Learning the Way…Living the Way…Sharing the Way… The Church of Saint Luke ~ Parish Faith Formation Summary

EMMAUS DiscipleFest is the centerpiece of our faith formation designed for ALL parishioners, individuals and families. We gather eight times a year as a whole community, share a meal togeth-er, sing and pray, participate in a fun large group learning experience, break out into age appropri-ate learning groups, and then re-gather to share about our experiences and pray before we return to our homes. EMMAUS has the feel of a community of disciples and respects the fact that the fam-ily is the primary locus for learning the faith.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Our CGS program is an approach to the faith formation for disciples ages 3-12, which is rooted in Liturgy (the Mass), scripture, and prayer.

Level I - Preschool-K disciples ages 3-6: A disciple age 5 must be entering kindergarten in the Fall. The curriculum theme for Level I is “The Good Shepherd.”

Level II - Grades 1-3 disciples ages 6-9: A disciple age 6 must be entering grade 1 in the Fall. The curriculum theme for Level II is “The True Vine.”

Level III—Grades 4-5 disciples ages 9-12: A disciple age 9 must be entering grade 4 in the Fall. The curriculum theme for Level III is “The Plan of God.”

Life’s Question, Scripture’s Answers for Middle School aged youth in grades 6-8 orients them toward a deeper understating of the Word of God and helps them identify and talk about the Lord’s presence in their everyday lives. We brainstorm with the young teens the struggles, ques-tions, and teachings that may help them process their emotion in the context of life’s encounters. Small group activities guide the young disciples on this leg of their faith journey.

High School Youth Group for teens in 9-12 Grades provides an open, positive environment for discussions about The Faith. We meet monthly and discuss topics relevant to high schooler’s lives and explore our faith through small groups and activities. This program is an informal portion of our comprehensive youth ministry programs and meets monthly.

We also offer the following supplemental faith formation programs to help our young disciples encounter Our Lord through Mass, scripture, and prayer.

Learning the Way…Living the Way…Sharing the Way… Sacramental Preparation

First Eucharist & First Reconciliation Preparation is designed for six and seven year-old disciples who have already been baptized and are preparing to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation for the first time. We recognize parents as the primary teachers and models of faith for their children. Regular participation in our Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy, the Mass, is essential.

This two year process includes the disciple’s regular participation in the Sunday Liturgy, monthly EMMAUS Disci-pleFests and weekly CGS sessions. In the 2nd year of preparation, an online learning program is offered to help parents prepare their children to receive the sacraments. In addition, there are two informal one-on-one con-versations which allow us to check-in with the parents/guardians and talk about the disciple’s readiness. One of these conversations takes place at the beginning of the preparation process and the other conversation prior to scheduling the actual First Eucharist date.

Confirmation Preparation is designed for teen disciples who are minimum age 13 and in high school grades 9-12. The goal is to help our families raise mature disciples (learners, practitioners and proponents of The Way)by helping them; name and claim the experience of the Lord in their lives, put words to and share their faith, develop an intimate relationship with the Lord, come to know themselves, and commit to living out the life ofdiscipleship as a member of the Body of Christ. This continues with their regular participation in our Sunday Eu-charistic Liturgy: the Mass. This two year process includes the disciple’s regular participation in the Sunday Liturgy, monthly EMMAUSDiscipleFests, twice per month preparation sessions, the annual parish youth retreat, and two Youth Days. Inaddition, Confirmation candidates will be assigned a Mentor to assist them in their growth as Catholic disciplesand to help evaluate their readiness for the sacrament. These Mentors will meet with their assigned teens regu-larly to have conversations about the candidate’s faith journey. It’s important to note that the role of the Men-tor does not, however, replace the role of the candidate’s Sponsor or Parents.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) adapted for Unbaptized Children and Teens is de-signed for young disciples over the age of 7 who desire to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. This pro-cess may take up to two years. During this time, we guide them through the stages of conversion that leads to the full sacramental initiation through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Please jeep in mind this RCIA adapted for Children and Teens Process is IN ADDITION TO their regular Sunday Mass participa-tion, monthly EMMAUS Disciple-Fests, and Supplemental Faith Formation Programs described earlier.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) adapted for Baptized Children and Teens is designed for disciples over the age of 7 who: 1) have already been baptized, but did not receive the sacraments of First Eucharist and Reconciliation at the grade level when these sacraments are usually celebrated, OR 2) have been baptized in another Christian faith and desire to come into full communion with the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. While this process may take up to two years, it is one that is based primarily on the disciple’s readiness and not so much on chronological age or grade level. Pleas keep in mind this RCIA adapted for Children and Teens Process is IN ADDITION TO their regular Sunday Mass participation, monthly EMMAUS DiscipleFests, and Supplemental Faith Formation Programs described earlier.
