The Celebration of Sacraments
Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gather-ings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday or by appointment.
Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.
Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.
Dear People of God, I began a series 2 weeks ago based on the simple question: Father, do you actually expect people to do any of that Lenten stuff? Today I want to focus in on almsgiving and why we might want to practice getting better at it. I say that because we aren’t supposed to limit our almsgiving to Lent. It’s supposed to be a life-long Ministry which enables each of us to directly touch and influence the lives of others. So let me first explain what alms are because I think over the years we may have gotten the wrong idea. Those of us who went to catholic schools or attended Saturday morning CCD classes may recall getting a little folder with forty slots in it for dimes, nickels or, for the wealthy in our midst, quarters. At the end of Lent the teacher collected all the folders and we were informed that the funds would go toward some important missionary work of the church. More recently we’re handed a pre-cut bit of cardboard which, if properly refolded, becomes a “rice bowl” with a nice slot for inserting coins or, for the wealthy in our midst, a folded bill. Unfortunately, the lesson learned from these devices is that Jesus’ missionary work can survive and prosper on spare change collected during a short period of time (after all, forty days of Lent can hardly compare to the other 325 days we aren’t inserting change into slots). If we go the Bible to find out what alms are and why we’re expected to offer them we might get a very different idea. The spiritual reason behind almsgiving is to form a community of like believers, to share with those who have less so they can feel equality and thus become participating members, to lift up the lowly and provide them the means to achieve the level of success we ourselves have achieved. In other words, alms is a daily behavior not one lim-ited to Lent, which leads us to find those in need, assist them now so they can, with us, contemplate the salvation of souls - their own, ours and those of others. Here’s a definition of almsgiving from the prophet Isaiah: is it not to divide your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into the house; when you see the naked to cov-er him, and not to hide yourself from your own people? You may want to read Job, Chapter 31, beginning at verse 16 for a Lenten reflexion on almsgiving. The salvation of souls according to Isiah demands that we grow beyond a personal relationship with God and Jesus to one which is built in a strong community made strong by our personal sacrifices toward others in need. Job questions our fidelity to God if we do not increasingly come to the aid of others. That means almsgiving is based on our willingness to take a look around us, determine the needs, and give accordingly. Sometimes that may really mean spare change but at other times it may well de-mand a huge financial sacrifice on our part. I’ll share with you that money is one of the Big Three realities we humans don’t like to share, (you can find out why by reading my work The Human as Thinker in the HSP library, looking at the last section on the three participating realties of the one human person.) That’s why the church asks us to ‘practice’ almsgiving during Lent so it becomes an ordinary way of life the rest of the year and enables us to do financially what we can for the salvation of souls.

Fast and abstinence during Lent: FASTING: On Good Friday, those who are 18 but not yet 60 are allowed only one full meal. Two smaller meals are allowed as needed, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT: Those who are 14 years of age or older are to abstain from meat on all the Fridays of Lent. The church no longer attempts to prescribe Lenten practices in detail. The above regulations simply highlight Good Friday, and the other Fridays of Lent.

Let’s welcome our catechumens as they move forward in their journey to full communion with our Catholic Church. Billy Helton and Bryan Wolfram will be participating in some of the oldest rituals of the church, the scrutiny's, in the coming weeks. At the time of these ceremonies, we as a parish family, are asked to pray for them!
THANK YOU: This bulletin is furnished to the Parish without charge. The advertisements that appear completely defray all publishing costs with which the church would otherwise be bur-dened. Please patronize these sponsors as a thank you for their kind generosity.
Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the Reverse Raffle a success! It was truly a night of fun and re-connections…..and interesting costuming by our emcee, Doug Grey! Thanks Barb Marquis, Louann Harrison, Cathy Carroll, and Janet Hickey for your ongoing care of this project!
Lenten Bible Study Please take the opportunity to come to the next Lenten presentation, on Tuesday March 21st at 6PM. We are often looking for an extra “something” to do during Lent instead of “giving up” things! This is an opportunity for those who can’t make the Friday afternoon stations, to be present for an early evening event!

March On, Thou Wild and Windy Month!
The month I was born Was made for roller skating and
kite-flying. It is the month of Mardi Gras and Lent and
St. Patrick’s Feast Day. It is when winter ends and spring begins. It’s a blustery, snowy, rainy, sunny month.
It is full of penitence and hope. And when it’s over, we sigh in relief and celebrate the joyous season of Easter.
