Resurrection

The Relevance of Resurrection

The truth of Christianity depends on the reality of Jesus’ resurrection,

which is the guarantee of our resurrection (1 Cor 15:12-23)

Resurrection

The Relevance of Resurrection

Paul offers two additional points:1. If there were no resurrection, it

is foolish to put one’s life at risk to preach the gospel (15:30-31)

Resurrection

The Relevance of Resurrection

Paul offers two additional points:2. If there were no resurrection,

life would be meaningless (15:32-34)

Resurrection

The Relevance of Resurrection

If there were no resurrection, our faith is FALSE (v15), FUTILE (v 17) and FATAL (v18)

The Relevance of Resurrection

An additional observation:

The Resurrection of the body affirms the ‘goodness’ of bodily existence

Resurrection

The Relevance of Resurrection

We were created to be embodied persons

Our created nature is ‘good’ (Gen 1:26-31)

cf. Are Christians Human? By Nigel Cameron

Resurrection

The Relevance of Resurrection

The Incarnation affirms the goodness of our embodied existence

The resurrection reaffirms this goodness

Resurrection

The Result of Resurrection

The Bible appears to teach a bodily, physical resurrection

What about texts that appear to suggest otherwise?

Resurrection

The Result of Resurrection

Cf. 1 Cor 15:44 where Paul refers to the ‘spiritual body’ (sōma pneumatikon)

Paul writes what is sown is sōma psychikon and what is raised is sōma pneumatikon

Resurrection

The Result of Resurrection

Cf. 1 Cor 15:44 where Paul refers to the ‘spiritual body’ (sōma pneumatikon)

These same terms are used in 2:14-15 as a contrast of orientation, not substance

Page 13: Resurrection The Reality of Resurrection Affirmed by multiple biblical authors

14The natural person (psychikos) does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual person (pneumatikos) judges all things but is himself to be judged by no one. [ESV]

Resurrection

The Result of Resurrection

Cf. 1 Cor 15:50 Paul says ‘flesh and blood’ cannot inherit the kingdom of God

Verses 50-53 make it clear that this term refers to the mortal body, not a physical body

Page 15: Resurrection The Reality of Resurrection Affirmed by multiple biblical authors

50I tell you this, brothers, flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. [ESV]

Page 19: Resurrection The Reality of Resurrection Affirmed by multiple biblical authors

There are many unanswered questions re the resurrection

We should be willing to recognize we cannot know all we might like to know

Resurrection

Page 20: Resurrection The Reality of Resurrection Affirmed by multiple biblical authors

We should focus on Paul’s final exhortation

Always do the work of the Lord

Know your labor is not in vain
