T his place just keeps getting better. In a time when men and women have the option to shave years off their bodies, correct problem areas and improve their

self-esteem, confidence and looks through medical procedures, Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery offers the best op-tions in the business.

Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic SurgeryExpands Services to Include State-of-the-Art Medical Spa

and Body package, so to speak, said Dr. Eric Humble, the man who made Sugar Land Face and Body a reality.

A board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Humble said he en-joys the transformations he can make happen with his pa-tients. After performing his first face lift, Dr. Humble said his patient not only loved his work but the changes it brought to her life. “It showed me the light,” he said. “Not only did she look wonderful, her self-esteem improved, her home life improved and her work life improved. Helping people feel better about themselves – that’s always my goal.”

And now, through the facility’s medical spa, Dr. Humble has found another way to help even more people. In this medical spa, governed by the Board of Medicine, cosmetic procedures are offered under the supervision of a doctor. “We have purchased every type of technology to create the most cutting edge spa, with the most up-to-date procedures, that truly show results,” Dr. Humble said. “Not everyone puts this kind of investment into a spa.”

Sugar Land Face and Body already offers breast en-hancement, body contouring and facial rejuvenation, but the medical spa has increased the facility’s services to include advanced non-surgical procedures, often referred to as aes-thetic procedures. The medical spa is perfect for people who don’t need, or want, to undergo surgery to receive the results they’re looking for, said Marty Knesek, R.N., who manages the medical spa. “There are some problems that can be cor-rected without surgery, and I’m here to guide them in all things non-surgical,” she said. “My goal is to help my pa-tients look the best they can.”

Some of the traditional procedures offered in the medical spa are botox and fillers – cosmetic injections that are used to revolumize the face, smooth wrinkles and to create fuller lips – but the spa is expanding its procedures to those Dr. Humble and Knesek know will please patients.

Vampire FacialDon’t want the downtime involved in facial resurfacing?

A vampire facial involves using a patient’s own Plasma Rich Protein to help stimulate one’s own collagen production, im-proving skin texture while toning the skin.

FractoraFractora is a revolutionary resurfacing procedure that

can be utilized on all skin types. It can be used on any area that can benefit from skin renewal, achieving profound con-traction, especially on the neck area. Non-surgical face lift results are noted, especially in regards to deep wrinkles, fine lines, pore size, skin texture, broken capillaries and more with significantly less down time versus CO2 laser resurfac-ing procedures.

CoolSculpting®

Essentially a fat-freezing treatment meant for fat volume reduction, CoolSculpting is an option for those who don’t want liposuction. The only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat reduction treatment, CoolSculpting is perfect for those indi-viduals who have fat resistant to diet and exercise.

Holiday Specials“This is an amazing option,” Kne-sek said. “It’s an in-and-out procedure that’s a lot less invasive for those areas you would consider using liposuction on.”

Micro-NeedlingFor those looking to improve their

skin, micro-needling offers treatment for moderate acne, fine lines and wrin-kles, lax skin, burns, stretch marks, as well as skin texture and pore size. “This treatment creates a response to regenerate collagen,” Knesek said.

HydraFacialThis medical facial exfoliates, ex-

tracts, cleanses and hydrates the skin for immediate results. The treatment, which removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities, can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, oily or acne prone skin, congested and enlarged pores, hyper-pigmentation and brown spots. According to Knesek, “This is a comfortable procedure, and it’s great for clogged pores.”

Chemical PeelAnother option to improve the skin,

a chemical peel works by applying a chemical solution to the skin that soaks in and causes the skin to peel. This pro-cedure essentially rids the body of skin

in a controlled manner so that new skin can grow in its place. Usually done on the face, neck and hands, a chemi-cal peel can improve the appearance of scars and acne, reduce age spots, fine lines and dark patches and improve the overall look and feel of the skin.

UltherapyThe aesthetic option to tighten, lift

and tone skin, Ultherapy is ideal for those considering a face lift. The only FDA-cleared procedure to non-surgical neck, brow and under-chin lifts, Ulthe-rapy uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten skin. “It’s a great non-surgical option to a face lift, as well as a preven-tative measure for the younger popula-tion,” said Dr. Humble.

True GuidanceIn addition to having access to these

new procedures, patients can be confi-dent to get the best advice when using them. “We don’t do ‘Hollywood stuff’ in here,” Knesek said. “By that, I mean we don’t force procedures on patients or make changes that would leave them embarrassed. I will never make them look like someone they never were before. When people walk out of here, I want them to feel good about themselves.”

And that’s a common theme at Sug-ar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery

– making sure each patient feels great about the choices they’ve made – ei-ther through surgery or non-surgical means. “We have a trust within this community,” Dr. Humble said. “We’re not going to push people into getting procedures, because we’re dedicated to delivering good results.”

Knesek said she provides the best care by taking the time to have in-depth complimentary consultations with her patients. Through her consultations, Knesek guides her patients, offers her opinion on decisions and makes them feel comfortable about the decisions they’ve made. “I want my patients to come to me with their questions, and we can spend 45 minutes to an hour discussing options, because there is usually more than one thing we can do,” she said. “I explain to my patients what the procedure does, what they can expect and I make sure there are no medical complications, especially for those patients who have never had a procedure done.”

“When I sit down with a patient, I take everything in consideration – their lifestyle, like if they’re an outdoors type of person – their health, medical histo-ry and if they are looking for corrective or preventative care,” Knesek added. “I listen to what the patient wants and customize treatments for the patient. I will always guide them to what’s in their best interest.”

With its refined medical spa led by Knesek, Dr. Humble said Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery is cre-ating an even stronger presence in the community. Already, the well-estab-lished facility is known for its contri-butions to various Fort Bend County charitable events including Girlfriends Giggle and the Sugar Plum Market. Now, it’s getting a reputation for offer-ing high-quality cosmetic care.

“Now, everything is under one roof,” Dr. Humble said. “From consult to sur-gery, our patients get everything they need here in one place.”

You may know me as a Katy mom of three amazing boys and wife to Daryn, but what

you may not know is that I love finding cool and unique products because, let’s face it, in a house full of boys, a girl needs her girl stuff! So, here are some things I absolutely love... and hope you will, too!

FabulousFinds

Christmas Memory TreesI discovered these beautiful little trees on a shopping trip to Round Top. They really are the prettiest and best little faux Christmas trees I have seen. Each tree is dedicated by a woman who makes them in memory of her mom, which I thought was so sweet and wonderful. There are three sizes to choose from, and she also has the best lights and berries to decorate your trees! www.clintonantiquemall.com

Large Sarra Cuff BraceletThis cuff bracelet is so pretty in person! It looks much more expensive than it is, and it looks good with everything, especially stacked with other bracelets or a watch. There are many stone colors to choose from, but the iridescent is my favorite. This would make a great stocking stuffer!www.lorenhope.com

Pre-Dripped Cand les by WickedThese candles not only make wonderful gifts, but they also look amazing with any holiday décor. There are so many colors, scents and sizes to choose from. They are really neat looking and smell awesome, too!www.thewickedcandles.com

Jacket Happy Jackets by Debbie ClemensI love all of my friend Debbie’s creations, but her jackets are so gorgeous. There are literally hundreds to choose from, and that could be why I have so many. I just couldn’t decide! Some have fur, leather or crystals, and some have all three! You really have to see them to appreciate their beauty. www.debbieclemens.com

Belletto Studio Airbrush MakeupHere I am with another makeup product. I promise that you will love this! I was extremely nervous about using this at first, but once I practiced with it a couple of times, I was good to go. The makeup covers but doesn’t really feel like you have any on! It feels very lightweight on my skin. I’ve only used the foundation and primer, but they also carry blush, eye color and bronzers! www.bellettostudio.com

Congratulations to the 2014 Fort Bend County Fair Queen candidates Melissa Ramos, Abby Knox, Mikala Stuart, Nicole Stevenson, Kasey-Lane Bronsell, Zoe Zgabay, Wendy Hobdy and Allyson Miller!

2014 Fort Bend County Fair Queen Kasey-Lane Bronsell was crowned by the 2013 Fair Queen Sami Warriner during the Queen Coronation.

Michelle and Jesse Espinoza brought their two children, McKenzie and Jonah, out for a sunny day of fun.

Skylar Hartfiel, Alex Ambrose, Dawn Weiss, Ashley Arbour and Lacey Campbell.

The Seven Lakes Varsity Cheerleaders raised over $500 for the Pink Ribbons Project to honor a cheer mom who recently beat breast cancer. The girls passed out pink ribbons and collected donations during the third quarter of the largest Pink Out game in Katy history. Dawn Weiss was surprised with a dinner honoring her before the game and custom t-shirts worn by the squad and their families.

The legendary Katy Rice Harvest Festival did not disappoint Katy families with two days of fun, two stages of live entertainment and numerous craft and food booths.

Aidan and Allison McAfee geared up for the National League of Junior Cotillions’ Katy Chapter Pre-Cotillion winter classes, which take place at Cinco Ranch Golf Club for first through fourth grade young ladies and gentlemen.

absolute ly!AUTO REVIEW

absolute ly!AUTO REVIEW

By Steve Kursar

F or the last couple of decades, American and Japanese luxury carmakers have benchmarked

their German counterparts as a way to catch up to them in several areas. As a result, the non-German brands have started to look, feel and drive more German. Well, the Germans haven’t exactly been sitting back and watch-ing all of this happen. Nope, they were busy designing and engineering their cars to stay one or several steps ahead.

A perfect example is the new 2014 BMW M235i Coupe. This is the BMW that is made for the entry-level luxu-ry segment, essentially the “afford-able” step into a luxury vehicle, which means it is priced somewhere in the mid $30,000 range, although the final price tag can be much higher.

But if you do drive either or more of the worthy rear-wheel drive competi-tors to the BMW 2-Series, what you’ll discover is the emotion that only the BMW elicits from its driver. I think that comes from both that German high-way speed limits allow drivers to com-monly push their cars over 100 miles per hour and that Germans just take driving more seriously. No German would consider sipping a Starbucks Mocha Latte while driving the Auto-bahn. Both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road at all times.

The base BMW 2-Series with an MSRP of $32,100 is the 228i with a 240 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cyl-inder engine that gets fuel economy numbers of 23 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The M235i is the more expensive – and way more fun

to drive – model that has a has a 320 hp, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine.

The M235i has the abil-ity to make everyday driv-ing a dream, where just a supermarket run is fun. But throw it into Sport mode, and that’s where it shines. My daughter

loved getting on the Tollway ramp when I was able to accelerate to over 70 mph very quickly. Unfortunately for both us, there’s no Autobahn with-in driving distance. There’s a Sport mode that removes the traction con-trol feature, but I didn’t dare go there. The standard Sport mode was enough excitement for me.

The BMW M235i Coupe has thrown down the gauntlet to the American, Japanese and soon Korean carmakers looking to offer American car buyers with the best driving cars on the road. But it’s all good news for us, because all cars just keep getting better and better.

Meet Brandon Miller

By Joan FrancesPhotography by Shots by Shell

A high school is built on many levels of education. Academ-ics are a major part of the

process, while extracurricular ac-tivities such as theater, art, speech and sports help build integrity. At James Taylor High School, a formi-dable combination produces strong, compassionate and devoted people. Senior Brandon Miller meets this cri-teria with pride.

Brandon began running track as a freshman. He was a sprinter in the 100 meter dash and the 4x1 relay. His relay team was invited to compete in the Texas relay his freshman year. With over 300 competitors, the team placed 39th. Brandon began partici-pating in football at age five. He has played offense and defense and every position. Now, as a senior, Brandon is a running back.

During football season, there are 10 regular games and then playoffs. When asked what it is about football he enjoys the most, Brandon said, “It reveals character. We are required to attend every practice and to be at school every day. This is an incentive to be a team player and to live up to my coaches’ expectations. We also have to keep our grades up, or we are cut from the team. My friends are like my family. I don’t want to disappoint

Brandon

them, so I do the best I can.” Football is so much more than just

a game to Brandon and his teammates. It teaches camaraderie and self-control. Practices are long and grueling. During the summer, there are two practices a day in the heat with workouts and run-ning sessions. These long hours have de-veloped lasting friendships, some since middle school, that will survive many years past high school. The team mem-bers learn how to work with one another to accomplish goals and support each other through wins and losses.

During football season, the whole school rallies around the team, cheering them on through pep rallies and home-coming celebrations. Cheerleaders pam-per the guys with spirit bags and deco-rate their lockers with good luck signs. Brandon enjoys being on the field and making plays to help lead the team to victory. He said, “The cheers from the crowd are the best motivation. I know my family and friends are supporting my every move. There is no better feel-ing. It makes all of the hard work worth it.”

Brandon’s favorite subject is history. His family grew up in the military ser-

vice, fighting during the war and sur-viving the tragedies. He enjoys learn-ing about the World Wars, Vietnam and the sacrifices these military men went through for our country. His fa-vorite teacher is Matt Glover, the of-fensive team coach. He is Brandon’s mentor, gives him good advice, is al-ways available and helps him with school and football.

Family means everything to Bran-don. “My family is always there for me. They are the foundation and sup-port in my life.” When Brandon is not playing football, he enjoys basket-ball. He coaches his younger brother after school, teaching him all he has learned from his years of playing the game. Since he was 13, Brandon has helped his father as a window tint specialist. Now, he is a waiter at Trios Mexican Food Restaurant in Katy.

When he graduates in the spring, Brandon’s dream is to play profes-sional football. He would like to at-tend college and play football at Tex-as A&M University or the University of Indiana, where he will study kine-siology and become a physical trainer. With such determination, drive and commitment, Brandon will make his dreams come true.

“My family is always there for me.They are the foundation and support in my life.”

Fusion Academy is an alternative, college-prep private school for grades six through 12 that offers class sizes as small as they come: one student, one teacher. Students may attend Fusion Academy full time or enroll in their after-school and summer programs as an educational supple-ment.

Personalization and customization are key elements of Fusion Academy’s programs. The curriculum meets state standards, but the classes are self-paced and taught in a way that considers each student’s individual interests, strengths and learning style. Fusion Academy also offers flexible scheduling and allows students to begin a class at any time during the year. What’s more, Fusion Academy’s students do not take their homework home with them, but they complete it under teacher supervision in the Home-work Café® before they leave for the day.

Beyond academic support, Fusion Academy partners with outside therapeutic professionals and programs to support students’ emotional health and create a balance between learning and life. Each campus is also equipped with a state-of-the-art recording studio and a full mixed-media art studio to provide students with opportunities for creative expression.

For those looking for additional enrichment classes, Fu-sion offers the following subjects for both private lessons and courses for credit, taught from the beginner to the ad-vanced/performance level: yoga, foreign languages, pia-no, recording arts, voice, music theory and composition, drums and more. Each campus has a limited enrollment, and prime schedules fill up quickly. For more information, visit www.FusionAcademy.com.

Q A&Sickle Cell: Part Two

Q: WHAT IS THE TREATMENTPLAN? WHAT ARE SOME

TREATMENT OPTIONS?At Texas Children’s Sickle Cell Center,

our first treatment approach is to pre-scribe an antibiotic called penicillin. Tak-ing penicillin twice daily for at least the first five years of life has been shown to significantly reduce serious infections and death in young children with severe forms of sickle cell disease. Immuniza-tions are also important to prevent infec-tions.

Blood transfusions can be used to treat certain types of sickle cell disease complications. Additionally, a small num-ber of children may require blood trans-fusion monthly to prevent stroke.

Hydroxyurea (a medication taken by mouth) has been proven to reduce painful crises, acute chest syndrome (a pneumonia-like lung complication), need for transfusion and hospitalizations in children and adults with sickle cell dis-ease. It has also been shown to prolong life and improve the quality of life in adult patients.

A bone marrow transplantation, also called a stem cell transplant, is the only

curative therapy for sickle cell disease. This therapy has significant risks and should be carefully balanced with the benefit to an individual patient. The most successful transplants come from a matched (full) sibling, limiting the num-ber of patients eligible for transplant.

Q: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR A CHILD WITH SICKLE

CELL DISEASE TO BE SEEN BY A PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGIST?

Children with sickle cell disease should be followed by a pediatric hema-tologist – a specialist who sees children with blood disorders – at least every six months. This allows the child to be screened for potential complications, as well as for the family to be provided in-formation about the disease. Depending on disease severity and treatment op-tions, some children may need to come more frequently.

A lot has changed in the care of chil-dren with sickle cell disease, especially in the last 10 years. A pediatric hematol-ogist will work with a child’s primary care doctor to screen for potential complica-tions and provide education on sickle cell

disease and associated complications, as well as on treatment options for the child.

Additionally, our clinic is multidisci-plinary – meaning that we have a team of people to help parents and caregiv-ers take care of their child. Our team includes patient care coordinators, social workers, child life specialists, psycholo-gists and pulmonologists. This team ap-proach allows us to take better care of children and families.

Q: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT TEXAS CHILDREN’S

SICKLE CELL CENTER?Serving close to 1,000 children each

year, Texas Children’s Sickle Cell Center is the largest center of its kind in Texas, and one of the largest in the U.S. The multidisciplinary team is made up of board certified pediatric hematologists, hematology-trained nurse practitioners and physician assistants, research staff and social workers. Texas Children’s Sickle Cell Center offers ambulatory ser-vices, including outpatient blood trans-fusion and pain treatment programs, a sickle cell pulmonary clinic, sickle cell stroke clinic and genetic counseling all in one location.

The program conducts state-of-the-art clinical and laboratory research aimed at gaining a better understanding of the disease, preventing its complications and ultimately finding a cure. The cen-ter’s research funding is provided by government grants and the philanthropic support of a variety of community-based organizations. This partnership allows us to offer even more novel therapies to our sickle cell patients.

May peace be your gift at Christmasand your blessing throughout the year.

Muses for theHoliday Season

On Love…Love people who treat you right, and pray for the ones who don’t.Don’t worry about who doesn’t like you. Spend your time and energy loving the people who love you.“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” – Mother Teresa

On Life…Sometimes the thing that is holding you back…is all in your head.“He who laughs...lasts.” – Erma Bombeck

On Peace…Peace within you begins the moment when you choose not to allow another person or event to control your emotions.Acknowledge and believe the fact that you can-not change another person, only your response to them.Peace is marked by the ability to move away from drama and people who create it.Distance yourself from perpetrators of negativity and criticism.

On Friendship…Life is not about the people who act true to your face. It’s about the people who remain true behind your back.Friends make you laugh, focus on the good, for-get the bad, know all about you and still love you.“Friendship is born at that moment when one man says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .’” – C.S. Lewis

On Divorce…Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help and brave enough to ask for it.Be willing to let go of life as you’ve planned it, so you can embrace the life that is waiting for you.

On the Future…Today is the day to start over and get it right.Everybody has “baggage” to deal with. Thedifference between people is whether they choose to be laden with their “baggage” or choose to deal with their “baggage” and get on with the good things life has in store for them.Moving forward doesn’t mean that you forget about the past; it simply means accepting what happened, sharpening your skills to discern and make deliberate choices to create a happy future.

Houston Methodist West Hospital Brings

Renowned Cancer Program to Katy

Did you know ovarian cancer is the 11th most common cancer among wom-en? It’s the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women, because it often is not detected early. Houston Method-ist West Hospital’s gynecology oncology program treats cancers of women’s re-productive organs, such as ovarian and cervical cancer, bringing the resources and proficiency of Houston Methodist’s renowned cancer program to the west Houston and Katy communities.

Using a highly specialized team ap-proach, the team includes gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, med-ical oncologists and pathologists, who work closely with each other and with each patient to provide a comprehen-sive, individualized care in a healing and supportive environment. With access to leading research and cutting-edge treatment, these physicians are expertly trained in the latest techniques in mini-mally invasive surgery and have access to novel treatment therapies as unique as each woman’s cancer.

“We provide a wide range of treat-ment options, incorporating traditional, as well as leading-edge therapies and procedures,” said Dr. Joshua Kilgore, a gynecologic oncologist who is head-ing up the program. “Our goal is to work with each woman to meet her medical and personal needs.” Dr. Kilgore brings with him the most advanced techniques in minimally invasive surgery. He com-pleted his fellowship at the University of North Carolina, one of the most presti-gious programs in the country.

2. Push fabric through opening, turning it right side out. Press piece. Repeat with fabric B.

1. Separate and paint embroidery hoops and yardstick white. Allow to dry.

2. Determine desired height of finished tree to plan where ornaments will hang. The shortest lengths of thread and ornaments are hung from smallest embroidery hoop, lon-gest hung from largest hoop.

3. Cut clear thread, using lengths determined in step above, plus two inches extra for tying and knotting.

3. Run base stitch through center of both A and B. Pull on thread to cinch both pieces at center. Place piece B on top of A and run secure stitch to hold both pieces together.

4. Cut remnant holiday fabric C to two inches by five inches. Fold in half with right sides together and sew along long edge. Flip fabric so right side shows. Wrap around center of bow and stitch in place.

5. Cut 1 inch-by-1 1/2 inch piece of fabric D using pinking shears. Place over holiday remnant C seam. Stitch down.

6. Cut two-inch length of elastic. Loop and stitch to back of bow. Position loop so collar will slide through and bow will lay horizontal on dog.

4. Construct clear ornaments. Paint confetti dot design on outside of ornament using translucent paint, allow to dry. Use clear thread to hang an LED light inside ornament or create paper tag noting a gift wish and place inside ornament.

5. Starting with smallest embroidery hoop, use shortest lengths of thread to tie green and clear ornaments all the way around hoop. Trim excess thread. Repeat for remain-ing hoops.

6. Starting with smallest hoop, secure hoop to yardstick with clear thread. Secure next larger hoop to yardstick below smaller hoop. Repeat with remaining hoops so each surrounds the previous to construct tree with layers of or-naments. Gently shift each hoop as needed to create a uniform shape. Fill empty spots with additional ornaments.

7. Hang goldornament from middle of yardstick at top of tree. For a more per-manent hold, secure hoops to yardstick with craft glue or duct tape. Source: FamilyFeatures

brown sugar• 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon• 1 teaspoon salt• 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger• 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves• 1 cup half and half

Prep Time: 35 minutes Chill Time: Several hours or overnight

Cook Time: 35–37 minutesYield: 6 mini pies

To make unbaked crusts, mix flour and salt in large bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until pieces are size of small peas. Mix egg yolks, six tablespoons ice water and lemon juice in small bowl. Add to flour mixture, one tablespoon at a time, stirring lightly and tossing with fork until moistened and dough just holds together. Add remaining ice water, if needed. Gather dough and shape into six one inch-thick disks. Refriger-ate, wrapped in plastic wrap, one hour or overnight.

Roll out each dough disk on lightly floured surface, rolling from center to edge, to form a six inch circle. Fold into quarters; ease and unfold into a four inch pie plate. Press pastry gently against bottom and sides of pie plate, easing out any air. Trim edge, leaving 1/2 inch overhang. Fold overhang under; flute edge. Refrigerate, covered, at least 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 400°F. Whisk eggs, pumpkin, brown sugar, cin-namon, salt, ginger and cloves in medium bowl. Beat in half and half. Pour approximately 2/3 cup into each mini piecrust. Care-fully place pies on rack in oven. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce oven to 350°F; continue baking 20–22 minutes or until knife inserted midway between center and edge of pie comes out clean.

Cool completely on wire rack. Refrigerate, loosely covered, until firm, several hours or overnight. Garnish with toasted pe-cans and whipped cream.
