The Third Sunday Of Advent

Today, we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. It’s hard to believe that we started Advent on Dec. 3 two weeks ago, and that now we are already one week away from celebrating Christmas! On this Third Sunday of Advent, once again we hear about St. John the Baptist. Time is quickly running out before Christmas comes, so the call of St. John the Baptist to prepare for the coming of Christ is all the more adamant and fervent. In the Gospel of John today, we hear about John preaching in the wilderness, and how priests and Levites come to him from Jerusalem to ask him questions. They ask John a number of times, “who are you?” John replies, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the desert make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said." The image

that we see is a fresco entitled John the Baptist Preaching (1732-33) by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, illustrating today’s Gospel story. We see St. John the Baptist fulfilling the words of the prophet Isaiah: he is the voice of the one crying out in the desert to make straight the way of the Lord.

St. John the Baptist was trying to prepare not just the people living 2,000 years ago for the coming of the promised Messiah, but even now, St. John the Baptist is trying to prepare us for the coming of Christ. How can we prepare for the coming of Christ in these short, final days of Advent? Recently, I read two articles that gave tips how to keep Advent holy. One was written by Lindsey Kettner and the other was written by Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle. They were both very practical and simple. I share their two insightful thoughts and combined them into one to help our Advent preparation.

So, here are six tips to keep Advent Holy in our Homes. Perhaps they will help us to make our homes “another Nazareth” this Advent, as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta encouraged us. A is for Adoration. Find one hour this Advent to go before the Lord in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament in church. Don’t bring a list of items. Just open your heart in silence and listen. Silence with God is the key. In our homes, establish a “NO NOISE” time. How can we hear God with all the noise around us? Set a time for 10 minutes of silence at home everyday. Turn off everything in the house, and in the quiet listen to God whispering to our souls. D is for Divine Word. Try to read the Bible everyday. Take ten minutes to read and pray with the Sacred Scriptures. Use the Sunday readings a guide and beginning. Focus on the Book of Prophet Isaiah or the Infancy Narratives found in the Gospel of Matthew and Luke. V is for the Virgin Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary carries Jesus in her womb and brings the Savior to world. Invite the Blessed Virgin Mary into our hearts and homes in a special way. Give Mary more time and devotion this Advent. Place sacred and holy images of the Blessed Virgin, Jesus around the house and pray with them. E is for Examination of Conscience. As we hear St. John the Baptist preach, Advent is a time for us to search our souls and see how we need to make straight our paths to be prepared for the coming of the Lord. Confession is good way of preparing ourselves for the coming of Christ. N is for Neighborliness. There are many people around us who are less fortunate or struggling. Maybe they are mourning the loss of loved ones, lonely, sick, poor, hungry, needy, etc. Advent offers many opportunities for us to pray for these people, be charitable, and perform the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. T is for Tradition. Traditions give us a sense of identity and they bond us together, especially a family. Use an Advent wreath and light the candles each night at dinner. Say a prayer or two after you say your Grace Before Meals, such as the Angelus Prayer. Some families use a Jesse Tree. Get acquainted with a saint and read about their life in the evening together. On Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7:00 pm, we will offer confessions in English and Spanish. Please pray for all expectant mothers and for their unborn children. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Hoy, celebramos el tercer domingo de Adviento. Es difícil creer que comenzamos el Adviento el 3 de diciembre hace dos semanas, ¡Y que ahora ya estamos a una semana de celebrar la Navidad! En este Tercer Domingo de Adviento, una vez más escuchamos acerca de San Juan Bautista. El tiempo se agota rápidamente antes de que llegue la Navidad, por lo que el llamado de San Juan Bautista para prepararse para la venida de Cristo es aún más inflexible y ferviente. Hoy en el Evangelio de Juan, escuchamos de Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto y de cómo los sacerdotes y los Levitas vienen a él desde Jerusalén para cuestionarlo. Le preguntaron a Juan varias veces: "¿Quién eres tú?" A lo cual Juan responde: "Yo soy la voz del que clama en el desierto: ‘Enderecen el camino del Señor’, como dijo el profeta Isaías.”

La imagen que vemos es un fresco titulado Predicación de Juan el Bautista (1732-33) de Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, que ilustra la historia del Evangelio de hoy, vemos a San Juan Bautista cumpliendo las palabras del profeta Isaías: él es la voz del que clama en el desierto para enderezar el camino del Señor. Tal como escuchamos a San Juan el Bautista predicar, el Adviento es un tiempo para escudriñar nuestras almas y de ver cómo debemos enderezar nuestros caminos; y así estar preparados para la venida del Señor. La confesión es una buena manera de prepararnos para la venida de Cristo. V- es de Vecindad. Hay muchas personas a nuestro alrededor que son menos afortunadas o tienen dificultades. Tal vez están de luto por la pérdida de seres queridos, solos, enfermos, pobres, hambrientos, necesitados, etc. Adviento ofrece muchas oportunidades para que oremos por estas personas, seamos caritativos y realicemos las Obras Espirituales y Corporales de Misericordia. T- es de Tradición. Las tradiciones nos dan un sentido de identidad y nos unen, especialmente en familia. Use una corona de Adviento y encienda las velas cada noche durante la cena. Haga una o dos oraciones después de Orar por los Alimentos, como por ejemplo la oración del Ángelus. Algunas familias usan un Árbol Jesse (ornamental). Familiarícese con un santo y lean juntos sobre la vida de este santo. El martes, 19 de diciembre a las 7:00 p.m., ofreceremos confesiones en inglés y español. Por favor oren por todas las mujeres embarazadas y por sus hijos sin nacer. ¡Que la Santísima Virgen María, Madre del Buen Socorro, nos ayude con su cuidado materno y San José ruegue por nosotros! ¡Vivat Jesús! ¡Viva Jesús!

Przypada dzisiaj III Niedziela Adwentu. Nie do wiary, że pozostał nam jeszcze tylko tydzień do Bożego Narodzenia! Słuchamy dziś czytania o świętym Janie Chrzcicielu. Czasu do Świąt już coraz mniej, tym bardziej naglące jest więc wezwanie Jana Chrzciciela do przygotowania się na przyjście Pana. W dzisiejszym czytaniu z Ewangelii według św. Jana, Jan na pustyni zapowiada przyjście Chrystusa. Przyszli do Jana kapłani i Lewici z Jerozolimy i pytają się go wielokrotnie: „Kim jesteś?” Na to Jan odpowiada: „Jam głos wołającego na pustyni: prostujcie drogę Pańską, jak powiedział prorok Izajasz”. Mamy tutaj ilustrację dzisiejszego czytania – fresk autorstwa Giovanniego Battisty Tiepoli, pod tytułem: „Kazanie świętego Jana

Chrzciciela” (1732-1733). Widzimy Jana wypełniającego proroctwo Izajasza – on jest głosem wołającego na pustyni, aby prostować ścieżki Panu. Święty Jan Chrzciciel usiłował przygotować na przyjście obiecanego Mesjasza nie tylko ludzi sprzed 2000 lat, lecz także i nas żyjących współcześnie. Jak możemy się do tego przygotować na tej „ostatniej prostej” Adwentu? Niedawno przeczytałem dwa artykuły doradzające, jak zachować świętość w okresie adwentowym. Pierwszy napisała Lindsey Kettner, drugi zaś Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle. Zaproponowane przez nie rozwiązania są praktyczne i proste. Chciałbym się tymi radami podzielić teraz z Wami, w ramach naszych przygotowań adwentowych. Poniżej znajdziecie sześć wskazówek, jak zachować świętość tegorocznego Adwentu. Być może dzięki nim, nasze domy staną się „drugim Nazaretem”, jak to mawiała św. Matka Teresa z Kalkuty. a) Adoracja. Znajdźcie w Adwencie chociaż godzinę na to, aby pobyć sam na sam z Jezusem w Najświętszym Sakramencie. Nie zabierajcie wielu rzeczy do kościoła – po prostu otwórzcie serce przed Bogiem i słuchajcie Go w ciszy. Cisza z Panem jest tu najważniejsza. Wygospodarujcie w domu czas bez hałasu. Wokół nas jest tyle hałasu, że ciężko nam usłyszeć Boga. Znajdźcie codziennie 10 minut tylko dla Boga. Wyłączcie telewizor, radio, komputer i w cieszy słuchajcie głosu Boga szepczącego w naszych sercach. b) Słowo Boże. Starajcie się codziennie czytać Biblię. Znajdźcie 10 minut na lekturę i medytację Pisma Świętego, zaczynając od czytań niedzielnych. Skupcie się na Księdze Izajasza, lub Dzieciństwie Jezusa, opisanym w Ewangeliach Mateusza i Łukasza. c) Najświętsza Maryja Panna. Maryja nosi Jezusa w Swoim łonie i wydaje Zbawiciela na świat. Zaprośmy Maryję do naszych domów i serc w szczególny sposób. Podczas tegorocznego Adwentu, poświęćmy Maryi nieco więcej czasu. Módlmy się w domu przy Jej świętych obrazach. d) Rachunek sumienia. Zgodnie ze słowami świętego Jana Chrzciciela, okres adwentowy powinien być czasem osobistej refleksji, abyśmy poznali, jak wyprostować nasze ścieżki na przyjście Pana. Jednym ze sposobów, jaki możemy to zrobić, jest przystąpienie do spowiedzi. e) Pomoc bliźnim. Wokół nas są ludzie będący w o wiele gorszej sytuacji niż my: biedni, potrzebujący, będący w żałobie po zmarłych bliskich, ludzie samotni, głodni, spragnieni, i tak dalej. Adwent oferuje nam wiele możliwości wsparcia najbardziej potrzebujących, modlitwy za nich oraz uczynków miłosierdzia względem duszy i ciała. f) Tradycja. Tradycje dają nam poczucie tożsamości i jednoczą rodzinę. Zapalajcie świece adwentowe przed kolacją. Dziękując Bogu za wspólny posiłek, odmówcie dodatkową modlitwę, np. „Anioł Pański”. Wybierzcie sobie świętego, o którym będziecie razem czytać co wieczór. We wtorek, 19 grudnia o 7:00 wieczorem, będzie można przystąpić do Spowiedzi Świętej po angielsku i hiszpańsku. Módlmy się za wszystkie ciężarne matki i ich nienarodzone dzieci. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

ILLINOIS TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP -The State of Illinois is moving along in the process of preparing for the Tax Credit Scholarships. You may have heard on the radio recently where individuals are able to contribute to the fund and receive a 75% Tax Credit on their Illinois income tax. For more information the Archdiocese has information on their website at www.archchicago.org. Families that desire a Catholic Education for their children but have not found it affordable now have an opportunity to send their children to a Catholic School. Tomorrow, Monday, December 18th we will be hosting a session from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. where families will have the opportunity to take a tour of our school and learn more about how the tax credit will work. MERRY CHRISTMAS -To help everyone get in the mood for the season we would like to invite everyone to our Christmas Program on Wednesday, December 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Church. St. Joseph Baptism Classes are carried out: In English on the First Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Activity Center (Club House). Parents must come to the rectory, 7240 W. 57th St., to register for the class. If the baptism is celebrated in St. Joseph, the cost of the class is including in the fee; if the child is not baptized in St. Joseph, there is a $25 fee. The parents must register and pay the fee, to be able to attend the classes. If the parents prefer to attend the class in Spanish, it is recommended for them to attend classes at Our Lady of Snows, 4810 S. Leamington Ave., Chicago. (773) 582-2266. Parents must call and arrange to have the class there.

Baptism Schedule for 2018 All Baptisms in English are held on

the second and fourth Sundays of the month. There is a limit of six (6) children

Las clases de preparación para bautismos en San José se llevan a cabo: En inglés en el primer (1er) martes del mes a las 19:00 en el centro de actividades (Casa Club). Los padres deben pasar a la rectoría antes, para hacer los arreglos necesarios. Si el bautizo se celebra en St. Joseph, el costo de la clase está incluido en la tarifa; si no se bautiza en St. Joseph, hay una cuota de $25. Los padres deben inscribirse y pagar la cuota, para poder asistir a las clases. Si los padres prefieren asistir a la clase en español, se les recomienda tormarla en Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, 4810 S. Leamington Ave., Chicago. (773) 582-2266. Los padres deben llamar para informarse el día y la hora en que se llevan a cabo. Tienen personal que les puede atender en español ahí mismo.
