director and executive operations director.”As the executive artistic director, Magyar steers and

shapes all the programs. “We may see anywhere from 300 to 500 different instructors from different disciplines come through our doors on an annual basis. We offer quite a bit beyond classes for kids,” he said. “We have an adult community theatre, classes for adults as well as visual and performing arts.”

Community Outreach ProgramsKVPAC partners with many community

organizations and receives support from several foundations. In 2011, more than 25,000 children, youth and adults participated in KVPAC community outreach programs and events. “We have a touring company called Books Alive!, which is a literacy program that dramatizes popular kids’ books,” said Magyar.

Books Alive! is a dynamic academic and arts program for children ages three to eight featuring a professional musical play based on a children’s book followed by workshops to encourage literacy. For many children, it’s their first time to experience the magic of live professional theatre, and they respond enthusiastically.

Presentations can be scheduled at your school or students come to KVPAC for a field trip. “It’s a very popular program; it’s been going on for years now. We tour a lot of schools in the area, both Katy and Houston and beyond,” said Magyar.

Additionally, the Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center has an artwork program with Texas Children’s Hospital,

COVER STORY

By Linda K. Eaves

Eleven years ago, the Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center (KVPAC) started as a collection of different visual and performing artists who offered classes for kids. “The

nature of our organization comes from the fact that it started with a group of artists with varying backgrounds, and they pulled it all together into one idea,” said Gregory Magyar, executive artistic director.

The original KVPAC was located in a downtown Katy warehouse referred to as “the hole-in-the-wall’s hole” because one had to walk through a dance studio’s waiting room to get to the hallway that led back to the garage to the center.

Now located at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center, KVPAC is comprised of two buildings: the theater arts building and a structure that houses art space,

an academic preschool and art classes.

As a 501(c)(3)

non-profit arts organization,

KVPAC has been dedicated to the education and accessibility of theater, visual arts and music programs to children, teens and adults since 2001. Its mission is to educate, nurture, inspire, challenge, surprise and empower artists and audiences in the Katy and surrounding communities.

Gregory Magyar came to the organization

three years ago to take the role of performing arts

director. “I became an intern executive director, then we

restructured, and we now have an executive artistic

“With All Your Art.” Local artists visit children individually at their beds and within a few hours create a “wall-ready” piece of art. Creating art in a short amount of time is both gratifying and empowering to sick children.

Theatre ArtsTheatre classes are provided for

children as well as adults. Private and semi-private instruction is available in voice, piano and guitar.

Encore Players is an all-volunteer adult community theatre organization that taps into the acting, vocal, dance and stagecraft talents of adults in the Katy area. Either on stage or behind

the scenes, Encore Players is home to those who love theatre and want to be a part of bringing that magic to life.

Katy-area residents can look to Encore Players as a source of theater enjoyment in their own backyard without the commute or cost involved with downtown Houston’s theaters. “We have our Encore Players that’s been around for four years. The plays are for adults performed by adults. It’s like any other community theatre in the country in terms of the kind of material,” Magyar said.

Party TimeParty Time provides themed parties

and characters for hire. Themed parties include: a take-home art project related to your theme, interactive theatrical games, meet and greet with your character with photo and autograph time. A Deluxe Character Party includes a live performance from such characters as Harry Potter, Superman Spiderman, Woody, Peter Pan and Aladdin or Belle, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Jasmine and Rapunzel.

Visual ArtsThe Visual Arts programs are

designed for ages three to adult to develop talents, stimulate creativity and encourage self-confidence. KVPAC

provides after-school classes during the academic school year, summer and spring break classes, special “field trip” workshops at KVPAC or your site, classes and workshops for homeschool families, Girl Scout activity badge or Boy Scout merit badge workshops and private or semi-private instruction.

PreKKVPAC’s PreK Program is designed

to engage students in developmentally appropriate projects and play opportunities that encourage both creative expression and individual growth. Multiple-day options are offered in their expanded facility.

Learning objectives seek a balanced approach. Academic performance, creative arts expression, along with social and physical development is emphasized. The PreK Programs include: The PreK@KVPAC, combined academics and arts, Mom and Me Music and Art and weekly half-day PreK summer classes.

“Our goal is to become known as more of a community-based arts center that’s for everybody,” said Magyar. “We’ve been known for working with kids for a long time, but we do so much more than that. Our next step is to let Katy know that we’re here for everybody.”

KVPAC is located at 2501 S. Mason Road, Suite 290. To learn more, please visit www.kvpac.org.

Nick Nicholson is the Film and Entertainment Critic for CNN Radio, the Fort Bend Star and absolutely! focus media. In addition, his reviews can be seen and heard in numerous other print/media outlets in Texas and Oklahoma. Mr. Nicholson is in great demand as a speaker to both public and civic organizations on the subject of film and the entertainment industry. He is the co-founder of the Houston Film Critics Society and is currently the President of the organization.

Keira Knightley stars as Anna in director Joe Wright’s bold, theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, Anna Karenina, a Focus Features release.

Anna Karenina is director Joe Wright's brand new visionary treatment of the epic love story

by Leo Tolstoy of the same name. Adapted for the screen by Academy Award winning writer Tom Stoppard, this film marks the third collaboration between best actress nominee Keira Knightley and the produc-tion team that was responsible for both Pride & Prejudice as well as Atonement.

This timeless film examines the heart and love and the symbiotic relationship we have with the loves of our lives. The film takes place in imperial Russia in 1974. Anna Karenina (Kiera Knightley) is absolutely beautiful and is what every woman aspires to be. She is married to Karenin (Jude Law), an officer in the gov-ernment with whom she has a son. The place the family has in the hierarchical so-ciety in St. Petersburg is unquestioned. At the request of her brother Oblonsky (Mat-thew Macfadyen) to come help save his marriage, she travels to Moscow to under-take the task. Along the way, Anna meets Countess Vronsky (Olivia Williams) and her son, cavalry officer Vronsky (Aaron

Taylor-Johnson). Upon their introduc-tion, there is clearly a spark between the two that in no way can be resisted.

While in Moscow, the home is visited by Oblonsky's best friend Levin (Domh-nall Gleeson) who happens to be a very understanding and compassionate land-owner. Levin happens to be in love with Dolly's younger sister Kitty (Alicia Vikan-der). Head over heals in love with Kitty, he awkwardly proposes to her, but her eyes are now on Vronsky.

Although devastated, Levin returns to his estate and buries himself with work. After scorning Vronsky, Kitty herself is absolutely heartbroken when Vronsky announces that he only wants the mar-ried Anna, who happens to also have the same level of interest in him. Confused, Anna struggles to regain her mental footing by traveling back home to St. Petersburg in order to get back into her regular routine, thinking that will help her get over her feelings for Vronsky. Un-beknownst to her, Vronsky follows her home. The entire St. Petersburg social society is tossed into mayhem after the affair is discovered. Karenin is put in the rather uncomfortable position of having to save face by giving his wife an ultimatum. While trying to attain her own happiness, Anna makes deci-sions that reverberate throughout the entire image-obsessed society that have dramatic consequences for her and ev-eryone around her.

Anna Karenina is extremely dazzling. The choreography and wardrobe are worth the price of admission alone, and the set designs are simply spectacular.

Director Wright does a remarkable job keeping the pertinent emotional arcs clear in the film. Tolstoy's original work was very brutal, and at times, confusing. The clarity that ensues in the film adaptation is really a good thing. The characters are able to spread their wings and have some freedom within the confines of the film's presentation. Keira Knightley absolutely shines in her role and the chemistry she shows with Taylor-Johnson is obvious.

The manner in which the film unwinds is an emotional roller coaster, as is the re-lationship that follows the same path. Jude Law is marvelous as the innocent husband who shows a bit of his dark side in an attempt to verbally abuse his wife after learning of the infidelity. Overall, the film is a bit too long, but it is a wonderfully presented love story that provides over the top chemistry, passion and emotion for the audience to feast upon. Anna Karenina is a must see for any true fan of the love story.

HOME FEATUREBy Sophia Vassi l iou

Simply BeautifulFestive Décor:

My personal style is to design with neutral colors, elements of simplicity and clean lines with emphasis on furniture placement. I like to observe the details, such as where artwork is hung and where tabletop accessories are placed as I decorate for the holiday season. When most homes are decorated to excess, my mantra is simplicity: There is a great impact with holiday decorations when you keep the backdrop minimal and add to existing pieces in your home.

Adding holiday decorations to a well-designed room doesn’t take much. As your home evolves with your festive décor, enjoy the season, and Happy Holidays!

For more tips from Sophia, contact her at [email protected] or 281-685-1429.

Seeking inspiration for infusing your interior with a festive atmosphere, yet you want an uncomplicated approach? Here are some of my favorite tips:

Use Nature’s Beauty

Nature gives us gifts. Try pine branches, magnolia leaves, fruits and berries for garlands and arrange-ments in glass or por-celain vases and urns.

Glitz and Glam

Dazzle an eclectic design with reflective accents of crystal, silver and gold.

Create Harmony with Color

Focus on creating a harmonious palette us-ing ornaments or other holiday decorations for color ideas. Repeat these hues from room to room.

Repeat Ribbon

Use the same bolts of colored ribbons to decorate everything from tree to mantle.

We Built on

M erry Christmas and a most Happy New Year. As we celebrate the holiday season, celebrate our playoff victories and prepare for a new year, I

want to remind you that January is School Board Trustee Appreciation Month. School Board Trustee Appreciation Month is celebrated across the state of Texas, as well as right here in Katy. I want us to make this month very special, not because I’m a trustee, but because I love history. The history of this area (the 181 square miles we call Katy ISD or the Katy area) was built on a vision of great schools. It is a place to raise a family. I honor all of those school board trustees and visionaries who went before me.

We have a rich heritage, and it is the responsibility of each of us to guard the trust we have been given, to build on that with which we have been entrusted. We cannot do that if we do not know, honor and respect our history and all those who went before us in building this great community. The following list is every school board member from as far back as we have record. Thank you, for all you gave your time, your talent and your treasury. You all gave to do a job that pays no salary but bestows such great rewards. You gave to listen to people scream, yell and complain, only to hear a few say thank you. You gave of yourself and your family for our children. Thank you for your service.

I ask our community in the month of January to say thank you in our schools, in our churches and on our streets. These men and women had a vision, and our children are the bene-factors of that vision. Now it’s our turn to grow the legacy. Great is the trust. I know together we can make Katy ISD an example of educational excellence unparalleled anywhere in the world – a place of learning where young people grow into outstanding adults who give back to their community.

Our community continues to grow, not only in size, but also in diversity. We have many challenges ahead as de-velopment begins north of I-10. What will Katy look like in 20 years? It’s up to us to decide now how to approach what we know will occur. It’s up to us to prepare now. We have been entrust-ed with this great vision, and together, we will make Katy ISD that light on a hill.

Focus on WorshipAdvertorial

F rom its small house-to-house beginning, Tallowood Baptist Church has become a dynamic fellowship

with membership in excess of 4,000 and a modern multi-functional campus that can simultaneously accommodate 2,600 in worship, Bible study, fellowship, recreation and music preparation. It directly supports missionaries in foreign countries, has planted or enabled churches across Texas and provides the facilities each week for worship by Hispanic, Arabic, Chinese, Burmese and Sudanese con-gregations.

Parents of preschoolers and grade schoolers will en-joy the safe, welcoming and secure environment for their children at Tallowood. Dynamic Bible study for all ages is a hallmark of Tallowood’s history. Lifelong friendships are common. Tallowood members reach into the commu-nity to assist neighbors and friends in times of need. The church believes it is our calling to be the hands and feet of Jesus in West Houston.

Sundays Tallowood offers two excellent worship choic-es with choir, orchestra and pipe organ led worship at 8:45 am and Contemporary (band driven) services at 11:15 am and on Saturday nights at 6:10 pm. Recently, Tallowood began a School of Fine Arts for private arts study.

Tallowood Baptist Church is located at 555 Tallowood Drive between Memorial City and CITYCENTRE. Visit www.tallowood.org for more information on everything Tallowood has to offer your West Houston family.

The Seven Lakes High School Band represented Katy ISD at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest in San Antonio,

Texas, on Tuesday, November 6th. They competed against other marching bands from across the state for top honors.

After earning a Division 1 rating in the Region 23 UIL Marching Contest earlier this month, Katy ISD’s Seven Lakes High School advanced to the Area Marching Contest held on Saturday, Oct. 27th. A total of 22 bands competed in the Area Contest with 10 advancing to finals and only four advancing to compete at the State Marching Contest. The Seven Lakes High School band was among the top four bands and advanced to State. Only four times since the 1980’s has a school from Katy advanced to the State Marching Contest and only two times in 5A classification. The last time a school advanced to the State Marching level was Seven Lakes High School in 2007 as a 4A school.

The State Marching Contest took place at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The 5A competition comprised of 38 bands from across the state. These bands are considered the “best of the best” and competition is steep.

The Spartan Band competed with both band and color guard members comprised of approximately 320 members. Directors include Damon Archer, Director of Bands; David Reynolds, Associate Director of Bands; Jonathan Yoo, Assistant Director of Bands and Angie Fritsch, Guard Director. Drum Majors include Grace Chung,Head Drum Major; Alaina Roth; Molly Todd; and Mark Milhelin. Rachel Luergering is the band’s student teacher.

The UIL State Marching competition for 5A takes place every other year. The competition is evaluated by five different judges and all bands are given a composite score. Based on these results, the top 10 out of 38 bands advance to finals, which take place later in the evening. Unfortunately, the Spartan Band did not advance to finals, however, advancing to this level was quite an accomplishment. Marcus High School from Flower Mound placed first in this year’s contest, and eight out of the top 10 bands in this year’s finals were also among the top 10 bands in the 2010 State Marching Contest Finals.

The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band would like to thank Katy ISD for their support at this recent trip to compete at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest. Also supporting the band were corporate sponsors Conoco-Philips; Wal-Mart Transportation; Baytown Shopping Center; M&H Enterprises; Soteica Visual Mesa; Drs. Hamon & Debuyl, DDS; Infinity Roofing; Kingsland Dental Group; Randall’s; Trendmaker Homes; Trailer World of Katy; KTK, Inc and Forrest Orthodontics.

I t is that time of year again for holiday parties and festivities, and one big question that is

often asked is “How do I decorate my dinner table for a holiday party?” One thing to make sure of is that your centerpiece will not block the view of dinner guests at the table. No one wants to keep leaning over to one side in order to talk to the person across the table.

Think BigSo what are your options? If you

want something big and dramatic, get a tall, skinny, glass vase that will clear your eyesight. You can put tree trimmings, flowers, sticks or hang decorative ornaments for some extra bling coming out of the vase.

Think SmallAnother option is to have small,

low decorations. For example, get bud vases and line them up and down the table. How many of you get poinsettias for decorations or as gifts? Trim a few flowers off, and put them in a bud vase. This is a great way to get a festive look, and add a little color to your table. You can also have little glass votive candles between each bud vase to add elegance. Don’t forget your buffet table! Line up a row of votive candles there, too.

Personalized Place SettingsMany people like to add place card

settings to the table but worry that they add clutter and just get in the way. If you have placemats, get a paint pen in silver or gold, and write your guest’s name directly on it. This will give it a custom look, and add a little elegance while not cluttering the table.

We here at Simply Divine Interiors wish everyone Happy Holidays!

absolute ly!AUTO REVIEW

By Steve Kursar

RAM 1500 PICKUPT he all-new 2013 Ram 1500 pick-

up took home top honors as the 2012 Truck of Texas at the an-

nual Texas Truck Rodeo at the Knibbe Ranch just north of San Antonio. This trophy, voted on by fifty members of the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA), is arguably the most presti-gious of all truck awards because Tex-ans know more about trucks. TAWA members drove the newest, toughest trucks over rough ranch roads, creek beds and rocky ascents to test the best each truck-maker brought to the event. Each year, several competitors leave the course worse for wear.

It’s no surprise that the 2013 Ram 1500 won this year’s big trophy. The Ram team just brought out a truck that’s considerably better than the 2012 model year with an upgraded in-terior, a smoother ride and much im-proved fuel economy. The base 305 hp, 3.6-liter V6 engine gets the truck best-in-class fuel economy of 25 mpg on the highway, that’s 2 mpg better than Ford’s base V6 and 3 mpg better than the V6 EcoBoost. The V6 engine also gets 16 mpg in the city. What’s

more, the Ram has an eight-speed au-tomatic transmission that’s controlled by a rotary “e-shift” knob on the dash, showing a technological leap over its competitors. If you just gotta have a

V8, then you can choose from either the 310 hp, 4.7-liter engine or the 395 hp, 5.7-liter engine, both of which get fuel economy numbers of 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway.

The new Ram’s ride is practically vibration-less due to a lighter and stronger redesigned frame and an available air suspension system of-fering five settings and can raise or lower the stance of the truck by four inches. This truck is now quieter, and the upgraded interior showcases lux-ury features that the Ram’s rival can’t match, such as buttery leather, real wood grain trim (not a strip of vinyl), an 8.4-inch display, a 115-volt power outlet in the dash and keyless ignition. You can now lock the tailgate and the RamBox cargo system with the touch of one button.

In dealerships right now, the base 2013 Ram 1500 has an MSRP of $22,590. But the popular Texas Edi-tion, at $34,275, is a good place to start. By giving us a pickup that gets 25 mpg on the highway, the team at Ram trucks just made it easier for all of us to drive a truck again.
