Value of the Month - Democracy

We continue to have a busy start to the year, planning, organising and implementing routines and programs. Classes have settled well and teachers are reporting a really positive start to their years. We were so pleased that so many people could attend the meet the teacher night last week. Thank you for your interest and support around class programs for your children. Our aim is always to inspire our students, recognise their individual needs and interests and improve their learning outcomes to become the independent and effective citizens of tomorrow. Many of our students were inspired by our NRL program over the last several weeks. Monday’s assembly was a culmination of learning some new skills and identifying ways to be healthy.

SRC Our SRC group met this week to bring their ideas for discussion and make some decisions on behalf of the other students across the school. We discussed the SRC role in the school and our responsibilities, including our sponsored student from Ecuador, Lidia. We were keen to find fun ways to further finance our commitment to Lidia and a Mufti Day will be outlined shortly in the newsletter. The students brought with them some excellent ideas for fundraising and ideas to further improve Maraylya Public School.

Start Smart – Financial Literacy Our Years 1 – 6 students were again involved in the Start Smart program offered by the Commonwealth Bank. This was an opportunity to discuss how quickly savings can add up to a large amount and how our saving goals can be achieved.

Catholic Scripture Thank you to Mrs Monica Ponturo who has kindly volunteered to take on the catholic scripture classes while Mrs Weisemes is away. We thank her for her time towards this program during this period.

Meet the Teacher Night + Welcome Barbecue Thanks to everyone who was able to join us for the welcome barbecue last Friday night. It was a successful night, attended by many of our families. Thanks to all of P & C volunteers for their time and organisation of the barbecue and our staff for running their evening information sessions. Easter Hat Parade Our Easter Hat Parade will take place on Thursday 2nd April from 11.15. We envisage our neighbours at MELC joining us as well along with our families. Hopefully we can talk Mrs Mackey into another ‘Bird Dance’. ANZAC CENTENARY SERVICE Mrs Mackenzie and our student leaders will host a small yet important service to mark the centenary of ANZAC. This will take place on Friday 24th April from 10.30am. Our families are welcome to join us. PARKING - NEICH RD Parents are reminded to be aware of residents’ access driveways when parking in Neich Road waiting to collect students. We have had incidents of blocked driveways during our peak times, which is frustrating for our neighbours. Please use the extensive parking further along Neich Road if necessary. Concrete Thanks! Last weekend several of our families provided their time and expertise to lay concrete to extend our assembly area. Mr O’Brien and his workers Troy and Harley, Mr Carpinato, Mr Belamy and ‘Couto’. Further thanks to …..

P F Formations at Maroota for their donation of concrete One Steel at McGraths Hill for the steel reinforcement.

CLASS NEWS

K Kindy students have made an excellent start to the year. They are learning the routines of the classroom and the school with a little help from their friendly Year 6 buddies! Last week in class, Kindy LOVED reading the book “In a dark, dark wood” – a traditional tale. Our favourite part of the book was the last page… where we got to meet… A GHOST!!! This started Kindy talking about what we are scared of and how our faces and bodies change when we get scared. We decided to draw and paint ourselves looking REALLY scared… big eyes, screaming mouths and wild hair! We used oil pastels, black sharpies and edicol dye to create these amazing masterpieces.

Cody Nicholas Terrance We created the wild hair by dabbing paint on the scalp, then blowing it away from the face using a straw. We love creating art and can’t wait to show you more!

1 In science, Year 1, have enjoyed finding mini beasts in our school playground and we are learning about mini beasts in class. We have learnt factual information such as “only female wasps can sting” and “bees can only sting us once”. We have learnt to sketch with soft lead pencils in art. We used shading on our drawings of snails.

In maths we have been learning our ‘friends of ten’. 2 + 8 = 10, 4 + 6 = 10. We have been talking about clocks and we have been reading the o’clock time on an analogue clock. We wish to thank all the wonderful parents who are coming in to the classroom to help us in reading groups each morning.

2/3 Thank you to all the parents who came to the “Meet the Teacher” night on Friday. The class have enjoyed having AFL for the last few weeks, as well as Ty’s Fitness Program. They enjoyed Startsmart this week and have CPR next week. We have been reading and learning about many different animals in the world that are endangered. Year 2/3 has been using information we have gained from the texts to write reports on the animals. In craft we have been learning origami. Our whales look fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3/4 Welcome back everyone, I hope you have all had a very restful holiday. Our English study for this term is ‘Belonging’, we have read 2 books ‘Belonging’ and ‘My Place’. Both these books illustrate the concept of belonging. For the last 4 weeks we have been learning how to write expositions in preparation for NAPLAN next term. Our science topic for this term is ‘Melting Moments’ and we have already learnt that when heat is added to some objects they change form and state. NRL was great during the last few weeks, they learnt some new ball skills. Maths has been exploring new strategies to add and subtract, a little challenging but I am sure we will get the hang of it.

5/6 Students have commenced units of work with a great sense of purpose. Students will be working on an English and HSIE unit focussing on ANZAC. This topic has been really well received and the students are enjoying learning about this important time in Australia’s history. The centenary of this event is a perfect time to explore how this event and other similar events have affected the Australian identity. Our current text “1915”, by Sally Murphy, is a story of a school teacher who signs up to fight in WW1.

Students have been collecting photographs of life in Australia in 1915. They will be commencing their assignment work next week about particular soldiers who were part of the ANZAC campaign.
