Re-Gifting When I was in North Carolina, my college-aged group would have a
Christmas party every year. There were three traditions we developed. First,
everyone would bring their favorite Christmas dessert and/or snack food. Second, I
would have them help me put up my outdoor Christmas lights (not their favorite).
And finally, we would have a gift exchange. But their gift exchange came from
something they were given last year at Christmas and didn’t use or used very little.
We called it a re-gift exchange.
This re-gift exchange was a lot of fun, and we combined it with the Mean
Santa option of grabbing someone else’s gift if you liked theirs better rather than
opening a new gift. It worked out well because college students don’t usually have
a lot of money and giving a gift they already had was…well, economical.
The Biblical model is a little different. You really shouldn’t give a gift to
someone that didn’t cost you anything. (I am not saying if you get something free
that someone else can use that you wouldn’t give it to them; it really isn’t a gift
from you in a sense.)
In King David’s life, there was a time when he really messed up with God
and knew that he had to offer a sacrifice to the LORD. We see in 2 Samuel 24 that
the LORD shows him this threshing floor owned by Araunah is where he needs to
build the altar. When David asks Araunah to sell it to him, Araunah offers it to the
King as a gift, but David replies, “However, the king said to Araunah, "No, but I
will surely buy it from you for a price, for I will not offer burnt offerings to the
LORD my God which cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and
the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. David built there an altar to the LORD and
offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Thus the LORD was moved by
prayer for the land, and the plague was held back from Israel.” (2 Samuel 24:24-
25)
As we think to give back to the LORD, the Biblical model applies to us as
well. Our gift should cost of something, please know however, that the Lord will
be honored by it.
There is one gift that we can give to others that did not cost us anything.
In fact, for many of us, it is basically a re-gift item. I am not saying the gift wasn’t
paid for, it’s just that you didn’t pay for it.
My sisters and brothers in Christ, this Christmas season, give the gift of
Jesus Christ to someone who doesn’t have Him as their Savior. God has given you
the gift of Jesus and has told us to give Him to others as well. A God ordained re-
gift.
Remember, we have two great opportunities this month to invite people
(other than to church, of course). Our kid’s Christmas pageant and fellowship
dinner is a great opportunity to invite someone to come see the program and share a
meal.
The second opportunity happens on the night when the most non-Christian
people attend a church service…Christmas Eve. Our Christmas Eve service of
giving gifts of talents back to each other is a great opportunity to invite an
unbelieving friend, (or friend that has been away from church for a long time.)
Give someone the best gift you have ever been given, give the gift of Jesus
this Christmas Season.
I love you all,
Pastor Dan

An Encouraging Word from Scott Thompson Just watching the news and social media it’s apparent all across country there are mixed feelings about the outcome of the election. No amount of logic or reasoning seems to making a difference. As I was praying, a couple of thoughts came to mind of past times. One was a time shortly after I went to work on the railroad. We had to use a “snow cat” to get around in the winter. I was a young Signal Maintainer and often got called for problems that turned out to be broken rails. When that happened I would have the Track Maintenance crew called to change the broken rail, but I had to stay with them to verify that was the problem. This meant I often helped Track Crews lift and maneuver rail by hand. We used two-man tongs to move a piece of rail that could weigh 5,100 pounds, and usually there were only five of us. It required all of us pulling and lifting at the same time to move the rail into place. One older fellow from Old Mexico would say “iguales” right before we lifted or pulled. It’s a Spanish word that means “same,” so he was saying “everyone at the same time.” Another time on a whitewater raft trip, we were instructed to pull the oars when the guide pointed at the right side or left side of the raft; it’s how we steered. This was the only way to stay out of the bad places in the river—steering together. I know as a country we will all never be on the same page at the same time. There are simply too many different opinions. As members of the body of Christ shouldn’t we at least try to be? Ephesians 4:10 talks about the Pastor’s responsibility, which is to equip the church and continues to say in Ephesians 4:13-15, “This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be influenced by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.” Some of the issues we face on ballots and day-to-day conversations, Christians have different opinions about. Let’s all remember a couple things; God’s opinion is the only one that matters. It is found in His Word. Our understanding of His Word requires prayer and God has given us a Pastor to help equip us with the tools we need. I encourage you to pull together for Christ—”iguales”—and make every effort to remember Ephesians 4:3 which says, “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” We all need to steer the right way and pull together for Christ!
