Father Henry’s Reflection
The 3rd Sunday of the Advent Season
The pink candle is also known as the Shepherd Can-
dle to highlight the joy the shepherds experienced when
they received the good news about Christ’s birth (Luke 2:8-
20). During the middle of the night, the darkest time, the
shepherds encountered angels.
This is an extreme happiness that cannot be de-
terred by present circumstances. This type of joy comes
from God alone. Joy can often be experienced when a Chris-
tian thinks about salvation, eternal life, or Jesus..
It is an eager anticipation about wonderful things to
come. The shepherds experienced this as they ran to Beth-
lehem to see Jesus.
John the Baptist is a model evangelizer. He
knows he is but a finger pointing at the sun. He
himself is not the sun, although whatever light is
in him comes from the sun. So it is with us. We
are filled with light—our church, our community,
ourselves. God wants us to let that light be seen
by others so that they too might come to live in
the light. But we ourselves—neither as individu-
als, nor as a church—are the light. We are but
witnesses to the light who is Christ ever coming
everywhere and in everyone who comes into the
world. He is the one and the only one to whom we
should point. And all our lives and ministry, like
John’s are a preparation for the shining of that
light ever more fully.
The second reading tells us how we are to witness:
through our rejoicing. Rejoice always! The word
resounds through the first two readings as well as
the psalm. Catholics used to call this “Gaudete”
or “Rejoice!” Sunday. We are not to be heralds of
gloom and doom. We rejoice because we await
God’s coming in glory. Our message as well as
our lives should be one of rejoicing. After all it is
good news we are called to share.
Juan el Bautista es un evangelizador modelo. Sa-
No
Do-
mingo. No debemos ser heraldos de pesimismo y
fatalidad. Nos regocijamos porque esperamos la
venida de Dios en gloria. Tanto nuestro mensaje
llamados a compartir.
