At its May meeting, the Congregation Council approved the Ministry Site Profile submitted by the Transition Team and has forwarded it to the synod office for the bishops signature. At the same time, they appointed the Call Committee, the group of six members and two alternates who will carry out the delicate work of reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and ultimately recommending the name of the person they believe the Holy Spirit has prepared to lead the congregation into the future. I want to say a few words about this next step. First, I want you all to understand that most of the Call Committees work cannot be made public. They will be required to maintain a strict confidentiality about the names they have been given and the specifics of the interviews they are carrying out. They will be able to issue occasional general reports on their progress, but that is about all you can expect to hear until they are ready to introduce a candidate to the congregation. This absence of details will likely be unsatisfying and even frustrating to you at times, but it is absolutely necessary for the integrity of the process. So please refrain from pressuring the Call Committee for information that they are unable to provide. They arent trying to be unnecessarily secretive. They simply want to be faithful to the guidelines they have been given. The next point I want to stress is the important part you can play now. I encourage you to be active in prayer all throughout this critical time. Call upon God daily for guidance and direction. Intercede for each of the members of the Call Committee by name, asking that they might be granted the good health and endurance they will need. And even though you don t know any specifics about who is being considered, lift up the potential candidates as they are being interviewed, in the hope that the questions and answers will yield the kind of information needed for a good match to be found. Finally, I urge you to extend heartfelt thanks to these members of the congregation who chose to involve themselves in the complicated tasks related to the move into LCRs next life stage: (1) The Transition Team for their efforts in laying a great foundation for this next phase - Laura Marroquin, Ralph Howarth, Dana Mullin, Ken Fukuyama, Kirsten Valenta, Jane Leipper, Vicki Kane, Nick Ross, Lynda Cruise and Linda Griffiths, and (2) the Call Committee Members and Alternates for the countless hours they will spend in listening to the Spirit – Kim Rice, Cherie Ludwick, Kirsten Valenta, Quinten Sharp, Greg Hansen, Glen Miller, Fumi Liang, and Kennedy Hoenig. All of these people have a great love for this congregation and incredible gifts to contribute to the goal of a successful transition. Dont forget to wear red this Sunday—June 4 is Pentecost Sunday! Pastor's Notes from Pastor Brad Stienstra

I am happy to report that Step 1 of the process which will result in identifying LCR’s next pastor has been completed right on schedule! At its May meeting, the Congregation Council approved the Ministry Site Profile submitted by the Transition Team and has forwarded it to the synod office for the bishop’s signature.

First, I want you all to understand that most of the Call Committee’s work cannot be made public. They aren’t trying to be unnecessarily secretive.

And even though you don’t know any specifics about who is being considered, lift up the potential candidates as they are being interviewed, in the hope that the questions and answers will yield the kind of information needed for a good match to be found.

Finally, I urge you to extend heartfelt thanks to these members of the congregation who chose to involve themselves in the complicated tasks related to the move into LCR’s next life stage: (1) The Transition Team for their efforts in laying a great foundation for this next phase - Laura Marroquin, Ralph Howarth, Dana Mullin, Ken Fukuyama, Kirsten Valenta, Jane Leipper, Vicki Kane, Nick Ross, Lynda Cruise and Linda Griffiths, and (2) the Call Committee Members and Alternates for the countless hours they will spend in listening to the Spirit – Kim Rice, Cherie Ludwick, Kirsten Valenta, Quinten Sharp, Greg Hansen, Glen Miller, Fumi Liang, and Kennedy Hoenig. All of these people have a great love for this congregation and incredible gifts to contribute to the goal of a successful transition.

Don’t forget to wear red this Sunday—June 4 is Pentecost Sunday!

Joy's Book Club

Joy’s Book Club will meet Tuesday, June 6, at 2:00 in T. Hall. This will be a special meeting since we will have a guest author, and it will be our last meeting until September 5. As stated, we will have guest author Judith Fabris who will speak about her book “Sargent’s Lady”. She will have autographed copies of her book for purchase, and will discuss her writing process. We hope former members of Book Club will also attend, along with anyone from the congregation that is interested. Judith was co-author on several books, along with the leader of the Book Club, Gail Perkins. Hope to see many of you there as we welcome this busy author to LCR.

Preschool News Bible Verse:

The Sovereign Shepherd…will feed His flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in His arms, holding them close to His heart.

Psalm 40:10-11

The end of the school year is such an exciting time! It is almost impossible to believe that the year is almost over! We have had a wonderful year here at RLP. We have all grown and changed so much with the passing of the seasons. Our little “lambs” who came to us as timid 2’s and 3’s in September have grown and matured into very confident preschoolers. Our pre-k children have become almost “too big” for our play yard and are looking forward to kindergarten in the fall.

The end of our school year is always filled with so much activity. The teachers and children are busy preparing special things for all of the dads, uncles, grandpas, etc., to celebrate Father’s Day and we are all looking forward to our “end-of-the-year” parties. I will make a special snack for everyone for the last days and Miss Jamie will be hosting a fun hotdog party after school on the 16

th. We are looking forward to summer

school and have lots of great activities planned—lots of water play, tents in the play yard, a beach day with umbrellas in the sand box, and little wading pools. We will have tubs full of water with rubber fish and frogs and nets to catch them with, bubbles, bugs, and dinosaurs. We will explore our yard with magnifying glasses and make “binoculars” out of toilet paper tubes. What fun!

We thank you all for all of your support. We are so blessed by this congregation and all you do to make sure we are able to provide a quality Christian preschool experience for our children. We are grateful for your financial support, the way you support our various fundraisers and, most of all, for your prayers.

YES, THERE ARE LUTHERANS IN MALAWI

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM) is one of the rapidly-growing churches in Africa. It was established in November 1982 by a group of lay persons, some of whom had returned from work in neighboring countries where they worshiped as Lutherans. It’s headquartered in Lilongwe, the capital.

ELCM has over 101,000 members, 400 Congregations and Preaching Points, with 72 Parishes and Mission Areas. Currently the Church runs 13 Primary Schools, 1 Secondary School in the Northern Region, a Lay Training and Vocational Centre in Madisi - Dowa. It also runs a Health Center at Madisi and Mobile Health Clinics (1 in each region) and 120 Feeding Centers across the country. Some of the programs also supported are; Malaria, Climate Change and Mitigation, HIV and AIDS interventions, Diaconal work in general, Health and Sanitation, Food Security, Water Provision (by drilling boreholes for wells).

Please contact Paul Coulter (714.469.1262) or Judy Wiggins (714.418.7373) if you would like more information about this Thrivent Builds project or Habitat for Humanity Malawi.

Our Habitat for Humanity Build Team – 15 Strong! Ages 16 to 74

Seems hard to believe that we’ll be in Malawi in a very short time! Making travel arrangements, completing registrations, paying fees, getting shots, etc., etc. have all been accomplished since January. We appreciate your prayers and good wishes as Judy and I depart on June 14.

Our Habitat for Humanity supported by Thrivent Builds team gathered on April 30 for the first time at build leader, Ron Baesler’s, home so everyone could begin building friendships and connections as we soon will work, learn and share experiences in a very different culture from ours.

What’s new with YOUth?

June 2017

The LCR Youth and Family Ministries had a wonderful month of May! Our Kid’s Club youth continue to enjoy biweekly meetings, playing games and spending time together in fellowship. Middle and high school youth participated in a homework night earlier in the month, coming together to have dinner and study, relieving some stresses of school. All groups participated in an activity in honor of Memorial Day, writing letters of thanks that will be sent overseas to active duty service members.

Our promoting 8th graders have been busy with their Confirmation projects, and look forward to

affirming their faith during the Confirmation service on Sunday, June 4. Middle and high school youth also participated in the LCR Work Day, pulling weeds, raking leaves and helping to beautify our campus. Connor Switzer represented our congregation as a member of the Pacifica Synod Youth Leadership Team at the Synod Assembly in San Diego this month. It is great to see our youth getting involved in the greater church world!

Youth and Family Ministries also hosted a fun reception following the Youth Concert near the end of the month. It was a beautiful day in the courtyard with refreshments, and a soft kick-off of our Sunday Funday Family Events!

Coming in June: Confirmation Sunday, June 4 during the 10 a.m. service. We will be hosting a preschool summer send-off on Friday, June 16 with a picnic lunch and bounce house for the kiddos! Sunday June 25 is going to be a busy day! Mark your calendars for our YOUTH SUNDAY during the single 10:00 a.m. service, and Sunday evening we will meet for our second Sunday Funday event! We will enjoy the kick-off of the HB Summer Concert Series in Central Park—details to come!

Thank you for your continued prayers and support of our programs! Nick Rice during Work Day
