The full Sermon on the Mount is very challenging to anyone (Matt 5:1-7:28). For unbelievers in Christ it is a list of behaviors in life the way God sees them, and it definitely shows that there is no way to God except through accepting the forgiveness found in making Jesus Christ our Lord. However, what do we as believers in Christ do with the Sermon on the Mount? If calling someone a “fool” in anger is seen by God as something so serious (in danger of the fires of hell, Matt 5:22), what are God’s expectations from us? The answer is simple…obedience. Oswald Chambers wrote, “The teaching of Jesus is out of all proportion to our natural way of looking at things, and it comes with astonishing discomfort to begin with. We have slowly to form our walk and conversation on the line of the precepts of Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit applies them to our circumstances. The Sermon on the Mount is not a set of rules and regulations: it is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is getting His way with us.” It is my prayer that we all grow closer with and in Jesus Christ. I pray that we gain in the understanding and the practice of God’s Word. The difficult thing is that for all growth in Christ we must learn to obey Him. We often look at Paul’s wonderful words to the church in Philippi, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil 1:6), as a license to wait on God to grow us. It really doesn’t work that way. Our Father in Heaven will lead us, we must first decide to follow. If our desire is to grow spiritually, there are decisions for us to make every day. Chambers wrote, “The golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect, but obedience. If a man wants scientific knowledge, intellectual curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight into what Jesus Christ teaches, he can only get it by obedience. Intellectual darkness comes through ignorance; spiritual darkness comes because of something I do not intend to obey.” There are things in all of our lives that we have difficulty turning over to God in obedience. Our pride or our fears get in our way. There is a reason the Psalmist wrote, “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17) Give it all to Jesus Christ in obedience and be free to grow in Him. Dean: John Cox

Trust and Obey In the fifth chapter of Matthew, we find the beginning of Jesus’

Sermon on the Mount. The full Sermon on the Mount is very

challenging to anyone (Matt 5:1-7:28). For unbelievers in Christ it is a

list of behaviors in life the way God sees them, and it definitely shows

that there is no way to God except through accepting the forgiveness

found in making Jesus Christ our Lord. However, what do we as

believers in Christ do with the Sermon on the Mount? If calling

someone a “fool” in anger is seen by God as something so serious (in

danger of the fires of hell, Matt 5:22), what are God’s expectations

from us? The answer is simple…obedience.

Oswald Chambers wrote, “The teaching of Jesus is out of all

proportion to our natural way of looking at things, and it comes with

astonishing discomfort to begin with. We have slowly to form our walk

and conversation on the line of the precepts of Jesus Christ as the Holy

Spirit applies them to our circumstances. The Sermon on the Mount is

not a set of rules and regulations: it is a statement of the life we will

live when the Holy Spirit is getting His way with us.”

It is my prayer that we all grow closer with and in Jesus Christ.

I pray that we gain in the understanding and the practice of God’s

Word. The difficult thing is that for all growth in Christ we must learn

to obey Him.

We often look at Paul’s wonderful words to the church in

Philippi, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you

will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil 1:6), as a

license to wait on God to grow us. It really doesn’t work that way. Our

Father in Heaven will lead us, we must first decide to follow.

If our desire is to grow spiritually, there are decisions for us to

make every day. Chambers wrote, “The golden rule for understanding

spiritually is not intellect, but obedience. If a man wants scientific

knowledge, intellectual curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight

into what Jesus Christ teaches, he can only get it by obedience.

Intellectual darkness comes through ignorance; spiritual darkness

comes because of something I do not intend to obey.”

There are things in all of our lives that we have difficulty

turning over to God in obedience. Our pride or our fears get in our

way. There is a reason the Psalmist wrote, “My sacrifice, O God, is a

broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not

despise.” (Psalm 51:17) Give it all to Jesus Christ in obedience and be

free to grow in Him.

I love you all,

Pastor Dan

An Encouraging Word from Scott Thompson I had a great experience this summer. My grandson Wyatt came and stayed a week with me. We had fun working in the shop, riding the four-wheeler, and a lot of other projects. One thing Wyatt showed me was how to play a video game called “Hill Climb Racing”. It is on “Amazon Prime” so you can play it on the TV with the remote and we did! In fact, I still do! The object is to advance to different levels with whatever vehicle you purchase and whatever scenery you choose. You earn coins by the distance you travel. One thing I noticed about the game is before you can advance to the next level you always encounter a big hill. The hill has these characteristics: it is bigger, more difficult, and steeper the further you advance. I couldn’t help thinking isn’t that exactly what our walk with the Lord is like? As you move deeper and farther in your relationship with the Lord you always seem to COME HEADFIRST UP TO A BIG, HARD-TO-CLIMB HILL. The hills in my life have followed along these lines; they get tougher as you go, you have to go over to advance in the Lord, and if you don’t get up on the first try, God will bring you back to the same hill over and over until you do get over. Something I read a while back sticks in my thoughts, “We don’t grow in our relationship with Christ on the mountaintops, we grow in the valleys.” When you are down in the valley wondering “how am I going to get up this hill”, is when that little still voice says “my grace is sufficient for this one also”. We need to remember that it is God and him alone that gives us the strength we need to get up the hills in life. When we try to do it on our own power, we become discouraged and weary. 1 Peter 5:10 says, “In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and place you on a firm foundation.” How awesome is that. When you can’t get over the hill God will support and strengthen you…set you on firm footing so you can make it over the top. The tough thing for us as Christians is you have to be willing to let God help you! Most times we turn to God for help after all else fails! God has always been there for us. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Don’t be afraid for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” I encourage you to never lose sight of the fact “God is always with us and desires to help us.” He wants to help you get up those tough hills in life. Try asking his help before you try everything else!

Camp season is now over for our children and youth. It has been a fantastic summer for so many of our kids. They came back on fire to live out their “Fearless Faith.” Once again, Camp Christian has done an outstanding job discipling our young people. It has been fun for me to hear so many stories about people who have been impacted by this camp throughout the years. I heard from one person that they remembered being baptized at camp more than 40 years ago. I am sure that some of you have a similar story. Isn’t it fantastic that the camp is still making such a difference in the lives of young people today? I am excited to tell you that two students from our group received the Camper of the Week Award, one in the 5th-6th Grade Camp and the other in the 7th-8th Grade Camp. That means that next year they get to attend camp free of charge! We also had several receive scholarships for Summit Christian College as well as Boise Bible College. I couldn’t be more proud of our students and the witness they are for Christ. Please continue to pray for the camp and think about who we can take next year. I believe that the best years for the camp are still ahead. I also want to tell you about an upcoming youth event. On Wednesday, August 3rd, from 6:00 PM–9:30 PM, our youth will be hosting the youth groups from Clifton CC, Northeast CC, and Palisade CC at the Lincoln Park Swimming Pool. We have invited these other groups to join us to pray for the upcoming new school year, and to develop friendships with students from other churches that will grow as our students go through school. If you have a student, junior high through high school, who would like to join us, please call me and I will make sure they are on the list. We do need a head count by Tuesday, August 2nd, so we can let the lifeguards know how many we have. The plan is to meet at 6:00 PM at the park for a simple hot dog BBQ, then starting at 7:30, we have the pool area all to ourselves. I hope to see all of our students there. Finally, I wanted to start getting the word out that we are in need of a few more people to help in the children’s programs area as teachers and teachers assistants. If you are interested, or want to volunteer someone else, please talk to me as soon as you can so we can get you involved. We want to continue to provide a children’s ministry that is second to none, but we need help to do it. If you have any questions about children’s or youth ministry, I am available to talk, just let me know. Ministry: Western Colorado Christian Campus

Ministries is a collection of churches,

businesses, and individuals that have teamed to

support the students of Christian Student

Fellowship on the campus of Colorado Mesa

University. This involves three main areas: 1.

Encouraging and ministering to the needs of

these college students. Helping them to stand

on their own in a broken world. 2. Equipping

students with everything they need to discover

what God has for their lives. 3. Enabling

students to become leaders in their lives and

churches.

Prayer Requests: There are 10,000 young

adults on the campus of CMU. Many of them

are on their own for the first time and facing

pressures of every kind. Please pray that God

meets them where they are and covers them in

His loving arms. We are in need of people to

join this mission. Three areas of support: 1.

Prayer for these hurting students. They need to

know that they are loved and that there is hope

in a broken world. There is a great deal of pain

in the eyes of these kids. 2. Experience. We

need you to share your lives with them. 3.

Finances. We need about $50,000 a year to do

this ministry. Please go to the website:

www.wcccm.org and sign up for our monthly

newsletter and needs list. Dave has an office

here at ACC in the Activities Center work room.

“And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to

one of these little ones even a cup of cold water

to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his

reward.” - Matthew 10:42
