than the score as it was believed to be the first-ever men’s collegiate lacrosse game played in the Motor City. With 703 spectators on hand for the event on Easter weekend, it was also believed to be one of the biggest crowds to watch a game at Titan Field.

“It was great to really get all these fans out here for our first game,” said head coach Matt Holtz after the game. “The support and atmosphere was great.”

Titan junior Pat O’Shea netted the field’s first

lacrosse goal nearly seven minutes into the contest, with sophomore Matt Gregson feeding him the pass for the assist.

The installation of the A-Turf and track was just the first part of the Titan Field upgrades. Phase 2, when

completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, rest rooms, a press box, new scoreboard, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage.

“The construction of our new synthetic field and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.”

During the winter, the Titans practice indoors at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, a facility that houses three “state of the art” fields, equipped with Astro-Turf GameDay grass XPE withTurfAide built-in, in-laid striping and the latest in infill to the envy of any sport.

The entire facility has been built to the finest standards and energy efficiency with R-30 insulation rating in all areas. Air conditioning, heat and indirect lighting are designed for the highest quality of play.

Amenities include: restaurant, pro shop, state-of-the-art Sports Performance & Training Center, team party rooms, coaches room, referees room, locker rooms, multiple restroom facilities, HD TV & wireless access, European coffee shop, plenty of seating throughout and a second floor mezzanine viewing deck for all fields

Ultimate Soccer Arenas is the home to the Michigan Bucks Soccer Team and All-American Lacrosse.

Ultimate Soccer Arenas not only serves as a practice site, but a home venue as well as the Titans

host one game a year in the facility.

In 2010, the inaugural Titan home game in the indoor facility saw 1,565 lacrosse fans jam the building to see the only Division I program in the state of Michigan. Detroit took a 5-4 lead after the first period thanks to three goals by Joel Matthews in his first collegiate game, before Bellarmine rallied to win the game, 12-8.

In 2011, Detroit’s annual game in Pontiac will take place on Feb. 26 at noon as the Titans welcome Mercer, the newest member to NCAA Division I lacrosse scene.

In what has become a tradi-tion at Detroit, parents of the program have staged a postgame meal follow-ing every home game. The Titans and parents get together either outside under the Pavilion at the Titan Tennis Complex or inside Calihan Hall in the Ed & Brooks Room.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 30th year of competition during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for 2011, with Springfield’s MassMutual Center preparing to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

MAAC Associate SportsIn June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop

opportunities for student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena - and three associate members - Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena.

In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools - Iona, Marist and Siena - as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner.

Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris will begin competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members - Albany, Boston University and Hartford - to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

Academics and AthleticsThe MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments

of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999.

First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will be contested in the fall of 2010, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2011 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its volleyball championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 75 NIT appearances and 45 NCAA appearances. In addition, Fairfield represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament while the Fairfield women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in

November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store.

The MAAC President for the 2010-2011 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College. Ed McLaughlin, Director of Athletics at Niagara University, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Karin Torchia, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Rider University will serve as Vice Chair.

GOALIESGoing into year three of the Titan program, Detroit

looks to be strong in net with three talented players vying for playing time, led by sophomore A.J. Levell, who started the first 13 games last season as a fresh-man.

“As a unit, I think we have three guys who can play and each will push each other for playing time,” said third-year head coach Matt Holtz.

Levell, who will also serve as a team captain, ended his rookie season with 136 saves, a .482 saves per-centage and a 12.27 goals against average. He tallied double-digit saves nine times, setting a career high of 14 at Ohio State and at Siena. He also finished third on the team with 37 ground balls.

Levell was the winner in net as the Titans defeated Presbyterian, 16-12, for the program’s first ever vic-tory. He recorded four saves in that game and then came back to post 12 saves as Detroit downed VMI, 11-8, for its first-ever MAAC victory.

“A.J. played very well for us last year and just had some of those freshman mistakes throughout the sea-son,” said Holtz. “So far, he is making smarter deci-sions and he is not turning the ball over, which is what he needed to work on.”

Behind Levell will be two skilled, but young, keepers in junior Mike Brown and freshman Danny Kransberg-er. Brown has been a member of the Titans since the

program’s start, lending depth at not only the goalie position, but anywhere Detroit has needed him.

Kransberger arrives at Detroit after a very successful prep career, where he was a three-time All-State, All-Conference and All-Area goalie. He left high school as the record holder for saves in a game (22), season (25) and career (701), all while posting a 36-17 career record.

“Mike is a guy who will do whatever we ask him to do,” said Holtz. “He stepped into a practice role and has improved to the point where he is a very service-able goalie and someone who will just continue to get better. Danny is putting some pressure on A.J. for the starting job. He is a little more athletic and he is improving as a ball stopper and in the clearing game.”

FACE-OFFSDetroit went into last season extremely young in the

face-off position with two freshmen primarily taking most of the battles. While both sophomores Brandon Davenport and Tyler Corcoran held their own as rook-ies, the group will be much improved with a year un-der their belt as well as with the return of sophomore Danny Preston, who missed last season due to injury.

“Face-offs is definitely something that we need to improve and I think that just the experience the guys have from last year will help,” said Holtz. “Last year, I think a lot of it was a mental issue in that we had young kids who were trying to get ahead and we jumped the whistle a lot. With the new rules on face-offs, there is a set call now and the new mechanics, it will be real interesting to see how it all plays out.”

Davenport took most of the face-offs a year ago win-ning half of his 224 attempts, while racking up a team-best 54 ground balls. He won double-digit face-offs five times last season, including a school record 16 at Robert Morris. He notched his lone goal of the year right after winning the face-off at Manhattan, streaking down field to put one past the goalie.

Corcoran was 34-of-95 last season with a season-high seven wins in the opener against Bellarmine to go with six at Lehigh and a 5-3 record at Yale. He picked up 12 ground balls and also showed his athletic ability by scoring a goal right off a face-off victory against the Mountain Hawks.

“It has been a battle in camp between Brandon and Tyler and right now, both guys are playing well which is good for us. They both are very similar in style and in what they are trying to do,” added Holtz.

The return of Preston will give Detroit another option at the position, especially from a change of pace perspective.

Preston tallied 84 victories as a freshman in 2009, recording double-digit wins on five occasions. His best effort came in the first game in Titan history as he was 11-7 at Ohio State. He also posted a season-high 13 twice, against Manhattan and at Presbyterian.

MIDFIELDThe Titans should be sound in the midfield with a

number of seasoned players returning to the unit. Of-fensively, the midfield has two very strong lines, while defensively, Detroit returns a pair of talented LSM’s.

“We have a lot of guys returning who have estab-lished themselves as good players who continue to improve,” said Holtz. “I think the experience these guys have built up in the last two years will really help us, and we will add some freshmen to the mix who have really stepped up.”

The Titans will look to senior Matt Gregson to once again provide an offensive punch. Gregson led De-troit in scoring with 15 goals and 10 assists in UDM’s inaugural season in 2009, and he came back last year to tally 23 goals and post 31 points. He also has 71 ground balls to his credit in two seasons.

Playing alongside Gregson will be junior Tim Lehto, who netted 13 goals and had eight assists last season for 21 points. Lehto showed tremendous improve-ment from his freshman campaign of 2008, where he totaled just two points on two helpers. The third spot on the first line is still a battle in camp

with a number of freshmen looking to make an impact.

“They are our top players at the position,” said Holtz. “Gregson had 20 goals last year and we probably need him to go over 25 and into 30, while Lehto went from not scoring to getting 13 goals last year so he continues to work hard and improve.”

The Titans’ second line looks to be made up of ju-niors Ty Maruyama and John Nowicki and sophomore Chris Nemes. Maruyama, one of the Titans’ five team captains, had five goals on just 11 shots last season, while Nowicki added eight scores and nine assists for 17 points. Nemes enjoyed a fine freshman sea-son with 10 goals and five helpers, while adding 12 ground balls.

“I think that the second line of Nowicki, Ty and Nemes is really coming together,” said Holtz. “They played together a lot last year and they have really shelled as a group.”

The Titans will have plenty of depth and options on its roster and players who will also battle for substan-tial playing time in junior Adam Parrottino, sophomore

Stephen Mastracci, redshirt freshman Nick Schesnuk and rookies, Matt Lining, Joe MacClean, Troy Dennis, Tim Robertson, Drew Schupbach and Vince Indiano.

Defensively, junior captain Brad Janer returns to sta-bilize the Titans as one of their defensive midfielders. Janer is a do-it-all type player who has notched five goals, two assists, 40 ground balls and caused eight turnovers in his first two years in a Titan uniform.

“On transition mode and on defense, Janer is as good as a defensive middie as there is in our confer-ence,” added Holtz.

The Titans are very talented with the long pole as se-nior and team captain Tim Shoemaker is back along with sophomore Jordan Houtby, UDM’s Defensive Player of the Year last season. Shoemaker picked up 22 ground balls a year ago and has 40 in his career to go with 14 caused turnovers, a goal and two assists.

Houtby made a major impact as he finished second on the squad in GB’s (53), while leading the MAAC, and all Division I freshmen, with 32 caused turnovers. He also ended up among the nation’s leaders finish-ing sixth in the country in caused TO’s with 2.13 per game.

“Houtby and Shoemaker are our 1-2 guys at that position. Each guy really has his own strengths and weaknesses. In the open field, I think Shoemaker is a bit better as well as on the wing in face-offs, but on the ball and covering a man, that is Houtby’s biggest strength.”

Detroit will also see junior Adam Nolan get some time at LSM moving over from his defensive side, while freshmen Nick Garippa, Kevin DiSalle and Max will all add depth and look to make contributions.

DEFENSEDetroit returns three letterwinners and two starters

from a defense that kept the Titans in a lot of games last year, while finishing among the nation’s leaders in caused turnovers with 10.47 per game. Juniors Jason McDonald and Adam Nolan along with sophomore Jamie Hebden are back to once again lead the “D”.

“Last year our philosophy, which at times worked and at times didn’t, was just to try and not let teams have the ball that long,” said Holtz. “Traditionally, a lacrosse mind would say we were over aggressive, but we focused on how to recover and we pressed up far enough that we would have time to recover. It also didn’t hurt that we have athletic kids who could go out there and play that way.”

McDonald and Nolan have been a part of the building blocks since the program’s first year in 2008. McDon-ald is the only Detroit player to start all 26 games in Ti-tan history and enters his junior campaign as a captain. He ended last year third on the squad with 19 caused turnovers, while collecting 25 ground balls. In his ca-reer, McDonald has 36 GB’s and 24 caused turnovers.

“McDonald is a very solid guy who needs to do a bet-ter job at controlling his penalties and he has done that in practice,” said Holtz. “Nolan has contributed for two years here and will help us at both defense and LSM.”

Hebden came in as a freshman last year and immedi-ately established himself as not only one of the team’s best defenders, but one of the top defensemen in the MAAC. He started all 15 games and ended his rookie year 25th in Division I with 1.6 caused turnovers per game. His 24 takeaways was the second most on the team and the third most of any freshmen in the coun-try. He also picked up 28 ground balls and added an assist.

“He was one of the better defenseman in the league last year and I think he has a chance to become the best defenseman in the MAAC,” added Holtz.

Behind those three, Detroit will rely on the defensive efforts from their LSM’s in senior Tim Shoemaker and sophomore Jordan Houtby

UDM will also have sophomore John Dwyer back to add depth and will have three freshmen looking for minutes in Nick Garippa, Max Zwolan and Brian Smith.

ATTACKThe Titan attack is young with just one upperclass-

men returning, but Detroit will have a few newcomers looking to make an impact, and if all goes well, Detroit will showcase a very balanced scoring front.

“It is going to be some work to replace the guys we don’t have this year, but we have a number of solid players on the team who can score,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “I think we will be very balanced and not leaning on that one scorer like we did at times last year.”

The Titans will be without the services of sophomores Joel Matthews and Tyler Staruch, who will both take a year off to focus on academics.

The lone upperclassman on the unit is junior Scott Harris. Harris enjoyed a breakthrough sophomore cam-paign ending the year with 12 goals and a team-high 14 assists for 26 points, a huge improvement over his freshman numbers of three goals and one assist.

“Harris is someone who we are going to look to lead us with his experience,” said Holtz. “He has to step up in that leadership role and after seeing the improve-ments he made last year, I am confident that he will.”

A host of newcomers will be given the chance to step in and provide a scoring punch, with that group headed by redshirt freshman Wes Steen. Steen missed all of his true rookie season due to injury, but looks to be back after notching six goals in the Titans’ preseason scrimmage.

“We thought Wes was going to be out third attackmen last year as a freshman,” Holtz said. “He is just solid all the way around and he knows how to find the back of the cage. There is nothing that sticks out about his game, but he just knows how to play and how to find the back of the net.”

Freshmen Shayne Adams, Alex Maini, Tom Master-son and Alex Wilson will all be in the mix for playing time, along with sophomore Erek Bender, who will provide depth at both attack and midfield.

“I think that our freshman have a good chance of coming up big for us,” said Holtz. “Maini and Masterson are good players and Adams has the ability to give us three goals in a game so we might be young, but we should have a good four or five man rotation depend-ing on the day and the team we are playing.”

Head CoachMatt Holtz

Third SeasonMatt Holtz enters his third

season as the head men’s coach at the University of Detroit Mercy and he has quickly put the Titans on the right path to success at the

Division I level. Using his coaching ties in the state as well as dipping into the Canadian talent pool, Holtz will begin year three with the largest roster size he has had to work with, which already doubles the size of the program’s original playing roster in 2008.

In just his second year at the helm, he led the red, white and blue to its first three victories, an All-Conference selection and a defense that ranked in the top 10 in the nation in caused turnovers.

Detroit finished the 2009 season at 3-12, 2-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, its first season as a member of the league. Detroit was in every game as UDM saw seven of its losses come by just four goals or less, including a pair of 9-8 decisions. In MAAC play, five of Detroit’s six setbacks were within a three goal margin.

The biggest win in his career came in March as the Titans beat Presbyterian,16-12, on Titan Field for the program’s first-ever victory. The 16 markers set a

program high for goals in a game. Just five days later, Detroit added its second win with an 11-8 triumph against VMI for their first MAAC tally. In that game UDM was down 2-0 before scoring five straight to take a lead it would never relinquish. UDM would also end the year on a high note by doubling up Wagner, 14-7.

Under his direction, UDM received its first conference honor as Joel Matthews was named to the All-MAAC second team after ending the year 14th in the nation with 2.47 goals and 36th totaling 3.2 points per game. Two other Holtz recruited freshmen made a name for themselves in 2010 as freshman long pole Jordan Houtby was sixth in the country causing 2.13 turnovers per game, a number that also led the MAAC, while Jamie Hebden was 25th in the NCAA with 1.6 per game.

As a team, the Titan defense finished third in the nation with 10.47 caused turnovers per game, trailing only Maryland (11.38) and Syracuse (10.67). Detroit also placed 17th in saves per game (11.53) and 19th picking up 32.2 ground balls per contest.

Holtz was hired in September of 2007 to transform an idea into a dream as he had to put together the only Division I program in the State of Michigan from scratch.

No lacrosse team existed at UDM, not even a club squad, but Holtz took the challenge head on and quickly went on the recruiting trail and marketed the new Titan program.

Even though Detroit was winless in its first campaign, the seeds were set for a quick growth in the sport and the Titans were invited to join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Holtz came to Detroit from Michigan State, where he was the men’s lacrosse club head coach from 2005-07. Under his reign, the Spartans posted a 22-10 record and had their highest national ranking of 17th in 2006. In that same season, MSU was a Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association (CCLA) finalist and, in 2007, Holtz earned CCLA Coach of the Year honors.

In his two seasons at MSU, Holtz coached five All-Americans, including three Academic All-Americans. He was also successful in raising extra money for the club team in two annual fundraising campaigns.

“Matt has a solid background in college lacrosse based on his success at Michigan State. He brings a great knowledge of the game with him to UDM. The fact that he has long-standing ties to lacrosse in the State of Michigan should be very beneficial,” UDM Athletic Director Keri Gaither said.

Prior to becoming the head coach of MSU’s club team, Holtz served as offensive coordinator for the Spartans from 1997-2005. In this role, Holtz designed and taught offensive strategies, assisted in off-field management, travel arrangements, recruiting, scouting and budgeting.

While a student at State, Holtz played club lacrosse all four years and served as team captain his last two seasons. In addition, Holtz was a member of the Motor City Lacrosse Club from 1997-2000. Holtz is also a local product as he graduated from Detroit Catholic Central in 1992.

Holtz graduated from MSU in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. He and his wife, Dr. Bree Holtz, currently reside in Canton.

Chris KolonThird Season

Entering his third year as a Titan assistant coach, Chris Kolon oversees all aspects of the Titans’ defense and serves as UDM’s recruiting

coordinator.

Kolon’s defensive mind and aggressiveness was showcased in Detroit’s second season as the Titans were third in the nation in caused turnovers at 10.47 per game. No stranger to lacrosse in the Metro Detroit area, Kolon has long been dedicated to the growth of lacrosse in Michigan.

He began his coaching career with Coach Holtz at Michigan State (2000-2001). Kolon then spent the next few years as a high school coach at Detroit Country Day (2003-2004) and Birmingham Seaholm (2006-2007), serving as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at all three stops, while maintaining a collegiate lacrosse officiating schedule.

Kolon, a 1999 Rutgers University graduate, lettered for four years as a defenseman for the Scarlet Knights. He is a local graduate of Seaholm, where he quickly picked up the game as a sophomore and parlayed his love of the game into a collegiate scholarship, earning him the distinction of the first player from Seaholm history to play and earn a scholarship at the Division I level.

Kolon earned his MBA from Detroit in 2009. He is also the Marketing Director and Vice President of Scorpion Sports, Ltd., a sporting goods equipment manufacturer, and is on the Advisory Board of All-American Lacrosse Leagues.

Kolon, and his wife Elizabeth, are the proud parents of one-year twin sons, John and Thomas.

Bill Kozyra is in his third season on the Titan coaching staff and he has been a part of Detroit lacrosse from its very

first game. His duties include special teams as well as assisting with the defense.

Working with head coach Matt Holtz and assistant coach Chris Kolon, Kozyra helped guide the Titans to the programs first three wins in 2010, and that was with a roster full of freshmen and sophomores. He also saw the defense ranked in the top 10 in the nation in caused turnovers, which helped keep Detroit in every game they played.

Kozyra began his coaching career at Notre Dame Preparatory/Marist Academy in 2004, coaching the middle school program for three seasons (2004-2006)

before moving up to the varsity program as an assistant for the next two years. During his time, he helped guide the varsity team to a 29-10 overall record and a Catholic League B-Division championship in 2008, following a 17-1 regular season, as well as a trip to the state regional finals.

A 2007 graduate of Oakland University with a bachelor’s degree in business management, he played defense for the OU club lacrosse team for three seasons, helping the program to two CCLA Conference championships as well as two trips to the MCLA National Finals.

Kozyra is currently enrolled in UDM’s MBA program.

Matt Karweck First Season

Matt Karweck, a four-year letterwinner at Notre Dame as well as a former Major League Lacrosse player, was added to the Titan staff for the 2011 season.

For Detroit, he will assist in all facets of the program especially on the offensive side of the ball.

“Matt brings a wealth of lacrosse knowledge and experience to Detroit,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “He will be taking over our extra man offense and many aspects of our offense in general and we are extremely excited to have him be a part of our team.”

Karweck is coming off a three-year stint as head coach for Indiana University, a club lacrosse program competing in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA), the same league that coach Holtz was in before arriving in the Motor City. Karweck guided IU to 25 wins in his three seasons as well as an appearance in the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference (GRLC). While at Indiana, Karweck also received his

master’s in kinesiology and owned and ran Overtime Lacrosse, a summer camp program.

Prior to that, Karweck played two seasons for the Chicago Machine in the MLL. Playing attack for the Machine, he registered 10 points in just seven games, including a hat trick performance against San Francisco. That came after a year that he spent in England teaching and coaching lacrosse while he started his professional career playing for the Sheffield Steelers of the English Lacrosse Association.

Karweck graduated from Notre Dame’s College of Arts & Letters in 2006. At ND, he played in 52 career games, with 40 starts, mostly from the midfield position. He ended his career with 60 goals and 30 assists for 90 points, while scooping up 78 ground balls. He was selected to the Great Western Lacrosse League second team as a junior and first team as a senior. He attended Penn Yan Academy in New York and led the team to the Section V Class C high school championship in four straight seasons as well as the state championship in 2001.

The Detroit Titans men’s lacrosse team took some giant steps in year two as the red, white and blue ended the year with its first three victories, an all-conference selection, a truck load of close games and a statistical ranking in the top 10 in the nation.

“I feel very good where we are at after our second year,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “We are still young, but we have some talented players and I believe we took a step forward this year competing and playing hard throughout the season.”

Detroit finished the season at 3-12, 2-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, its first season as a member of the league, for a seventh place finish. UDM saw seven of its losses by just four goals or less, including a pair of 9-8 decisions. In MAAC play, five of Detroit’s six setbacks were within a three goal margin.

The biggest achievements of the year occurred within the same week as the Titans came up with their first win in program history, 16-12, over Presbyterian on Titan Field on March 22. The 16 markers set a program high for goals in a game. The offensive attack was led by freshman Tyler Staruch who scorched the Blue House for five goals. In all, nine Titans registered goals as coach Holtz felt the sensation of an ice bath at the end of the contest.

“We turned the corner with that win,” said Holtz. “We had played a few close games and a few games got away from us, but we were able to get our first win and that really helped us play hard the rest of the year.”

After tasting victory, the Titans added their second win just five days later with an 11-8 triumph against VMI for their first MAAC tally. In that game UDM was down 2-0 before scoring five straight to take a lead it would never relinquish.

Offensively, Detroit was led in that game by freshman and team MVP Joel Matthews, who would make his mark not only in the league, but nationally too. Matthews had seven hat tricks on the season, tied for the seventh most in the country, which included four goals versus the Keydets. He started off the

year with a bang with four markers against Bellarmine and had five more three weeks later at Ohio State. In his third game, he found the back of the net three times to give him 12 goals in his first three games and he would eventually end the year leading the team with 37 goals and 48 points. Those numbers ranked him among the leaders in the MAAC and he also had the most goals scored in the regular season by a rookie at the Division I level, while finishing 16th in the

Joel Matthews was the team MVP after leading the team and all Division I freshmen with 37 goals.

2010 Season In Review

Jamie Hebden started all 15 games in his freshman season and finished 28th in the country causing 1.5 turnovers per game.

nation with 2.47 goals per game. He was selected second team all-conference at the end of the year by the MAAC coaches.

“He played great for us and he has a great future ahead of him,” added Holtz.

A number of returnees from the inaugural season came back with a year of DI experience and that clearly showed. Junior Matt Gregson, who led the team in 2009 with 15 goals and 25 points, came back to post 23 goals and finished with 31 points to earn team Offensive Player of the Year accolades.

Sophomore Scott Harris (3 goals, 1 assist in 2009) led the Titans with 14 helpers and added 12 goals, while junior Tim Lehto tallied 13 scores and eight assists, compared to just two points last season.

Sophomore John Nowicki matched his freshman goal total with eight, but also added nine assists for 17 points and sophomores Ty Maruyama and Brad Janer each increased their scoring output from a year ago.

“We had a number of returning players who stepped up their game and played beyond expectations,” said Holtz. “We got great efforts from guys like Lehto, Harris and Gregson on offense and Nolan and Butts on defense.”

The Titans ended the regular season third in the country in caused turnovers at 10.47 per game, a category that they led in for two weeks during the year. Once again, a number of returning players made contributions and improved their play for the Titans to be able to compete in every game. Seniors Chris Butts and Tim Shoemaker along with junior Adam Nolan and sophomore Jason McDonald keyed the Titan defensive unit.

Butts, the Coach’s award winner, picked up 30 ground balls and had 10 caused turnovers, while McDonald had 25 GB’s and 19 caused turnovers. Nolan scooped up 14 ground balls and Shoemaker, playing the LSM position, had 22 GB’s, eight caused TO’s, a goal and two assists. Senior Vince Diana also played an important role as the second string goalie before assuming the full time job late in the year ending the season with a .521 saves percentage.

Two talented freshmen defenders in Jamie Hebden and Jordan Houtby also came up in a big way for Detroit. The Titan Defensive Player of the Year, Houtby was second on the team with 53 ground ball pick-ups, while his 32 caused turnovers led the team and were good for seventh in the country in caused TO’s per game (2.13). Hebden had 28 GB’s and was 26th in the nation at 1.5 turnovers per game.

“Houtby was our Defensive MVP so that really shows what he meant to our team this year,” said Holtz. “We knew as a coaching staff that Hebden would be good but to see him contribute as much as he did as a freshman was a bit of a surprise, but he is a good player who will only get better.”

Newcomers played a major role all over as Staruch was tied for fourth on the team with 13 goals and was fifth with 18 total points, while freshman Chris Nemes netted 10 goals and had five assists. Rookie Brandon Davenport won 50 percent of his face-offs and collected a team-high 54 ground balls and A.J. Levell started 13 games in net making 136 saves while winning the first two games in Titan history.

“We still have a young team next year, but I believe that we have the talent in place to win and now we just need to learn how to win to reach that next level,” added Holtz.


Jordan Houtby was UDM’s Defensive Player of the Year after ending the year seventh in the nation in caused turnovers and second on the team in GB’s.

September, 2005 - A report is presented to the Athletic board about the expansion of varsity sports in the ath-letic department. A full study on the addition of certain sports was presented as the case study would evaluate all aspects of the sports from budgets to the addition of athletic staff.

January, 2007 - The University Board of Trustees ap-proves the addition of three new varsity sports.

Summer, 2007 - Construction begins on Titan Field.

September 5, 2007 - Detroit athletic director Keri Gaither announced the addition of three sports to Titan athletics in men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, with all three beginning in the 2008-09 season.

September 24, 2007 - UDM athletic director Keri Gaither names Matt Holtz as the first head coach for the new pro-gram. Holtz came to Detroit from Michigan State, where he was the men’s lacrosse club head coach from 2005-07.

September 25, 2007 - Coach Holtz embarks on building the Titan program.

October, 2007 - The newly renovated Titan Field, which now includes an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane poly-urethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events, was completed. The new facility will be home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse and soccer teams.

May 9, 2008 - The University of Detroit Mercy men’s lacrosse head coach Matt Holtz announced the Titans first ever recruiting class, a 17-member group.

September 9, 2008 - The Detroit Titans men’s lacrosse program practiced for the first time as the team held of-ficial tryouts on Titan Field.

September 30, 2008 - Head men’s lacrosse coach Matt Holtz announced that seniors Kevin Demorest and Riley Turchetti along with junior Pat O’Shea have been named the first team captains in program history.

October 12, 2008 - Detroit had its first team competition as UDM scored the first nine goals in a 10-9 victory over Adrian College, before falling, 7-5, to Wittenberg in an exhibition doubleheader in Springfield, Ohio.

October 27, 2008 - The first varsity schedule is released with Detroit playing 11 games and just one home contest.

February 7, 2009 - A new chapter in UDM athletics started as the men’s lacrosse team began its collegiate program in Columbus against Ohio State, falling to the

Buckeyes 21-1 at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center. Fresh-man Scott Harris got Detroit on the board for the pro-gram’s first ever goal, taking a pass from senior Michael Schumacher and finding the back of the net.

March 3, 2009 - The Titans play their first-ever ranked op-ponent in No. 3 North Carolina, dropping a 19-4 decision.

April 11, 2009 - With one of the largest crowds in the history of Titan Field on hand, junior Pat O’Shea found the back of the net for Detroit’s first goal as the Titans fell to Wheeling Jesuit, 14-7, in the first ever home contest for the men’s lacrosse program.

May 18, 2009 - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and UDM Director of Athletics Keri Gaither announced that the Detroit Titans men’s lacrosse program has been accepted as an affiliate member of the MAAC Lacrosse League, beginning with the 2010 season. UDM will be im-mediately eligible for postseason play.

October 10, 2009 - The men’s lacrosse team participates in the Annual Nick Colleluori Classic To Benefit Cancer Awareness.

February 6, 2010 - The Titans begin year two of the program with an indoor home game at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac as a crowd of 1,565 fans saw Detroit nar-rowly fall to Bellarmine, 12-8.

February 12, 2010 - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference released its lacrosse preseason poll and the Titans were picked to finish eighth in Detroit’s first year in the MAAC.

February 22, 2010 - The Titans pick up their first-ever MAAC weekly award as Joel Mat-thews was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week. Matthews led the UDM offensive attack in the season opener with four goals, including three of the first four Titan scores of the year. He took a game-high 10 shots with six coming on goal, while also scooping up a pair of ground balls.

March 22, 2010 - It might have been cold, windy and raining in Detroit on a Monday, but there was no better place to make some history as the Titan men’s lacrosse team recorded its first win, 16-12, over Presbyterian on Titan Field. Freshman Tyler Staruch scored a program-high five goals and added an assist, while junior Tim Lehto net-ted three goals and also had a helper. Joel Matthews had a pair of scores and assists, while sophomore Scott Harris and junior Matt Gregson each netted a goal and handed out two assists. Freshman A.J. Levell was the winner in net, stopping four shots on the day, while Rookie Brandon Davenport won 14 of 22 face-offs and had a team-high seven ground balls.

March 22, 2010 - Seven Titans scored goals, led by fresh-man Joel Matthews’ four scores, and rookie netminder A.J. Levell had 12 saves as Detroit won its second straight game, 11-8, over VMI on Saturday afternoon on Titan Field. The win was also the first-ever MAAC victory for De-troit, playing just its second league game of the season.

May 1, 2010 - The final game of the 2010 season saw Detroit used a 5-0 run in the second period to overpower Wagner, 14-7. Eight Titans scored in the victory that moved Detroit to 3-12 on the year and 2-6 in the MAAC. The offensive barrage was led by junior Matt Gregson, who tallied four goals for his third hat trick of the season. The midfielder ended the year second on the team with 23 markers and 31 points, including 16 goals in the last six games.

May 6, 2010 - After an explosive freshman campaign, Joel Matthews was honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with the selection to the All-MAAC second team, The Titan attacker led the team with 37 goals and 48 points and was among the conference leaders in both those categories. The rookie, who was named Rookie of the Week four times during the season. The Academic All-MAAC team was also announced with six Detroit student-

athletes earning the accolade in Nick Hoye, Brad Janer, Ty Maruyama, John Nowicki, Adam Parrottino and Danny Preston. All six of those players also earned their way onto the MAAC’s 2009-10 Academic Honor Roll.

June 8, 2010 - The NCAA recently released the final 2010 men’s lacrosse statistics with the University of Detroit Mer-cy boasting a pair of top 10 marks in the country. Leading the way was an aggressive team defense that finished third in the nation with 10.47 turnovers per game, trailing only Maryland (11.38) and Syracuse (10.67). Detroit also placed 17th in saves per game (11.53) and 19th picking up 32.2 ground balls per contest. Individually, freshman long pole Jordan Houtby was sixth in the nation caus-ing 2.13 turnovers per game, a number that also led the Metro Athletic Atlantic Conference (MAAC). Also finishing high on that list was freshman defender Jamie Hebden, who was 25th in the NCAA with 1.6 per game. Offensively, second team All-MAAC honoree Joel Matthews ended the year 14th with 2.47 goals and 36th totaling 3.2 points per game.

June 9, 2010 - Joel Matthews added another accolade for his fantastic rookie season as he was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-Freshman Second Team. The 2010 team MVP and second team All-MAAC performer, Matthews posted seven hat tricks on the season, tied for the seventh most in the country.

The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation.

Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field.

The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction

between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team.

In the past three years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets guard Willie Green

comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as former Detroit Tigers’ left-hander Nate Robertson.

In what has become an annual event, the department started the very successful “Cardio for a Cause”. The fundraiser showcases 216 participants from student-athletes, UDM athletic department staff and members of the community as each ride a stationary bike for ten minutes, pedaling through the day and night and keeping the bike going for 24 consecutive hours. The 2011 event will help raise money for the Detroit Titan Strength & Conditioning program and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 student-athletes.

The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Joining him for the 2010-11 year is Team Orthopedic Dr. Terrence Lock and Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Patrick Jean-Pierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage.

The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirlpools, and rehabilitative equipment.

The goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department is to prevent athletic injuries as much as possible through effective injury prevention programs, and to return injured athletes to their previous competitive status in the safest and quickest manner possible.

When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its

student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA.

UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.

The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Additionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner.

Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.

Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring.

The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans.

The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster.

The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Keri Gaither was appointed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007.

Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics in May of 2007, less than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Director of Athletics.

Soon after taking the helm of Titan athletics, Gaither announced the

expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which began play in 2008-09. In her first two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither recently completed a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and recently completed tennis complex that includes eight new tennis courts, a tennis pavilion and a new grass practice field for the lacrosse and soccer teams.

Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007.

For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans Athletic Department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. During her tenure as Senior Associate A.D., Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business Operations.

Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional.

As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the finance and television committees.

In July of 2010, Gaither was appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving on the Executive Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addition to its President and five other officers.

Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. The MOIC was formed to review issues related to the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, officiating and the NCAA governance structure.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the Director of Athletics at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for her goals and initiatives in the Detroit Titans athletics program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Final Four.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member.

She also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game, Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events.

In 2006, the Titan AD completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience.

Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and the Black Coaches Association (BCA).

Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award.

Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (20), a junior on the University of Detroit Mercy fencing team, and daughter Kennedy (13).

DETROIT RECEIVE HIGH MARKS IN NCAA’S APR

No less than eight Titan athletic teams brought home perfect scores in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate report issued in June for 2008-09.

At the same time, every one of Detroit’s varsity teams registered a multi-year APR above the minimum standard (925) established by the NCAA. And no contemporaneous or historical penalties were cited against UDM as all varsity teams met NCAA standards. Eight teams which received perfect 1000’s for 2008-09 are men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s track and field and softball.

ACADEMIC ACCOLADES KEEP ROLLING IN FOR DETROIT

Senior women’s basketball player Brigid Mulroy was named an honorable mention member of the 2010 Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team.

Three members of the 2010 Horizon League Champion Detroit Titans men’s golf team – David Byrne, Jeff Clarridge and Britt Pronk– were named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team, while Alex Aversa, Rachel McHenry, Alainna Stefan, Marni Achterhoff and Collette Hansen were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association as members of its All-American Scholar Teams.

The Detroit men’s and women’s track and field teams were recognized for its work in the classroom as both programs were named one of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association’s (USTFCCA) All-Academic Scholar Teams of the Year for the 2009-10 season, while the men’s and women’s cross country programs earned All-Academic Team status for 2009.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams earned ITA All-Academic Teams in the summer of 2010, while Alex Latosinsky, Nick Tolomei, Patrick Troy, Melanie Capuano, Svetlana Flankova, Carolina Salas Espinosa and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom were all ITA Scholar-Athletes.

Over 65 percent of all Detroit student-athletes were named to the AD Honor Roll, which marked the 19th consecutive semester in which over 50 percent of the University’s student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 or better. More than 100 student-athletes were listed on the Horizon League’s fall and spring Academic Honor Roll, while 18 Titans were selected to the HL All-Academic Teams. For the Titans competing out of the Horizon League, six men’s lacrosse players landed on the All-MAAC Academic Team, while a conference-best five women lacrosse players were selected to the All-NLC Academic Team

TITANS SEES HALL OF FAME GROW TO 112 MEMBERS

The ranks of the Detroit Titans Sports Hall of Fame swelled by 10 with the 2010 Induction Class – which includes former Horizon League Men’s Basketball Players of the Year Jermaine Jackson and Rashad Phillips – was inducted.

The class also includes two other former Detroit basketball greats (Cassandra Pack and Joe Kopicki) as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

UDM OUT IN THE COMMUNITY A number of the UDM Titan athletic programs and student-athletes were involved in community service projects throughout the year. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

(SAAC) was busy handing out meals to the homeless as part of its “Sandwich Bus” initiative.

The women’s lacrosse team helped raise money for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance during one of its home games, while the men’s team played at the Annual Nick Colleluori Classic, a fall scrimmage, to benefit cancer awareness.

The women’s basketball squad visited GESU Elementary School for a reading exercise for grades kindergarten through sixth grade, and the men’s program visited God Land Church in Detroit to help distribute Thanksgiving Day dinners to families in need before the Thanksgiving holiday.

UDM INKS PARTNERSHIP DEAL WITH NIKE

The Detroit Titans Athletic Department announced an exclusive agreement with Nike last October– Nike will now provide apparel for all 19 of the Titans’ Division I varsity teams as part of the deal. In the near future, Titan fans will be able to “Wear What the Titans Wear” by purchasing officially-licensed Detroit Titan Logoed Nike products on-line and at Calihan Hall in the Titan Gift Shop. The partnership features multiple revenue opportunities for Titan Athletics, including a VIP program that will allow Titan Club members an exclusive opportunity to purchase a variety of non-UDM Nike items through the Titan website at a significant discount, with a portion of the proceeds coming back to the University.
