REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

As a child, I recall playing with my friends and pretending to

be adults. Often times, children imitate and admire the adults

they see. Society, itself, even markets to parents and their

children products that enable and encourage the child’s

imagination and growth. These products are sometimes

positive and at other times negative in nature. From candy

cigarettes, designer clothes, occupational tools and a host of

other things, children see and obtain messages that

encourage the child to choose a way of life that they hope will

give them satisfaction and riches. This choice is accompanied

with the natural desire to be older, wiser and independent. In

short, they aspire to be someone greater than they are at this

point in life. This is natural. In fact, it is in God’s plan that each

individual must strive to grow and become an even better

person. This can only be accomplished through the acquisition

and development of the virtues. Therefore, it is imperative

that parents today guide the exposure children receive as they

age and model the appropriate virtues and mature life-style

for imitation. How the parents live their life will have a

consequential effect on the future of their offspring. Our . . .

Reflections on the Readings for this Sunday

Deacon Rob

. . . . children learn through our own modelling and without

that instruction their life will be difficult and unsatisfying.

In today’s Liturgy of the Word for the Holy Family of Jesus,

Mary, and Joseph, this salient factor is addressed in all the

possible readings. No matter which readings are selected,

there is one paramount point resting at their very foundation.

This inescapable and fundamental component is simple but

often times omitted – God’s presence and Will is the substance

that binds and gives success. In a

society where the Divine Love is

fostered there is growth and life

because virtue accompanies that

Love; whereas, in a society where this

is omitted there is only decay and

failure.

In the first reading from the Book of

Samuel, Hannah, who is infertile,

prays to God for children. She pledges

that if God grants her this blessing,

she will dedicate the child to God.

After God grants Hannah this

request, she fulfills her promise and

takes the child, Samuel, to the

sanctuary where she summarily

dedicates him as a Nazarite – a

person consecrated to the Lord. This deep faith of Hannah

reveals her inclusion of God in her family and the rewards that

can be granted by the Divine. In short, this biblical account

reflects upon how the faith of parent and the inclusion of God

yields a wonderous result. This dedication and Faith enable the

virtues to develop. This inclusion invites God into being an

active participant in their life and brings happiness and

growth.

In the second reading from the First Letter of St. John, John

discusses the relationship of the baptized to God as His

children. God’s love for us and our response to that love

creates an unique and fruitful relationship that is unknown and

incomprehensible to those who rely only on the physical world.

As His children, we are expected to follow His Will and execute

it with the same faith that Jesus, himself, did. By being dutiful

children and including and sharing His love, we, too, will be

rewarded as Christ was. This inclusion is found in the Holy

Spirit who will remain in us as we remain in Him making all a

perfected Divine Family. This Family exercises virtues that help

all grow and become Christ in full stature. It is through the

assistance of all that the Kingdom of God comes to full fruition.

Finally, in today’s Gospel according to Luke, the inclusion of

God within the family is vividly portrayed. Before reflecting

upon today’s narrative, it is crucial to remember that twelve

years have passed since the birth of Jesus. During this time,

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph have lived a simple but virtuous life.

They have dutifully modelled their civil and religious beliefs for

the Christ. Likewise, Jesus has led a life similar to any normal

child. He has been taught tools of the trade of his father,

Joseph (carpenter), observed the Mosaic Law, and Christ lived

within a family that trusted in God. In short, the family’s core

moral values and virtues have been laid out for Jesus to see

and imitate.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus has gone to the Temple with his family

and relatives for Passover. The Lucan

account depicts Mary and Joseph

returning home when they realize

that Jesus is not with them. Traveling

in a caravan with relatives, it is not

surprising that Jesus would be

separated from them. With any child,

it is a “now, you see them, now, you

don’t” situation. Panicking, the

parents return to Jerusalem and

discover, three days later, the Christ

child in the Temple amazing all who

were listening to him. When

questioned by his parents, Jesus

responded he was just doing what His

Father expected. This statement by

the Christ Child clearly indicates his

intimate relationship with the Divine

Father as fostered in his human family. Interestingly, the

Gospel ends with Jesus, the Word, returning with his parents to

Nazareth where he “…advanced in wisdom and age and favor

before God and man.” This final statement reveals faith and

virtue continually developing.

Holy Mother Church emphasizes the importance of God and

family for a fruitful and successful life. She uses today’s

celebration to share God’s model for us. The Holy Family was

not an unusual and especially blessed family. This family

experienced everything life can hand out. They were pressured

and tested from the beginning to the end. As refugees, exiled

from their original home, pursued by authorities, and forced to

live a life of flight, this family continued in their faith in God

and the development of virtues. They experienced joys and

sorrows that many today would consider extreme.

Nevertheless, they never lost their faith in God and modelled

that same attitude towards their only son. It is this same

inclusiveness and bonding with the Divine that mortals are

called to witness and imitate, today. By following the model of

the Holy Family, society can bring blessings and miracles upon

itself. We can become a better individual, a better family, a

better nation and a better world if we follow them. We need

only to accept God, invite God, and develop virtues to have

that better world we desire.
