PASTOR’S NOTES

During one of our Thursday Men’s Group sessions I asked: “What’s the best Christmas gift you ever RECEIVED?” The responses were interesting and wide-ranging. Then I asked: “What’s the best Christmas gift you ever GAVE?” Many of us, especially children, know exactly what they want for Christmas. (My grandchildren had their list ready in September!!!!) THE NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE IS Friday, December 19

Please submit articles to [email protected]

Christmas Concert – December 8

Join us at 4:00 p.m. for sounds of the season as our Music Ministry presents an afternoon of joyous and sacred seasonal music. The concert will be followed by a beautifully-prepared Christmas Candlelight Dinner in Bercaw Hall.

Count Down to the Holy Land

In mid-February, we will fly to Tel Aviv for a 14-day adventure that will take us through the Holy Land and to Petra in Jordan. Thanks are extended to Sue Pohl and her associates for planning this very special tour.

2014 Offering Envelopes

Please pick up your envelopes in the narthex. Your generous offerings will allow us to meet the challenging, but realistic, budget adopted at our annual meeting. May we also invite you to consider a special “year end” gift to LCR!

Sanctuary Decorating

You are invited to assist with the decorating of the sanctuary on Sunday, December 1 at 12:30. The tree and wreaths are going up “early” to enhance the church for the Christmas Concert on December 8.

Family Promise

Our next Family Promise Program will run Tuesday-Thursday, December 17, 18 and 19 at King of Glory Church. We need meals prepared, as well as evening and overnight hosts. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Pete and Lori Brunner at: [email protected] -- or call the church office.

GriefShare

"GriefShare" comes to LCR in January. This is a program where you learn how to walk the journey of grief. Pastor Howell Foster has led grief ministry for over five years and now starts the program at Resurrection. GriefShare is where hurting people find healing and hope. We will meet Tuesday mornings 9-11 starting January 14. Join us -- and tell others. For further information, contact Pastor Howell at 714.504.9019.

50th Anniversary Fund

In celebration and thanksgiving for our 50 years of witness throughout the community, the Council invites the congregation to participate in this special anniversary opportunity.

Our minimum goal is $50,000! With those funds, we plan to install ceiling fans in the sanctuary, replace our current speaker system, add lights to the courtyard and give a gift to a new mission congregation in the Costa Mesa area.

While the official start of this fundraiser will not begin until January, some of our members may wish to give a gift before the end of 2013 for tax purposes.

Checks may be made to: "LCR - Anniversary Fund" Christmas Poinsettias

In keeping with Christmas tradition, we will be decorating the sanctuary with poinsettias on Christmas Eve. If you would like to make a donation toward the cost of the poinsettias, you may do so either by contacting the church office, or by filling out the insert in upcoming bulletins. Poinsettia plants are $8 each and will be available to take home after the 9:00 Christmas Eve service.

JOANNE'S BOOK CLUB

JoAnne's Book Club will meet on Tuesday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. in T-Hall. At that time, we will kick off the Christmas season by having "Tea and Tales". We will partake of tea and Christmas treats, and we are asking those who are willing to share a Christmas critique of a book, poem, film, or true-life tale. Or you may attend to just share the fellowship and good cheer. At this meeting you will receive the book, "Where'd You Go Bernadette?" by Marie Semple, which we will review in January. We hope to have Joy Martineau join us for this December meeting. Call Gail Perkins at 949.548.1044 for more information.

Friendship Task Force

The Friendship Task Force would like to take this opportunity to congratulate LCR's Japanese Ministry on their 25th anniversary. On Sunday, November 10, this anniversary was observed with a special service followed by a luncheon. From our sister congregation in Kumamoto, Japan, Pastor Tateno and five Ooe Lutheran Church members joined us for this special occasion. Our guests presented us with Japanese artwork which represents the bond between their church and ours. Mr. Taniguchi, the council president of Ooe Church, performed a beautiful song he composed for voice and guitar. The lyrics told of his faith journey. After the last service, a potluck was held in Bercaw Hall with more than 50 people in attendance. Pastor Adachi served as master of ceremonies. Pastor Carl gave a speech to congratulate Japanese Ministry. There was entertainment, heartfelt speeches and lots of love and laughter. As our Japanese guests departed, they praised LCR's hospitality and related that they would love to return next fall to celebrate LCR's 50th anniversary and especially the Japan Festival which will be held on September 20, 2014.

Friendship Task Force is already beginning to form plans for the Japan Festival, which will be one of the main events scheduled to celebrate our church's 50th anniversary. FTF has designated funds to help with such things as the expense of putting together such a large festival. However, in 2012, FTF committee voted to use some of these funds to do a much-needed makeover of the Bercaw Hall Women's Restroom. We have had wonderful feedback about the restroom from many women. Now we are focusing on the Japan Festival of 2014 and we welcome any donations toward making this endeavor a very special part of LCR's 50th anniversary. If you are so inclined, please put your donation in an envelope and mark it "Japanese Festival", then place it in the offering plate along with your regular offering. Thank you.

… A Huge Thank You to everyone who helped us make Christmas boxes for children around the world. Through Operation Christmas Child we were able to donate over 90 boxes for children in Mongolia, Panama, Madagascar, Ukraine, Philippines, Indonesia and Nepal. It is so heartwarming to know we are helping needy children and giving them things they may want and need.

We will be having Sunday school in December. Some dates to keep in mind--

December 15 Sermon notes for Middle School

December 22 children return to service for communion/blessing

There will be not be Sunday school on December 29 or January 5. I wish each of you a blessed Christmas celebrating our Savior's birth!

Bible Verse

“A Savior has been born to you, He is Christ the Lord.”

Luke 2:11

The Christmas season is here! We are hard at work on our Christmas

program and invite anyone in the congregation who is able to be with us

on Wednesday morning to come and hear “the angels sing”! You won’t be

sorry you took time out of your day. Our little ones will be singing 10

songs and you will hear the story of the first Christmas. The children will

be dressed as angels, shepherds, and wise men. The program is at

approximately 9:15 on Wednesday, December 18. I promise you, it will

remind you of the true meaning of this wonderful time of the year.

Thank you so much for all that you did as a congregation for our Silent

Auction. Thanks to your generosity we were able to raise about $3000

for our preschool ministry. That money will be used for paint, paper,

supplies, and equipment for the school. We appreciate the support of our

congregation. You are amazing! And I want to take a moment to thank the

preschool board who work tirelessly “behind the scenes” to make our

preschool so wonderful. I am so blessed to be working with such great

ladies. And thanks to my dedicated staff...what a talented group of

teachers we are blessed to have. They are bright, energetic, and

nurturing. We are having a wonderful year!

Things get so hectic this time of year. There never seems to be enough

time for all the cooking, shopping, parties, and events. This year I am

going to make an effort in the midst of all the holiday hustle and bustle

to sit back and think about the real reason we celebrate. Jesus is one

man who truly changed the world. More than 2000 years have passed

since the angels told of His birth and He is still the “Light of the World”.

He has come to lead His people out of the darkness of sin and into His

world of mercy and grace. He is the best present you will ever receive,

and the only gift you will ever need. Have a very Merry Christmas and a

terrific New Year!
