Today, we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter. On this day, we hear a very beautiful and short passage from the Gospel of John. In today’s Gospel reading, the Scriptures present to us Jesus as the Good Shepherd. We hear Jesus say, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” Even though we are not as familiar to shepherding flocks of animals, like the people of Jesus’ time, this tender image of a shepherd caring and guiding his flock still resonates with us in our hearts. Jesus is our shepherd, and we belong to Jesus. Jesus is the fulfillment of Psalm 100. In Psalm 100:3, we read, “know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him, we are his people, the sheep of his flock. The Gospel reading that we hear at Mass today omits some preceding sections. Even though they are included in the Lectionary, does not mean these passages are not relevant. In fact, I believe

that the preceding material is very important, and helps us understand the words of Jesus even more. St. John the Evangelist situates the words of Jesus that we hear in today’s gospel in a very specific moment and context. If we go a little earlier to John 10:22, we read, “and it was at Jerusalem at the feast of the Dedication.’’ The feast of the Dedication means very little to us, particularly because we are not Jewish. However, this detail that St. John includes had a lot of meaning for the early Christians. Remember, the official language during the time of Jesus was Greek. Everyone spoke in Greek. The Scriptures were first written in Greek, because that was the language that everyone used from Spain to Persia. St. John wrote his gospel in Greek. In Greek says, John 10:22 says “and it was at Jerusalem the Encaenia.” The word encaenia would be very familiar and easily understood to people of ancient times, including early Christians. Encaenia means not only dedication, but also renewal. To help us understand better, we listen to St. Augustine as he teaches, “Encaenia was the festival of the dedication of the temple. For in Greek kainos means new; and whenever there was some new dedication it was called Encaenia. And now this word is come into common use; if one puts on a new coat, he is said ‘encaeniare,’ to renovate, or to hold an encaenia [new].” Why is the Greek word encaenia important for this passage? As we learned earlier, encaenia means new. Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish” within the context of time of renewal, newness (dedication). Likewise, we hear these words of Jesus in the Gospel today during a time of renewal and newness. We are in the Easter season. The Easter season is a time of new life and new grace. Jesus is risen from the dead, and He desires to share His new life with us! Moreover, in this Easter season, Jesus desires to lead us to a new relationship with God, He wishes to lead us to a new way of life in God’s grace, and He wants to lead us to new life with God for eternity in heaven.

Please pray for vocations to the priesthood, especially here in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Currently, have about 570 active priests in the Archdiocese, and in 14 years, it is estimated that we will have only 300 priests or fewer. Pray for priests and for future vocations to the priesthood, so that we may have priests to shepherd Christ’s people in the future. May our Blessed Mother help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph, our good patron, pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

GO ST. JOSEPH KNIGHTS!

We completed our Aspire Testing on Thursday. The Aspire is aligned to the Common Core and very similar to the PARCC given in the public schools. I am very interested in seeing the results. Standardized tests have value to our school in helping determine any changes that need to be made or updated. When looking at results we focus on patterns – how well our children in general performed on particular skills.

Van Gogh – I invite everyone to see the art work of our fourth and fifth graders. They have been studying Van Gogh’s techniques and their art work is displayed on the second floor outside their classrooms. It is very good!

I also need to mention our Young Rembrandts; they meet each Wednesday after school and have their work displayed outside the pre-four classroom. Our Young Rembrandt group is made up of children in kindergarten – fifth grade.

Tamale Sale – Our Parent Club is sponsoring a Tamale Sale on Sunday April 24th from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Centennial Hall. Pre-order forms can be obtained from the school or rectory office. Pre-orders are due on Wednesday, April 20th.

Potbelly Night – I wish to thank all of our parishioners who participated in our Potbelly Night this past Tuesday. We don’t yet have the results but it was again a very successful event.

Registration 2016 – 2017 – Our open registration has begun. If you are interested in a Catholic Education for your children, please contact me at the school office, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss our school program. Through the Archdiocese, there are a number of assistance programs for families, to make tuition more affordable. Have a great week God Bless. Lawrence Manetti, Principal

Informes Padre Bob

Jezusa. Święty Jan Ewangelista umieszcza te słowa w konkretnym czasie i kontekście. Święty Augustyn wyjaśnia to następująco: „Encaenia to uroczystość poświęcenia świątyni. To wszak wciąż Wielkanoc, czas odnowy: nowego życia i nowej łaski.
