Attention: Media Membersand Opposing Schools

Since the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College in 1990, UDM athletic teams have found themselves referred to in many different forms.

In order to maintain consistency, we ask that the media continue to refer to us as UDM -- or use Detroit or Detroit Titans -- and eliminate the use of such abbreviations as U-D, U of D Mercy, Detroit Mercy, University of Detroit, etc.

When refering to Detroit women's intercollegiate athletic teams, please do not use the term "Lady Titans". All of our teams should be called the Titans.

Thank you for your cooperation and your continuing coverage of the Detroit Titans.

UDM Record 10-12 (1 Year)Career Record 10-12 (1 Year)

Men’s Tennis Coaching StaffSam Poole enters his second year at the helm of the Titan women’s tennis program after setting the bar pretty high in his first season. He was presented a challenge in taking over a team that just set its single season win total with 15 and advanced to its first Horizon League Championship match in school history. Four seniors and three starters also departed after the year leaving Detroit in a rebuilding mode to start the 2009-10 season and a seven match losing streak would open the campaign.

Detroit rebounded to win nine of their next 12, advancing to their second straight HL title match. Detroit was 6-2 in the conference and had three victories by way of a 7-0 sweep en route to a 10-win season. Freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa was named the HL’s Newcomer of the Year as well to the first team All-League, while sophomore Amanda Cornwell garnered second team accolades.

Poole joined the Titan Athletic Department as assistant women’s tennis coach during the 2007-08 season, and was elevated to head coach on May 4, 2009.

A product of Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Poole played collegiately at Eastern Michigan University until the men’s tennis program at EMU was discontinued. He then transferred to Chicago State, where he competed for just one season prior to returning to Detroit. Poole ultimately finished his bachelor’s degree in education at Wayne State in 2007.

The 31-year old Detroit native is addicted to the sport he knows and loves, and he traveled all over the country with dozens of junior players prior to settling back down in southeast Michigan. He has worked with a myriad of players at all levels during the past 10 years, with expe-rience at Grosse Pointe’s Hunt Club, Wimbledon Racquet Club and Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.

“Sam has a unique coaching style, and he pushes our student-athletes from start to finish in every practice,” former UDM head coach Daron Montgomery noted. “He brings energy, enthusiasm and passion to the program. I think he has a lot to offer to the sport of college tennis. His local roots make him a perfect fit for Titan tennis.”

Poole, who teaches full-time at Detroit’s Midtown Acad-emy, is one of three children. He has a brother (Kristo-pher) and a sister (Samantha).

One of the most highly decorated players in Horizon League his-tory returned to Detroit, this time as a coach as Pjotrs Necajevs was named a graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams for the 2010-11 campaign.

“Pjotrs was a great player for us, but it was not just about the results he gave us on the court. He really helped our young players grow and get ready for the college game during his two years and to be able to keep him around is great for the program,” said men’s head coach Grant Asher.

Necajevs is involved in on-court coaching as well as providing assis-tance to both the men’s and women’s programs in regards to recruit-ing, practice schedules, travel coordination, budget and equipment purchases. He will also assist with day-to-day office administration

for both teams and help the Athletic Department in the areas of marketing and promotions, group ticket sales and assist with the department’s special events.

Necajevs ended his two-year Titan career as just the third player in Horizon League history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards after going 30-4 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in the conference as a senior. He dominated conference play again with six of his seven wins in straight-set sweeps. In his Motor City career, he was 55-8 in singles, all from the top position, with a 14-0 record in conference meets.

He was the team MVP twice and earned the 2009 Ti-tan Newcomer award at the annual UDM President’s Athletic and Academic Honors Luncheon. Off the court, he was a member of Student Athletic Adviso-ry Committee (SAAC), and earned academic hon-ors by being named to the UDM Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice as well as to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll. As a senior, he also received the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, which recog-nizes student-athletes who display admirable con-duct both on and off the courts.

Necajevs graduated from the University in May, 2010, with Bachelor’s Degree in Business and is cur-rently enrolled in UDM’s MBA program.

The Titans finished 10-12 overall last year and 6-2 in the conference and took down Green Bay 4-0 and Cleveland State 4-1, in the first and second rounds of the Horizon League Tournament respectively, reaching the Horizon League Championship match for the second consecutive year and falling to a tough UIC team both years. Detroit’s 2011 team features the return of last year’s Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa. Espinsosa went 12-9 in last year’s dual season, including 6-2 in Horizon League matches. Junior Amanda Cornwell led the Titans in 2010 with a 14-8 mark including a 7-1 confer-ence record to pace the team. Cornwell posted a 5-7 mark this past fall including a win in both singles and doubles against conference foe Cleveland State in the third of Detroit’s most recent four fall tournaments. “To me the fall isn’t about winning or los-ing, it’s about seeing who gets out of a match, whether it’s a win or loss, to see if they can handle the school, the traveling and just being a good student athlete here at UDM,” stated head coach Sam Poole now in his second year as coach of the Titans. Erin Weldon returns and will be the lone se-nior on this year’s squad. With 63 career singles victories, she currently sits in fifth place overall in UDM women’s history behind Maria Pandele (1998-2001) and her 77 total wins. Weldon, Cornwell, and junior Melanie Capuano are the upperclassmen representatives on the roster. Espinosa is the lone sophomore while three freshmen were added to the mix over the sum-mer and look to add depth to the lineup. Julia Fernandes, Raina Halabi, and Elena Strakhova are the newcomers to join Detroit. Poole is looking for them to be able to step in and for the returners to help the transition pe-riod.

“We have a big sister program where if you see someone who needs help, you pick up the slack,” said Poole. “There are new people you have to train and get implemented to the system, but I’m glad we have a fall season different than other sports to help. I think tennis is really special in that we can play three or four tournaments in the fall and watch and work with your team. The two things I enforce at the end of every practice in-clude being ready to practice and play hard and getting good grades.” The season will see the Titans play its home matches at the Franklin Athletic Club in South-field and also host a pair of April matches on the UDM campus at the Titan Tennis Complex (weather pending). Detroit kicks off its 2011 dual season Sun-day, January 23 at Michigan State followed by a match at Eastern Michigan before opening the home portion of the schedule on April 30 against IPFW. This year’s schedule will feature 22 matches with six at home to be played at the Franklin Athletic Club or at the Titan Tennis Complex on the UDM McNichols campus.

2009-10 Season Review Detroit ended the 2008-09 season with a school record 15 victories and the team’s first-ever ap-pearance in the Horizon League Championship match. UDM followed that up in 2009-10 and finished 10-12 overall and 6-2 in the Horizon League. Detroit started the year dropping seven straight and nine of its first 10 matches. The first dual win of the year came in the eighth match of the season with a 6-1 mark over Southeast Missouri State. A struggle through the next two match-ups brought the Titans into the conference season with Detroit dropping the doubles point at Wright State. However, the tables started to turn as the Ti-tans rallied to win five of the six singles matches and take a 5-2 victory over the Raiders. That day sparked the Titans to conference wins over Butler and Valparaiso before UIC upended Detroit 5-1. The Titans got right back on the winning path with two straight 6-0 wins against Oakland and Green Bay respectively, followed by a win at Milwaukee. A 4-2 setback to Cleveland State and 5-1 win over the Penguins of Youngstown State brought the regular season campaign to a close. The Titans won 7-of-9 to close the year and finish third in the Horizon League with that 6-2 mark. Detroit then took down Green Bay 4-0 in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament and won the rematch with Cleveland State 4-1, in the second round of the Tournament reach-ing the Horizon League Championship. It was the second consecutive year the Titans were in the final match and also the second consecutive year against UIC. The regular season match saw the Flames take a 5-1 win over the Titans and the championship game saw the Flames take the title with a 4-0 win leaving the Titans still in search of their first ever women’s tennis Horizon League Championship. In the 2009 Championship, UIC won 4-1. Two newcomers made an immediate impact helping UDM rise back to the top of the conference in HL Newcomer of the Year and first team All-Horizon League selection Carolina Salas Espinosa and second team All-HL honoree Amanda Corn-well.

Tennis Facilities The outdoor home of the Detroit Titans opened on Sept. 13, 2008 when the new Titan Tennis Complex, located imme-diately south of Calihan Hall, was unveiled.

Nearly a year after Titan Field was rennovated, Detroit welcomed a new varsity tennis complex, featuring eight hard courts and a viewing pavilion, as well as an additional athletic field.

The 4,000-square-foot cov-ered pavilion is located at the north end of the facility. The venue also serves as home for the University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy boy’s tennis team, as U of D Jesuit was a major financial contribu-tor to the overall project.

A formal blessing of the new tennis com-plex was conducted by UDM President Fr. Gerard Stockhausen, S.J. In attendance were members of the women’s and new men’s ten-nis teams, their families, UDM staff and many of the donors who made construction of the

new facility possible. The complex features eight varsity courts and a 4,000-square-foot viewing pavilion. TMP Architecture (Bloom-field Hills) served as the lead architect for the project, while The Monahan Company (East-pointe) served as general contractor.

The Franklin Athletic Club is considered one of the premier tennis and fitness clubs in the country. There are thirteen air-conditioned indoor courts are available year-round and pro-grams offerred for the begin-ning player through the ad-vanced national level player. Franklin has received inter-national recognition not only for its facility, but also for its world renowned teaching staff, which includes Titans men’s head coach Grant Asher who teaches professionally at the indoor club.

Entering its 32nd sea-son of operation in the 2010-11 academic year, the Horizon League con-tinues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading ath-letics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the develop-ment of student-athletes as leaders and role models.

The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a sto-ried tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler Uni-versity, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chi-cago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State Univer-sity and Youngstown State University.

The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic perfor-mance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-ath-lete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, ex-cellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross coun-try, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, in-door track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swim-ming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volley-ball).

The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, wom-

en’s golf. The Horizon League is headquar-tered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Av-enue), located a block from Lucas Oil Sta-dium and just minutes from Conseco Field-house, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Mid-western City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current mem-bers Butler and Loyola as well as the Uni-versity of Evansville, Oklahoma City Uni-versity, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.

Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with North-ern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Val-paraiso in 2007.

On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League un-veiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of be-ing one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on en-hancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s 2010 NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Duke, 61-59. The Horizon League has compiled a 10-7 record in the past five years in the NCAA tournament, ranking sixth among all collegiate conferences for winning percent-age.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team be-came the league’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010 with Cleveland State receiving the automatic nod. The Phoenix knocked off No. 5 seed Virginia in the first round before falling to Elite Eight participant Iowa State, 60-56.Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last eight years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, includ-ing more than 600 for the last four semes-ters. Twenty-seven student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Aca-demic All-District teams in 2009-10, while 10 earned Academic All-America honors.

COMMUNITY SERVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Hori-zon League has secured a well-earned repu-tation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, mu-sic and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners rec-ognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day.

The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advi-sory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in India-napolis during its annual summer meeting.

In addition, sev-eral League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samari-tan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball champi-onship.On campus, stu-dent-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighbor-hood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister pro-grams and more.

SPORTSMANSHIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of em-phasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coach-es, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each sea-son by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMOGRAPHICSHorizon League institutions boast a com-bined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the na-tion’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

VISIBILITYThe Horizon League has enhanced its me-dia visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college bas-ketball’s premier in-season events.

The main goal of the Strength and Condi-tioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respected sport. This will be ac-complished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the pos-sibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation.

Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the in-tensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to deter-mine the success of the program.

The strength and conditioning staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated at-tendance, evaluation, and comments on a

regular basis about each student-ath-lete. Com-munication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field.

The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Fitness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervi-sion of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team.

In the past three years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Olym-pic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and imple-mented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover

from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

The UDM strength and con-ditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-ath-letes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as ma-jor league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 stu-dent-athletes.

The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and reha-bilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a fam-ily practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthope-dic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Pat-rick Jean-Pierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage.

The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirl-pools, and rehabilitative equipment.

The goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department are to prevent athletic injuries as best pos-sible through effective injury prevention programs, and

to return injured athletes to their previ-ous com-petitive status in the safest and quick-est manner possible.

When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of De-troit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competi-tion is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Develop-ment, one of the first of its kind, offers pro-grams for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the pro-grams offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All fresh-man and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to col-lege. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress manage-ment, study skills and the importance of good

nutritional habits.

Another ex-ample of Detroit’s com-mitment to its student-ath-letes’ academ-ic excellence is the Ath-letic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff care-fully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has eve-ning hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-ath-letes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA.

The University of Detroit Mercy is commit-ted to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regula-tions and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University.

The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our in-stitution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

Titan Hall Of FameUDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, follow-ing the 10 latest addi-tions made on Home-coming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.

The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The induct-ees included two of the Titans’ former bas-ketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Ad-ditionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner.

Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.

Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity sea-sons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring.

The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience capti-vated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans.

The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Athletic DirectorKeri Gaither was appoint-ed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007.

Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, wom-en’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her first year,

Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department and direct-ed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track. Gaither also led a successful fundraising campaign for the renova-tion of the men’s basketball office suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass practice field for soccer and lacrosse.

Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong lead-ership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007.

Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host insti-tution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ulti-mate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addi-tion to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field.

For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also super-vised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Inter-collegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administrator and director of business operations.

As a current member of the Horizon League’s Execu-tive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the finance and television committees. She is also the council’s liai-son to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steer-ing Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Wel-fare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member.

Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Pro-gram Development Sub-committee.

Gaither participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future events.

In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the criti-cal shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leader-ship training and skills development experience.

Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercol-legiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, National Association of Colle-giate Directors of Athletics and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association.

She currently serves on the NCAA’s the Minority Op-portunities and Interests Committee as well as the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Program-ming Board. This award was presented for her out-standing contribution toward the growth and develop-ment of students as the director of athletics at UDM.

Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts de-gree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award.

Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior, who is also Detroit’s fencing team, and Kennedy (12).

Titan Points Of PrideTITANS RECEIVE HIGH MARKS IN LATEST NCAA’S APR REPORTNo less than eight Titan athletic teams brought home perfect scores in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate report issued in June for 2008-09.

At the same time, every one of Detroit’s varsity teams registered a multi-year APR above the minimum standard (925) established by the NCAA.
