It used to be a staple component of the Bordeaux Blend, but it never recovered fully from the 1956 frosts and its plantings there have fallen by 75% as growers have replaced it with more fashionable, and crucially, more durable grapes. It is either bottled on its own or as part of a Bordeaux blend. In Chile it is the 3rd most widely planted grape after Pais and Cabernet Sauvignon and tends to produce firmer, more tannic wines than its Argentinian neighbours. In Chile it is often blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot. • 2002 Valentin Bianchi Finca las Paredes, Malbec - -ArgentinaMedium-Full Bodied, Dry, Ready, but will keep, Malbec,13.5% alc.

From the cooler part of Mendoza, the Rama Caida estateis located at 750 metres above sea-level, and enjoys abenevolent climate with strong diurnal influences. This isan archetypical Malbec, flattering to deceive on the nosewith a savoury notes and hints of violets. Only on the backof the palate does the signature sweetness come into itsown, silky, hedonistic and rich.

Special price (for orders of 12): £5.17

    Bottle75 cl

    £5.75

2001 Weinert Carrascal Mendoza - - ArgentinaMedium-Full Bodied, Dry, Ready, but will keep, Malbec,14% alc.

Spanish colonial architecture sets an appropriate scene fora winery which has long cultivated classical values in itswines eschewing the monolithic with a vinous message thatowes as much to Bordeaux or Rioja as it does to the NewWorld. The Carrascal is a blend of Malbec cabernetSauvignon and Merlot that has seen two years in Frenchoak, a sojourn that has done little to undermine the qualityof the fruit but a lot to add an extra dimension of quality.

Special price (for orders of 12): £5.62

    Bottle75 cl

    £6.25

CHILE 2003 Montes, Malbec Reserve, Colchagua Valley - - Chile

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Ready, but will keep, Malbec,13.5% alc.

This under-rated, but currently resurgent, Bordeaux grapevariety has produced a concentrated wine packed withopulent bramble and blackberry flavours. It would partnerspicy meat dishes very well.

    Malbec

Malbec is the predominant red grape variety planted in Argentina, and with goodreason. Argentina, especially Mendoza, has become "the" region for world-classMalbec. The soils and climate bring forth an expression of varietal fruit foundnowhere else. It is a thin-skinned grape that creates a wine full of fruitycomponents. Its tannins are soft and sweet. It is also a grape of low acids. Theflavor of well-ripened Malbec is reminiscent of blueberries with hints of currantsand spicy white pepper.

Spotlighting the region's signature varietal, this Malbec has a ripe nose ofblackberry and cherry. Lush and rich mouthfeel with layered flavors of blueberryand spice. Enjoy it with grilled lamb or beef, or any pasta dish with a hearty tomatosauce. Smooth and ready to drink.

    BARGAINS Top

314575 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1998 $ 34.95Napa Valley (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Sterling Vineyards)This wine looks polished. Plum, black raspberry and oak lift from the surface. Thepalate is warm, soft fruit with precise tannins. It is supple and beckoning with a firmfinish.

745653 MERLOT/CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1998 $ 9.90'Le Palmier', Guerrouane AOG (D) 750 mL(Celliers de Meknès)Currants, minerals and the slightest touch of barnyard are surprising in a $10 wine. Inthe mouth, the wine shows currants and a bare touch of tannin on the finish. Buy it, butdo now lay it down.

    BEAUTIFUL WINES Top

350108 CHARDONNAY 1999 $ 18.55Okanagan Valley (D) 750 mL(Blue Mountain)Steely apple and pineapple aromas lift from the glass. In the mouth, this wine showsprecise, racy textures slightly softened around the edges through a lingering finish. Thedelicate fruit, oak and acid are well balanced.

972570 GEWÜRZTRAMINER 1999 $ 16.85Vieilles Vignes (D) 750 mL(Christophe & François Bleger, Prop.-Récolt.)Put this here or call it a bargain? The bouquet is balanced deep honeyed oak and litchi.Flavours are very pretty floral and perfumes. Although there is a vague sense offlabbiness about the wine, it remains precise and balanced overall.

727990 POUILLY-FUMÉ 2000 $ 21.25'Les Chaumes' (XD) 750 mL(Jean-Claude Châtelain, Prop.-Récolt.)you like the honeyed exotic fruit aromas, the balanced elegant and precise fruit on acrisp but velvety texture. You like the lingering sensations of wine made in the Frenchstyle of Burgundy, but $45 is a bit silly? Drink this instead.

343996 ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1996 $ 77.90Northern Sonoma (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. E & J Gallo)By informal straw vote, this wine was pick of the tasting. Gallo has done a very goodjob with the high end line of Cabernets. Drink this and life becomes a cabaret. The noseis polished and detailed with precise cherry, blackberry, herbs and a hint of tar.Although the alcohol is slightly hot on the palate and its' dense tannins need time, thewine shows cedar, black tea, spice and a lingering fruit finish.

  • 309625 CABERNET SAUVIGNON/SHIRAZ 1998 $ 34.80'Bin 389', South Australia (D) 750 mL(Penfolds Wines)This wine is a dense as hot tar. The nose conveys blackberries and forest floor-you willwant to climb into the glass. To the palate comes massive extraction with polished butdense fruit and a lingering finish with hints of mint.

    WINES TO AVOID Top

    979955 SAINT-ÉMILION 'JEAN-PIERRE MOUEIX' 1998 $ 18.00Saint-Émilion AC (XD) 750 mL(Jean-Pierre Moueix)This is a bland wine with no fruit.

745869 VINTAGE PORT 1977 $ 134.90Bottled 1979 (S) 750 mL(Warre's)Don't bother wondering what the original release price was twenty years ago, it willonly make you cry. The nose has receded but the flavours are still opening. They aredelicate and precise, exactly what you expect from a great vintage Porto. This wine isready to drink, but buy a spare bottle or two.

    WHITE TABLE WINE Top

542522 GEWURZTRAMINER 2000 $ 24.95Moira Vineyard (D) 750 mLVQA - Niagara Peninsula(Malivoire Wine Company)There is rich honeyed litchi on the nose. Flavours are smoky, dense and honeyed withgreen tea notes complementing the fruit.

953778 CHARDONNAY 1999 $ 34.95Santa Maria Valley (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Byron Vineyards)Apples and hints of butterscotch dominate the bouquet. Flavours tend to thebutterscotch and vanilla that come from good oak, followed by pineapple and coconut, with a touch of canned pineapple on the finish.

309591 SAUVIGNON BLANC 2000 $ 13.95Marlborough, South Island (XD) 750 mL(Shingle Peak)This is not a typical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Hints of anise wend through thehoneyed apricot nose. The wine is more like a Chardonnay in texture and weight, asthough the grapes got hijacked to California on the way to the bottle. However, there isa crisp, slightly honeyed finish. If you happen to be serving scallops in a white sauce, here is the wine.

  • 714212 SAUVIGNON BLANC 2000 $ 13.95Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (XD) 750 mLHermanus, Western Cape(Newton Johnson)This is Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, and good value at that.

932442 RIESLING GUEBERSCHWIHR 1999 $ 26.95(Domaine Zind-Humbrecht) (XD) 750 mLI would rather drink the Gewurz. From Christophe (Beautiful wines, ante) and save$10, but then I am not a great fan of the petrol nose of which this wine is characteristic.

966010 CHÂTEAU DE CRUZEAU BLANC 1998 $ 18.95Pessac-Léognan AC (XD) 750 mL(André Lurton)The average age of the vines is between 15-18 years. The white wines are planted to85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sémillon. For the nose, picture what your cat would smell like after rolling around in grass andgooseberries. That is what the wine is supposed to smell like so don't blame me if youdon't like the scent image. The wine is delicately dry and precise but I prefer the NewZealand style of the grape.

712364 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1999 $ 46.95(F & L Pillot) (D) 750 mLToasted forward oak leads the way through fine pear aromas. In the mouth is forwardpear and vanilla across the palate to a lingering finish.

739144 PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1999 $ 49.95'Les Enseignères' (XD) 750 mL(Domaine Roux Père et Fils)Toasted oak layered over apple and spice aromas is very attractive. The palate is crispbut smooth with spicy oak and a lingering finish.

944876 CHARDONNAY/TERRET 2000 $ 10.50'Chevalière Réserve' (XD) 750 mLVin de Pays d'Oc(Domaine la Chevalière)The crisp mineral notes combine with things slightly unusual to me, probably becauseof the contribution from Terret, an uncommon grape. However, at this price, try it!What you do is you keep a few bottles for when the food does not turn out exactly asyou hoped because you used celery salt, ground lemon grass or something like thatinstead of pepper. Then you explain that you did it on purpose to complement thesurprise flavours in the wine.

557264 CABERNET FRANC RESERVE 1998 $ 18.95VQA - Niagara Peninsula (D) 750 mL(Inniskillin Wines)Rich and dark in colour, the oak still pervades the nose and hides the fruit. The oak

  • overrides much of the flavour profile still. The wine is hard around the edges butbeginning to soften in the middle, where raspberry fruit begins to show. Dry, sweettannins cover a lingering finish. Give the wine time to relax and show off the good fruitand deft winemaking.

338095 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1998 $ 34.65Sonoma County (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Benziger Family Winery)The nose is warm and plummy, with a touch of cedar. Fruit flavours are warm but a bitimprecise: mostly plum, herb and sweet oak, all quite pleasant with a warm, beckoningfinish.

725150 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1998 $ 39.95Napa Valley (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Merryvale Vineyards)The deep blackberry nose shows some leather and mineral highlights. Herbs andleather open the taste profile but the blackberries and tannins kick in on the finish.

325779 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1997 $ 39.85Napa Valley (XD) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Clos du Val)The nose is black cherry with some dill and a hint of cardboard. The wine is dense inthe mouth with deep black fruit and a touch of mineral and mint. It warms on alingering finish. Instead of this or the previous two selections, choose the Sterling(Bargains, ante)

703850 'DOMINUS' 1998 $ 128.95Napa Valley, Estate Bottled (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Christian Moueix)Much of the fruit is still cloaked but the nose shows some through hints of smoke andtobacco. The palate is not yet showing although the balance and finish are. However, Idid not think it was worth the price. Instead of two of these, buy 3 Gallo.

219162 'SONOMA CASK' MERLOT 1997 $ 21.50Sonoma County (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Sebastiani)forward ripe cherry dominates the nose. The warm elegant fruit is well-extracted,complemented by soft, integrated tannins and a sweet oak finish.

713453 ZINFANDEL 1999 $ 29.90Continente Vineyard (D) 750 mLContra Costa/San Francisco Bay(Prod. & Btld. Rosenblum Cellars)Currants, green pepper, rhubarb and minerals show grapes that were not quite ripeenough when picked. The taste is better, with ripe black fruit and some currant to thepoint, almost, of being jammy. The wine lingers.

  • Paso Robles (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Eos Estate)There is focused fruit and a medium body with lots of spice. This wine needs abarbecued pork rib roast, bone in.

951202 PINOT NOIR 1998 $ 28.80Willamette Valley (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Oak Knoll Winery)The crushed violets and berries make for a pleasant bouquet. Aromas turn into flavoursalthough there is a bitter vegetal edge to the finish.

715870 MERLOT 1998 $ 28.75Columbia Valley (D) 750 mL(Prod. & Btld. Columbia Winery)Pretty black cherries and berries show on the nose. The wine has a soft approach withsupple fruit. Tannins firm but there is still a delicate finish. This is a good wine.

335513 PINOT NOIR 1998 $ 19.90Padthaway, South Australia (D) 750 mL(Lindemans Wines)Rich raspberry touched with sweet oak characterizes one of the few Pinot Noirs tocome from down under. There are very deep fruit flavours, full tannins and a longfinish, all touched with blueberry notes.

945295 SHIRAZ 1999 $ 15.55'Vat 8', Yarra Valley (D) 750 mL(De Bortoli)Oak, lanolin, spice and black plum combine for an interesting bouquet. The palate issoft and pretty with warm black plum fruit. Tannins make the finish a bit hot but thereis plenty of fruit to merit short term cellaring.

943787 SHIRAZ 1999 $ 14.95Clare Valley, South Australia (XD) 750 mL(Wakefield Wines)here you get minerals, currants, a touch of toasted oak and some plum aromas. Thewine is surprisingly plummy and jammy. Pencil lead introduces a warm, extendedfinish.

  • (Wynns)The nose is short order fruit: plums, currants and minerals. Warm fruit flavours arefollowed by lingering white pepper, all complemented by firm tannins, especially at thefinish.

981183 SHIRAZ 1998 $ 39.95'Dead Arm' (D) 750 mLMcLaren Vale, South Australia(d'Arenberg)The nose is very rich with black plum and berry and hints of oak. Flavours are denselyextracted, polished and potent. This is a very big wine, even by Aussie standards.

461368 SHIRAZ 1997 $ 64.45'Eileen Hardy', South Australia (D) 750 mL(Thomas Hardy & Sons Ltd.)The denseness of the colour shows the promise of the flavours. After an anise andblack plum nose, polished and detailed fruit on a medium bodied frame follows. Thefruit is etched against spice, with hints of ripe red berries showing through leathernotes. Frankly, however, I referred the Balmoral, below.

388918 'BALMORAL' SYRAH 1998 $ 59.00McLaren Vale, South Australia (XD) 750 mL(Rosemount Estate)This is a lovely wine, with warm, jammy fruit all polished and quite precise. It is lushand lovely, well enough balanced to drink now but potent enough to lay away andanticipate.

954222 CABERNET FRANC 1999 $ 22.75'Spitz', Coastal Region WO (D) 750 mL(Bellingham)A little too much vegetation is a problem on the nose. The wine is dry, balanced withplum and herb flavours and a good finish.

988246 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1998 $ 19.95Simonsberg-Stellenbosch WO (D) 750 mL(Morgenhof)Forward toasted oak aromas precede the black plums and cherries. In the mouth, theblack fruit is a bit imprecise for my liking, but it is quite extracted, with tea and pencillead notes.

961177 MALBEC 1999 $ 10.55Mendoza (D) 750 mL(Bodegas Balbi)here is another bargain. The nose evokes warm blueberry pie with some oak, currantand mineral. The wine is surprisingly soft and supple for a young inexpensive Malbec, with decent fruit and some tannins to the finish.

  • 'Cuvée Alexandre', Rapel Valley (D) 750 mL(Casa Lapostolle)The Chilean producers are trying to slip into a more upscale market, which meanshigher prices for wines they think are worth it. But, the winemaking has improved. With this Cab, you do not get the cachet of a California appellation, but I think thewine compares favourably with California Cabs in the price range. The nose showsplums, minerals, currants and slight oak. Flavours of pencil lead, spice and minerals arestill too dense for the fruit to show, but it is there, so the wine will benefit from shortterm cellaring.

931576 MERLOT RESERVA 2000 $ 15.80Central Valley (D) 750 mL(Vina La Rosa)Vegetal overtones compete with the currant aromas and the oak. The wine is still hardand dense in the mouth with a bitter edge to the tannins, but an attractive fruit finishholds promise.

717496 CHÂTEAU CITRAN 1996 $ 48.60Cru Bourgeois, Haut-Médoc AC (XD) 750 mLToasted oak and tobacco waft from the glass. Flavours of truffle, sage and mochaindicate a wine that needs some cellar time, even given the vintage. For the money, buythe Clos du Marquis.

733410 CHÂTEAU CLARKE 1998 $ 29.95Listrac AC (XD) 750 mL(Barons Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild)There is not enough fruit in this wine.

  • of fruit.

944199 VOLNAY 1998 $ 46.95'Les Santenots' (D) 750 mL(Domaine & SARL Vincent Girardin)The wine is deep and rich in colour. The nose is elegant oak, black raspberry andleather. In the mouth, the wine is rich in body and forward. It is still tannic but thatdoes not hide the deep berry flavours. This wine will bring out the best of a saddle ofvenison. Out of the three burgundies, it would be my pick.

738690 CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1999 $ 49.90'Les Charmes', 1er Cru (XD) 750 mL(Domaine Roux Père et Fils)As to bouquet, this wine offers pretty, subtle crushed blueberry aromas. The palate isdelicate, almost softly textured, but the wine remains structured, with precise berryflavours mid-palate and an interesting, lingering finish.

712083 VOSNE-ROMANÉE 1999 $ 42.85(Jean Philippe Marchand) (XD) 750 mLRaspberries, then blueberries with a hint of vegetal aromas and then some cola noteswill tingle your nostrils. The wine is quite big from bull, soft tannins. Although notfruit-driven, it has good balance and structure.

707984 MOULIN-À-VENT 1998 $ 20.00Aged in Oak For Six Months (D) 750 mL(Les Vins Georges Dubœuf)Pretty berries and a hint of cola show in the bouquet. The palate offers good extraction, plums and minerals. It is ready to drink and has enough stuffing to complement dinner.

719989 SAUMUR-CHAMPIGNY 1998 $ 10.95(Domaine du Bois de la Croix) (XD) 750 mLAromas are predominately medicinal alcohol, like a mild cherry cough syrup withsome vegetal and mineral notes. There are light cherry and herb flavours and the wineis ready to drink. It might complement breast of turkey.

955070 CHÂTEAU DE JAU 1999 $ 13.95Côtes du Roussillon Villages (D) 750 mL(Château de Jau)Cherries and a hint of dry herbs open this pleasant sipping wine.

931899 'INFERNET' 1998 $ 13.95Coteaux Varois, Estate Bottled (XD) 750 mL(Château Routas)The bright red label is the best part.

  • 968750 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 1997 $ 29.95Château de Beaucastel (XD) 375 mL(Domaine Perrin)While this is a pretty wine, at this price it should also have a brain…

708107 GIGONDAS 1999 $ 28.85(M. Chapoutier) (XD) 750 mLBlack cherry and tar make an enticing bouquet. The wine is silky but quite dry in themouth, giving a sense of refined character.

985804 AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 1995 $ 45.95'Ca'de Loi' (D) 750 mL(Boscaini)This is quintessential Amarone: smoky dried fruit aromas, and some chocolate hints. The wine is very dry and very elegant, giving the sense of its' power as a thoroughbred, not a quarterhorse.

985028 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2000 $ 8.65Lison Pramaggiore (D) 375 mL(Tenuta S. Anna)When you buy an Italian Cabernet Sauvignon, you get an Italian wine, not a Cabernetin the sense of the international style that has co-opted the character of local winesthroughout the world. That is a good thing.

931857 'VALLE DO RIACHO' 1999 $ 8.95Vino Regional Alenquer (D) 750 mL(Adega Cooperativa de Labrugeira)The nose is reminiscent of live wild boar and pepper. I liked that. Pepper and mineralsdominate the flavour profile, with tannin on the finish.

702761 'MARQUÉS DE CàCERES' RESERVA 1994 $ 32.30Rioja DOC (D) 750 mL(Union Viti Vinicola Cenicero S.A.)The nose is dried fruit and old leather. Unfortunately, there was a significant hint ofsour currant. Flavours of mature plum, currant, minerals and saddle soap arecompromised by hints of wet oak. The wine is still structured and finishes withflavours of candied cherry.

315838 'MAS LE PLANA' 1995 $ 38.00Gran Coronas, Penedès DO (D) 750 mL(Miguel Torres)There is too much tannin and not enough fruit.

403170 BRUT ROSÉ 1995 $ 69.90(Louis Roederer) (D) 750 mLThe colour of this wine is elegantly pale, almost with a tint of orange. The nose is thetoasted applesauce of a mature vintage champagne. A crisp firm structure and alingering apple skin finish complement apples and applesauce flavours.

A spicy, full-flavored wine, with good body, fruit and firm tannins. An engaging and strongfinish. Well recommended for ageing. D.O. Colchagua Valley.Download Technical Data

MONTES MerlotA young Merlot with some oak ageing. Elegant, refined and a marked fruitiness almost irresistible to Merlot lovers andto those who sample it for the first time. Strong, spicy black pepper, full of harmony and soft to the palate. Aureliodecided to blend 15% Cabernet Sauvignon with this Merlot, to better marry with the oak, and give structure andfinesse that will also permit long term ageing. D.O. Colchagua Valley.Download Technical Data

MONTES "Limited Selection" Pinot Noir100% Pinot Noir from the Casablanca Valley. With some aging in French oak and a very soft filtering, Aurelio wasfinally satisfied with this Pinot Noir. Being such a difficult grape to vinify, Aurelio believes this has strong varietalcharacter and will aim for greater complexity in next vintages. Somewhat darker color than the typical Pinots, it has adeeper ruby color. The aroma is that of a Classic Pinot Noir, with very floral notes with hints of violets and berries. To the palate, finevanilla tastes and a medium body. A very satisfying wine with long, smooth and elegant finish. No need to decant.D.O. Casablanca Valley.Download Technical Data

  • evaluated releasing a full Carmenère wine, as we have pure Carmenère vines, but after many combinations decidedthat this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Carmenère (specified as such in the main label) brought forwardthe best of both varieties. Aged in American oak and with only one soft filtering, it provides great value. With beautifuland intense ruby red color, it has a very elegant aroma with notes of chocolate, cigar box, coffee and also of vanillaand butterscotch. To the palate it is ample, full, of medium body, soft and generous, with a long aftertaste. Decanting isrecommended for at least 30 minutes. It can be cellared for four years or enjoyed now. D.O. • high altitude winegrowing district of Agrelo in Mendoza, Argentina. Located at 940meters (3,100') above sea level, at the foot of the majestic Andes, this unique facility isequipped with customized, one of a kind winemaking technology. It is the latest reflectionof Nicolás Catena’s ongoing quest to place Argentine wines among the best of the world.

The winery was designed to provide the most gentle possible handling of the grapes inorder to preserve the full spectrum of their natural flavors and aromas. Custom designedwide mouth tanks, mobile crushers and selection tables, as well as a robotic punchingdown and remontage machinery, allow for the maximum expression of varietal character.

When he was defining the architectural style of the new winery, Nicolás Catena wonderedhow he would manage to embody the uniqueness of Mendoza's wine country, nestled inthe foothills of the Andes mountains. A Mayan-inspired pyramid was his final choice.

Following in the steps of his mother Angélica Zapata, the local school's headmistress,Nicolás has always been an avid history student. In Nicolás’ mind, the monuments builtby the Mayans are clearly the most grandiose examples of Pre-Columbian Americanarchitecture.

The Catena Zapata winery symbolizes a family’s pride in its roots and a keen desire toshow to the world the uniqueness of Mendoza as a wine-producing region.
