Even in California, where earthquake anxiety fuels movies like ‘San Andreas,’ few homeowners carry quake insurance. A still smaller percentage strengthen their homes, although retrot typically costs only about 1% of the home value. Stein and Sevilgen believe the public is slipping into deep denial. Temblor’s goal is not to scare, soothe or snow people, but rather let them learn the seismic risk of their home, and what they can do to reduce it. In October, Temblor launched its mobile-friendly web app, as well as a blog to provide insights about recent quakes and discoveries. It now has 3,000 registered users. Temblor uses the best publicly available data and methods to frame seismic risk of your home in dollars and safety; it is ad-free and free for non-commercial use, and covers the coterminous U.S. Temblor has been gaining visibility and credibility since its launch. It was featured in a S.F. Chronicle story, and in two KGO (Bay area) radio interviews. Temblor has been presented to the USGS, California and Utah Geological Surveys, California Oce of Emergency Services, California Seismic Safety Commission, UnitedPolicyholders.org, Association of Bay Area Governments, Applied Technology Council, and participated in the Great ShakeOut.
