    GRAND BURGUNDY OFFER 2009EN PRIMEUR

    3

  • 4GRAND BURGUNDY OFFER 2009EN PRIMEUR

After the frenzy of the Bordeaux 2009 campaign lastspring, the world has been waiting for the launch of theBurgundian wines from the same glorious summer. Thegood news is that the wines are fabulous and very fewproducers have caught Bordeaux pricing fever. The bad

news is that each individual wine is in short supply, given thefragmented nature of Burgundian vineyard holdings, so please bearwith us if we cannot supply all your needs. More wines are beingoffered in cases of six bottles this year to help spread the offering.

We have revived an earlier tradition by including the top wines fromChablis this year. New to the brochure are the delicious Puligny-Montrachets from Etienne Sauzet and a trio from GhislaineBarthods partner Louis Boillot, and we are also offering somecanny purchases from the 2009 Hospices de Beaune auction. Asever, there are many wines which could not be included here forreasons of space, so do consult www.bbr.com for the full selectionwhich includes some juicy web exclusives.

Throughout this offer we suggest drinking dates for each wine. Please note that these are only a guide as you will each have yourown preferences for the ideal moment to appreciate a wine, whether in relative youth or maturity.

2009 VINTAGE REPORT The summer of 2009 had a very different feel compared to its twoimmediate predecessors. It was not without problems, notably hailin May and some poor weather in July, but thereafter conditionswere as favourable as possible.

The flowering took place in warm sunny conditions, thoughsometimes very windy, in late May and into the very start of June, setting a likely harvest date of 10th September. Fine weather in Junewith occasional heat spikes turned much more variable in July with

some heavy storms, most notably on 13th and 14th July when over100mm of rain fell. This made life difficult for the vignerons as theycould not get into the vineyards, but fortunately caused no real damage.

The weather continued unsettled, with alternating hot and cool days, and further storms on 22nd and 23rd July. There were occasionalsigns of mildew but these were very localised. Otherwise the vineswere looking good and the grapes healthy, with vraison around theend of the month, when the weather was improving.

August was glorious, developing into a small heatwave towards themiddle of the month before the weather broke with a welcome storm(thunder and rain rather than anything worse) on the morning ofFriday 21st. Apart from a brief incursion from the tail end of HurricaneBill (25th and 26th), the weather stayed fine for the rest of the monthand growers could hardly contain their optimism.

The change of the moon suggested more unsettled weather but apartfrom a drab first week of September, it looked as if the fine weather hadreturned for the duration of the harvest. Picking started in the Mconnaisfrom around 2nd September, in the Cte de Beaune from the 5th and afew days later in the Cte de Nuits. It continued in Chablis and theAuxerrois through the middle of the month, in glorious sunshine

For both colours, the grapes were picked at good sugar levels butwithout fear of unsuitably high degrees; the typical profile fallsbetween 13 and 13.5%, not reaching 14% or above, and the grapeswere fully physiologically ripe.

The key to success in 2009 has been to retain a fresh quality to wineswhich are naturally rich. One technique for the reds which has beenwidely used is to incorporate a percentage of the stems duringvinification. Some domaines have always done this, the majority havetended not to. However there is a movement now towards some wholebunch vinification with stems, and it was widely used in 2009.

RED WINESOne is tempted to want to play down the hype surrounding the 2009vintage but it is hard to do so. While this is not 2005, a vintage ofunparalleled density and a firm tannic structure for exceptionally longageing, 2009 ranks among the very best vintages of recent times. Atharvest, the feeling was similar in quality and style to 1999, anotheryear where a large crop was able to ripen fully during a fine warmsummer. Tasting the wines, there is more of a parallel with 1990 butmaybe we should look as far back as 1959 for the best comparison, abeautifully ripe vintage that delivered stellar quality for both red andwhite wines. Time and again I find myself using the word graceful inmy tasting notes.

WHITE WINESContrary to initial expectations, many of the white wines in 2009 areabsolutely stunning. They began to show their true qualities only afterthe summer, when a mineral backbone appeared in support of thegraceful, ripe fruit. I was reminded of 1992, completely deliciouswines designed for the medium rather than the long term. There maynot be enough acidity in 2009 to make really old bones, but they willbe absolutely compelling in their first ten years, with the most excitingsubtleties of flavours, magnificently multi-layered, such as we havenot seen in recent times.

    KEY POINTS

This is a vintage both bountiful and beautiful, of good volume and great quality

The red wines are rich, ripe and rounded The whites are generous, and fresher than expected The prices are rather more reasonable than for top Bordeaux!

DidierSguier has been in charge since Henriot bought the Domaine in 1998 and they now own 12 hectares ofPremier Cru vineyards and no less than 16 hectares of Grand Crus. Everything is harvested by hand andthe Premier Crus are vinified in 40-50% oak, the Grand Crus receiving 70-80% without using new wood.

Chablis, Monte de Tonnerre, 1er CruA powerfully constructed wine that is still a littlebackward at this point but with real weight and greatpotential for the future, thanks to the fine, balancingacidity. Drink 2012-2016.79169B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 270.00

Chablis, Vaulorent, 1er CruThis vineyard is the best subsection of Fourchaumeand the wine is a beautiful pale colour with an almostenveloping rich white fruit behind, and peaches andpears in evidence. It is intoxicating at the front end, yetit remains precise; a magical bottle which will givegreat pleasure early in life. Drink 2011-2015.79170B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 348.00

Chablis, Les Preuses, Grand CruThere is power, weight and typical 2009 richness tothis wine, yet it manages to evade real heaviness. Itstarts discreetly, then bursts forward on the palate topresent a very broad front. This will certainly stand upto rich sauces and will clearly develop well from here.Drink 2012-2016.79171B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 480.00

Chablis, Bougros, Cte Bougerots, Grand CruThere is a huge volume of fruit here, though mostly inreserve, with perfect freshness to back it all up. Thehard work ploughing by hand in the vineyard has paidoff in the pure, piercing finish, making an exceptionallyfine wine. Drink 2013-2018.79172B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 480.00

Chablis, Les Clos, Grand CruA glorious bright colour, with a perfect nose, this is anexact representation of the vineyard. It is brilliantlychiselled with added 2009 succulence and, throughout the palate, this wine is infused with ripewhite fruits, rising to the majesty you would expect fromthe greatest of the Grand Crus. Drink 2013-2020.79173B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 570.00

    CHABLIS

Domaine Benot DroinWhen Benot Droin took over from his father Jean-Paul, he set about refining production in two key areas:yields were reduced to allow for greater concentration in the raw material and the oak regime wasreworked so that each vineyard could be treated differently according to its needs. This makes tasting thefull range of Benots wines, in his modern installation just below the slopes of the Grand Crus, afascinating experience.

Chablis, Monte de Tonnerre, 1er CruThis wine has an undoubtedly classy nose with realdepth of flavour. Smooth, harmonious and very muchin balance, this is a multi-layered and soothing winewhich will be best enjoyed in two to four years time.Drink 2012-2016.79163B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 186.00

Chablis, Vaudsir, Grand CruOne of the best wines in the cellar, this has depth andweight, with a warmth that binds them beautifullytogether and oak that does not show at all through thefruit. Drink 2013-2016.79165B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 297.00

Chablis, Grenouilles, Grand CruWith a brilliant warm spicy bouquet typical of thisGrand Cru, this 2009 is a rich, opulent Chablis with abuttery texture preceding a beautiful, classic mineralityon the finish. Drink 2013-2016.79167B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 354.00

Chablis, Les Clos, Grand CruThe warmth and the weight of the year are evident inthis wine with excellent acidity and a powerful mineralcore creating a perfect balance. It is reminiscent of flintyminerals and baked rich Madeira cake, and will bemonumental when it is ready. Drink 2014-2020.79166B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 354.00

  • 7Domaine Pinson FrresTwenty-five years ago the eminent Louis Pinsonpresided over this domaine and today you arelikely to be greeted by his great-grand-daughterCharlne. Time moves on and the wines are onceagain amongst the finest of the region. They havean excellent range of Premier Cru wines topped bythe Grand Cru Les Clos, with an intelligent blend ofbarrel and tank for the vinification and maturation.

Chablis, Vaillons, 1er CruWith a lovely nose of white flowers and fruit building toa fine culmination, this is a classical Vaillons, showingvery well indeed, with an incisive structure thatperfectly balances the fat of the year. Drink 2012-2016.79180B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 156.00

Chablis, Mont de Milieu, 1er CruThis wine has a stunning bouquet that heralds a reallysmart Premier Cru Chablis. On the palate it is firm, precise and brilliant with real flesh in the mouth but, above all, it has a lovely, fresh, mineral finish. Drink 2012-2017.79176B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 156.00

Chablis, Les Clos, Grand CruSome lemon-scented notes freshen up the scintillatingbouquet, while the core of steel which threads throughthe palate fully demonstrates its Grand Cru status. Thisshould make a spectacular wine in full maturity. Drink 2013-2018.79182B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 276.00

Domaine Jean-Claude BessinBody language can be misleading. Jean-ClaudeBessin does not have a marketing bone in hisbody, unless his doleful air is deliberate counter-propaganda. In any case, the wines speak forthemselves. He is among the rare few in Chabliswho prefer to pick their grapes by hand, whilevinification takes place in a mix of tank andbarrel. Here we select two favourites out of hisrange of wines.

Chablis, Fourchaume, La Pice au Comte, 1er CruThis is a special cuve from within Bessins holding ofFourchaume, boasting extra weight andconcentration. The nose suggests yellow flowers andmirabelle plums, making this a really concentratedChablis with fine balancing acidity. Drink 2012-2016.79158B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 168.00

Chablis, Valmur, Grand CruThe details in this wine are hidden as yet but the bodyis lovely, with a fine, deft balance and a beautifullylong finish. Given the overall weight of the vintage, thisis an undeniably graceful wine. Drink 2013-2018.79159B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 252.00

  • 8Les Hritiers du Comte LafonThe Lafon Mcon estate has really grown into itsown during the last ten years and Dominique Lafonneeds to do little more than offer guidance to histalented local team. 2009 looks to be the finestvintage to date and the wines continue to befarmed biodynamically and have organiccertification. New to the label this year is thebeautifully succulent Vir-Cless, which isproduced from several hectares of vineyards leasedfrom Chteau de Vir.

WHITEMcon-Chardonnay, Clos de la CrochetteThis is a wine full of sunshine and dancing minerals. Ithas great precision, refinement and is unquestionablythe best La Crochette yet. Drink 2012-2014.78227B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 138.00

Mcon-Milly-Lamartine, Clos du FourThis is always the most backward of the Lafon Mconwines. It has a scintillating stony backdrop, which willshow best after two years in bottle, and there is animpressive volume of fruit waiting in reserve. Drink 2013-2015.78226B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 156.00

Vir-ClessVir-Cless is known to produce really succulentwines, and this is no exception, but Dominique madesure the grapes were picked early to avoid any sense ofheaviness. There is a little fleshy richness on the noseand a really pure, silkiness to its texture. Drink 2012-2015.78230B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 156.00

Bret BrothersBret Brothers Domaine de la Soufrandire has been one of the most impressive producers in theMconnais over the past ten years and this year the two founder brothers, Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume, have been joined by a third sibling, Marc-Antoine. Work is about to begin to extend thewinery, not with a view to expanding the range in any significant way, but because more space isneeded to manage current production. The wines are certified organic and biodynamic and have theattraction of being immediately appealing to drink.

WHITEMcon-VillagesThis cuve is largely made from declassified barrelsacquired from grander appellations including Pouilly-Fuiss. Best enjoyed young, it shows a lovely contrastbetween soft-centred fruit and a crunchy structure.Drink 2011-2012.78546B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 90.00

  • 9Olivier MerlinThe Merlins brand new cuvrie was up and running for the start of the 2009 harvest and this made itmuch easier to manage than in previous years. Next year their fabulous-looking new vineyard that isplanted on the steep south-facing slope above the village will also come on stream, and everything looksset fair for a fine future for Olivier and Corinne which they have richly deserved, having created theirbusiness from a standing start.

Domaine Hubert LamyOlivier Lamy is one of the few producers who actually made less wine in 2009 than 2008, which isbad news for us as these are superlative wines. He started picking earlier than most, as he judgedeverything to be ripe, so there are no high degrees of alcohol here and the wines are deliciously fresh. This domaine remains the standout address in St Aubin.

WHITESt Aubin, La PrinceOliviers blend of village St Aubin Blanc is christenedLa Prince and fermented and matured in largebarrels. It has a broad base, yet is clean, floral and verydetailed, with perfect poise. Drink 2012-2014.78950B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 168.00

St Aubin, Frionnes, 1er CruThere is a touch of tropical fruit here which isattractively ripe up front, moving to a core of steel, making this wine approachable early but with thepower to last. Drink 2012-2016.78951B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 210.00

St Aubin, Clos de la Chatenire, 1er CruThis wine is noticeably more restrained than LesFrionnes with exceptional density of fruit and goodacidity, and carries the wood lightly. Drink 2013-2017.78952B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 270.00

St Aubin, En Remilly, 1er CruThis powerful wine is fleshy but firm and has afascinating, complex bouquet that includes touches oflicorice and greengage, and a truly excellent finish.Drink 2013-2018.78953B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 270.00

Jean-Yves DeveveyThere was a terrific moment for Jean-Yves in March 2010 when he signed an agreement to farm twohectares of Rully. Unfortunately, it had not yet been pruned and time was running out but 20 of his vigneronfriends, including several in this catalogue, rallied round and together they completed the job in a single day. This vineyard will come on stream next year while the Rully Premier Cru and Chassagne Premier Cru,missing in 2008, are back for 2009.

WHITERully, 1er CruFrom a single vineyard source, this has a veryperfumed nose with hints of ripe apples. With adelicious mid palate and great length, this will givegreat early-drinking pleasure but has enough grip tokeep for a while. Drink 2011-2015.76243B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 150.00

Etienne SauzetVeteran Gerard Boudot was supremely relaxed in his cellar when we went to taste the 2009s afabulous vintage from a domaine that has been on top form in recent years, while the next generation(daughter Emilie and son-in-law Benot) are steadily taking on responsibilities. Dominique LafonYear two of Dominiques own label sees a small cuve of St Vran replacing the Vir-Cless which has nowgone to the Hritiers du Comte Lafon stable, and the introduction of a red Beaune Premier Cru Les Epenottes(purchased wine in 2009, with the vineyard itself purchased for 2010). These rare wines are exclusive toBerrys in the UK, Hong Kong and Japan.

WHITESt VranThis has an opulent nose with touches of pear andfresh apricots but a tighter, more classically delineatedpalate follows. Give this another six months to settledown and it will drink very well from the comingsummer. Drink 2011-2013.78940B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 138.00

Puligny-Montrachet, Champs Gains, 1er CruStill slightly restrained on the nose, though lemon-scented notes are evident. REDVolnayA very moreish and typically sensual Lafon red, this isfine and fragrant with delicate colour and exceptionalstyle. Drink 2012-2016.78944B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 297.00

Beaune, Epenottes, 1er CruA gentle, graceful bouquet leads to very pretty, stylishfruit with a burst of greater red fruit energy at the backof the palate, making this a quintessential stylishBeaune. Drink 2013-2016.78943B 6 x 75CL PER CASE 6 165.00

Volnay, Les Lurets, 1er CruThis is an adorable Volnay, with beautifully plump, dark red fruit swelling across the palate and a very longfinish indeed. Drink 2013-2017.78945B 6 x 75CL PER CASE 6 255.00

Maison Roche de BelleneAlthough he is no longer with Maison Nicolas Potel, and indeed having left his name behind, Nicolas has retained many of his previous contracts to supplyhis new business, Maison Roche de Bellene. The formula remains the same: delicious wines from major appellations offered at compellingly competitiveprices. His white wines are now starting to compete with his reds.

Meursault, Genevrires, 1er CruThis is a huge mouthful, especially compared to LesChalumeaux, but despite the flesh on the palate itfinishes with a classical stony Genevrires character.Only two barrels were made; this is a really fineexample at an affordable price. Drink 2014-2019.78633B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 390.00

    CTE DE BEAUNE

Maison Joseph DrouhinThere has been very little shift in style at Drouhin, despite the change of generation from Robert Drouhin tohis four children, or of winemaker from Laurence Jobard to Jrme Faure-Brac. Continuity is all, and weheartily approve of the elegance and sensibility of the Drouhin style. The principal changes have come in thevineyards which have been converted to biodynamic farming under the watchful eye of Philippe Drouhin.

WHITEChassagne-Montrachet, Morgeot, Marquis deLaguiche, 1er CruThis is full and fat, yet still very fine. There is abeautiful mineral backbone which complements theoily richness of the fruit, making a very successfulensemble. Drink 2013-2018.79404B 6 x 75CL PER CASE 6 285.00

Beaune, Clos des Mouches, 1er CruThere is a great weight of fruit evident on the nosewithout any sense of heaviness. This is certainly ahuge wine but it is also a very fine one, with spices atthe front and an agreeable lemony finish. Drink 2014-2019.79405B 6 x 75CL PER CASE 6 297.00

Le Montrachet, Marquis de Laguiche, Grand CruA sensual and stylish bouquet gives rise to a feeling ofperfect harmony and balance. This stretches outmagnificently on the palate and the oak has beenperfectly integrated with natural acidity, keeping thewine fresh despite its awesome intensity. Drink 2018-2030.79406B 6 x 75CL PER CASE 6 1800.00

REDChorey-ls-BeauneWe have come to like this cuve very much as acheerful drinking red Burgundy which shows off theDrouhin style to good effect. The fruit is exuberant in2009, giving the wine a lovely coat of velvet. Drink 2013-2016.79407B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 138.00

Chambolle-Musigny, 1er CruSomething of a flagship wine from Drouhin, this isblended from a variety of vineyards to produce theessence of Chambolle. There is a mass of bright redcherry fruit, making it more succulent than usual in2009. Drink 2014-2019.79409B 6 x 75CL PER CASE 6 240.00

Maison Camille GiroudThere is a sense of everything falling into place here at this small merchant house, less than a decade after it was purchased from the Giroud family andDavid Croix was put in charge of vinification. He found his own style with the red wines very early on and has now also refined his touch with whites. Therange remains small and there is rarely much volume of any given wine, but the quality shows a significant talent at work.

WHITEMeursaultA fine and elegant nose tops off a richer body withlemon and banana-scented charm and grip. From ablend of vineyards that evidently harmonise well, this isa lovely wine. Drink 2013-2017.79262B 12 x 75CL PER CASE 255.00
