AUGUSTANAADMINISTRATION

ROB OLIVERPRESIDENT

When the board of trustees announced its decision to hire Robert C. Oliver as Augustana's 23rd president, the campus and Sioux Falls com-munities' response was predictably and overwhelmingly positive. Oliver was no stranger to either community, and his leadership and passionfor life and learning are hallmarks of his career.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Oliver attended public schools and entered the University of South Dakota in 1971. He obtained a bachelor’s in eco-nomics in 1975 and, while employed by Norwest Bank in Rapid City, began coursework to receive his master’s of business administration in1977.

As Norwest Bank completed its transition to becoming Wells Fargo & Co., Oliver continued his progression through a variety of positionswith the firm. He has experience as a personal banker and commercial banker and became manager of the business banking department inSioux Falls. In 1987, Oliver was named president of the Sioux Falls market banks. He expanded the operations of the then Norwest Bankfranchise in Sioux Falls to include 16 locations. In 1999, he was named southeast district president, responsible for 27 banking locations in 13communities in southeast South Dakota and southwest Minnesota.

Oliver’s "free time" during his years at the bank included coursework at The Stonier Graduate School of Banking. ACADEMIC SUCCESS

AUGUSTANA STUDENT-ATHLETES benefit from a robust, liberal-arts education that prepares them well for endeavors beyond their un-dergraduate degrees. Student-athletes under head coach Tom Billeter have enjoyed successful careers as entrepreneurs, doctors, professors and investors--to namea few. Many alumni go on to earn advanced degrees. The men’s basketball program at Augustana has produced five Academic All-America selections, while count-less others have been deemed academic all-conference. Vikings are more than athletes.

NORTHERN SUN INTERCOLLEGIATE CONFERENCE

From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwest col-leges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II.

The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State, Minnesota State, MSUMoorhead, St. Cloud State , Minnesota Duluth and Winona State signedon as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today.

Southwest Minnesota State was added in 1969, followed by Northern State in 1978, Wayne State in 1998, Concordia and Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the U-Mary and UpperIowa in 2006, and Augustana in 2008.

MSU, SCSU and UMD later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. Minnesota-Morris and Michigan Tech were once part ofthe NSIC family as well. In July 2012, the NSIC will again expand with the addition of Minot State and the Sioux Falls, bringing the league to 16 members for the 2012-13academic season.

In 1992, the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the North-ern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979.

Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent rolesin the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and capturedseveral NAIA teams and individual championships.

The NSIC celebrates its 80th season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning nine national titles in the last six years. The WSU men claimedNCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAAII record of 57 consecutive victories.

CU launched an ongoing streak of four consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008, the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season open-ing loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of74 straight matches. In 2010, the Golden Bear extendeds that win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record be-fore ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title.

In a most surprising run, UMD completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholar-ships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and No. 3 Northwest Missouri State. Two years later in 2010, the Bulldogsrepeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with un-defeated records.

MSU added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 vic-tory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game.

Since 2000, the NSIC has also participated in the Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the high-est-finishing teams from the NSIC and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected for the NCAADivision II football playoffs. WSU defeatedMissouri Western State 43-41 in triple overtime, the Warriors first-ever postseason win since 2000.

In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash nationally as well, collecting a batch of individual titles. CU setter Maggie McNamara was honored as the NCAADivision II Honda Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latest NSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors.

The NSIC has also had three athletes awarded the NCAA Elite 88 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average partici-pating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships. Earning the award were Kendra Huettl (MSU, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana, Cross Coun-try, 2010) and Lauren Brown (WSU, Outdoor Track and Field, 2010).

Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by at-tending these colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, in-deed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.

MEN’S BASKETBALL FACILITIES

Located at the intersection of 33rd Street and Grange Avenue, the Elmen Center opened in February 1989. It is the hub for Augustana’s athletic programs butis also the site of numerous school and community cultural gatherings.

Each year the facility is host to more than 100 events. Included are Augustana men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling competitions. Music pro-grams, youth rallies, lectures, swim meets, youth camps, clinics and high school basketball tournaments also appear on the calendar.

The Elmen Center serves as the core facility for the campus recreational sports and fitness activities. The 81,000-square-foot facility is available more than 110hours each week for a variety of recreational activities.

Augustana students, staff and faculty may take advantage of a 25-yard swimming pool, two racquetball courts, the Hall Sports Forum, six locker rooms, class-rooms, a high-tech training facility and a multi-purpose/wrestling room that also serves as a venue for aerobic dance and martial arts.

The 4,000-seat Hall Sports Forum features a 27,000-square-foot performance area and a state-of-the art 176-yard running track, long jump pit, batting cage andfour multi-use courts. The new Robbins Pulastic SP sports floor, installed in 2004, was the first of its type in the area.

Since the summer of 2008, the Hall Sports Forum has undergone more than $315,000 in upgrades. During the summer of 2008 the basketball/volleyball play-ing court was repainted with the new Viking and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference logos. Courtside chairs were also refurbished to include the newViking logo. New bleachers were installed in 2010, and the lighting was upgraded in 2011.

In 2000, the Elmen Center hosted the NCAA Division II Volleyball Elite 8 national tournament. Since 1995, the Boe Forum on Public Affairs has been held inthe Elmen’s Hall Sports Forum, featuring world leaders including Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, President George H.W. Bush, Vice President AlGore, Queen Nore of Jordan, Mexico President Vicente Fox and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Impetus for construction of the Elmen Center was provided by the generosity of Bob and Rita Elmen, Jim and Eloise Elmen and Bill and Irene Hall. Bob Elmengraduated from Augustana in 1952 and Jim in 1960.

The Elmens and Halls all are recipients of the Tuve Award. Named for Anthony G. Tuve, Augustana’s president from 1890 to 1916, the award recognizes vi-sionary, forward-thinking, generous individuals who have reached the level of $100,000 in charitable gift support to the College.
